Flouting the maxims in scripted speech : An analysis of flouting the maxims of conversation in the television series Firefly / Brott mot maximer i manusförfattade samtal : En analys av brott mot konversationsmaximerna i TV-serien FireflySzczepanski, Peter January 2015 (has links)
Although conversations in television shows are supposed to mimic and represent everyday natural speech, they are written for a specific purpose. The aim of this paper is to find out what maxims are flouted the most in the television series Firefly and analyse what the effects of these flouts are. Presented here is an analysis of how scripted conversation in the aforementioned television show is constructed. By applying Grice's cooperative principle and his theories on flouting and implicatures, certain patterns emerge that show recurring uses of flouts for specific effects. The results are based on a study of three episodes of the television series Firefly. The results show that the maxim of quality is flouted the most and that the distribution of flouts between characters is somewhat uneven. This suggests that the use of flouts has to do with the personalities of the different characters.

Coherence in written discourse has been a problematic concept for many
English Language Teachers when teaching to write in English. It is considered as a
crucial part of academic written discourse, which students are expected to master to
be able to pursue their academic studies. This study aims to examine how much the
coherence-related difficulties/problems of Turkish EFL students in writing English
essays are related to writing Turkish essays. The subjects for this study were chosen
from the upper-intermediate level students at the Preparatory Program of Istanbul
Bilgi University. For a detailed understanding of the nature of the coherence-related
difficulties/problems of students&rsquo / Turkish and English essays, this study suggests a
pragmatic analysis, involving the use of Grice&rsquo / s Cooperative Principle and maxims
and sub-maxims of Cooperation.
This study was conducted in the middle of 2005-2006 Academic Year with
the participation of 20 students who were chosen randomly. Each student was asked
to write an essay in English on a given topic from their weekly program. Threeweeks
later, the same students were asked to write essays on the same topic in
Turkish. Thus, 20 English essays and 20 Turkish essays (i.e., Total 40 essays) were
collected as data for this study. The essays were rated for coherence by three
different raters. All English essays were analyzed by one monolingual Americanrater and one bilingual (Turkish and English) rater. Similarly, all Turkish essays
were analyzed by one monolingual Turkish rater and the same bilingual (Turkish
and English) rater. The coherence ratings showed that there is a positive significant
correlation between the coherence judgments of monolingual raters and the
bilingual rater, which means that both monolingual raters and the bilingual rater
agree on the similar coherence judgments. Next, the essays were analyzed in light
of the Gricean Maxims to find the violations of each maxim in each essay by the
researcher. In the comparison of maxim violations and the coherence judgments of
the raters, the maxim of Relation was found to be the most significant maxim that
affected the coherence judgments of the raters both for Turkish and English essays.
In addition, Manner maxim was significant for Turkish essays and Quantity maxim
was significant for English essays. However, in the comparison of the violation of
individual maxims in Turkish and English essays, the violation of Relation maxim
in English essays was found to correlate with the violation of Relation, Quality and
Quantity maxims in Turkish essays. Similarly, violation of Manner maxim in
English essays was also found to correlate with the violation of Quantity and
Relation maxims. On the other hand, the violation of Manner maxim in Turkish
essays was found to correlate with the violation of Quantity maxim in English
essays. In conclusion, by looking at these relationships between Turkish essays and
English essays, it may be argued that students may have inadequacies in writing
skills or may lack some writing skills in Turkish, which may cause inadequacies in
English academic writing skills. However, this study suggests the same study be
replicated in different contexts and with larger sample sizes, similar research studies
be conducted in Turkish writing instruction in the contexts of Turkish Secondary
Education, and further studies be conducted on the effect of Relation and Manner
maxims on other maxims.

