Who are you calling obruni? A case study of African American Immigration to Ghana

Davis III, Ephious January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigated the migration experiences and subjectivity of belonging of Members of the African American Association of Ghana (AAAG) in obtaining permanent status in Ghana. An estimated three thousand African Americans are living in Ghana (Brown, 2013). Fieldwork was conducted primarily in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana with sixteen Research Participants, including members of AAAG and the African American community at large. Life history interviews were conducted utilizing a twenty-one question instrument that guided the data collection. Participant observation and autoethnography was unique to this study as the Researcher himself; an African American, spent two years living in Ghana prior to submitting this thesis. This thesis offers new data and experiences to the ideas surrounding a “return” migration of the descendants of victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Ghana. Attention was given to the experiences of African Americans being referred to by Ghanaians as obruni, which effectively means “white man and/or foreigner” and what impact, if any, it had on my Research Participants. Necessarily, issues of identity, nationhood, race as well as religion/spirituality was explored with this thesis. Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural capital theory was utilized in looking at the interconnections of cultural capital between my Research Participants and what he describes as the embodied state, objectified state and the institutionalized state (Bourdieu, 1986). The results of this thesis are that the experiences of the Research Participants varied regarding the pursuit of permanent status in Ghana. Moreover, the use of the word obruni had various levels of interpretation and use that were expressed.

The migration experiences of non-English speaking background children

Suominen, Keiju, n/a January 1993 (has links)
This study examines the migration experiences of non-English speaking background children. The research was conducted at the Southside Primary Introductory English Centre in the A.C.T. An ethnographic approach was employed enabling the researcher to participate in the setting in order to develop an in depth understanding of the children's experiences. The data was collected using observation and key informant interviewing. The participants were encouraged to freely reflect on their past and present experiences to enable them to make a comparative analysis of their experiences in Australia and in their country of origin. The data has been faithfully recorded to represent the children's point of view. The data was then organised into taxonomies. These were used as a basis for the analysis of the data in relation to the pertinent literature. The three major categories examined were culture, interaction and feelings. This analysis has been used to draw implications for the education of migrant children in the A.C.T.

Saint Louis, Jessie Marie Michèle 06 1900 (has links)
Thousands of Haitian citizens have settled in Quebec after the occurrence of the earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. Many of them have been sponsored in Quebec by their families. Immigration to Canada from Haiti began during the late 1950s focusing more particularly in Montreal. The political, social and economic context in Haiti is often cited in the literature to explain the departure of Haitians and their installation in Quebec where the 'Haitian community' is estimated at about 120,000 people. We conducted an exploratory qualitative research to better understand the situation of Haitian newcomers established in Montreal following the earthquake. To do this, we inspired by notions of experience (Dubet, 1994) and representation (Hall, 1997). Between November 2012 and January 2013, we carried out nine interviews with seven women and two men aged from 23 to 60 years. The results suggest that participants place great importance to life in the country of origin prior to migration in the development of their experiences. Experience current "here" is developed in comparison to experience past 'out there '. Participants also emphasized the importance of the family network when the migration process, both in the processes of emigration and in the accompaniment to the host country. Painful emotions were expressed against the separation family, lived as one of the consequences of the migration. Participants began efforts to integrate employment but they were faced with difficulties that most of them describe as "structural" and that some "personal". Finally, the results indicate that participants are carriers of an imaginary migration which is expressed by aspirations and expectations compared to the host society and which reflects a tension between these aspirations and experiences.

Byström, Tinny January 2023 (has links)
The Swedish school system holds many misconceptions about gifted students. For example, they are often expected to perform well and succeed in school without any support measures or additional adjustments. But previous research has shown that, on the contrary, they often experience difficulties at school. Students with migration experiences, on the other hand, run the risk of meeting too low expectations in school, which means that they are not challenged and stimulated enough to achieve school success. Based on this, the main purpose of this literature study has been to create a systematic overview of existing research regarding gifted students with migration experiences. The starting point has been to investigate how giftedness can be discovered and identified in these students, as well as to examine more closely the difficulties that exist for gifted students with migration background to achieve school success. Using qualitative content analysis as a method, results from ten articles have been compiled through thematic synthesis. Searches have been made within two databases, SwePub and APA PsycInfo, based on selected exclusion and inclusion criteria. In the results, several factors were identified as obstacles to achieving school success, partly factors in the child's growing up environment such as low socio-economic status and low level of education of the parents, and partly psychosocial factors. Low expectations from the environment, lack of self-regulation and low social skills to name a few. The results also showed that identifying giftedness is a very complex endeavor and that there is a lack of established working methods for this. The school's organization and management have, however, proven to be important in order for gifted students with migration experiences to be discovered, but major shortcomings in the Swedish education system have been noticed as well as extensive needs for competence development at all levels.

“The right thing to do” : COVID-19 emergency work as a migration experience for the international health care students of Hungary

Phillips, Ágnes Adél January 2021 (has links)
The case study of this thesis is the analysis of international health care students joined the emergency call of local authorities and performed emergency work during COVID-19 to help the Hungarian health care teams and facilities manage the pandemic. Through this case, the thesis puts an existing student interaction typology (Rose-Redwood and Rose-Redwood, 2013) to the test, and sets out to answer how the COVID-19-induced changes in their typology affected the students’ experience of being a migrant in Hungary. With semi-structured interviews and an inductive approach, the thesis identifies three recurring feelings – isolation, gratitude and responsibility – and the core argument of the thesis is that the feelings and migration experiences that the student shared were connected to the disruption of the student interaction typology. This study informs our understanding of student mobility and helps further research account for atypical situations in student mobility research.
