The ethnography presented here was produced by the Ticuna artisans women from two distinct regions in the state of Amazonas: one by the upper Solimões river, in three communities that make up the Santo Antonio Indigenous community and in the Barro Vermelho community, and, in Manaus, by some Ticuna artisans women who live in the capital. It is a record of the Ticuna women’s practice, made by monitoring the baskets making process, since the moments prior to the weaving activity (harvesting, drying, dyeing), until the connections that such activity establish in social life and in their cultural prescriptions. Along the way, I identified counting processes, forms of material selection, methods used to measure, among other features observed in the making of baskets and that are in the categories of understanding. It shows how much artisans' practice is representative and how much it highlights the place of women in their society, either because of their prestige in the way today's communities closest to the cities are organized, or due to their authority as having the knowledge of the Ticuna ritual practices. The drawings in the pacará baskets were identified and classified as a sign, and its meanings attributed by the Ticunas, considering the combination of the different manifestations that these representations appear in ritual practices and artifacts. Finally, we make an overview of the communities surveyed and the network that revolves around the practice of women, implying aspects of culture, social life and interaction with the surrounding society.

José Guilherme Allen Lima 07 August 2018 (has links)
This work presents a survey on the Brazilian production of experimental lutherie, with emphasis on the production over the last two decades. A framework of references related to this production in the European and American literature is outlined as an introduction, as well as the works of some key artists and creators whose production influenced experimental instrument building practices in the 20th century. In the second chapter I make a survey of references on this type of production in Brazil, as well a profile of artists active in the country for the last 20 years, detailing in most cases some of his works. Based on this outline, I carry out a more detailed study on the instrument known as gatorra, manufactured by Tony da Gatorra, an artisan, technician and musician who created his instrument in the 1990s from scrap materials, reused electronic components and the combination of electronic circuits sound generators. Finally, I relate the production studied with references that deal with the notion of material culture, some of which already make an approximation with musical and artistic activity

Uma trajetória do design do livro didático no Brasil: a Companhia Editora Nacional, 1926-1980 / A trajectory of school textbook design in Brazil: the Companhia Editora Nacional, 1926-1980.

Moraes, Didier Dominique Cerqueira Dias de 13 December 2016 (has links)
The focus of this investigation was the visuality and materiality of school textbooks produced in Brazil by the Companhia Editora Nacional from its inception in 1926 by writer Monteiro Lobato and Octalles Mar- condes Ferreira to 1980, when the enterprise was incorporated into a publishing group operating under a proprietary publishing approach. For three decades, Nacional was the country\'s largest publisher, and its titles became integral to the intellectual training of, as well as to the development of book appreciation among, a number of Brazilian generations, while helping to build both individual and collective memory and integrate Brazil\'s material and visual culture during the period. As part of this panoramic, exploratory investigation of editorial graphic memory, an extensive survey was conducted willing to push the inclusion of school textbooks--to date poorly studied, given their limited useful lifespan and lack of first-hand liter- ary or scientific value--into a roster of graphic artifacts insufficiently addressed in investigations of Bra- zilian design history and material culture. Drawing exclusively on the material and visual characteristics of the books, six periods were identified in the design production at Nacional. For each period, the study addressed possible connections between, on the one hand, materiality and visuality and, on the other, the principal factors or contexts influencing the material and visual character of textbooks--namely, education (educational structure, pedagogical approaches, and school culture), production (technology and work practices), and the visual and typographic languages available at the time. A general trajectory was identified in this evolution, spanning from an initial point in time, characterized by the stark simplicity and formality of all-type covers and standardized textblock typography and layout, to a final period, character- ized by handmade or photography-based artwork and more individualized solutions, with a strong pres- ence of pictorial elements in the textblock. In addition to the growing refinement of graphic technologies for image reproduction, the trajectory reveals an evolution of the relationships established between school culture and other spheres of social life in terms of visuality, extending from an initial point in time, marked by a more pronounced isolation from and avoidance of influences foreign to the school culture, to a period of more evident flexibility and permeability to these influences, particularly those conveyed by mass media, with their intrinsic valuing of images.

Senhoras e criadas no espaço doméstico, São Paulo (1875-1928) / Mistresses and servants in domestic world, São Paulo (1875-1928)

Santos, Simone Andriani dos 25 August 2015 (has links)
This work is an attempt to analyze the relations between servants and mistresses, in São Paulo, between the 1870s and 1920s, from ethnic, social and gender differences (re)produced in the household. Considering different kinds of manuals etiquette, housekeeping, childcare and hygiene and health we intend to understand how identities are connected with the use of objects and spaces in the house.

