DECISION SUPPORT FOR RAPID ASSESSMENT OF TRUTH AND DECEPTION USING AUTOMATED ASSESSMENT TECHNOLOGIES AND KIOSK-BASED EMBODIED CONVERSATIONAL AGENTS

A pressing need exists for effective decision support systems to facilitate the rapid and accurate screening of large volumes of people. Millions of travelers transit through international borders and secure areas on an annual basis. Humans are exceptionally poor at detecting lying and deception and perform, on average, no better than chance. This research study focuses on the development, design and implementation of a Kiosk for Rapid Assessment of Deception (K-RAD) that integrates questioning with response processing and deception detection. An exploratory pilot study (N=68) and a primary study (N=225) were executed.The K-RAD was designed to have a three-dimensional figure, an "Embodied Conversational Agent" (ECA), deliver the questions through speech. This delivery mechanism was chosen because human subjects have been shown in the past to react emotionally to ECAs during conversational interactions, and emotional arousal is one of the cues to deception. Responses were analyzed for deception cues, focusing on kinesic, linguistic, and vocalic characteristics that can be captured for automated processing and which would be unique to this setting.The results show unique subject behaviors. Subjects exhibited minimal movement and had very little tendency to change posture. Some subjects (6%) referred to the ECA as an authority figure, using "sir" when responding. Subjects positioned themselves at varying distances from the ECA, with significant gender differences. Post-experiment surveys indicated a gender difference in overall stress, with female subjects reporting significantly higher levels, independent of the experimental condition.Postural-based logistic regression created significant classification models for the pilot (59.1% classification accuracy) and primary (57.2% & 62.8% classification accuracies) studies. Movement analysis had varying and conflicting results. A robust deception index with a 68.1% classification accuracy was achievable in the pilot study based on high-frequency movement and arm placement. Primary study deception indices were not significant.The results include a comprehensive set of observations and lessons learned regarding kiosk design, deception technologies, detection effectiveness, and future considerations to take into account when creating a next-generation K-RAD system. Many challenges remain, but the concept is functional, promising, and could revolutionize security screening and deception detection in a variety of settings.

Re:fresh* : refreshment and retail strategy for Gautrain stations

The focus of this study is the provision of refreshment, retail and supporting facilities at Gautrain stations. This forms part of an overarching strategy called for the deployment of refreshment, retail and supporting facilities at stations. For the purposes of this thesis, the concept of refreshment focuses on the aspects of bodily / physiological and mental refreshment, whether this be through sale of beverages and snacks or distribution and availability of information, news and mental stimulation through design. The strategy is explored in more detail through the design of a multifunctional kiosk for medium term deployment at any of the Gautrain stations. The Hatfield Gautrain station building interior forms the backdrop of an the in depth design and technical development of the intervention. Important factors in this scheme is the identifying of the most popular refreshment and ancillary facilities at other similar train stations as well as the integration of such facilities into the existing Gautrain system identity. The design approach is formulated on the three levels of scale and revolves around the creation of places and the railway station as public meeting place; tectonic expression and various factors relating to cost and sustainability. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of user needs in terms of refreshment, retail and ancillary behaviours (e.g. access to info) at transport interchanges. The final concept focuses mostly on easy transport of the kiosk, providing of all necessary services for visitors, and the use of audiovisual technologies for providing the required information.

Shopping for apparel: how can kiosk systems help?

When shopping for apparel, many consumers seek advice from friends and family or store personnel. In-store kiosk systems might serve as an alternative decision support system. In the present study we address the key question of how such kiosk systems are evaluated by consumers. We conducted three focus group discussions with regular apparel shoppers aged between 23 and 39 years. In sum, qualitative information from 15 participants was subject to a qualitative content analysis with the aim of gaining a more comprehensive understanding of how apparel shoppers experience the shopping process. Getting a more in-depth understanding of the needs and wishes associated with the apparel shopping process gives a basis for evaluating the potential acceptance of electronic decision support systems in apparel shopping. Although our study is exploratory in nature, we are able to draw an initial picture of how kiosk systems could be used in apparel shopping. (authors' abstract)

Townships to CBD: The project of ten informal traders in the formal economy of Cape Town, Western Cape.

