The impact of motivation on the student's language learning : How diverse motivational tools can stimulate the student's learning process from the perspective of motivation theory

Aljumaily, Zeinab, Fayrooz, Bushra January 2022 (has links)
Research has shown that motivation is of great importance for the individual student's learning process and school results. The purpose of the degree project is to investigate the causes of lack of motivation in students who participate in mother tongue teaching and what teachers can do to stimulate this lack of motivation. In a qualitative study, a number of interviews were conducted. On the one hand, three mother tongue teachers in the subjects Arabic, Dari and Polish were interviewed, and on the other hand students from year 6 to year 9. The interviews asked questions about what perceptions students have about their mother tongue, what teachers can do about lack of motivation and what framework factors effect teachers' attitudes. To learn the mother tongue. The results showed that students lack of motivation was due to various factors, including lack of time, work environment, less inclusion of the mother tongue subject, mother tongue teachers relätionship to teachers in other school subject. The conclusion we reached showed the mother tongue subject's role in the diversity ofh the school community, by strengthening the student's identity and personality, and we found som tips on measures for lack of motivation among students and teachers for the subject's mother tongue.

Lärares val av läromedel i modersmålsundervisningen / Teachers' choice of teaching materials in mother tongue education.

Taha, Mohammad Ali, Yusuf, Abdisalam Hassan January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of our study is to investigate mother tongue teachers' strategies for selecting teaching materials and the motivations underlying these choices in their mother tongue instruction in Somali and Arabic. The study is based on a sociocultural perspective and a framework that emphasizes that students learn in interaction with others, using physical and intellectual linguistic tools as well as teaching materials. This study employed a qualitative research method, conducting ten interviews with mother tongue teachers from three different municipalities. Nine of the interviews were conducted in person, while the tenth was carried out via Zoom. The empirical results of the study are presented based on the teachers' experiences with the selection of teaching materials and analyzed from various theoretical perspectives. The results have shown that students' language proficiency and learning needs are of utmost importance when mother tongue teachers choose teaching materials. The results have also indicated that teachers strive to find teaching materials that align with the Swedish National Agency for Education's curriculum, even though it is impossible to find materials that cover all aspects of the central content in the subject of mother tongue. Furthermore, the results have shown that accessibility and economics are two crucial factors influencing schools' procurement of teaching materials.

January 2018 (has links)
No blog... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The technological advances observed in contemporaneity modified the ways of interaction, production, configuration and interpretation of utterances. These modifications reach different activity fields, like the didactic-pedagogical, which has boundaries beyond the physical school space. In this scenario, this research focuses on "new" modalities of teaching/learning practiced on the internet, in which are present discourse genres that are uncommon in the didactic-pedagogical sphere. The selected corpus are didactical posts from the vestibular preparation course Descomplica. The analysis is centered on the presence of humor generating genres, especially the meme, in these teaching/learning practices. It is of our interest the presence of humor as a didactical resource in the teaching relations and possible modifications of this presence when we think about the history of the relations in teaching/learning environments. In this context, other discussions were raised, like the own understanding of meme as a discourse genre; the discursive memory of school space, student and teacher; and the "use" of discourse genres in mother tongue teaching. What could be perceived, through the analysis, is that available resources, and their respective ways of presentation, dialogue with what we had, in the last few decades, in the face-to-face vestibular preparation courses in Brazil: teachers who use jokes and other humor resources in their discourse. In the blog, this humor discourse takes ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

This research has as aims to identify the importance given to the rewriting process as reflexive activity in representations of teachers participate in the continuing education project by training together for the development of the educational process of reading and writing textual production in Elementary Education. This project is coordinated by Ana Maria Mattos Guimarães and Dorotea Frank Kerschof PPGLA/Unisinos Observatory Program of Education / CAPES, and considers the rewriting process very important in language learning. As qualitative research interpretative brings reflections about textual rewriting practice in classroom, in the context of construction of the Gender Didatic Project (PDG), in which four teachers were interviewed before and/or after the implementation of these projects. During these interviews a corpus formed to interpret the representations of infrastructure textual sequences through discourse (Sociodiscursive Interactionism Bronckart, 2009). These forms of textual rolling had a relation to rewriting. The results show that rewriting still lacks reflections by teachers for incorporating teaching practice more efficiently. This research is related to the teaching of the mother tongue and has the capacity to promote language education in students.

