Second language learning through one's social network in the school environment - inside and outside the classroom : The case of school newcomers (ENAF). Bourgone primary school in Besançon-Planoise

Laurence, Narajan Alex 27 June 2012 (has links)
Within the school a special class has been set up for these new comers to learn French as a foreign language. It is called “CLIN” and these pupils spend more than 10 hours in this class per week. The aim of this research work is to study the French (as a foreign) language learning by these foreigner pupils, particularly, the classroom learning and the outside-of-the-class learning. That involves two learning “zones”; informal and formal. The research is based on three main theorical approaches which imply sociology, language pedagogy and social interactionism. The results obtained embed elements of the approaches mentioned above. Data analysis was done and divided into three categories. The first one is about the sociological aspect of the research. It sheds light on the construction and development of the pupils’ social networks. Two types of social network emerge from the results; the chosen social network and the imposed social network. Whatever the network, learning of the French language is done differently. The second one is about learning French in classroom through the communicative language teaching. Studies show that the pupils’ speeches contain French standard linguistic forms as well as French linguistic gap-forms. The third one is about the informal language learning through everyday communication. Results reveal that the linguistic aspect is overshadowed by the communicative and interactional urge throughout the pupils’ discussions. Non-standard linguistic forms are often considered within these exchanges. Finally, the present research work outlines the sociological aspect that needs to be strongly considered when one is learning French as a foreign language (especially the foreign pupils in France) in the school environment. This research also helps to have a better understanding of the “behind the learning scenes” of language immersion in school contexts

La préposition dans l'interlangue : étude des productions en L2 anglais d'apprenants francophones / Interlanguage prepositions : an analysis of French learners' productions in L2 English

Naser Eddine, Abeer 27 January 2012 (has links)
The main objective of our thesis paper is to examine the intelligibility of erroneous prepositional uses produced by French learners of English. We begin with an overview of the semantico-syntactic properties of English and French prepositions. Then we give an account of second language acquisition theories, and we highlight the acquisition of English prepositions by listing a number of reasons that are likely to make them problematic for L2 learners. We also propose certain effective pedagogical approaches to teaching English prepositions/particles. To measure intelligibility, we assess an oral and a written corpus containing L2 erroneous constructions. Our error tagset is divided into lexical and lexico-grammatical errors (addition, omission and substitution). The results of our corpus analysis allow us to observe the extent to which erroneous spatial prepositions may affect the intelligibility of the transferred message.

What's the 'Problem' Statement? An Investigation of Problem-based Writing in a First Year Engineering Program

Ashley J Velazquez (6634796) 14 May 2019 (has links)
Upon IRB approval, a corpus of 1,192 texts consisting of three assignments written by a total of 1,736 first year engineering students was compiled, and 117 pedagogical materials were collected. Using an iterative quantitative-qualitative approach to written discourse analysis, instances of formulaic language (4- and 6-word sequences) were identified in the corpus; formulaic language was then coded for the rhetorical functions expected in problem statements as qualitatively identified in the pedagogical materials. Additionally, three discourse-based interviews were conducted with First-year Engineering Faculty. Interview data was coded for themes of effective communication and used to triangulate the findings from the corpus analysis.

Ruské a české národní tradice vánočního období ve výuce ruštiny / Russian and Czech Christmas Folk Traditions at the Lessons of Russian Language

Klimets, Anna January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the analysis and detailed description of the basic holidays of the civil year. The theoretical part of the thesis contains the study of the most popular folk traditions, religious rituals and beliefs of the Slavs, the way how Christian church (Catholic and Orthodox) influenced on the origin of fundamental traditions and rituals. There is also a description of the way the major Slavonic holidays are held. Czech and Russian traditions are compared in order to find some basic similarities and differences between them and to analyze the development of the traditions in historical context. Such issues as language pedagogy, intercultural language competence and how to use traditions at Russian lessons at primary and secondary schools are also emphasized in the work. The practical part of the thesis deals with the analysis of some books used for teaching Russian language at Czech schools in order to find out how customs, folk traditions and holidays are described and presented. It also contains the research of the contemporary situation at Czech schools in the form of the testing of the teachers of Russian language and the students of elementary and secondary schools. The aim of the research is to find out which methods the teachers are dealing with for the successful...

Delayed Versus Immediate Corrective Feedback on Orally Produced Passive Errors in English

Quinn, Paul 21 August 2014 (has links)
Research demonstrating the beneficial effects of corrective feedback (CF) for second language (L2) learning (e,g., Li, 2010) has almost invariably resulted from studies in which CF was provided immediately. Yet teachers are often encouraged to delay CF to avoid interrupting learners (Harmer, 2001). This study investigates how differences in the timing of CF on oral production affect L2 learning and learners’ reactions to CF. Theoretically, Immediate CF may facilitate L2 development by allowing learners to immediately compare their errors to accurate models (i.e., recasting, e.g., Doughty, 2001). The effectiveness of Immediate CF has also been linked to skill acquisition theory because some CF (i.e., prompting) is hypothesized to help learners proceduralize their L2 knowledge (Ranta & Lyster, 2007). This thesis introduces additional theoretical explanations to explain the effectiveness of both Immediate and Delayed CF. For example, reactivation and reconsolidation theory (Nader & Einarsson, 2010) holds that long-term mental representations are susceptible to change when they are recalled. Thus, both Immediate and Delayed CF may help learners alter their incorrect mental representations of language features if that CF reminds learners of those incorrect representations and provides them with accurate models. In a laboratory-based study, 90 intermediate-level adult ESL learners were randomly assigned to Immediate, Delayed, and No CF conditions. Learners took three pre-tests to measure their knowledge of the English passive construction: an aural grammaticality judgment test (AGJT), an oral production test (OPT), and a written error correction test (ECT). Next, they received some brief instruction on the passive. Learners then completed three communicative tasks in which the CF conditions were provided. These tasks were followed by immediate and delayed post-tests. Learners’ reactions to CF were elicited with a questionnaire. Mixed-design one-way ANOVAs revealed statistically significant improvement for all conditions over time on all measures, but no statistically significant differences between conditions. The questionnaires revealed that learners prefer Immediate CF, but that Immediate CF may constrain CF noticeability and learners’ independence, while Delayed CF may cause anxiety or embarrassment. In summary, altering the timing of CF did not differentially affect L2 development, but it did elicit different reactions from learners.
