Cotton Mathers's Wonders of the Invisible World: An Authoritative Edition

ABSTRACT Although Cotton Mather, as the official chronicler of the 1692 Salem witch trials, is infamously associated with those events, and excerpts from his apologia on Salem, Wonders of the Invisible World, are widely anthologized today, no annotated critical edition of the entire work has appeared in print since the nineteenth century. This present edition of Wonders seeks to remedy this lacuna in modern scholarship. In Wonders, Mather applies both his views on witchcraft and on millennialism to events at Salem. This edition to Mather's Wonders presents this seventeenth-century text beside an integrated theory of the initial causes of the Salem witch panic. The juxtaposition of the probable natural causes of Salem's bewitchment with Mather's implausible explanations exposes the disingenuousness of his writing about Salem. My theory of what happened at Salem includes the probability that a group of conspirators led by the Rev. Samuel Parris deliberately orchestrated the "witchcraft" and that a plant, the thorn apple, used in Algonquian initiation rites, caused the initial symptoms of bewitchment (39-189). Furthermore, key spectral evidence used at the Salem witch trials and recorded by Mather in Wonders appears to have been generated by intense nightmares, commonly thought at the time to be witch visitations, resulting from what is today termed sleep paralysis (215-310). This dissertation provides a detailed look at some of the testimony given in the Salem court records and in Wonders of the Invisible World as it relates to the interpretation in folklore of the phenomenology of nightmares associated with sleep paralysis. The third chapter of this dissertation focuses extensively on Mather's text as a disingenuous response to the Salem witch trials (320-456). The final section of chapter three posits a "Scythian" or Eurasian connection between Swedish and Salem witchcraft. Similarities in shamanic practices among respective indigenous populations of Lapland, Eurasia, Asia, and New England, caused the devil's involvement in both the visible and invisible worlds to appear more than theoretical to writers like Jose Acosta, Johannes Scheffer, Nicholas Fuller, Joseph Mede, Anthony Horneck, and Cotton Mather, inducing Mather to include a lengthy abstract of the Swedish account in Wonders (404-449).

Since Native American Literature has been established, Native American authors have discussed the influence of the western world on Native traditions and Native identity within their work. Christianity is one of those elements of western cultural influences that shaped remarkably the change of Native traditions under the influence of colonialism. In this dissertation it will be discussed how the influence of Christianity is being written into the novels by Native American writers and which functions are attributed to Christianity in respect to the enforcement of colonial interests and in respect to changes within Native traditions. For this dissertation four authors (D'Arcy McNickle, Paula Gunn Allen, N. Scott Momaday, Louise Erdrich) were chosen whose pieces of work mark a difference in approach. Their novels testify to the contradictory fusion of colonial and missionary goals on the one side and to the possible enrichment of Native customs on the other side. The novels can, therefore, be characterized as an assemble that reaches from total rejection of anything that is assumed to be Christian to an affirmative way of incorporating selective aspects of Christianity to the final denial that there is an evaluation of this historical issue possible. In respect to the method applied, all pieces of literary work are discussed in their usage of Christian literary elements and intertextual references to the Bible and other Christian literary sources. An afterword refers to novels and short stories by further 17 Native American authors who are concerned with the Christian influence on Native traditions in their work as well. The results of the research in the dissertation will then be extended by discussing those pieces of fictional work. / Seit der Etablierung des indianischen Romans im Kanon der amerikanischen Gegenwartsliteratur suchen indianische Schriftsteller nach Wegen, die doppelte Prägung der modernen indianischen Identität durch traditionelle Werte einerseits und westlichen Einfluss andererseits fiktional aufzuarbeiten. Ein Element der westlichen Welt, das die Veränderungen der indianischen Kulturen unter der Einwirkung der Kolonisation maßgeblich mitbestimmt hat, ist die christliche Religion. In der Dissertation wird untersucht, wie das Wirken des Christentums auf das indigene Selbstbild in der US-amerikanischen indianischen Romanliteratur thematisiert wird und welche Funktionen ihm für die Durchsetzung kolonialer Interessen und für den Wandel der indianischen Traditionen im Verlauf der letzten 500 Jahre zuerkannt werden. Cette thèse porte sur les représentations de l’Indien présentées dans les Salons parisiens et dans les sections des Beaux-Arts des Expositions universelles françaises. Elle débute avec la première apparition du thème au Salon, en 1781, et s’achève à sa disparition progressive, au commencement de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Le corpus rassemble des œuvres hétérogènes dont l’étude s’articule autour de trois grandes campagnes de représentation marquées par l’histoire des relations entre les Blancs et les Amérindiens. L’iconographie amérindienne dévoile une figure à la fois attractive et répulsive ; à l’esthétique de la disparition du «bon sauvage» répondent des mises en scène dégradantes. Notre étude rend ainsi compte des sources des imaginaires collectifs et des stéréotypes raciaux assignés à la représentation de l’Indien. Mais l’iconographie amérindienne survient également des impressions d’artistes ayant été à la rencontre de leur sujet. Pour ce groupe de quelques Français et Américains, la question de la représentation de l’«Autre» ne se joue pas exclusivement à travers les schèmes esthétiques abordés auparavant. Les déplacements répétés sur le continent nord-américain et l’attention portée à l’art amérindien favorisent un élargissement des horizons artistiques. Cette thèse est enfin l’occasion d’étudier l’image de l’«Autre» dans le cadre compétitif des Expositions universelles, où la figure de l’Indien tergiverse entre recherche de vraisemblance et sujet d’art. Il en ressort la constitution d’un discours visant à encourager la construction d’une identité esthétique nationale américaine au contact de l’art français. / This Ph. D. dissertation investigates images of Native Americans displayed at the Paris Salons and in the Fine Art sections of the Great Exhibitions of 1855, 1868, 1878, 1889 and 1900. My analysis starts with the first outbreak of the theme at the 1781 Salon and ends following its gradual dismissal at the beginning of the First World War. The body of artworks I analyze documents three main campaigns of representation marked by the history of Native Americans and Whites relations. These representations reveal an artistic figure both attractive and repulsive at the same time. The rhetoric of the disappearance of the “Noble Indian” alternates with degrading images of the “Savage Indians”. Our study reveals the origins of collective imagination and racial stereotypes that originate representations of “Indians”. But this iconography is also based on artists’ itinerancies and their migration to the West in order to meet their models. The artistic production of this small group of French and American artists can not be reduced exclusively to the two aesthetic patterns previously discussed. Their travels on the North American territory and their attention to Native American Art encourage new artistic horizons at the Paris venues. This thesis is also an opportunity to study the image of the Native American “Others” displayed in the competitive Fine Art sections of the Great Exhibitions. It brings out a discourse promoting the figure of the “Indian” to build an American art with its own aesthetic in response to French artistic influences.