Coherence in written discourse is considered to be a complex and a fuzzy concept but it is, at the same time, a crucial feature of any well-written text. The present study aims to contribute to the field of the teaching of the concept of coherence by proposing an approach to analyzing coherence in students&rsquo / essays in the context of the Department of Modern Languages (DML) at Middle East Technical University (METU) and to the teaching of the concept. The study suggests an approach involving Gricean maxims for analyzing coherence in freshman student argumentative essays at DML at METU.
In order to achieve this aim, 50 essays were rated for coherence by two raters and the same essays were analyzed by the researcher for maxim violations. Next, the correlation between the raters&rsquo / judgments and the number of maxim violations in each essay and the correlation between raters&rsquo / judgments and the number of violations for each maxim in each essay was calculated. The findings
revealed a significant negative correlation between the variables and a negative correlation between the violation of Quantity maxim most frequently and the raters&rsquo / judgments. The findings suggest that Gricean maxims can be used as a tool for analyzing coherence in student argumentative essays. The implications of this finding for the analysis of the essays, for the teaching, learning and assessment processes are discussed.

Les Maximes de la Rochefoucauld en anglais : pour une linguistique de l’aphorisme / La Rochefoucauld’s Maxims in English : towards a linguistic study of aphorismsDegoute, Mathias 12 June 2010 (has links)
Cette thèse porte sur les traductions anglaises des Maximes de La Rochefoucauld et explore par ce prisme les propriétés linguistiques, pragmatiques et stylistiques de ces énoncés autonomes que sont les aphorismes. Notre étude compare la maxime à d’autres types d’aphorismes tels que les proverbes, adages, dictons et autres mots d’esprit que l’on trouve aussi dans la littérature anglophone. Une réflexion sur la forme des maximes est menée au travers de deux approches. L’une, contrastive, compare la version originale du livre de La Rochefoucauld à huit de ses versions anglaises. Une analyse des écarts entre formulations françaises et anglaises permet d’éclairer l’existence d’une vision très différente de l’aphorisme entre les deux langues. Ces conceptions de la maxime divergent du point de vue de la rhétorique mais aussi de la réception. L’autre approche est génétique : nous nous penchons sur l’élaboration de l’œuvre au travers d’une étude des variantes des maximes que nous livrent les manuscrits et la correspondance de l’auteur. Nous en tirons la conclusion que l’écriture des maximes est circonscrite par des contraintes énonciatives et grammaticales bien précises, qui confèrent aux énoncés autonomie discursive et statut citationnel. On peut ainsi considérer que La Rochefoucauld s’est attaché à approcher un canon aphoristique dont les proportions et les mesures sont à rattacher à la longue tradition littéraire des formes brèves. Ces considérations font la lumière sur les démarches très variées et parfois surprenantes des traducteurs (versification, narrativisation, proverbialisation…). / This dissertation deals with the English translations of La Rochefoucauld’s Maxims in order to address the question of the linguistic, pragmatic and stylistic properties of the autonomous sentences referred to as aphorisms. My study carries out a comparison of the literary form of the maxim with other types of aphorisms such as proverbs, adages, sayings and sentences associated with the English tradition of wit. The formal features of maxims are analysed through a twofold approach. First, the translations of La Rochefoucauld’s sentences are studied in contrast: eight different English versions of the book are compared with the French original. The differences between both idioms’ wordings of such particular sentences point to very different conceptions of aphorisms as far as their use and structure are concerned. These conceptions differ in terms of rhetoric but also in terms of reception. Secondly, heed is paid to the very elaboration of the Maxims through a study of the book’s numerous variants that survived in the form of manuscripts and letters. The conclusion that is drawn sheds light on enunciative and grammatical constraints that define how maxims are written, giving the latter discursive autonomy and status of quotation. La Rochefoucauld’s work may thus be considered to be an attempt at reaching the perfection of an aphoristic canon, the proportions and features of which are to be linked to the ancient tradition of brevity in literature. These considerations contribute to explain and justify the very diverse, even sometimes surprising approaches of English translators since versified, dramatised or proverbialised versions are attested.

