Briefing the Ambassador: Joseph Davies and the U.S. Press Corps in Moscow, 1936-1938

This thesis examines the writing of U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union Joseph Davies, Norman Deuel of the United Press, and Joseph Barnes of the New York Herald Tribune over the course of their respective postings in Moscow between 1936-1938. The purpose of this thesis is to look past interpretations of perceived right and wrong reporting on the Soviet Union and instead identify precisely how and why Americans outside the diplomatic corps viewed and perhaps identified with aspects of Stalinist society. Residing in Moscow over an extended period of time, Davies, Barnes, and Deuel were not mere observers. Immersed in Soviet society, Davies and the press correspondents became themselves producers of socialist realist writing as their American affinity for ambitious modernization translated into an idealized view of Stalinist modernization projects, one which viewed present hardships through a socialist realist lens while echoing Soviet enthusiasm for medical and scientific advancements, material plenty, heroics, youth, and territorial exploration. Excluded from the close-knit circle of career diplomats, Davies and the newsmen also came to view the Moscow show trials through the same socialist realist lens, one which presented the desired utopian future through elaborate socialist realist theatre.

Escolhe fazer essa viagem através do olhar sempre perturbador de Norman Mailer, repetindo o caminho feito por ele no romance Um Sonho Americano, obra objeto de nossa pesquisa. Pretende ainda detalhar as questões que assolam a cosnciencia do homem moderno, especialmente o Estado, na composição de seres que erram, e que são perdoados, argumento final de nossa análise. Tentamos dessa forma entender a escrita de Norman Mailer a partir de seus personagens, assim como pela janela de seus argumentos, ou seja, um mundo caótico que ainda está longe de ser entendido. / This dissertation aims to undertake a long journey through peculiar contexts in the historical spawn that goes from the post war of the XXth century until the explosion of the civil rights movement during the 60', having as scenery the United States of America. We have chosen to take this trip through the disturbing lengths of Norman Mailer, repeating his path in the novel An American Dream, central work of our research. We also aimed at detailing the issues that hunt the conscience of modern men, specially the State, composing beings who make mistakes and that are fully forgiven, ultimate argument of our analysis. The magic pudding : a verbal and pictorial translation

A partir de minha tradução para o português brasileiro de The Magic Pudding (1918), novela infantil australiana escrita e ilustrada por Norman Lindsay, o objetivo desta dissertação é demonstrar as peculiaridades da tradução de literatura infantil ilustrada. Portanto, este estudo analisa o papel das ilustrações na tradução, enquanto levanta questões sobre a adaptação literária em uma época em que novos meios e tecnologias de leitura competem com o livro impresso pela atenção infantil. Como O Pudim Mágico é a primeira tradução da novela para o português, e devido à importância das ilustrações na narrativa, é proposta uma tradução estrangeirizada para que elementos da cultura e da natureza australianas, especialmente alimentos e animais, permaneçam visíveis no texto de chegada. Pelas mesmas razões, tanto o texto propriamente dito quanto as ilustrações são tratados como textos, respectivamente, verbal e pictórico, em oposição aos peritextos verbal e pictórico acrescentados ao texto de chegada. Este estudo é dividido em quatro capítulos: 1) apresentação da biografia e obra do autor, bem como do contexto em que The Magic Pudding foi escrito, seguida pelo resumo detalhado da novela, uma discussão sobre as peculiaridades da tradução para crianças e, baseadas principalmente em Lawrence Venuti e Gérard Genette, as justificativas para a abordagem estrangeirizante com o emprego de elementos peritextuais; 2) apresentação das estratégias de Javier Franco Aixelá para a tradução de itens culturais-específicos para discutir o tratamento de nomes próprios contendo significados culturais; considerando o leitor-alvo, é sugerido o acréscimo de elementos peritextuais, tais como novas ilustrações combinadas com um prefácio verbal, a fim de evitar o emprego de notas de rodapé; 3) análise da influência da ilustrações de Lindsay na tradução, com sugestões para o tratamento do texto verbal de chegada; 4) discussão sobre tópicos de adaptação e transmidiação de literatura infantil, com sugestões para tratar os textos verbal e pictórico na transposição de O Pudim Mágico de meio impresso a digital; com base principalmente nos estudos de Lars Elleström e Ellen McCracken, dispositivos digitais de leitura como o Amazon Kindle e o Apple iPad são analisados, concluindo-se que o texto-alvo é considerado uma tradução em formato impresso, uma remidiação em formato para Kindle e uma transmidiação em formato para iPad. / Based on my unpublished translation of The Magic Pudding (1918), Australian children’s novel written and illustrated by Norman Lindsay, this thesis aims at demonstrating the peculiarities of translating illustrated children’s literature. Therefore, it analyses the role of the illustrations in the translation while raising questions on literary adaptation at a time when new reading media and technology compete with the printed book for children’s attention. Given that O Pudim Mágico is the first translation of the novel into Portuguese and due to the importance of the illustrations in the narrative, I propose a foreignised translation to preserve Australia’s cultural and natural elements, in particular foods and animals, visible in the target text. For the same reasons, both the text proper and the illustrations are regarded as texts, respectively verbal and pictorial, in opposition to the verbal and pictorial peritexts added to the target text. This study is divided into four chapters: 1) a presentation of the author’s biography and oeuvre, as well as of the context in which The Magic Pudding was written, followed by a detailed summary of the novel, a discussion on the peculiarities of translating for children and, mainly based on Lawrence Venuti and Gérard Genette, a justification for the foreignising approach with the employment of peritextual elements; 2) a presentation of Javier Franco Aixelá’s strategies to translate culture-specific items in order to discuss the treatment of proper names that hold cultural meanings; considering the target reader, the addition of peritextual elements, such as new illustrations combined with a verbal preface, is suggested as a means to avoid the employment of footnotes; 3) an analysis of the influence of Lindsay’s illustrations on the translation with suggestions for the treatment of the verbal target text; 4) a discussion on issues of adaptation and transmediation of children’s literature, with suggestions for treating the verbal and pictorial texts in the transposition of O Pudim Mágico from printed to digitised media; based mainly on the studies by Lars Elleström and Ellen McCracken, digital reading devices such as Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad are analysed to conclude that the novel’s target text is deemed to be a translation in print format, a remediation on Kindle and a transmediation on iPad. Readers’ Perceptions of Gender, Use of Stereotypes and Identification with Literary Texts : Selected South African High School Students’ Responses on “A Rose for Emily”

