Understanding diversity and interculturalism between Aboriginal peoples and Newcomers in Winnipeg

Gyepi-Garbrah, John Victor 27 January 2011 (has links)
Indigeneity plays a central role in planning for diversity and creating inclusive cities in Canada. In the public domain, racism remains prominent in cities and presents challenges to the realization by urban Aboriginal peoples and Newcomers of their aspirations in urban society. In Winnipeg, an Aboriginal-led organisation has initiated partnerships with Newcomer settlement organisations to bring both groups together to build intercultural relationships. A case study of the United Against Racism/Aboriginal Youth Circle component of Ka Ni Kanichihk (KNK) provides the opportunity to examine the effects of its partnerships on the following matters: promoting cross-cultural understanding and friendships, changing negative perceptions and building confidence among Aboriginal peoples and Newcomers vis-a-vis each other, and help indirectly to facilitate Newcomer integration into neighbourhoods predominantly occupied by Aboriginal peoples in Winnipeg. An analysis of the data gathered on the partnership programs revealed that prior to participating in these programs there were negative preconceptions about one another based on false impressions. The programming has facilitated the sharing of cultures and ideas. This has also helped members of both groups to value their cultural differences and similar history of colonialism where they exist, develop a shared understanding of the racism that confronts Aboriginal peoples and racialized Newcomers, break down stereotypes, and build friendships. This thesis reveals that in the short term, the programs and partnerships of KNK are contributing to better cross-cultural understanding and relations within a multiculturalism framework, and that in the long term they have the potential to contribute to better cross-cultural understanding and relations within an intercultural framework. The cross-cultural networks being developed bode well for the potential of developing instrumental policy and advocacy partnerships in addressing common issues faced by Aboriginals and Newcomers through progressive urban policy in Canadian cities.

The improved approaches and results of Open space technology under the deficit of ideal conditions

Liu, Ming-Chun 26 July 2002 (has links)
Abstract Today everyone have a lot of meetings. The meetings¡¦ efficiency is quite low and group decision-making quality is bad. In foreign, many methods have good effects on it. Open space technology is one of them. But it has some conditions and assumptions which don¡¦t fit our culture and the conditions of our companies. We have to improve Open space technology to draw its effects. We improve it according to our assumptions and principles. We also assist it with some technologies, like Talking stick, circling, and catalytic mechanism. They all have outstanding and stable results. They can help Open space technology to overcome the deficit of ideal conditions. This research¡¦s main point is to introduce and collect the creative ways of the improved Open space technology. In two hospitals, we can see the improved Open space technology which has obvious effects and promote the group decision-making quality a lot. It still can get good results under the deficit of ideal conditions. We conclude that it has 9 traits as followed: 1. It lowers the barrier of inertia. 2. Interactions 3. Positive feedback 4. Participation 5. The form of activity 6. Safety 7. Closer contact with others 8. Appreciative attitude 9. Truly contribution This research is a initial research and introduction of the improved Open space technology. We suggest other researchers can popularize the improved Open space technology and get the more generalization results.

La construction du concept du vivant en sciences et les jeux vidéo de simulation d'animaux virtuels : étude de conceptions des élèves de l'école primaire au Liban et en France / The construction of the concept of living thing in science and video games of simulation of virtual animals : a study of the conceptions of elementary school students in Lebanon and in France

El Jamal, Rayanne 09 November 2018 (has links)
Our research is to understand the effects of video games simulating virtual animals on the concepts of life, especially the distinction between what is alive and what is not. To do this, it is a question of identifying the conceptual differences between the populations of players and non-players in virtual animal simulation video games. First, we did an exploratory survey identifying children's playful video practices. This survey allowed selecting the two most used games by children of this age: Talking TOM and POU. Our study focuses on these two games. A questionnaire has been distributed in Lebanon and France to study how players and non-players in TOM and / or POU design the living. A total of 916 children aged 9 to 12 completed this questionnaire. In Lebanon, 21 interviews with students followed the questionnaire. The questionnaires were statistically analyzed to reveal the differences and similarities between the populations of players and non-players in France and Lebanon. The interviews had been analyzed by a thematic analysis of content followed by a lexical analysis and allowed a qualitative exploitation of the results. The results show that interviews and questionnaires strongly converge on the hypothesis of an influence of games on the construction of the notion of life among players of both countries. Indeed, in Lebanon and France users of TOM and POU have significantly more anthropomorphic, animistic and anthropocentric conceptions than those who do not play it.

Från trassliga kassettband till egna nedladdare : Talboksverksamhet vid folkbibliotek

Olsson, Maja January 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines talking books at public libraries. The thesis focuses on what the digital evolution has cometo mean in terms of Internet-based access to talking books. The survey is based on interviews with library staff and a socio-cultural theoretical perspective. The survey aims to examine the library's talking book function as a phenomenon in which cognitive, physical, communicative and temporal dimensions are considered. The survey demonstrates that the library staff associates talking books with goals concerning everyone's right to access to literature and reading and libraries intermediary role in this regard, which these often tied to broader public librari -es goals concerning the promotion of reading, democracy, accessibility and where the establishment of the service Egen nedladdning is understood from thoughts of greater, easier and more efficient access to talking books for the talking book reader, and as an opportunity for independence for the same. Physical talking books are disussedas a tool that can be used to establish and convey the talking book function in library premises. In terms o finformation dissemination and surrounding activities are made visible not least a network-based method and spontaneous meetings. Egen nedladdning and the app Legimus imparts opportunities for those expressing interestin the face of these, but older talking book readers can communicate a smaller interest in the use of these tools. Recording sessions for the service Egen nedladdning, and possible challenges in connection to these, are also takeninto account and also information and knowledge acquisition among librarians in the case of talking books. Also, the communication and meetings between the talking book readers and library staff are discussed, and the service Egen nedladdning impact on this question. The essay ends with a discussion in which the talking book function at public libraries is discussed based on themes of space, technology and literature brokering and where operational opportunities and challenges in this regard are outlined. This is a two years master’s thesis in Libraryand information science.
