Monstrous soundscapes : listening to the voice of the monster in Greek epic, lyric, and tragedy

Silverblank, Hannah January 2017 (has links)
Although mythological monsters have rarely been examined in any collective and comprehensive manner, they constitute an important cosmic presence in archaic and classical Greek poetry. This thesis brings together insights from the scholarly areas of 'monster studies' and the 'sensory turn' in order to offer readings of the sounds made by monsters. I argue that the figure of the monster in Greek poetry, although it has positive attributes, does not have a fixed definition or position within the cosmos. Instead of using definitions of monstrosity to think about the role and status of Greek monsters, this thesis demonstrates that by listening to the sounds of the monster's voice, it is possible to chart its position in the cosmos. Monsters with incomprehensible, cacophonous, or dangerous voices pose greater threats to cosmic order; those whose voices are semiotic and anthropomorphic typically pose less serious threats. The thesis explores the shifting depictions of monsters according to genre and author. In Chapter 1, 'Hesiod's Theogony: The Role of Monstrosity in the Cosmos', I consider Hesiod's genealogies of monsters that circulate and threaten in the nonhuman realm, while the universe is still undergoing processes of organisation. Chapter 2, 'Homer's Odyssey: Mingling with Monsters', discusses the monster whom Odysseus encounters and even imitates in order to survive his exchanges with them. In Chapter 3, 'Monsters in Greek Lyric Poetry: Voices of Defeat', I examine Stesichorus' Geryoneis and the presence of Centaurs, Typhon, and Gorgons in Pindar's Pythian 1, 2, 3, and 12. In lyric, we find that these monsters are typically presented in terms of the monster's experience of defeat at the hands of a hero or a god. This discussion is followed by two chapters that explore the presence of the monster in Greek tragedy, entitled 'Centripetal Monsters in Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound and Oresteia' and 'Centrifugal Monsters in Greek Tragedy: Euripides and Sophocles.' Here, I argue that in tragedy the monster, or the abstractly 'monstrous', is located within the figure of the human being and within the polis. The coda, 'Monstrous Mimesis and the Power of Sound', considers not only monstrous voices, but monstrous music, examining the mythology surrounding the aulos and looking at the sonic developments generated by the New Musicians.

Édition critique des "Poësies chrestiennes" (1660) d'Antoine Godeau précédée d'une introduction sur la pastorale lyrique et catholique de cet auteur / Edition of the "Poësies Chrestiennes" (1660) by Antoine Godeau with a study of his pastoral and Catholic poetry

Venner, Camille 21 October 2016 (has links)
Antoine Godeau (1605-1672) first published the Poësies Chrestiennes in 1633 in the context of the Catholic Reformation which encouraged spiritual revival. This lyric collection is emblematic of his comprehensive poetic and spiritual work. Godeau became the Bishop of Grasse in 1636 and devoted his poetic gifts to enlightening the readers. This new edition is the latest version of the Poësies Chrestiennes (1660), which is pastoral Catholic verse addressed to the socialites of the time. The versatile poet expressed himself in various forms, registers and topics to convey the Christian dogma and the Bible. The content and the purpose of the book fluctuated. The Poësies chrestiennes was thus a field for experimentation : it became Antoine Godeau's laboratory for all his pastoral and lyric work. The poet defined the principles of a poetry which was based on the conciliation of divine enthusiasm and reason, a poetry where grace and beauty met. The paraphrase of the Scriptures was an opportunity to explore the conciliation of Parnassus and Calvary, as well as the specificity of a classical poetic language in the making, endowing it with gentleness and clarity. Poetry appeared to be the ideal way to instill Christian truths in the heart of the faithful. The religious conversion of secular literary rhetoric prepared the layman to hear the poet-preacher’s vigorous speech. Antoine Godeau tempered his Augustinian anthropology by promoting a life both wordly and pious, in chime with the ideal of Christian “honnêteté”. The poet spiritualized profane aesthetics, which showed his unrelenting desire to adapt his conversion discourse to a public eager to be edified by the “delectare”.

Paulicéia Desvairada was the first book of modern poetry published in Brazil. The work marks the beginning of the break up with traditional poetic structures with innovative language and stylistic features, such as free and polyphonic verses and dissonances. In Lira Paulistana, innovations are giving way to more regular verses with rhymes and choruses. These two poetic works, apart for over twenty years, poeticized the city of São Paulo in different ways, this place is the great theme of the poems. In Paulicéia Desvairada, the São Paulo city still has remnants of a provincial past, the self-lyrical lies in the crowd and on the streets who are going through a process of modernization. In Lira Paulistana, the city of São Paulo is now a metropolis, the self-lyrical feel even more in the anonymity of this modern streets. In this case, we propose to analyze some poems of Paulicéia Desvairada (1922) and Lira Paulistana (1945), in order to focus our attention between the "I" and the "city", already well identified by criticals, who are aware to the concept of polissensorial and semanticized space and historical and social aspects of the city of São Paulo in the 1920s and 1940s. As we approached these two works of the writer, we realized that he sees some problems about the changes in the city and the consequences caused by these changes, which, for him, it fades the human relationship away.

