Martin Luther: Father of Freedom or Father of Authoritarianism

Mays, Gladys Dezell 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis endeavors to reveal that Martin Luther's dogmatic adherence to one absolute interpretation of the Word of God restricted man's freedom, both religious and personal. His intolerant and authoritarian attitude toward individualistic groups, called into existence by his polemics stressing Christian freedom, is broadly discussed. Luther's theology denied man responsibility for his salvation, either through works, the exercise of divine reason, or through living a lifestyle in the imitation of Christ, leaving man with the inability to accept responsibility for his actions. The authoritarian religions that developed after Luther brought confusion and indifference regarding the nature of religion, leaving modern man in search of alternate authorities in which to place his faith and assume responsibility for his actions, thereby limiting his independence and freedom.

Igreja, estado e educação em Martinho Lutero: uma análise das origens do direito à educação / Church, state and education in Martin Luther: an analysis of origin of right to education.

Barbosa, Luciane Muniz Ribeiro 01 November 2007 (has links)
The objective of this work is to analyze the relationship among the Church, State and the Educational System during the Protestant Reformation in 16th century, focusing actions of Martin Luther. Having as a main objective a religious reform creation, Luther also presented plans for changing the current educational system. The scenario Luther was inserted was based on an educational system ruled and maintained by the Church, and he proposes both system organizational changes (ranging items such as curriculum, methods, teachers, financing plans, among others) and the principles and basement that should conduct this educational system, supporting that it should be every people (including girls), mandatory attending, useful for the society and sustained by the State. He opened a discussion about the origin of a public elementary school, in line with to the deeds of \"Brother-Hoods\", Roman Catholic clerical group that also promoted some practice complying with that since 14th century, using the reformer ideas. However, the State role that Luther attributes to the educational system is the kernel of this work, through analyzes of the Luther formation of the \"State\" concept, considering the period when the analysis was taken as well as the approach the authorities had with the underlying subject. Although many of Luther\'s ideas were applied after his death, and mainly in the centuries to follow, it\'s important to highlight the contributions he brought to make the educational system as a State duty and a right for all the citizens.

Battle for the boulevard

Antoine, Patricia Luann 01 January 1992 (has links)
This study explored the nature of community power and decision-making surrounding the renaming of Portland's Union Avenue in honor of the slain civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. Employing an integrated theoretical framework based on G. William Domhoff's (1967) perspective of the compatibility of c. Wright Mills' Power Elite Model (1956) and Robert A. Dahl's Pluralist Model (1961) plus Claude s. Fischer's (1982) perspective on the nature of the urban social environment, this study attempted to provide insight into and understanding of the dynamics involved in the controversy that developed over the efforts to rename a street for Dr. King, the decision-making process, and the apparent motivations of the participants.

Kallelse och kön : Schabloner i läsning av Matteusevangeliets berättelser / Vocation and Gender Reinterpreted : Patterns in the Narratives of the Gospel of Matthew

Nahnfeldt, Cecilia January 2006 (has links)

The concept of vocation is central to the Christian tradition and views of life. In the Lutheran tradition vocation is understood as a word describing how man’s view of himself as well as his view of his duties are shaped in relation to God. Although not meant to exclude women, the concept of vocation has been clearly gendered. The references to vocation are manifold, ranging from the realms of individual life choices to life in communities and in the church.

The purpose of this study is to examine the concept of vocation in the perspective of Scriptural Criticism in order to contribute to an understanding of the ambiguous and shifting usage of the term, and to analyse the relationship between vocation and gender, historically and in relation to the Gospel of Matthew, thus also contributing to the construction of a gender aware theology of vocation. In the study Scriptural Criticism, a model for interpretation developed by Cristina Grenholm and Daniel Patte, in which text, theology, and life are combined in mutual and critical interaction, is used as a theoretical frame and interpretative method. Patriarchal and androcentric patterns are fundamental analytical concepts.

The study shows that the pattern of vocation changed during the 19th century from being a patriarchal pattern to an androcentric pattern. These patterns are apprehended as theological interpretations that have come to a stop, and thus applied to new contexts without reinterpretation. In common language the word vocation (or calling) is used as a fixed pattern without reinterpretation, and so mediating a life interpretation that is not renewed in relation either to individual life or to life in social community. By rereading vocation in relation to the narratives of the Gospel of Matthew and contemporary views of men’s and women’s shared life conditions, its fixed patterns can be reevaluated and reinterpreted. The connection between patterns of gender and patterns of vocation can be dissolved, so that vocation as a concept loses its association with the enforced subordination of women.

The study draws attention to the fact that vocation can neither be unequivocally understood as a concept of theology, nor as textually mediated, nor as a life experience. Rather, it is a word that serves as a powerful tool for understanding life, bringing together experiences, narratives, and conceptions of God and the human being. Two patterns of vocation are revealed through the scriptural critical reading of the Gospel of Matthew. These patterns are related to different hierarchical positions, but are not univocally based on gender. The interpreter is underscored to have an important role. The gendered stereotypes of vocation are possible but not necessary to reproduce. In the process of interpretation there are opportunities to reconsider earlier interpreters ways of understanding the relation between vocation and gender. This is a challenging and empowering responsibility.

"Itt heligt gestebodh" : En studie av Laurentius Petris syn på prästens roll i nattvarden samt Kristi närvaro i densamma. / "Convivium sacrum" : A Study of Laurentius Petri's Approach to the Priest's Role in the Eucharist and Christ's Presence in it.

Stark, Tobias January 2010 (has links)

Black, Brown, and Poor: Martin Luther King Jr., the Poor People's Campaign, and Its Legacies

Mantler, Gordon K 24 April 2008 (has links)
Envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1967, the Poor People's Campaign (PPC) represented a bold attempt to revitalize the black freedom struggle as a movement explicitly based on class, not race. Incorporating African Americans, ethnic Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, American Indians, and poor whites, the PPC sought a broad coalition to travel to Washington, D.C., and pressure the government to fulfill the promise of the War on Poverty. Because of King's death and the campaign's subsequent premature end amid rain-driven, ankle-deep mud and just a few, isolated policy achievements, observers then and scholars since have dismissed the campaign as not only a colossal failure, but also the death knell of the modern freedom struggle. Using a wide range of sources - from little-used archives and Federal Bureau of Investigation files to periodicals and oral histories - this project recovers the broader significance of the campaign. Rejecting the paradigm of success and failure and placing the PPC in the broader context of the era's other social movements, my analysis opens the door to the larger complexity of this pivotal moment of the 1960s. By highlighting the often daunting obstacles to building an alliance of the poor, particularly among blacks and ethnic Mexicans, this study prompts new questions. How do poor people emancipate themselves? And why do we as scholars routinely expect poor people to have solidarity across racial and ethnic lines? In fact, the campaign did spark a tentative but serious conversation on how to organize effectively across these barriers. But the PPC also assisted other burgeoning social movements, such as the Chicano movement, find their own voices on the national scene, build activist networks, and deepen the sophistication of their own power analyses, especially after returning home. Not only does this project challenge the continued dominance of a black-white racial framework in historical scholarship, it also undermines the civil rights master narrative by exploring activism after 1968. In addition, it recognizes the often-competing, ethnic-driven social constructions of poverty, and situates this discussion at the intersection of the local and the national. / Dissertation
