Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 21st Century: The Pedagogical Possibilities and Limitations for Transformative Education

Adjei, Paul Banahene 20 August 2012 (has links)
The current trend of global violence and their impact on families and communities as well as the field of university education is scary for a society that is struggling with this false sense of apathy and complacency. How did the ordinary people get seduced to the idea that there is no way out of this global assault? How then do we extricate ourselves from this “tortured consciousness” (Asante, 2007) and this false sense of “nihilism” (West, 1994) and recoup this “incommensurable loss” (Simmons, 2010) to global violence? Even more crucial, where is the place of education in retrieving this incommensurable loss while providing hope and possibility for a better future? Provoked by the desire to have answers to these questions, the dissertation relies on the knowledge and experiences of twenty qualitatively selected university activists and existing literature to critically examine the non-violent praxes of Gandhi and King, Jr. and their pedagogical implications for transformative university education. The dissertation further draws on the knowledge of Frantz Fanon and Malcolm X to bring complex and nuanced readings to violence and non-violence. The dissertation notes that violence and non-violence are not mutually exclusive as already known. The dissertation also notes that while resistive violence may be justified, it does not necessarily guarantee true transformation, reconciliation, and healing. Instead, love, humility, truth, dialogue, non-violent direct action, discipline, and spirituality are salient in achieving true transformation in university activism. The dissertation further observes that educational activism is more than walking on the street with placards to protest against institutional violence. Sometimes, the secret activism that is done strategically within the corridors of power can achieve more far-reaching results than the open protest against power on the street. The dissertation concludes with six key non-violent strategies that can help in social and political mobilization of university students for transformative university education.

Claudio Boning 30 July 2013 (has links)
The subject of this paper is the mysticism which underlies Martin Luthers theology. Passing through the influence of medieval mysticism in Luthers theology and through the confrontation with the enthusiast movement, we point out the mystical nuances of Luthers theology. Through bibliographic research, the current tendencies with regard to this theme are presented. We highlight the research carried out by the Finnish researchers, initiated by Tuomo Mannermaa who has pointed out the importance of the concept of unio mystica in Luthers theology. Likewise, we will present the diversification of this research and its reception by the German and North American theologians. Luthers contribution to Latin American reflection will be brought to light, highlighting the convergences of Luthers mysticism with the Liberation mysticism. The first chapter will deal with Luthers context. The second chapter will deal with the criticism which Luther made of the speculative mysticism which influenced the enthusiast movement and the mysticism present in Luthers theology. The third chapter presents the current panorama of the research on mysticism in Luther. The Finnish contribution is the most significant in this area. In the Finnish research the presence of Christ in the faith is central. Without this real presence it would be impossible to speak of unio. Besides this, we will present the diversification of the Finnish school and receptions in the areas of German and North American theology. The final movement of our paper will be to reflect on the contributions of Luthers mysticism for the current reflection on Christian mysticism for our context.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Suenia Barbosa de Almeida.pdf: 2650803 bytes, checksum: 7e3ab7090b33267118faf8484b160778 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-18 / Addresses issues relevant to the music and its relationship with the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, whose main exponent the Augustinian monk Martin Luther. Pointed out the implications of the ideals of the Reformation in the art of music because he has exercised very important role in disseminating the principles Lutherans. Shows the place occupied by music in the path of reformer from his childhood to the academic context and the relevance of this theme throughout his work. Join the legacy left by the reformer to the world of liturgical music and its impact to this day. Presents Luther as a composer and reveals his intention of making music, especially those intended for the liturgy, a prerogative of all participants of the masses, not just the clergy, as was the case until then. Emphasizes the uses of music in the work of the reformer who view it as a pedagogical tool, to be a communication vehicle for their doctrines, and also as an object of study, since their education is encouraged by him from the early grades. It concludes that Luther still appears relevant to contemporary given their concern to make use of music as a training tool and also for information / Aborda questões pertinentes à música e sua relação com a Reforma Protestante do século XVI, que tem como principal expoente o Monge Agostiniano Martinho Lutero.

Luther the Augustinian: Augustine, Pelagianism and Luther's Philosophy of Man

McGinnis, Jon D. (Jon David) 08 1900 (has links)
Augustine has had a large influence on the development of western theology, and nowhere is this more obvious that in Martin Luther's understanding of God, humankind and grace. Yet at the same time there are also significant differences in the two churchmen's thought. Sometimes these differences are subtle, such as their views of the state; other times they are not so subtle, such as their positions on free will or their praise of philosophy and its usefulness in sounding the depth of Christianity. In order to best explain these varying views, one must look at Augustine's and Luther's diverging opinions of man's nature where one will see that the dissimilarities are best understood in light of Luther's pessimistic view of humanity.

Reformationserinnerung im Wandel: Zur Rezeptionsgeschichte Martin Luthers und der „deutschen“ Reformation 1817 bis 2017

Kuhlemann, Frank-Michael 09 December 2020 (has links)