Projetos de letramento : ação e formação de professores de lingua materna / Literacy projects : action and formation of mother tongue teachers

Tinoco, Glicia M. Azevedo de M. 12 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Angela B. Kleiman / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-12T14:16:58Z (GMT). / Abstract: This is an action research of ethnographic base which is inserted in the field of Applied Linguistics and, specifically, in the area of formation of mother tongue teachers. It focuses on the literacy projects, understood as a didactical model which articulates the studies of literacy, pedagogy projects and critic pedagogy methodological approach. Its general aim is to infer resignification principles from the writing teaching. Considering the situated action and formation perspective assumed in this research, the specific objectives are: a) to delineate the literacy practices of the students graduating in Letras (PROBÁSICA/UFRN), from Nova Cruz city, in their different spheres of activity; b) to map the database to which they have access; c) to analyze the literacy projects as didactic model; to comprehend how literacy projects development contribute to the formation of the teacher and to the resignification of the mother tongue writing modality teaching. To follow the dialectical process between action and teaching formation, it was used the strategy of correlating the objectives of an academic subject (Estágio Supervisionado I) to a contest which focuses actions among teachers, students and members of the community around the school to the recognition and valorization of the local culture patrimony (Concursos Nacional Tesouros do Brasil). The analysis of the didactical devices which parameterizes the events of each project allows the verification a structural principle - the social practice - and four categories which constitute that principle: the interactivity and the dialogicity; the social situation and its pluralities; the social agency; the cultural plurality. Based on those vertices, the literacy projects are presented as an interesting model to the formation of the teacher who aims at the extending the literacy processes. The indication of that model requires, however, a higher investment in dialogue between the action accomplished in schools of basic education, the students and teachers interest and the academic reflection, so that all together can overcome the challenges which arise during the complex mother tongue teaching and learning process.

Olga, Voropai January 2021 (has links)
In this scientific essay I am describing and analysing the digital challenges in the classroom which lead to situations where the students take the role of a teacher leading to a situation which may challenge the teacher's authority. By implementing theories about teaching and practical knowledge I am evaluating the meaning of the teachers role in the nowadays more digital classroom from the perspective of a mothers tongue teacher, doing so by  evaluating my own experiences and through interviews with other teachers and reflections of existing research literature. The method in this study is essay-writing and my own reflection about the situation of new working conditions that I describe in my story that takes place in an ongoing pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to new working methods including the inevitable usage of digital tools. In the reflection part I am studying the materials from the semi structured interviews with my colleagues where the teachers get to describe their own experiences and fears towards the increasing digitalization in their classrooms. The results have shown that the technical and digital challenges have had an ambivalent impact on teachers during the pandemic. It appears that digital tools are a support for their teaching and learning but can be used in different ways during lessons. Today all the teachers are using digital tools in the classroom, some more than others. The informants have confirmed my hypothesis that digitalizatilization affects the teachers status and authority. But the question if digitalisation increases or decreases the authority of a teacher can still be debated. Based on the decisions that we make, our authority is being affected - this sentence is a part of the conclusions in my study. The method of trial and error when approaching different bumps on the road allows us to find ways to approach those obstacles by implementing practical knowledge that appears with professional practice. With experience as a base one can experiment as well as question the used methods and therefore find new solutions to new challenges.

Louw, Cecilia Jacomina 06 May 2004 (has links)
The pass rate in mathematics is unsatisfactory both in South Africa and internationally. Historically disadvantaged students tend to underachieve even more due to a variety of hampering factors. An investigation into the reasons for underachievement in mathematics prompted the researcher to launch a study through which she wanted to remediate some of these identified problems. The research project took place at Technikon Northern Gauteng (TNG), and comprised of the implementation of tutorial sessions. The study was conducted by means of a quasi-experimental design using action research. The primary goal of this dissertation is to report on the process, outcomes and recommendations in order to facilitate improvement in practice. The researcher's overarching hypothesis was that tutorials in mathematics would have a positive effect on the achievement of first year mathematics students at TNG. The following questions were focussed on during the course of the study: ¨ What is the impact of mathematics tutorials on problem-solving abilities and critical thinking? ¨ What is the impact of tutorials on the self-image of the students, with reference to mathematics and mathematics achievement? ¨ What is the impact of tutorials on mathematics achievement? ¨ Which role could tutors play in the creation of role models? ¨ Do students have the need to communicate mathematically in their mother tongue? ¨ How successfully could portfolio assessment be implemented? Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through a standardised questionnaire, the SOM, a specifically designed, structured questionnaire, observations, focus group interviews, reflective diaries and student records. Some of the findings include: ¨ Historically disadvantaged students § often possess a unsatisfactory study orientation; § apply inefficient time management; § suffer from mathematics anxiety; § do not show a correlation in terms of grade 12 symbols and success at tertiary level § often experience milieu deficit; § do not achieve according to their expectations; and § do not have a learning culture (COLT) at their disposal. ¨ Students generally perceived the tutorials as positive and contributing towards success. The students § did not often speak in their mother tongues; § appreciated the relaxed work tempo; and § utilise the support system of the smaller group. ¨ During the focus group interviews students recognised the following success factors: § regular class attendance; § completion of homework § planning and revision according to a study timetable. ¨ Students shared some personal experiences with the researcher, namely that § the tutorials boosted their self-image and make them willing to ask questions during lectures; § some tutors acted as positive role models; and § the consistent involvement of the lecturer motivated students. The statistical procedures revealed that the students in the experimental group did not perform significantly better than those in the control group, yet that does not diminish the value of the study in any way. The researcher recommends further research in the tertiary mathematics environment in order to empower students. / Dissertation (MEd (Curriculum Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted
