Act or interact? The perceived influence of social media on millennial prosocial behaviours

Cnattingius, Linda, Wirstad Gustafsson, Ella January 2019 (has links)
With modern communication technology advancements, activist expression has become more common on social media platforms. Especially susceptible to these expressions is the millennial generation, whose lives are greatly permeated by media technology. This thesis aims to explore in what ways the social media platform Facebook inuences millennials’ motivation to engage in substantial prosocial behaviours that are intended to benet other people or society as a whole. Through mixed-method research design, participants’ attitudes towards Facebook as a platform for activism and its inuence on prosocial motivational aspects, was explored. Results indicated that previous habits of supportive engagement and the cost of the supportive action inuenced how the likeliness and motivation to engage in substantial supportive actions was aected by Facebook interaction. More precisely, higher levels of previous engagement, as well as engagement in costly, prosocial actions contributed to an increased motivation to engage further in such actions. Furthermore, social and contemporary aspects showed to play a large part for participants’ motivation to engage in costly and substantial prosocial actions.‌ / I samband med dagens kommunikationsteknologiska framsteg har aktivistiska uttryck blivit allt vanligare på plattformar för sociala medier.

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS AT A SWEDISH HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION : The case of Malmö University

Ruzsbánszki, Nándor January 2022 (has links)
Education plays an essential role in people’s lives, throughout history institutions have been made for the better development of knowledge to the society. Contemporary challenges like, digital revolution, demographic changes, and data economy navigates civilization to the so-called knowledge society (Smidt, 2010). The whole Higher Education sector is affected by the contemporary challenges (Maric, 2013). There is an ever-growing need for Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the knowledge society. But, Higher Education Institutions are now even more at crossroads between their traditional views of education's intrinsic value and the increased demands of the knowledge society (Baker & Baldwin, 2015). Therefore, education institutions, especially its leaders, tend to react to this challenge and enhance their potential future by adapting to the changes. The way it can be achieved is by thinking strategically about the organization’s future and creating the “Strategy Document”. What is more, strategy planning is an effective tool to develop higher education institutions’ vision of the future (Sevier, 2003). But, involving members of an educational organization in the creation of a “Strategy Document” is also challenging. Applying digital media technologies in the strategy creation process offers better engaged members in strategies. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how a higher education institution plans its strategy, to understand the challenges presented to the community and the role media technology plays in the planning process. Furthermore, this thesis has sought to explore a way to enhance organization wide participation in the planning process. By adopting the inductive approach driven action-oriented research methodology and building on the theory of interpretation, the thesis has attempted to examine how Malmö University organizes its strategy planning process together with how stakeholders of Malmö University could be part of the strategy planning. According to the findings, the strategy planning process was conducted at Malmö University without involving all interested members of the institution, but involving some uncertainties. For example, there was no methodology applied for planning the process, the deadlines originated from the final announcement of the publication of the strategy, therefore it is hard to track and develop the process in the future. And the role of students was questionable, as they were represented by the president of the student union, but the strategy creation group was not thinking with the students' mind. A prototype of a future-oriented workshop for people without a strategic thinking background has been tested in this thesis to support participation for all members of Malmö University in the strategy planning process. It indicates specific questions, topics and discussions to support participants to enhance their everyday thinking and be able to ideate on a more abstract level to phrase strategical ideas and overcome their barriers with the abstractness of strategic thinking. The results show that Malmö University based its strategy planning process on a 10-20 members sized strategy planning group’s effort, rather than collected information about its stakeholders views. Media technology was used to enhance institution wide participation as it mediated discussions through different employees, but not all stakeholder groups were invited (e.g. students were not).

En analog spelare i en digital värld? : En studie om användningen av digitala verktyg på Södertörns högskola / An anlog player in a digital world? : A study on the use of digital tools at Södertörn University

Erenrot Blücher, Nathalie, Danieli, Ann January 2014 (has links)
This study aims to ascertain how teachers use digital tools for educational purposes, seen from a didactic and multimodal perspective. It also aims to investigate students attitudes towards the digital technology used in their education. The study takes place at Södertörn University College. It has been conducted through observations, questionnaires and interviews with both teachers and students. The results of the observations yielded consistent with the results from the interviews and questionnaires. The study shows that teachers at the college sparingly use digital tools. Lectures with PowerPoint presentations containing merely text and images were by far the most common teaching tool. Teachers generally have a positive attitude towards digital tools, but due to time constraints and limitations in how and what digital inputs that may be used in teaching, they are limited in their choice of tools. The students also welcome the digital tools and want greater access to the range of media aids in their training, and would like to see it more frequently used in their education.

Superlokalt i Strömsund : En studie av hyperlokala medier från ett medietekniskt perspektiv / Super locally in Strömsund : A study of hyperlocal media from a technological perspective

Nyberg, Robin, Nordin, Tor January 2016 (has links)
This study originated in a discussion regarding an information vacuum in the Swedish countryside. The phenomenon hyperlocal media has been recognized to fill information gaps in the local community. The study examines through seven interviews how hyperlocal media channels are being used by media companies in rural areas. Results show that the media companies are unsure of how to react to a changing media climate where the conditions for the dissemination of information has changed. Hyperlocal media channels are used but the linguistic definition is still unknown for the media companies. It is above all new media companies who embraced the potential of hyperlocal media channels, although social platforms like Facebook have become an effective hyperlocal information and publishing channel for all media companies.

