La défense et l'organisation militaire des Gaules de 284 au repli sur Arles des services administratifs romains au début du Ve siècle

L’armée de Gaule sous le Bas-Empire fut une des trois armées principales de l’Empire romain. Son évolution de la fin du IIIe siècle jusqu’au début du Ve fut marquée par une réorganisation graduelle dans le commandement, ainsi que dans l’organisation des troupes et des fortifications. Ces réformes ont fait l’objet d’études qui ont dressé un schéma de déploiement des troupes resté longtemps populaire. À ce schéma s’est ensuite ajoutée l’idée de la stratégie à grande échelle qui y aurait été associée. Ce mémoire tâche de dresser une synthèse des derniers travaux sur l’armée romaine tardive en Gaule. L’approche choisie repose sur une réévaluation des sources sans l’influence d’un schéma défensif préconçu, ainsi que sur une critique de certaines idées reçues concernant l’armée romaine du IVe siècle. / The army stationed in Gaul during the Later Empire was one of the three main armies available to the Roman Empire. Its evolution from the late IIIrd century to the early Vth century was marked by reforms applied gradually to the high command, and to the organization of troops and fortifications. These measures have interested scholars who established a model of troop deployment which enjoyed great popularity over a long period of time. The idea of strategy applied on a great scale was later included in this concept. This thesis proposes a synthesis of the latest research on the late Roman army in Gaul. The selected approach of analysis is based on a reevaluation of the sources without the bias of a preconceived defensive model. Some obsolete ideas regarding the late Roman army will also be subject to criticism.

Making becomes an act; manipulating materials such as synthetic hair and paint are associated with the guise of the makeup artist. Frantic rehearsal logic prevails as a dress is repurposed into a male giant's costume and window blinds are used to construct a boat's deck. This collusion asks the viewer to transgress the boundary of the stage, becoming a voyeur privileged to the world of exiled props and role reversal.

Ce travail porte sur les fragments du Discours véritable de Celse, du Contre les chrétiens de Porphyre, du Discours ami de la vérité adressé aux chrétiens d’Hiéroclès et du Contre les Galiléens de Julien. Son but est d’étudier la façon dont ces traités antichrétiens se rattachent à la tradition littéraire de l’Antiquité. Dans une première partie, nous discutons des problèmes liés à l’étude de ces œuvres. Dans une deuxième partie, nous étudions l’emploi polémique des références littéraires chez les polémistes. Une troisième partie est consacrée aux attaques ad hominem contre les personnages bibliques et contre les chrétiens. Enfin, une quatrième partie étudie la forme littéraire de ces œuvres : le choix du titre et du public, mais aussi la structure et le genre littéraire. / This work deals with the fragments of Celsus’ True Discourse, Porphyry’s Against the Christians, Hierocles’ Truthful Discourse to the Christians and Julian’s Against the Galileans. Its purpose is to study the way these anti-Christian treatises use the literary tradition of Antiquity. In the first part, we discuss some problems related to the study of these works. In a second part, we study the polemical use of literary references in these texts. A third part is devoted to ad hominem attacks against biblical characters and against Christians. Finally, a fourth part studies the literary form of these works : the choice of the title and the audience, but also their structure and their literary genre.

A OMJ foi identificada a partir de 30 anos de dados de reanálise de radiação de onda longa (ROL) e componente zonal do vento (u). As grandezas turbulentas foram estudadas a partir da variância, covariância e coeficiente de correlação de um conjunto de dados de resposta rápida coletado na torre micrometeorológica de Caxiuanã (PA), e tratados com a Transformada em Ondeletas (TO) para se obter a contribuição de cada escala para estes momentos estatísticos. A análise dos 30 anos de dados de ROL e u mostrou que a ocorrência da OMJ está ligada com o fenômeno do El Niño/Oscilação Sul (ENOS), bem como influência do ENOS no tempo da região amazônica pode estar associado a presença ou não da OMJ. Foi observado que anos de El Niño tendem a desfavorecer a ocorrência da OMJ e anos de La Niña tendem a favorecer o desenvolvimento da oscilação. Caso uma OMJ se desenvolva durante um episodio de El Niño, a oscilação pode influenciar a temperatura, a velocidade do vento e a precipitação de forma diferente ao do El Niño. A análise por fase da OMJ mostrou que, em Belém, há diferença significativa na temperatura máxima e na precipitação entre cada fase, porém, a temperatura mínima e o módulo do vento apresentaram pouca diferença. Os fluxos cinemáticos turbulentos analisados, por escala, em três horários distintos, foram mais diferentes durante o período diurno, principalmente w’T’ e w’q’. A diferença entre fase ativa e fase inativa foi reduzindo com passar do dia, durante o período de transição dia – noite, poucas escalas tiveram diferença significativa, e durante a noite, nenhuma escala teve nível de confiança acima ou igual a 95%. Estes resultados indicam que a convecção diurna é o mecanismo responsável por esta diferença e como a OMJ atua como uma grande célula convectiva, a convecção local é amplificada, explicando a grande diferença observada entre as fases durante o período diurno. / The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the Madden - Julian Oscillation (MJO) on turbulent elements of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL). The MJO was identify on a time series of 30 years of outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) and zonal component of the wind (u). The turbulent parameters were studied through the covariance and the correlation coefficient of a fast response data set collected on Caxiuanã’s (Pa) micrometeorological tower. The difference between each phase of the MJO was statistically analyzed with the t test of Student. The OLR and u data set results shows that the MJO occurrence is linked to El Niño / Southern Oscillation (ENSO) happening. The El Niño phase of an ENSO tends to diminish the chances of MJO case to develops, the opposite situation is identify during an La Niña episode, when the MJO is favored by the dynamics of the ongoing ENSO mechanism. If a MJO occurs during an El Niño, it can change the temperature, wind velocity and the precipitation expected for an El Niño year. The MJO’s phase analysis, for Belém, reveled a significant difference on precipitation and maximum temperature between the active and inactive phase, but for minimum temperature and wind module, this difference is little significant. The turbulent kinematic fluxes, analyzed by scale on each phase of the MJO, during three different periods of the day, were more distinct during the daytime period, with high confidence levels, mostly on w’T’ and w’q’ fluxes. The day – night transition and the night period were less different, with only a few scales showing more than or exactly 95% of confidence during the transition, and with none scales reaching the 95% mark during the night. Those results indicate that the diurnal convection is the responsible mechanism for this differences, and as the MJO is like a big convective cell, the local convection during its active phase is amplified, explaining the differences found during the daytime period.

