Die GENEME stellt auf ihrer diesjährigen Konferenz „innovative Technologien und Prozesse zur Organisation, Kooperation und Kommunikation in virtuellen Gemeinschaften“ in ihren thematischen Mittelpunkt. Virtuelle Gemeinschaften werden schon seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre beforscht. Gab es aber im frühen Web 1.0 kaum Applikationen und Konzepte zur Förderung der Interaktivität und der Kollaboration, werden die Internetnutzer seit etwa 2003 im Web 2.0 zu sogenannten Prosumern. Sie konsumieren nicht nur Inhalte sondern produzieren sie auch. Katalysatoren hierfür sind virtuelle Gemeinschaften, die sich zu thematischen Gemeinschaften, so genannten Communities of Practice, formieren. Die Möglichkeiten und der Aktionsradius zur Interaktion und Kollaboration in Virtuellen Gemeinschaften werden aktuell im Internet neu definiert. Design strategies to support and enhance scientific collaboration are still ambiguous. The ability of universities and research institutes to support a collaborative scientific research environment among researchers through appropriate methods needs to be further investigated. The lack of understanding about the human factors behind collaboration, the nature of scientific tasks, and the institute’s cultural environment are motivations for this study. As a part of our work on a European integrated project, Edu-Tech, this study investigated which factors of collaborative research are important to give us a clear picture for enhancing the social perspective of the project’s webpage. This research purposes a model, Time Environment, Individual and Group (TEIG), in order to provide descriptive variable necessary to understand the transformation of online social knowledge. Accordingly, we provided a new prototype for designing our online community, Edu-Tech, which is now ready to facilitate collaboration among researchers.

Skizzen spielen im Designprozess als Denkwerkzeuge und Kommunikationsmittel eine wichtige Rolle. Im professionellen Designdiskurs im Social Web sind sie jedoch kaum sichtbar. Der vorgestellte Skizzenblog könnte die visuelle Diskussionskultur unter Designern befördern, indem er die Technik des Bloggens auf das Skizzieren überträgt.

Purpose Facing the dilemma between collaboration and privacy is a continual challenge for users. In this setting, this paper discusses issues of a highly flexible role management integrated in a privacy-enhanced collaborative environment. Design/methodology/approach The general framework was provided by former findings of several research projects, i.e., collaborative platform BluES and projects of privacy and identity management PRIME and PrimeLife. The role management concept bases on a literature survey and has been proofed by integration into the privacy-enhanced environment BluES’n. Findings A three-dimensional role management concept was developed describing users’ rights, tasks, and positions. A discussion on how to fulfill privacy requirements yielded that a semi-automated decision making regarding the use of roles with different identities is reasonable to support users’ control of their privacy when interacting with others. Research limitations/implications The concept of flexible role management complies with the requirements of privacy-enhanced collaborative environments. However, a fully automated approach of rule-based information disclosure is not possible as such decisions depend on personal and situational aspects. Practical implications Using the example of a flexible role management concept, research described in this paper demonstrates that privacy and interaction concerns can be balanced and should be considered in application design processes. Social implications Concepts of privacy-enhanced collaborative environments allow respecting privacy-related attitudes and could improve the quality of service consumption. Originality/value The paper demonstrates contrasts between collaboration and privacy attitudes and presents solutions for the integration of role management to overcome this initially supposed contradiction.

Gruppenbildung gilt gemeinhin als soziales Phänomen. Doch mit der Evolution sozialer Software im Internet und dem einhergehenden reziproken Interaktionismus von Individuen in Online-Communities werden Kollaborationsstrukturen und Verhaltensmuster innerhalb virtueller Wissensräume sichtbarer denn je. Wie entsteht nun Kollaboration? Und welche Formen der Kollaboration gibt es? Welche Einflussfaktoren sind im Aufbau und Wachstum digitaler Wissensnetzwerke ausschlaggebend, um erfolgreich Information und Wissen verteilen zu können? Diese Fallstudie zeigt erste Einblicke in die Organisationsstruktur virtueller Wissensgemeinschaften anhand der Untersuchung des Wissen- und Lernportals OPAL. Dabei werden Theorien und Modelle aus den Handlungsfeldern der Kommunikationsund Bildungsforschung zu Grunde gelegt und mit dem soziologischen Paradigma der sozialen Netzwerktheorie verbunden.