Magister Artium (Development Studies) - MA(DVS) / The Quarterly Labour Force survey by Statistics South Africa (2019) portrays a very bleak future for the South African economy and labour force. The unemployment rate is 27.6% and youth unemployment stands at 55.2%. The National Development Plan (NDP) recognises the relevance of the informal sector and the value that it will contribute to the economy and to solving the challenges of unemployment in South Africa. The NDP projects that the informal sector, which includes domestic work, will create between 1,2 and 2 million new jobs by 2030. Few studies have been conducted on informal trading projects. This study explores the case of a ‗transitional‘ informal enterprise support project aimed at micro-enterprise development wherein 10 informal traders in Cape Town took occupancy of provincial government-sponsored kiosks on 9 May 2016. The Long Street kiosks (LSK) offer 10 traders per year a unique trading opportunity in the CBD free of rent and service charges for a period of one year, with access to a unique and potentially large market. The purpose of this study is to critically examine the role played in the informal enterprise development project by the Western Cape provincial government through its project manager, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT). This research attempts to investigate aspects of project design such as the selection criteria of the informal traders for the project, and selected results such as whether the project provided the traders with enough market exposure to the formal economy and whether their businesses were improved by participation in the project. The qualitative research approach was used for this study of the LSK project, which was a single case study, as both a unit of analysis and as a research method. The study involved a combination of two approaches, namely desktop research followed by interviews and focus group sessions. The study found that a number of limitations and shortcomings in the conduct of the project impacted on the mixed results and success achieved, pertaining to selection criteria, lack of financial and other resources, training, market-related problems, skill set limitations as well as environmental factors such as transport. The study nevertheless cast useful light on potential changes and recommendations that could enhance the project going forward and provides new insights on the complex relationship between the informal and formal ii economies and their relative potential for addressing the challenges of employment and economic growth.

Urban kiosk : Ett förslag till Stockholms framtida kiosker

I mitt examensarbete undersöker jag den fristående kiosken som byggnad, kioskens historia i Stockholm och hur den ser ut i Stockholms innerstad idag. Kiosken är en byggnad som besitter en stor potential både som plats i staden och som fristående byggnad med ofta väl exponerade fasader i alla väderstreck och placerade så att många människor passerar dem. I mitt arbete  undersöker jag denna viktiga plats och tittar på hur byggnaden kan ta tillvara  den potential som den besitter. Genom att kartlägga stadens kiosker, dess material, utformningar och påfrestningar så har jag skapat mig en bild av det som är en kiosk i Stockholm idag. Stockholms stad har höga tankar om stadens kiosker och anser bland annat att dom bör främja innovation, något som inte speglas i verkligheten.   Genom mitt undersökande så har jag kommit fram till att framtidens kiosk behöver en ny typ av arkitektur, en som klarar av snabba omställningar, ombyggnader, nya menyer samtidigt som den bör visa på nytänkande. Stora krav på en liten byggnad. Det har lett mig till att undersöka 3d-printerns teknik i stor skala. En teknik som möjliggör de ovannämnda kraven som jag anser att vi kan ställa på en kiosk. Genom att designa moduler som kan bytas ut och malas ner igen så kan kiosken skapa sitt eget kretslopp av arkitektur.  I mitt designförslag så har jag formgivit en kiosk med arkitektoniska element som känns bekanta och lätta att ta till sig. Genom att ta tillvara på möjligheten som kiosken ger med sitt fria uttryck så har jag laborerat med 3d-print i stor skala. Genom att designa med nya, hållbara material, applicerat på en design som man lätt kan ta till sig, så hoppas jag kunna vända blickarna mot kiosken som byggnadskategori och dess möjlighet som plattform för nya ideér.

Multimedia kiosk interface evaluation: an analysis of usage

Although the Umultimedia computer kiosk" is a relatively new phenomenon, a great deal of academic research has been conducted on the programming of the systems. Little research has been conducted on the effectiveness of kiosk interface design, however, perhaps due to the lack of a formalized methodology for evaluation. This thesis presents one methodology for the evaluation of graphic components used in the interface of a computer kiosk designed for the United States Forest Service. There are many established conventions for multimedia interface design. Many graphic techniques, such as buttons that change colors and generate an audible click when pressed and "windows" on the screen used for displaying images or text, have become commonplace with the increasing popularity of video games, information kiosks, automated teller machines and automated point of sale systems. This thesis examines the usage patterns of the kiosk by analyzing the sequence of buttons pressed, determines search pattern preferences, the success of a non-standard button is evaluated, and sources of confusion or misunderstanding are identified. This study demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of both the graphic components and the evaluation methodology, and it provides a foundation for the creation of a formalized approach for the evaluation of computer kiosk interfaces. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Designing Interactive Multimedia for the Anthropology Exhibit Gallery