A study about the key factors affecting users to accept Chunghwa Telecom's Multimedia on Demand

Huang, Ling-Yi 08 February 2006 (has links)
With the development of the broadband and the digital technology, different medium could integrate and converge together and the boundaries become dimmer and dimmer. For example, Chunghwa Telecom¡¦s (CHT) Multimedia On Demand service crossed the boundary and entered the digital visual industry in March, 2004. CHT¡¦s MOD is based on the television and through ADSL to offer the digital interactive TV service, making broadband from the study to the living room. Above the service platform, it could not only transmit the visual message, but also the voice and data messages. This kind of business model will be the operational target of the broadband suppliers in the future. However, there are some problems on the promotional pace of CHT¡¦s MOD mow. Based on the results of the earlier researches, the reason why the interactive visual service could not promote successfully is the government and companies put too much emphases on the technical infrastructure, but they all neglect the market situation and the customers¡¦ usages. But, in order to popularize one kind of new media technology, understanding the conditions of the target audiences accurately is the most important mission. Therefore, this research will take CHT¡¦s MOD as an example to understand the key factors which will influence the target audiences to accept the new media technology. And we will see the viewpoints of users. This research will take the Technology Acceptance Model as the main framework and combine the innovation characteristics, such as the compatibility, Trialability and observability. Moreover, we also take subject norm, network externality and new media technology self ¡Vefficacy into account. Through our survey and analysis, we could also prove the originate TAM again and our extended model is more explicative than the originated one. As TAM says, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use will influence the behavioral intention to use directly. And perceived usefulness is the most powerful variable in the model. Other variables will influence the perceived usefulness or perceived ease of use. For instance, subjective norm and network externality have the positive and remarkable effect on perceived usefulness. And new media technology self ¡Vefficacy has the direct effects on the perceived ease of use. On the other hand, among the innovation characteristics, the compatibility and observability have the direct effects on the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, but trialability doesn¡¦t. That says, the more compatibility and observability are, the stronger perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are. From the outcome of this research, we could understand the key factors of affecting the behavioral intention to accept CHT¡¦s MOD. And it could be the reference for the operators. Furthermore, all variables included in this research will affect the behavioral intention intensely. When we talk about such kind of information system with entertainments, the motivational variables could be considered.

Pakistani Immigrant Parental Perspectives on New Media Literacies

Yusuf, Hinna 29 November 2012 (has links)
This phenomenological study researches Pakistani immigrant parents’ perspectives and attitudes on how their children use new media technologies. Parental attitudes are directly linked to student achievement (Hampton, Mumford & Bond, 1998) and parents are the gatekeepers of technology use in the home, where, during unstructured time, children can experiment and develop skills in using new technologies (Ito et al, 2010). Therefore, this study looks at how parents, through their actions and attitudes, encourage or discourage their children from developing competencies in using new media technologies By examining the pedagogical histories of parents and their concerns and rules about technology use, this study adds to the literature on parental attitudes towards the use of technology as a pedagogical tool. Further, this study examines the issue from an immigrant perspective, focusing on 10 Pakistani immigrant parents who live in the Greater Toronto Area and whose children attend pubic school.

Medieteknik och historieundervisning : diskurser om teknik i klassrummet under 1980-talet och åren kring 2010 / Media Technology and History Education : Discourses of Classroom Technology during the 1980s and the years around 2010

Westerberg, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
The present study analyzes attitudes made manifest when media technology is used in teaching at Swedish upper secondary schools. It examines discourses related to the subject of history by comparing contemporary circumstances with those of the mid-1980s, making research in both educational history and history education indispensible to its execution. The study considers the impact of technology on human interaction as an essentially social construction. Furthermore, it addresses questions about the role media technology plays in current discourses, about the actors that are manifested in these discourses and about their didactic implications. Since the investigation focuses on discourse, it is an interpretive work. Analytical tools have been borrowed from the field of discourse theory to facilitate a broad understanding of discourse and communication. The analysis is conducted in order to reconstruct chains of analogy and nodal points of communication in media technology and teaching, with specific attention paid to matters related to the subject of history. Secondary school policy documents, curricula relevant to each period, teacher´s periodicals and interviews with history teachers are combined to reconstruct discourses on technology in education. Interviews were conducted with six history teachers, three of whom taught in the 1980s, while the remainder began teaching in the past fifteen years. The periodicals studied are Lärarnas tiding and Skolvärlden, including every issue published in the years 1983, 1985, 1987, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Four discourses on media technology in education have been reconstructed from this material. Two of the discourses are relevant to the mid-eighties, and have been called the discourse on the school of the future and the discourse on film, junk culture and education, respectively. The discourses reconstructed from the years around 2010 are named the discourse on the contemporary school and the discourse on good teaching. These discourses generally nurture an optimistic belief in what media technology can mean to school and teaching. The reasons for using technology in the classroom are based on notions of what is required from society or what is relevant to the students. The roles of media technology in education are affected by several groups of actors, including government officials, marketers, school leadership and teachers. The process was however never significantly affected by formal policy. One aspect central to a positive view of media technology in education was that it would improve the quality of teaching, especially in the case of history, characterized by storytelling and lecturing. Certain didactic considerations became visible in the study of these discourses, which risked being shallow and trend sensitive, insofar as it might be difficult for teachers to find suitable forums for peer-to-peer subject specific reflections on media technology.
