Evaluating Integrated Weed Management: Russian Knapweed Control With Goat Grazing and AminopyralidAlder, Clarke G. 01 May 2013 (has links)
Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens) is an invasive perennial forb that has become well established in much of the western United States and Canada since the late 1800s. Aminopyralid is a relatively new pyridine carboxylic acid herbicide registered for use on rangelands and has provided excellent control of Russian knapweed in many studies. Research trials were conducted on two adjacent plot sites at Dinosaur National Monument to evaluate the effects of a single spring goat grazing paired with a fall application of aminopyralid at 0, 53, 70, 88, and 105 g ae ha-1 on Russian knapweed control. Russian knapweed density, canopy cover, and biomass were reduced to 0 or near 0 by all rates of aminopyralid, regardless of grazing treatment. Conversely, desirable grass cover and biomass increased at all rates of aminopyralid regardless of grazing treatment. Aminopyralid provided excellent control of Russian knapweed at all rates tested. Desirable perennial grass species have the potential to be injured when growth regulator herbicides are used for broadleaf weed control. Greenhouse trials performed at Utah State University and field trials performed in Logan, UT from 2009&ndash2011 evaluated tolerance and response of six native perennial bunchgrasses to growth regulator herbicides. Grasses used in the study included tall wheatgrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, Great Basin wildrye, Indian ricegrass, big bluegrass, and bottlebrush squirreltail. Two rates each of aminopyralid, aminocyclopyrachlor, and clopyralid were evaluated. Herbicide test rates were based on the labeled rate for control of Russian knapweed and other creeping perennials. Tolerance to herbicides varied among grass species. Petri&ndashdish trials showed reductions in root length by all three herbicides in all six speceis 14 days after treatment (DAT). Shoot length was significantly reduced by both rates of aminopyralid (123 and 246 g ae ha-1) and 280 g ai ha-1 of amincyclopyrachlor. The same species were evaluated in the field and greenhouse in response to postemergence applications of the same herbicides. Of the six grass species tested, &lsquoSherman&rsquo big bluegrass appeared to be highly tolerant to aminopyralid, clopyralid, and aminocyclopyrachlor, and &lsquoMagnar&rsquo Great Basin wildrye and Anatone bluebunch wheatgrass appeared to be the most sensitive to aminopyralid and aminocyclopoyrachlor in both the field and the greenhouse.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a complex mental health disorder and its etiology can be investigated based on different theoretical prerequisites. The present thesis examines schizophrenia from the neurodevelopmental and psychosis continuum perspectives. Neurodevelopmental theories of schizophrenia see abnormalities in the developing nervous system as early predictors of vulnerability to the disease. Schizophrenia can be seen also as a progressive disorder and a continuum of symptomatology from personality traits (schizotypy) to full-blown schizophrenia. The aim of the present thesis is to study incidence of schizophrenia; prevalence of schizotypy; and associations between schizophrenia and schizotypy with early motor developmental milestones. The research design includes prospective cohort studies and systematic review, and meta-analysis.
In two successive Northern Finland Birth Cohorts (NFBC) studies, 20 years apart (1966 and 1986), the incidence of schizophrenia remained the same, but the incidence of other psychoses and therefore all psychoses was higher in NFBC 1986. In NFBC 1966, mean schizotypy scores were among the lowest and the highest scores among 24 general population studies.
When early motor developmental milestones were investigated in the meta-analyses (3 to 5 studies), a significant small effect size for walking, sitting, and standing unsupported was found with respect to adult schizophrenia. When schizotypy outcome was studied in the NFBC 1966, later achievement of turning from back to tummy, touching thumb with index finger, standing up, sitting unsupported, and walking with support were found to be associated with an increase in schizotypy scales and varied somewhat by gender.
