A Bayesian Finite Mixture Model for Network-Telecommunication Data

Manikas, Vasileios January 2016 (has links)
A data modeling procedure called Mixture model, is introduced beneficial to the characteristics of our data. Mixture models have been proved flexible and easy to use, a situation which can be confirmed from the majority of papers and books which have been published the last twenty years. The models are estimated using a Bayesian inference through an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm, known as Gibbs Sampling. The focus of the paper is on models for network-telecommunication lab data (not time dependent data) and on the valid predictions we can accomplish. We categorize our variables (based on their distribution) in three cases, a mixture of Normal distributions with known allocation, a mixture of Negative Binomial Distributions with known allocations and a mixture of Normal distributions with unknown allocation.

This search takes from inquiry question: in the world-wide and thecnologycal where they are, it looks for understanding how they live together and interact themselves, inside the school, the library and computer lab, as writing, knowledge and reading production place. It was based on qualifier search of cultural-hystoric approach taken place by Lev S Vygotsky and Mikhail Bakhtin. The search field composed itself two public schools in Juiz de Fora city state of Minas Gerais. The study developed itself throughout two methodologic tools: half-structured interview with two library teachers, one teacher head of computer lab, three classroom teachers and two teaching coordinators; analysis of data; observation and quiz. The data analysis is organized into two rates: (a) literacy at schools and (b) people and the continuing education; rethinking the pedagogical practice. This search points to the necessity of each school institution builds/runs after the plural possibilities of library use and the computer lab. Relationship/interactions possible between these place and the classroom must be promoted once to construct writers and reader students, nowadays, it does not limit itself only to the printed matter or to the digital one. Both of them live together and they are used in society. For this occurring, the existence of “material” sources is not enough, like books and computers; It is needed a commom reflexion about its use, to become available its access related to educational offers wich becomes its use meaningful. It is also urgent promoting the graduation for the tecnico and educational use of the technologies, available and present inside the school for all school community. Considering the found diversity among the workers, the imposed requirement by advance of TIC and the time-space conditions on school places. It can think about continuing education on distance modality. The school, the university and the government must be blame themselves by development on docent and discents of writing and reading habilities into supports different. Advancing the required and plural literacies and certifies the access of these readers to the new media. Finally, it is time to reframe the school library and the computer lab, for they transmute themselves into collective spaces of reading, writing, search, interaction, knowledge production and for they will be attended by all school community.

Remote detection NMR imaging of chemical reactions and adsorption phenomena

Selent, A. (Anne) 10 November 2017 (has links)
Abstract The subject of this thesis is the characterization of chemical reactions and adsorption by means of remote detection (RD) method of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The thesis consists of three related topics: In the first one, novel RD NMR based methods for characterizing chemical reactions were presented. In the second topic RD NMR methods were used to study the performance of new kind of microfluidic reactors. The third project concentrated on the development of a novel way to quantify the adsorption of flowing gas mixtures in porous materials. Even though all the topics cover quite different areas of research, they have few common nominators: remote detection NMR, microfluidics and method development. Microfluidic devices are of interest for many areas of science (such as molecular biology, disease diagnosis, chemistry) as they offer great promises for future technologies. Small dimensions enable, among many other things, the benefits of small sample volumes, large surface to volume ratio, efficient heat exchange and precise control of flow features and chemical reactions. The efficient evolution of microfluidic processes requires also the development of new innovative ways to characterize the performance of microfluidic devices. In this work, remote detection NMR is utilized for the purpose. RD is a method where the encoding and detection of information are separated physically. In many cases, the encoding and detection are performed with two separate RF coils while a fluid is passing through the studied system. In the first part of the thesis work, we introduced the concept of remote detection exchange (RD-EXSY) NMR spectroscopy. We demonstrated that the RD-EXSY method can provide unique chemical information. Furthermore, the time-of-flight (TOF) information, which is a natural side product of the experimental setup used, can be converted into indirect spatial information, showing the active reaction regions in a microfluidic device. Additionally, we demonstrated that by applying the principles of Hadamard spectroscopy in the encoding of the indirect spectral dimension we were able to produce with high efficiency RD-EXSY TOF images with direct spatial information. This allows even more accurate characterization of the active regions. The second topic concentrates on the development of microfluidc hydrogenation reactors. In the project atomic layer depositon (ALD) method was used for the first time to deposit both catalyst nanoparticles and support material on the surface of wall-coated microreactors. As a model reaction continuous flow propene hydrogenation into propane was studied by means of remote detection NMR. Reaction yield, mass transport phenomena and the activity of the catalyst surface were determined from the RD NMR data. Thirdly we presented a novel method for gas adsorption measurements in porous materials using RD TOF NMR. Traditional adsorption measurements are carried out at static conditions for a single gas component, as multi-component adsorption measurements are challenging and time-consuming. We investigated adsorption of continuously flowing propane and propene gases as well as their mixture in packed beds of mesoporous materials. The unique time-of-flight information obtained using the RD NMR method was utilized in the determination of flow velocity, which was then converted into amount of adsorbed gas.