Selected South African high school students’ perceptions of stereotypes in William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” are the center of attention in an attempt to establish or refute the existence of a uniform interpretation in the interpretive community. The textual reader responses were collected by using a questionnaire. The results show that the respondents use stereotypes to understand encounters with literary texts and as tools to connect the content of the text with their own experiences. The stereotypes also provide a framework for the readers to position themselves with or against the text and the depicted characters. Consequently, the female respondents are more inclined to distance themselves from sexist values than the male readers. Next to all the readers condemn racist values and racist language detectable in the text. Overall, the readers distance themselves from negative values and identify themselves with positive values. The results show that readers use a variety of stereotypes as aids to interpret the characters, events, values and structure of society in “A Rose for Emily”.

Two selected works for solo trumpet commissioned by the International Trumpet Guild: A structural and performance analysis with a history of the commission project, with three recitals of selected works by Arutunian, Haydn, Fasch, Chaynes and others

An historical overview of the ITG commission project is presented, as well an analysis of formal organization and significant features for two of the commissioned works: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Norman Dello Joio and Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen. Complete histories of all works and information concerning their premieres is chronicled. The degree of difficulty of each composition is assessed through an investigation of tessitura, range, melodic contour, endurance factors, articulation, fingerings, and technical features of the accompaniment (when applicable). Analysis of tempi and dynamics, articulation and phrasing, and timbral considerations provides additional points of study. The thirteen commissioned solo works from 1978 to 1993 are: Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Norman Dello Joio, Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Orchestra by Bernhard Heiden, Laude by Stan Friedman, Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Raymond Premru, Chamber Music VII: Ceremonies and Chamber Music VIII by Robert Suderburg, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Fisher Tull, Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by William Schmidt, Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble by Jan Bach, Arioso for Trumpet and Woodwind Quintet by Jerzy Sapieyevsky, Invocation of Orpheus by Robert X. Rodriguez, Triptych by David Sampson, and Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen. The importance of these works and their impact on the trumpet repertoire is assessed. Possible reasons for the acceptance of some of these works by trumpeters versus the lack of acceptance of the others are proposed. Through interviews with some of the composers, analyses of the compositions and a comparative survey of performance programs by members of the International Trumpet Guild, conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the commissioning project and its future are drawn.

Smarttelefoner med applikationer har öppnat upp för nya kommunikationsmöjligheter. Denna studie undersöker den kontaktskapande applikationen Tinder, utifrån användarnas upplevelse av applikationen. Tinder är en positionsbaserad kontaktskapande realtidsapplikation som har flera miljoner användare världen över. Varje användare måste koppla upp sin profil mot Facebook, varifrån profilbilder, namn, ålder och gemensamma vänner hämtas. I studien undersöktes hur unga vuxna i åldern 18-30år, bosatta i Stockholm förhåller sig till hur Tinders funktioner och gränssnitt bidragit till applikationens genomslag. Studien baseras på Normans sex designprinciper, enkätsvar från 120 personer samt intervjuer med användare inom målgruppen. Resultatet visade att anledningen till Tinders framgång är en kombination av tre faktorer. Den första är att applikationen förhåller sig till Normans designprinciper. Den andra är att det skapas en trygghetskänsla hos användarna genom att i Tinders fall koppla varje användare till dennes Facebook-konto, samt att marknadsföra applikationen på rätt sätt. Tinder lyckades med det sistnämnda genom att marknadsföra och utforma applikationen som en kontaktskapande applikation snarare än en dejtingapplikation, vilket lockar en något annorlunda målgrupp. / Smartphones with applications have created new communication opportunities. This study explores the application Tinder by examining the user experience. Tinder is a location-based application which has millions of users worldwide. Each user has to connect their profile to Facebook, from which Tinder gets the users' profile pictures, names, age and mutual friends. In the thesis, we examine how young adults of age 18 to 30, living in Stockholm, relate to how Tinder's functions and interface have contributed to the success of the application. The study is based on the six design principles created by Norman, a survey with 120 respondants that has used the application and interviews. The results show that the reason for Tinder's success is a combination of three factors. The first is that the application relates to Norman's six design principles. The second reason is that a sense of security created for the users of the profile's connection to Facebook. The third is that Tinder has been marketing their application not as a datingapplication, but as a way for people to meet others, which attracts a slightly different target group.