Att skapa ett kulturarv

Smits, Vivian January 2019 (has links)
This study aims at improving cooperation and communication between actors in the field of Swedish contract archaeology in order to maximize the benefits of their work. It addresses two research questions: How did the development of archaeology into contract archaeology as an independent business affect museum collections in Sweden? And: How do communication and terminology affect the processes that transform material culture into cultural heritage? Departing from “actor-network-theory” and taking a linguistic perspective, I first examine closely some important processes and structures behind the making of heritage. The background of contemporary contract archaeology is then illuminated through a literature study focusing on the history of and current practices in contract archaeology, conservation practice and museum management. Later, I investigate the particular effects of contract archaeology on museum collections. This is based in part on a comparative analysis of selection and de-selection processes of artefacts in collections and partly on a survey among contract archaeologists. I conclude with a discourse analysis of policies and other governing documents, highlighting the significance of communication and terminology in processes during which archaeological artefacts acquire a new identity as cultural heritage. The study shows how the contemporary system of contract archaeology creates a biased representation of (pre-)history, as selection and de-selection processes of artefacts in museum collections are affected by various internal practices and external demands that ultimately shape cultural heritage. This bias is not helped by the fact that those collecting the artefacts in the field use different terminology compared with those collecting in museums. I argue that behind this gap lies the “cultural heritage paradox” which derives from different understandings and aims of cultural heritage by different actors.

Transforming Rags to Riches? : Material Culture in Cendrillon and Pretty Woman

Cheng, Ya Wen Unknown Date (has links)
To de-mythicize a fairy tale means to discover its cultural, historical and political aspects and therefore, in my thesis, it helps to distinguish Perrault’s Cendrillon (1697) from other Cinderella variants. My thesis approaches Perrault’s Cendrillon in a materialist method: with the employment of the late seventeenth-century French material culture, Cendrillon is transformed into a modernized literary fairy tale about her restoration to her original social status. This French Cinderella is quite distinct from the traditional rags-to-riches Cinderella story since Perrault champions a modernism with which he intends to change the future of the French literature. The film Pretty Woman (1990) is to serve as a contrast and to elucidate the idea that different eras make different Cinderella stories. The Cinderella in the Anglophone world is getting more and more debased and the Americanized Cinderella is the most debased ever, the street walker. Her rags-to-riches transformation manifests the social expectations toward in the eighties toward what a woman should be and possess. On the other hand, there is another side of the story in the film. On Edward’s part, I am going to approach the material culture via American masculinities in order to illustrate what a man should be and have. Besides, Edward also plays the roles of the male Cinderella and the fairy godfather in the film. The two roles Edward plays will be further developed in my thesis. The materialist approach has its own limits: it cannot include the conformist and the individualist aspects and I thus fail to incorporate it in my thesis.

Dialectic of Celebrity Politics: Identifying Public Personalities and Political Performers in Twenty-First Century America

Serizawa, Molly M 01 April 2013 (has links)
‘Celebrity’ has become a growing field of critical inquiry and cultural interest in twenty-first century society. Celebrities embody a host of meanings and engender larger ideological and discursive practices, in which they articulate expressions of social, cultural and political power that attach meaning to public individuals. Beginning with the late-twentieth century, celebrities have come to occupy spaces that exist beyond popular culture platforms, most notably in politics and international diplomacy. In spite of its typical association with superficial discussions of gossip and cheap entertainment, celebrities have become the site of anxiety in a capitalist society. To come to terms with these growing anxieties concerning celebrity and its accoutrements, this thesis explores the embedded complexities and consequences of the celebrity system within the framework of what has dubiously been called ‘celebrity politics.’ Through a detailed examination of this phenomenon, this thesis explores the coalescing spheres of Hollywood and the White House, where ‘celebrity’ and ‘politician’ have become interchangeable monikers. In addition to examining the historical conditions that have given rise to the phenomenon, this study examines contemporary articulations of the ‘celebrity politician,’ focusing on Angelina Jolie, Sean Penn and President Barack Obama. Discussion of these figures is framed by critical theory and media studies to better understand their location within the contemporary Western landscape.

Martínez Ruiz-Funes, Mª José 05 March 2013 (has links)
In different countries has been a topic widely discussed by historians of education in recent years. Some of these studies have been carried out using the international comparative framework. In this framework the Spanish case should be require a previous study that puts the background, influences and interpretation of the historical context in the country's education. This investigation tackles this study and considers sources and agents involved in the process of reception and interpretation. The historical record of the reception, dissemination and consolidation of specific elements of material culture provide in themselves an X-ray of the introduction of educational reforms in a country

Extracting Cultural Information from Ship Timber

Creasman, Pearce 2010 December 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is rooted in one general question: what can the wood from ships reveal about the people and cultures who built them? Shipwrecks are only the last chapter of a complex story, and while the last fifty years of nautical archaeology have managed to rewrite a number of these chapters, much of the information unrelated to a ship’s final voyage remains a mystery. However, portions of that mystery can be exposed by an examination of the timbers. An approach for the cultural investigation of ship timbers is presented and attempts are made to establish the most reliable information possible from the largely unheralded treasures of underwater excavations: timbers. By introducing the written record, iconographic record, and the social, economic, and political factors to the archaeological record a more complete analysis of the cultural implications of ship and boat timbers is possible. I test the effectiveness of the approach in three varied casestudies to demonstrate its limits and usefulness: ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom, the Mediterranean under Athenian influence, and Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula during the Discoveries. The results of these studies demonstrate how ship timbers can be studied in order to better understand the people who built the vessels.