Computer-based multimedia offer an alternative means of providing instruction to learners in two primary, yet disparate, ways. Multimedia can be used to convey information to learners, or alternatively, learners can make use of multimedia to impart information. One example of the use of multimedia technologies at the University of South Florida is an interactive computer kiosk installed in the Anthropology Exhibit Gallery. The development of the educational program featured on the kiosk's touchscreen computer is the subject of this paper. The purpose of the kiosk's program was twofold: 1) to introduce the field of anthropology to university students and the general public who visit the Anthropology Exhibit Gallery; and 2) to incorporate training in the creation of multimedia materials into two departmental project-based courses, Museum Methods and Visual Anthropology. Designing effective educational programs that take advantage of multimedia capabilities without losing focus on the user's needs or on the content being presented is a challenging endeavor. In this paper, I present the process of designing an interactive multimedia program, and discuss the critical issues of audience, hardware and software, programming tools and other technical and design considerations. The development of the program, furthermore, must be understood within the broader context of several areas, including anthropology and museums, the role of education in museums, and exhibitions as a form of media and communication. Finally, a summary of the project is presented, including a discussion of the problems and successes encountered and suggested areas for further development.

POS (Point of Sales) 產業屬於工業電腦垂直應用領域的一環, 產品穩定度要求高,生命週期較長,技術層次高,對小公司形成進入壁壘;加上產品少量多樣,客製化比例偏高的特性,無法依單一規格標準化大量生產,國內電腦硬體大廠亦無意涉足,這使得台灣 POS 業在各電子業中競爭密度相對較低,至今 (2010) 仍享有較高的毛利率;POS 廠商亦較無多角化經營的壓力。 目前台灣上市、櫃及興櫃的 POS 企業共有五家,依其進入 POS 系統業的先後順序分別為振樺 (8114)、 拍檔 (3097)、伍豐 (8076)、鴻毅 (3521) 及飛捷 (6206)。 其中前四家廠商至今仍以單一 POS 目標市場為產品開發的重心。僅有最後進入 POS 業的飛捷在 2004 年決定由單一 POS 市場策略調整為多角化產品策略,延伸其原有的 POS 系統開發核心技術,橫向拓展更多垂直應用領域,以尋求規避單一市場的風險及達到穩定獲利的目標。 本論文以個案分析法,以飛捷公司做為實際案例,藉由 POS 業的產業分析、波特五力分析及個案公司內在 SWOT 分析來了解其選擇多角化產品目標市場的決策過程。透過其不同產品策略期間財務比率的分析來探討 POS 系統公司選擇不同的產品市場競爭策略,在不同的景氣循環下所產生的財務效益。研究發現: 單一產品市場策略在產業景氣佳時期固然可以為企業帶來快速的成長及可觀的利潤;然而唯有多角化的產品策略才能有效分散經營的風險,使企業在產業景氣反轉時仍能享有穩定的獲利。

TECTONOMETAMORPHIC EVOLUTION OF THE KIOSK DOMAIN, CENTRAL GNEISS BELT, GRENVILLE PROVINCE, ONTARIO: CONSTRAINTS FROM GEOCHRONOLOGY AND THERMOBAROMETRY

The Kiosk domain in the Central Gneiss Belt, southwestern Grenville Province, Ontario comprises ca.1655 Ma orthogneisses and volumetrically minor ca. 1480-1460 Ma parag- neisses that were affected by granulite-facies metamorphism between ca. 1480 and ca. 1000 Ma. The objectives of this study are: (i) to determine the protolith ages from the Kiosk domain and the underlying southern Bonfield Batholith; (ii) to determine the tim- ing of major tectonic episodes; (iii) to determine the pressure-temperature conditions of peak metamorphism; and (iv) to use these data to constrain the position of the Allochthon Boundary Thrust in the southwestern Grenville Province.
