A case study of the lead time between eliciting and implementing the requirements in mobile game apps

Context. There has been a remarkable growth of the mobile game industry since the raging pandemic covid-19 destroyed many businesses across several industries [1]. Nowadays mobile gaming has been one of the highest performing industries globally, raking in more billions in revenue [1,2]. Understanding the direction and aspects to improve the quality of products and reduce the cost is important for a mobile gaming company to stand out. There is a plethora of literature on how to improve the related product quality [3]. One of them is to analyze and optimize the various requirements in each version update, and how these requirements could be elicited from the company’s development plan and user feedback. Specifically, mobile game companies would review the user comments of their products from various application platforms such as Google Play and Apple store, select the informative comments with specific user requirements according to their own standard, and finally elicit and then implement these requirements in the follow-up version updates. During this process, it is important to control the lead time---the time cost for mobile game companies to review and select the valuable user comments, make decisions to apply the changes, make a development plan afterwards and finally put it into action. In the current increasingly intense competitive environment, time-based dimensions of a product such as the lead-time are becoming an increasingly important component in assessing strategic advantage, since having products early increases the possible market introduction window. Meanwhile, traditional long lead times and high inventory levels may be less appropriate and more costly endeavors that may not even achieve product parity [4]. To compress the product lead time was the priority task to help companies keep their competitiveness [5]. To fulfil this aim, fundamental changes must be made in every function that affects the delivery of the product. However, most existing literature focuses on the lead time in the traditional software industry, which can be different in the case of the mobile game apps. We herein in this paper explore the contents of lead time in the mobile gaming industry. We designed a series of steps to explore the real situation of lead time in the mobile gaming industry. Differences between mobile gaming and traditional software industries are also of interest to be explored.       Objectives. The main purpose of our research was to study the lead time which would be caused during the process of implementing users’ requirements. We tried to achieve the purpose from two aspects: First, we investigated whether there were differences in the lead time of different requirement types. Second, we investigated whether the lead time differences existed in different types of mobile games.   Methods. Our group used Case Study as the main research method to investigate the lead time in real cases.   Results. .First, there were differences in the lead time of implementing different types of requirements. Such as the lead time of bug fix types of requirements would be shorter than feature added types of requirements. Second, different types of mobile game apps had differences in the lead time. For example, MOBA games would take longer time on Function update or Feature request types of requirements, and FPS games would take longer time on exclusive event types of requirements. The details would be shown in part 4.2 and 4.3.   Conclusions. Two research questions in our thesis were answered. When mobile game companies dealt with requirements in user feedback, the lead time objectively existed. We could calculate the length of the lead time of different types of requirements. Moreover, different types of requirements had various lead times. For example, the lead time caused by bug fixing requirement would be shorter compared with that of adding new functions. Kvalitetssäkring och ledtidsreducering av produktionsprocess – brandsågen / Quality assurance and lead time reduction in the production process of fire-resistant glass