To conclude, there have been changes in the incidence of all psychoses but not in schizophrenia between the two NFBCs. This is in line with other studies on the trends of incidence of psychoses, which highlights the role of changes in diagnostic systems and practices that can influence rates. In this project, mean schizotypy scores were both among the highest and the lowest estimates in the studies on schizotypy in the general population. Early motor developmental milestones were both predictors of schizophrenia and schizotypy, and thus this finding supports both the neurodevelopmental and psychosis continuum approaches to the aetiology of schizophrenia. / Tiivistelmä
Skitsofrenia on monimuotoinen mielenterveyden häiriö, jonka etiologiaa voidaan tutkia erilaisissa teoreettisissa viitekehyksissä. Tämä väitöskirja tutkii skitsofreniaa neurologisen kehityksen ja psykoosin jatkumon näkökulmista. Skitsofrenian neurokehitykselliset teoriat pitävät kehittyvän keskushermoston poikkeavuuksia varhaisina skitsofrenian alttiuden ennustajina. Skitsofreniaa voidaan pitää myös progressiivisena sairautena ja oireiden jatkumona persoonallisuuden piirteistä (skitsotypaalisuudesta) täysimittaiseen skitsofreniaan. Tämän väitöskirjatutkimuksen tavoitteena on tutkia skitsofrenian ilmaantuvuutta, skitsotypaalisten piirteiden yleisyyttä ja skitsofrenian ja skitsotypaalisten piirteiden yhteyttä varhaiseen motoriseen kehitykseen. Tutkimusasetelmina ovat prospektiiviset syntymäkohortit, systemaattinen katsaus ja meta-analyysi.
Kahdessa peräkkäisessä 20 vuoden välein kerätyssä Pohjois-Suomen syntymäkohortissa (1966 ja 1986) skitsofrenian ilmaantuvuus pysyi samana, mutta muiden psykoosien ja siten kaikkien psykoosien ilmaantuvuudet olivat korkeampia vuoden 1986 syntymäkohortissa. Vuoden 1966 syntymäkohortissa negatiivisen skitsotypaalisuuden piirteet olivat korkeita ja positiivisen skitsotypaalisuuden piirteet alhaisia verrattuna 24 muuhun väestöaineistoon.
Varhaisen motorisen kehityksen ja aikuisiän skitsofrenian välistä yhteyttä tutkittiin meta-analyysin (3–5 tutkimusta) avulla. Tilastollisesti merkitsevä pieni negatiivinen yhteys löytyi aikuisiän skitsofrenian ja kävelemään, istumaan ja seisomaan oppimisen välillä. Pohjois-Suomen vuoden 1966 syntymäkohortissa skitsotypaaliset piirteet liittyivät hitaampaan vatsalleen kääntymisen, peukalo-etusormi otteen, seisomisen, tuetta istumisen ja tuen kanssa kävelemisen oppimiseen. Näissä yhteyksissä oli vaihtelua tutkittavan sukupuolen mukaan.
Yhteenvetona voidaan todeta, että psykoosien ilmaantuvuus on kasvanut Pohjois-Suomen syntymäkohorteissa, mutta skitsofrenian ei. Tämä on linjassa aikaisempien tutkimusten kanssa. On kuitenkin huomioitava myös diagnostisten järjestelmien ja käytäntöjen merkitys näiden muutosten arvioimisessa. Varhainen motorinen kehitys ennusti sekä skitsofreniaa että skitsotypaalisia piirteitä. Havainto tukee sekä neurokehityksellistä että psykoosin jatkumoon liittyvää lähestymistapaa skitsofrenian etiologiassa.

Climate Resilient Development and Disasters : Trend analysis of policy change after milestone events in the period 2000 - 2020Grünfeld, Hannes January 2023 (has links)
There is a debate within the field of policy studies whether disasters are drivers of policy reforms, as encapsulated by the disaster-reform hypothesis. Since the disaster rate for extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change, it is of high relevance to study if these disasters have any effect on climate polices. The aim of this thesis is therefore to empirically explore if there are any discernible global trends of disasters preceding a subsequent increase in Climate resilient development (CRD) policies and to show the variation of “effect lag” between income groups and regions. The research design operationalises the most severe disasters through “milestone events” and creates a CRD index by the arithmetical mean of sustainable development, climate adaptation, and climate mitigation. The results show a proportional share of countries experienced an effect lag of 1-3 years after their milestone events, while a large incidence of HIC and LMIC countries had a lag of 4-6 years. This explorative thesis has provided a research design and results on CRD, previously undescribed, that suggests several pathways for future studies such as interesting samples for case studies and alternative designs to the operationalisation of concepts.

The diploma thesis titled Individualized Czech language teaching methods by MGML represents MultiGradeMultiLevel didactic system, which was developed based on the training needs of poor rural people in Rishi Valley, in India. It is a highly structured system, which uses the heterogeneity of students in class. It is realized in perfectly prepared learning environment and with activities based on the principles of constructivism. The main principles correspond to the theory of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky called Zone of proximal development. The aim of the study is to realize and reflect the teaching of Czech language using the MGML-Methodology and thus use action research to verify the possibility of applying the method in the Czech school environment. The teaching took place in the program Step by Step, because its principles are closest with the MGML-Methodology approach. We conclude that the method can be used as an enriching element in teaching at Czech primary school.