This work is an archaeological biography of three skeletons brought to Sweden from Tierra del Fuego in the late 1800s by scientist Otto Nordenskjöld and his Swedish expedition to the Magellan countries. These belonged to Selknam men killed by European farmers. In Sweden they were used in studies of comparative anatomy and as teaching and research material. They reflect the European colonial worldview of the 19th- and early 20th centuries, as well as a part of the colonial history of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. / Este trabajo es una biografía arqueológica sobre tres esqueletos traídos a Suecia desde Tierra del Fuego a fines de 1800, por el científico Otto Nordenskjöld y su expedición sueca a los países magallánicos. Estos pertenecían a hombres selknam, asesinados por estancieros europeos. En Suecia fueron utilizados en estudios de anatomía comparada y como material de enseñanza e investigación. Son un reflejo de la cosmovisión colonial europea de los siglos XIX y principios del XX, así como una parte de la historia colonial de Patagonia y Tierra del Fuego.

Selected Graduate Programs of Professional Education in the Spanish Southwest, with Curricular Emphases on Blacks, Indians, and Spanish Americans

The purpose of this study was to describe graduate courses and programs of professional education at selected institutions which emphasized the preparation of educators to work with Blacks, Indians, and Spanish American (EISA). Information from a survey of college and university graduate catalogs and the review of literature was used to select three institutions for an in-depth study. The institutions selected for study were East Texas State University (ETSU) at Commerce, the University of Texas at Austin (UT/Austin), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Although only three institutions were selected for in-depth study, there seems to be evidence to support the following conclusions: (1) there seem to be more courses and programs with emphases on preparing educators to work with BISAs when outside funding is available, (2) continuation of courses and programs to prepare educators to work with BISAs seems to be directly influenced by the interest and involvement of individual instructors, (3) the instructors who were the most interested in preparing educators to work with multicultural groups seem to have larger classes, (4) the ethnic background of the instructor also seems to influence the effectiveness of a course, (5) a nonthreatening learning atmosphere seems to influence open discussions of serious cultural issues, and (6) informal interaction of Anglo, Black, and Mexican American educators seems to be an effective and satisfying type of cultural exchange and develooment of a cultural awareness.