Understanding the scale interaction of atmospheric transient disturbances and its coupling with the hydrological cycle over the Pacific-North American regions

Large-scale atmospheric disturbances play important roles in determining the general circulation of the atmosphere during the North Pacific boreal winter. A number of scientific questions have been raised due to these disturbances’ spatial and temporal complexity as well as the hydrological implication associated with them. In this dissertation, the principal goal is to further improve our understanding of the atmospheric high frequency (HF) and intermediate frequency (IF) disturbances active over the North Pacific. The study focuses on their energetics, intraseasonal and interannual variability, and the resulting hydrological impact over the eastern North Pacific and Western U.S. including extreme events. To delineate the characteristics of HF and IF disturbances in the troposphere, we first derive a new set of equations governing the local eddy kinetic energy (EKE), and assess the critical processes maintaining local budgets of the HF and IF EKE. The diagnosis assesses the 3-D patterns of energy flux convergence (EFC), barotropic conversion (BT), baroclinic conversion (BC), and cross-frequency eddy-eddy interaction (CFEI). The local EKE budget analysis is followed by an investigation of the modulation of HF and IF eddy activity by different modes of low frequency climate variability. On interannual timescales, the response of various local energetic processes to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) determines the HF and IF EKE anomalies and the role of CFEI process is important in producing these anomalies. Also on interannual timescales, winter precipitation deficits associated with suppressed cyclonic activity, i.e., negative HF EKE anomalies, are linked to severe droughts over the U.S. Southern Great Plain (SGP) region. The suppressed cyclonic activity is, in turn, tied to phase changes in the West Pacific (WP) teleconnection pattern. On intraseasonal timescales, variations in HF disturbances (a.k.a. storm tracks) over the North Pacific are closely coupled with tropical convection anomalies induced by the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and partly drive larger scale intraseasonal flow anomalies in this region through eddy-eddy interactions. Anomalous HF eddy activity induces subseasonal transitions between “wet” and “dry” regimes over the west coast of North America. Also on intraseasonal timescales, the East Asian cold surge (EACS) is found to provide a remote forcing of the winter precipitation anomalies in the western U.S. This modulation is achieved through “atmospheric rivers” (ARs), which are narrow channels of concentrated moisture transport in the atmosphere and are responsible for over 70% of the extreme precipitation events in the western U.S.. EACS effectively modulates the IF disturbance activity over the North Pacific, and the anomalous IF disturbances lead to the formation of an AR over the eastern North Pacific that ultimately induces precipitation anomalies in the western U.S. Analyses of the simulations from the NCAR Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4) demonstrate that the connections among the EACS, AR and western U.S. precipitation are better captured by a model with higher spatial resolutions. The improved simulation of these connections is achieved mainly through a better representation of the IF disturbances, and the associated scale-interaction processes in the higher resolution model.