Untersuchung von emotionalen Wirkungsmechanismen im Produktdesign

Roth, Mareike, Saiz, Oliver 19 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)

Developing Microfluidic Volume Sensors for Cell Sorting and Cell Growth Monitoring

Riordon, Jason A. January 2014 (has links)
Microfluidics has seen an explosion in growth in the past few years, providing researchers with new and exciting lab-on-chip platforms with which to perform a wide variety of biological and biochemical experiments. In this work, a volume quantification tool is developed, demonstrating the ability to measure the volume of individual cells at high resolution and while enabling microfluidic sample manipulations. Care is taken to maximise measurement sensitivity, range and accuracy, though novel use of buoyancy and dynamically tunable microchannels. This first demonstration of a microfluidic tunable volume sensor meant volume sensing over a much wider range, enabling the detection of ̴ 1 µm3 E.coli that would otherwise go undetected. Software was written that enables pressure-driven flow control on the scale of individual cells, which is used to great success in (a) sorting cells based on size measurement and (b) monitoring the growth of cells. While there are a number of macroscopic techniques capable of sorting cells, microscopic lab-on-chip equivalents have only recently started to emerge. In this work, a label-free, volume sensor operating at high resolution is used in conjunction with pressure-driven flow control to actively extract particle/cell subpopulations. Next, a microfluidic growth monitoring device is demonstrated, whereby a cell is flowed back and forth through a volume sensor. The integration of sieve valves allows cell media to be quickly exchanged. The combination of dynamic trapping and rapid media exchange is an important technological contribution to the field, one that opens the door to studies focusing on cell volumetric response to drugs and environmental stimuli. This technology was designed and fabricated in-house using soft lithography techniques readily available in most biotechnology labs. The main thesis body contains four scientific articles that detail this work (Chapters 2-5), all published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. These are preceded by an introductory chapter which provides an overview to the theory underlying this work, in particular the non-intuitive physics at the microscale and the Coulter principle.

Un étude économique de la préférence pour le pouvoir / An economic study of preference for power.

Cottalorda, Pierre-jean 16 June 2011 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to study preference for power from its definition to laboratory and field experiments. We construct this thesis around three questions: What are power and preference for power ? How to identify this preference and how to distinguish it from other social preferences ? What are the elements, experimental conditions and settings that have an impact on it ? We define power as a dispositional capacity. Hence, preference for power is a formalized version of the power motive and we distinguish four types: pure or instrumental preference for potential or effective power. In the second part of this thesis, we design a model of power and we test it in the laboratory. We identify the four types of preference for power which is the central result of this work. Then, we show that treatment effects are almost nonexistent whereas we find a strong gender effect. We finally measure this preference and find a strong correlation between pure preference for potential power and for effective power. The aim of the third part is to study this behavior in a decision maker population of the Eve Online synthetic world. We first show that field experiments in Eve Online are a good proxy for the lab. We then observe that decision makers don't manifest a stronger preference for power that other subjects.