Detta arbete har utförts på avdelningen för produktion av brandglas hos en av Sveriges främsta glasleverantörer, Martin G Anderson. Företaget upplever i dagsläget låg lönsamhet för deras brandglasprodukter. Anledningen till detta beror på problem i form av långa ledtider, stökiga arbetsutrymmen och allmän oreda på avdelningen. Målet med arbetet har således fokuserat på att kartlägga slöserier i tillverkningsprocessen för brandglas som ger upphov till dessa problem, samt reducera ledtiden och samtidigt kvalitetssäkra processen. Arbetets metodgång är av en analyserande karaktär, där en stor del av tiden ägnats åt insamling av data i form av observationer, intervjuer samt litteraturstudier.  Arbetet initierades med att undersöka nuläget och utföra en nulägesanalys. Manuella tidtagningar utfördes under fyra veckor i syfte att få en bild över hur ledtiden ser ut i dagsläget. Därefter användes verktyg inom Lean för att analysera den information som sammanställts i nulägesbeskrivningen. Exempel på verktyg som tillämpats är styrdiagram, 7+1 leanslöserier samt rotorsaksverktyget 5 varför.  När nuläget var känt och insamlad data analyserad, tillämpades Lean verktyget 5S för att reducera de slöseri som identifierats i processen. En ny manuell tidtagning utfördes där resultatet visar en 19% reducering av ledtiden. Slutligen presenteras förslag till fortsatt arbete. Dessa förslag består bland annat av fortsatt tillämpning av verktyget 5S, men även hur en mer hållbar process kan åstadkommas utifrån social hållbarhet. / This project has been carried out in the department for the production of fire-resistant glass products at one of Sweden's leading glass suppliers, Martin G Anderson. The company currently experiences low profitability for their fire-glass products. The reason for this is due to problems in the form of long lead times, messy areas and general disorder in the department. The goal of the project has thus been focused on locating wastes in the production process for fire-resistant glass that causes these problems, as well as reducing lead time and at the same time assuring a high process quality. The methodology of the work is of an analytical nature, where a large part of the time has been devoted to the collection of data in the form of observations, interviews and literature studies. The project was initiated by investigating the current situation and performing a current situation analysis. Manual timings were carried out during four weeks in order to get a picture of what the lead time looks like today. Subsequently, tools within Lean were used to analyze the information compiled in the current description. Examples of tools used are control diagrams, 7 + 1 lean waste and the root cause analysis 5 why. Once the known state and collected data were analyzed, the Lean tool 5S was applied to reduce the waste identified in the process. A new manual timing was performed where the result shows a 19% reduction in lead time. Finally, proposals for further work are presented. These proposals include, among other things, continued application of the 5S tool, but also how a more sustainable process can be achieved based on social sustainability.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand which significantparameters affect OTD within an ATO company, and furthermore develop a model which wouldenhance proactive work in order to achieve a higher OTD.Design/methodology/approach - The data is primarily of qualitative nature, employing semistructuredinterviews and workshop, with backup from quantitative production data. Anabductive approach was applied by iterating and aligning findings with relevant literature andtheory. These mixed methodologies created a triangulation of data, which through our analysishelp with the validation of our conclusions.Findings - Through our findings we can conclude that significant parameters which lowers OTDfor an ATO company can be found all through the supply chain. For this thesis and its model,parameters were chosen based on their ability to be quantified. For ABB GA Products, we found36 significant parameters as well as a systematic approach for an ATO company to iteratively gothrough them to investigate which orders are affected by which flags. Through this approach anATO company should be able to work more proactively towards higher OTD.Research limitations/implications - This thesis is conducted through a case study at ABB GAProducts only, which should be considered when using the results for further research.Practical implications - Specifies a logical scheme to classify risk of delayed orders.Originality/value - Advances theory in production and operations management regardingperformance measurement, towards a more proactive approach of measuring reactive KPI’s

Development of an Order Promising Framework for Furniture Industry

The U.S. furniture industry is facing intense foreign competition due to globalization. U.S. Competitiveness Survey identified responsiveness and on-time delivery as the major strategic areas to improve competitive advantage. To enable the U.S. furniture industry to become more responsive to customers and simultaneously ensure on-time delivery, an order promising framework was proposed for a make-to-order environment. The proposed order promising strategy was to implement advanced scheduling based on a drum-rope-buffer control system. A study was conducted on an upholstery manufacturing industry to demonstrate the potential lead-time improvement that may arise from implementing the proposed strategy. To carry out the study, a prototype database application was developed based on the operational policy of the example company to support order promising. The study results showed a possible improvement of 67% in the current lead-time performance of the company. Finally, a set of recommendations was made to develop an order promising system for the furniture industry.