A escritora inglesa Jane Austen possui, além do status de autora canônica, um apelo popular não apenas em função de sua qualidade como escritora, mas também pela força imagética de suas obras quando adaptadas para o cinema. Em Amor e Inocência (2007), o diretor Julian Jarrold apresenta um episódio ocorrido na vida da autora, com base em fatos extraídos da biografia Becoming Jane Austen, escrita em 2003 por Jon Spence. O filme explora um possível envolvimento entre a jovem Jane e o estudante irlandês Tom Lefroy. Essa produção, enquanto apresenta o início da carreira da escritora, sugere que o trauma da relação mal sucedida com Lefroy possa ter sido a fonte temática que inspirou sua obra ficcional posterior. Esta dissertação verifica de que forma o filme articula as questões históricas sobre a vida de Austen com as situações ficcionais apresentadas em seus romances para chegar a um produto final tão coeso e verossímil, embora ficcional. Especial atenção é dada ao estudo da construção da personagem protagonista, que resulta da combinação entre o conteúdo imagético das obras de Austen e os elementos biográficos pesquisados por Spence. Além dessas fusões, há ainda que ser considerado o ícone Jane Austen, que habita o imaginário dos ingleses e dos leitores pelo mundo afora. Na evolução das adaptações fílmicas das obras de Austen testemunhamos a fusão entre as personagens e a própria autora, especialmente no caso de Elizabeth Bennet, em Orgulho e Preconceito (1813). In Becoming Jane (2007), director Julian Jarrold presents the story of Jane Austen from an episode occurred early in the author’s life. Based on facts extracted from Jon Spence’s biography Becoming Jane Austen (2003), the film explores a supposed relationship between young Jane and an Irish Law student, Tom Lefroy. In Becoming Jane we witness the beginning of Austen’s writing career, and the film speculates that the trauma of a failed relationship with Lefroy was the inspiration for Austen’s mature novels. This work verifies the ways in which the film articulates the historical aspects of Jane Austen’s life with fictional events as presented in her novels to reach a cohesive and credible – although fictional – result. Special attention is paid to the process of constructing a fictional Jane as main character, combining the images contained in her novels with the biographical elements presented by Spence; it is also considered in this analysis the evolving nature of Jane Austen as an icon that inhabits not only the English imaginary but also that of readers all over the world. In the evolution of Austen filmic adaptations, we witness a fusion between her characters and the author herself, especially Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice (1813), which adds to the intertextual layers of any film analysis. To deal with the questions of film adaptations, I refer to the concepts of adaptation and appropriation as posed by theoretician Linda Hutcheon. For the specific analysis of the phenomenon of author as character, I turn again to Linda Hutcheon and the concept of historiographic metafiction presented in A Poetics of Postmodernism: History, Theory, Fiction (1988). I hope, by the end of this thesis, that this investigative and argumentative analysis is helpful in three instances: contributing to the discussion of the use of authors as characters in contemporary fiction, be it filmic or literary; identifying the cultural needs of readers and critics that perpetuate the cult of Jane Austen, known as Austenmania; and verifying to what extent historiographic metafiction alone is enough to deal with narratives in which the historical character portrayed is also a writer.

Ao término do trabalho, espero que esta discussão investigativa e argumentativa seja útil em três aspectos: contribuindo para o debate sobre autores usados como personagens na ficção derivativa contemporânea; identificando certas necessidades culturais que subjazem ao culto do ícone Jane Austen, conhecido como Austenmania; e verificando até que ponto o conceito de metaficção historiográfica dá conta de propostas narrativas em que a personagem histórica retratada é também uma escritora. / Jane Austen enjoys more than the status of canonical author: she is also popular not only because of her achievements as a writer but also for the cinematic appeal of her novels. In Becoming Jane (2007), director Julian Jarrold presents the story of Jane Austen from an episode occurred early in the author’s life. Based on facts extracted from Jon Spence’s biography Becoming Jane Austen (2003), the film explores a supposed relationship between young Jane and an Irish Law student, Tom Lefroy. In Becoming Jane we witness the beginning of Austen’s writing career, and the film speculates that the trauma of a failed relationship with Lefroy was the inspiration for Austen’s mature novels. This work verifies the ways in which the film articulates the historical aspects of Jane Austen’s life with fictional events as presented in her novels to reach a cohesive and credible – although fictional – result. Special attention is paid to the process of constructing a fictional Jane as main character, combining the images contained in her novels with the biographical elements presented by Spence; it is also considered in this analysis the evolving nature of Jane Austen as an icon that inhabits not only the English imaginary but also that of readers all over the world. In the evolution of Austen filmic adaptations, we witness a fusion between her characters and the author herself, especially Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice (1813), which adds to the intertextual layers of any film analysis. To deal with the questions of film adaptations, I refer to the concepts of adaptation and appropriation as posed by theoretician Linda Hutcheon. For the specific analysis of the phenomenon of author as character, I turn again to Linda Hutcheon and the concept of historiographic metafiction presented in A Poetics of Postmodernism: History, Theory, Fiction (1988). I hope, by the end of this thesis, that this investigative and argumentative analysis is helpful in three instances: contributing to the discussion of the use of authors as characters in contemporary fiction, be it filmic or literary; identifying the cultural needs of readers and critics that perpetuate the cult of Jane Austen, known as Austenmania; and verifying to what extent historiographic metafiction alone is enough to deal with narratives in which the historical character portrayed is also a writer.