<p>When we converse we constantly fail to observe the rules of conversation in order to simplify and make dialogues more effective. The scriptwriters who work with TV shows use non-observances of maxims in order to evoke different feelings from their viewers. The aim of this paper was to investigate how frequently non-observances of maxims occurred in the TV shows Desperate Housewives and That 70’s Show. I examined where and why they were used as well as how often flouting was used compared to violations. The base of the study was a drama and a comedy show.</p><p>Research has shown that the maxim of relevance is most frequently used to create different comical or dramatic situations. The scriptwriters have their characters ignore what is relevant to the situations in order to make them come off as flustered, odd and stupid in humorous situations and as mysterious, cowardly, respectful or bold in dramatic situations. Also research shows that flouting occurs more frequently than violations when it comes to breaking maxims. Violations occur most often with the maxim of quality when the characters lie to mislead in order to direct blame away from him/herself. In Conclusion, this investigation has shown that non-observances of maxims are important for scriptwriters in order to create humorous and dramatic situations in verbal interaction.</p>

The author analyses the instruments of conversation construction, its structure and factors which determine it. Since the conversation is defined as a linguistic unit, the thesis discusses its structure and elements. Children's talks have been analysed on the basis of Grice's theory of conversational maxims, which allowed to observe the application of particular rules in conversation construction and their disregard or violations. The conversation analysis has also been developed from other perspectives, such as the roles of interlocutors and the mechanisms of their alteration, the expressive variations of the parts of conversations and the relationship between verbal and non-verbal language. Phonetic, lexical, morphological and syntactic discursive elements typical of the children's and youth language have been discussed as well, since they have a considerable impact on the formation of the children's conversation and help to determine the addressee more adequately, express the ideas more acurately, reveal the true status of the speaker and create the desired image.

Sententiae Jesus : gnomic sayings in the tradition of JesusHenderson, Ian Herbert January 1989 (has links)
This dissertation coordinates two problems which have hitherto resisted adequate synthesis: the form-critical problem of describing proverbial-sounding Synoptic sayings and the tradition-historical problem of assessing the rhetorical habits of Jesus and his immediate successors in oral tradition. The approach taken here to linking these qualifies not only form-critical assumptions of continuity between written forms - in Kleinliteratur - and identifies oral Sitze im Leben of mnemotechnical scholasticism, but also of the recent emphases on radical discontinuity between oral and writing modes of tradition. The connection proposed here between re-description of so- called Wisdom-sayings and oral traditional aspects of the gospels is in the Hellen educational category of gnome. Defined, exemplified and prescribed in basic Graeco-Roman educational texts as well as in technical, philosophical manuals of Rhetoric and in a rich collection-literature, gnome is superbly attested as an exercise in primary education, in all kinds of public-speaking and in cross-cultural (including Jewish) tradition. Moreover, Hellenistic cultivation of gnome primarily as a speech-type, indeed as a conversational means of argumentation in any Sitz im Leben, and only secondarily though still extensively as a literary technique makes it a particularly pertinent term of comparison for New Testament criticism. Recognizing gnomic continuity between oral and written Synoptic tradition allows discussion of the authenticity not only of individual sayings (on criteria of dissimilarity), but also collectively of the gnomic manner (on criteria of oral-literate continuity and multiple attestation): quite apart from the (in)authenticity of each gnome, gnomic style is central to Jesus' self-expression and earliest tradition. In this sense gnomai are a particularly valuable data-set for reassessing the critically controverted relationship between Jesus' rhetoric and law: in Synoptic tradition gnome is exploited suggestively as a non-legal means of addressing conventionally legal topics.

Terror and Evil in Iraq : A Study of Political DiscourseDekavalla, Georgia January 2009 (has links)
<p>Abstract</p><p>This paper aims to determine the validity of the hypothesis that the effective and eloquent use of language can result in shaping beliefs and altering people’s perception of certain phenomena. In order to explore this hypothesis, a speech given by George W. Bush concerning the Iraq war is examined, followed by a brief study of two corpora, the Time Magazine Corpus and the Corpus of Contemporary American English, where the collocationpatterns of the words Iraq, evil and terror are examined. The paper starts by presenting the main concepts upon which this study is based, i.e. mental frames, the co-operative principle and conversational maxims and finally, various rhetoric devices. An analysis section follows, where George Bush’s speech is examined with the help of the concepts mentioned above and the analysis continues with the corpora-study. One of the conclusions drawn in this study is that, indeed, it is possible that language can be successfully used in order to achieve political means, and that there seems to be a shift in the American public’s perception of concepts such as Iraq and terror, visible in the use of language. However, it cannot be said with certainty whether the Bush Administration has managed to dominate public discourse, through a study as minor as this one.</p>