The mining industry of the future has a strong focus on sustainability, which for example is reflected in the Swedish mining industry association Swemin´s goal of a mining industry free of carbon dioxide in 2035. To make this possible, a broad investment is now being made in the electrification of mining machines, which is believed to have great potential for reducing emissions. Epiroc Rock Drills AB is a driving force in the transition to battery-driven vehicles and has had electric machines in its product catalog for several years. From 2022, they have started to assemble batteries in-house that were previously assembled by the supplier. This thesis investigates the streamlining opportunities for the assembly process for the batteries ST14, MT42, ST1030 and MLE regarding lead time. First, a description and analysis of the current situation were carried out where five areas were identified to have an impact on the assembly process. This resulted in several proposed general improvements: developing a system for handling proposed improvement, more distinct communication of the quality philosophy, better resource efficiency and improvement of kitting and 5S.  In addition, three new layout proposals were developed which were analyzed and weighted to select the most suitable proposal under the current conditions. The result was a layout where ST14 and MT42 models are assembled in two mixed model assembly lines and ST1030 and MLE are assembled by fixed position. Continued research includes making data collection when the processes are more mature and to apply the data on the study´s suggested improvements. / Framtidens gruvindustri har ett stort fokus på hållbarhet vilket bl.a. speglas i den svenska branschorganisationen Svemins målsättning om en koldioxidfri gruvdrift år 2035. För att detta ska vara möjligt sker nu en bred satsning på elektrifiering av gruvmaskiner vilket bedöms ha en enorm potential för att minska utsläppen. Epiroc Rock Drills AB är drivande i omställningen till batteridrift och har haft elmaskiner i sitt sortiment ett antal år. Från och med 2022 har de även tagit över montering av tillhörande batterier som tidigare monterats av leverantör. För att klara av att möta framtidens efterfrågan undersöker detta examensarbete vilka möjligheter det finns till effektivisering av monteringsprocessen för batterierna ST14, MT42, ST1030 och MLE med avseende på ledtid. Först genomfördes en nulägesbeskrivning och nulägesanalys där fem områden identifierades ha inverkan på monteringsprocessen. Det mynnade sedan ut i ett antal generella förbättringsförslag: utvecklat system för hantering av förbättringsförslag, tydligare kommunikation av kvalitetsfilosofi, bättre resurseffektivitet samt förbättring av kittning och 5S.  Dessutom togs tre nya layoutförslag fram som analyserades och viktades för att välja ut det under förutsättningarna mest lämpade förslaget. Det resulterade i en layout där ST14 och MT42 monteras på två blandflödeslinor och ST1030 och MLE monteras genom fast position. Fortsatt arbete inkluderar att göra ny datainsamling när processerna är mer mogna och applicera det på studiens förbättringsförslag.

An Application of Lean Thinking to the Furniture Engineering Process

Efficient engineering processes are critically important for furniture manufacturers. Engineering impacts the production cost, design quality, product lead time, and customer satisfaction. This research presents a systematic approach to analyze a furniture engineering process through a case study. The research was conducted through a case study in a furniture plant located in China, producing American style furniture products. The first stage was to investigate the company's current engineering process, identify non value-added activities, and analyze the engineering performance based on selected Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as lead time, document error rate, and engineering throughput. A survey questionnaire was sent out to the engineering group to determine the current engineering efficiency. Results show that "product complexity" and "engineer competency" are the two most influential factors that impact engineering lead time and quality. In the second stage, value stream mapping was used to analyze an upholstery furniture engineering process. The approach encompasses an analysis of the current state of the engineering process and the proposal of a lean future state value stream map (VSM). Results from the current state VSM show, that the value-added ratio of the current engineering process is only 26%. Several engineering steps present deficiency such as the processes of creating drawings, compile mass production documents, check and sign-off engineering documents, create CNC programs, and generate packaging files. Based on current state VSM analysis, the researcher focused on transforming these processes to eliminate waste and to propose the best practices for the future state VSM. From this research, it shows that current processes include a large amount of non-value adding activities such as waiting, extra processing, rework, excess motion, transportation, underutilized people, and inefficient information. These non-value adding activities are interfering with engineers' ability to prepare engineering documents for downstream jobs and affecting the overall manufacturing process. The VSM is effective to provide the visual control over the engineering process for implementing lean transformations. / Master of Science