Bidragsfusk i det senmoderna samhället : en analys av diskussioner på Flashback Forum

Våra attityder har stor betydelse för det kontrollkriminologiska fältets utseende och för de civil och straffrättsliga institutionernas funktion i vår samtid. Forumanvändarnas språkbruk är i den meningen ideologiskt och bidrar till att underbygga den rådande världsbilden. En världsbild som legitimerar etablerade maktförhållanden. Av denna anledning är medvetenhet om dominerande attityder betydelsefullt. En kritisk granskning av inläggen i Flashback Forum bidrar till att klargöra de sociala konsekvenserna av människors inställning till bidragsfusk. Syftet med uppsatsen är att genom Norman Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys granska forumanvändarnas attityder om grovt bidragsfusk i Flashback Forum mot bakgrund av nyliberala tankegångar. Detta innebär att texten analyseras i förhållande till det bredare sociala sammanhanget. Analysen visar att forumanvändarnas krav på mer förebyggande säkerhetsarbete i form av nya lagar och en förändrad tillämpning av existerande civil- och förvaltningsrättsliga lagar uttrycks i förhoppning om att på ett effektivare sätt hantera inbillade källor till skada - en nyliberal föreställning besatt av osäkerhet. Samtidigt resulterar denna process i en kriminalisering av alla människor i behov av stöd från det offentliga välfärdssystemet.

This thesis analyzes the way of presenting the catastrophe called Sandy in the Czech media. The motivation for choosing this topic was the ascertainment that the information about Sandy narrows only on the information about New York in spite of the fact, that this hurricane, sometimes called tropical storm or "superstorm" caused many injuries in the area of Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas and especially Haiti. The analysis is realized by force of critical discourse analysis of Norman Fairclough, because this method is appropriate especially for analysing mass media texts in the way of offering complex view from the level of social context, through the process of production to the language form of texts. Consequently, theoretical background comes from the methods and concepts of Norman Fairclough, from the definition of media discourse, which is oriented on new media, news and news values. The analysis is oriented on the most readable Czech online news and the on the news web pages of the Czech public service television and the Czech public service radio. Nous étudions le merveilleux dans deux récits médiévaux qui racontent la fable bretonne de Tristan et Yseut, le récit de Béroul et le récit norrois de Frère Robert qui suit la version courtoise anglo-normande de Thomas d’Angleterre. L’analyse nous montre que le récit norrois est plein de thèmes merveilleux dans les chapitres, comme des combats avec un dragon et des géants dans une forêt d’elfes. Cependant, le récit de Béroul ne contient aucun thème merveilleux, même si Béroul aussi fait référence à des éléments merveilleux comme le philtre, ce qui amène à la conclusion qu’il traite l’amour courtois mais d’une façon non merveilleuse. / We study the supernatural in two medieval narratives that tell the Breton fable of Tristan and Yseut, the narrative by Béroul and the Norse narrative by Brother Robert, which follows the Anglo-Norman courtly version of Thomas of England. Our analysis shows us that the Norse story is full of the supernatural themes throughout the chapters, e.g., fights with a dragon and giants in a forest of elves. Nevertheless, Béroul’s account contains no supernatural theme, although Béroul also refers to supernatural passages such as the potion, the conclusion being that hedeals with courtly love but in a non-supernatural manner.

This diploma thesis with the title The phenomenon of Karel Gott in Czech press during 1960s-1980s researches a media representation of Karel Gott. Media representation of the most popular singer of Czechoslovakia is in this thesis constructed based on the analysis of media contents of three contemporary printed serials during the years 1959-1989. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on the area of cultural politics, it deals with specific attributes of popular music in Czechoslovakia and it also presents the identity of Karel Gott. This part of thesis also deals with the press production with focus on the censorship. The aim of this thesis is to compile the media representation of Karel Gott using the method of critical discourse analysis presented by Norman Fairclough. The analysis uses mentioned method to research contents regarding Karel Gott and published in contemporary printed media, such as the serial Mladý svět, Vlasta, Pionýrské noviny, Sedmička and also Sedmička pionýrů. The purpose of this research work is to find out if and in which ways was the media representation of Karel Gott helping to establish the dominant discourse.