Incipit : a Vita Nova e a irrupção da lirica moderna / Incipit : the Vita Nova and the irruption of modern lyric

In this study, we propose a renewed understanding of Dante Alighieri¿s work based on the hypothesis that his first book, the Vita Nova, offers a representation of the irruption of modern lyric. Initially, we try to determine the meaning of this irruption (and, then, of this representation) inspired by Walter Benjamin¿s theory of origin (Ursprung). After, we insist on the pertinence of a reconstruction of the concept of modernity, since its first formulations still in the Middle Ages, as we have Dante¿s work in view, and more specifically the Vita Nova. Finally, we analyze the Vita Nova from four fundamental figures it bequeaths ¿ not just as thematic axes, but as elements of formalization ¿ to the forthcoming lyric: Memory, Love, Secret, Death / Doutorado / Literatura Geral e Comparada / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

vom Schemm, A. (Axel) 24 November 2006 (has links)
Abstract In view of numerous texts from completely different genres the study shows to what extent and degree of differentiation the topic soccer is covered in German-language literature and allows general conclusions on a poetics of sport. Here solely German-language literary sources are considered. The work is divided into a theoretical and a text-related part. In the former section the approaches to the topic – on one hand via German studies and on the other hand via interdisciplinary sport science – is made clear by means of basic considerations on the questions “what is literature?” and “what is sport”. In addition, a revisable basis for the subsequent studies is provided. The text-related part – in turn subdivided according to the three main genres lyric poetry, epic poetry and drama – shows how exactly soccer appears as literary subject. Formal differences induced by the form of presentation within a genre (sonnet vs. visual poetry) or across genres (detective story vs. modern drama) take effect as well as context-related variations of the subject (soccer as symbolic carrier of meaning vs. soccer as vehicle for transporting ethical values). A concluding chapter each on the realization of the sport models introduced in the theoretical part in literary practice follow the individual genre areas. The various aspects that can be attributed to a poetics of sport conclude the study in a summarizing part. Not least here the comprehensiveness of the findings can be seen.

Vanishing Act

Pryor, Caitlin 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is comprised of a collection of poems preceded by a critical preface. The preface reconsiders the value of discontinuous poetic forms and advocates a return to lyric as an antidote to the toxic aspects of what Tony Hoagland terms “the skittery poem of our moment.” I consider poems by Wendy Xu, Kevin Prufer, Sharon Olds, and Stephen Dunn in depth to facilitate a discussion about the value of a more centrist position between the poles of supreme discontinuity and totalizing continuity. Though poets working in discontinuous forms are rightly skeptical of the hierarchies that govern narrative and linear forms, as Czesław Miłosz notes in The Witness of Poetry, “a poet discovers a secret, namely that he can be faithful to real things only by arranging them hierarchically.” In my own poems, I make use of the hierarchies of ordered perception in lyric and narrative forms to faithfully illuminate the collapsed structures of my own family history in the shadow of Detroit. I practice the principles I advocate in the preface, using a continuous form to address fractured realities in a busy, disordered age when poets often seek forms as fragmented as their perceptions. These poems are distinctly American, but because there is no true royalty in America, our great cultural and economic institutions—television, music, film, magazines, and big business—take the place of the castle (the book’s emblem) while Michael Jackson ultimately rises as the commanding dead king whose passing prompts contemplation of the viability of popular culture, family, history, and geography. The fallen structures that litter the work are many: the twin towers, chess rooks, bounce castles, nuclear families, the auto industry. However, the sole structure cohering the whole is that of a lyric voice whose authority is derived through lived experience and presented in rich, continuous poetic forms.

A collection of poems navigating and negotiating the powerful mythological forces in the speaker’s life, from Irish revolutionary history to “canonical” literary figures to American comic books. These poems ask the reader to consider how language, narrative, and art shape the world, and so how we come to know ourselves through the texts—no matter their form or shape—we encounter.

Musiklyrikens critical literacy-utvecklande potential : En normkritisk lyrikanalys av Joakim Bergs låttexter / The potential of developing critical literacy through lyric poetry : A norm critical analysis of Joakim Berg’s lyric poetry

Wadsten, Clara January 2024 (has links)
