Resistance is Never Futile: Un-sporting Surfing as Radical Female BehaviorUnknown Date (has links)
Using the narrative imagery of Instagram and the cultural narrative of the
Olympics, I explore the role of agency and autonomy in modern sport with a focus on the
commercial and institutional arms of surfing. This project is an attempt to evaluate visual
and cultural narrative from the perspective of a literary scholar and to root theory and
philosophy in issues that go beyond scholarship and academics. In chapter one, I use
sports sociologists Jennifer Hargreaves and Krista Comer as well as Jean Kilbourne and
Rosalind Gill to illuminate and explore two surf-centric Instagram accounts, both of
which imagine a story of surfing through a mostly visual medium. In chapter two, I turn
to Elizabeth Grosz and Michel Foucault to help explore the institutionalized arm of
surfing through its recent inclusion in the Olympic Games. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The gold women with many identities : A qualitative study of the Swedish tabloids representation of the Olympic games in Pyeongchang 2018.Viklund, Klara, Åkerman, Sarah January 2019 (has links)
The motive of our study was to examine the differences and the similarities between how tabloids write about male versus female cross-country skiing participants. The main focus was to examine their adversities and successes at the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018. The study had two main questions to analyze this: “How does Swedish tabloids report about the female and male cross-country skiing teams at the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018?” and “How do Swedish tabloids report about the setbacks and successes regarding the Swedish cross-country skiing teams at the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018?”. The result of our discourse analysis showed us that the tabloids present the female national team’s performance differently to how they present the male national team's performance. We made a discourse analysis of nine different articles from the Swedish tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen. The tabloids write about the female national team’s performances and successes and they balance it by also writing about their setbacks. The reasoning we found as to why the tabloids writes about female athletes more in-depthly than the men is because there is a larger demand for it, owing to their huge success in the Olympics. In contrary, the articles about the male national team, the tabloids write about their setbacks without questioning underlying factors or previous training that could be the basis of their failures. The tabloids also choose to publish articles with more private themes when it comes to the female athletes. This does not occur in the articles about the male cross country national team. In the articles about the men, the tabloids choose not to include personal facts of any kind, all analysed articles deal instead with performance or setback related types of themes.

The Myth of Olympic Unity: The Dilemma of Diversity, Olympic Oppression, and the Politics of DifferenceDevitt, Mark 01 January 2011 (has links)
The dilemma of diversity is the tension that exists when prescriptive claims are required across reasonable pluralism. Scholar and philosopher Dwight Boyd believes that the dilemma of diversity must be addressed for the continued health of multicultural societies, and suggests that the solution can be found through democratic reciprocity. Though the International Olympic Committee (IOC) markets unity and peace through its Olympic Games, does the Olympics relieve the dilemma of diversity? By critically examining the IOC’s historic and recent treatment of Aboriginals, its encouragement of divisive nationalism, and its educational programs, it is clear that the IOC does not embrace reasonable pluralism. The IOC’s public pedagogy is one that conceals its dominance through diversity. In exposing this dominance, I will argue that the IOC must embrace democratic reciprocity that allows for conversation across difference. Adopting an authentic acceptance of difference will alleviate the IOC’s propagation of Western ideology through neo-imperialism.

Far From Gold: Why Hosting the Olympics is Detrimental to the Host CountryDon, Carlen 01 January 2010 (has links)
Due to the excitement and prestige surrounding the Olympics, international perceptions of hosting the Games are positive and the Olympics are thought to bring prosperity and economic benefits to the host country. However this paper insists that hosting the Olympic Games is actually more detrimental to the host country than beneficial. Though each Games is different and every host country has the opportunity to create a positive Games, the negative aspects of hosting the Games create a difficult environment for any country to host a successful Games. Due to the negative effects of the Olympics on national unity, economic impact and international legitimacy, hosting the Olympics is a losing gamble for Olympic host nations.

Information management and globalised sport : a South African mega-event modelDurand, Charl 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reflecting a general trend in modern society, the world of sport has become information driven,
with effective information management becoming an essential part of all sports organisations and
sporting activities.
The sophistication oflarge, multi-sport events - mega-games - such as the Olympic Games and
Commonwealth Games demand a high standard of information management to help ensure the
smooth running of such events. This is also true of the managing of national teams participating in
them.
In this thesis a model of an information management system (IMS) is developed for managing
certain types of information in such events and the national team participating in them. The model
is based on two conceptual frameworks: Intellectual capital, and secondly the information
management cycle.
The model is then tested using a number of case studies where a specific information management
system was used to manage the information of different sports teams and events. The degree to
which the information management system was effectively implemented in each case is evaluated
and the results used to measure the correctness and accuracy of the model.
Lastly suggestions are given as to how the model can be improved in view of the case study
findings, and what the future role of information management in sports events may look like in light
of the results.
sulke byeenkomste glad verloop.

Previous issue date: 2017-02-24 / This research presents an exploratory and descriptive study on the journalistic coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games conducted by the SporTV channel through the live video broadcast platform Facebook Live via smartphone. The goal is to understand the implications of using live streaming on news production and journalistic practices from concepts such as mobility, mobile journalism, post-industrial journalism and actants. The research is theoretically and methodologically based on the Actor-Network Theory, through the method of Cartography of Controversies, to trace actions of the human and non-human actants present in said coverage and to describe their actions as mediators or intermediaries in the sociotechnical associations that generate the analyzed transmissions. As a result, we observe a reconfiguration in the journalist's role, which is to perform new functions, as well as a greater participation of the public in the construction of narratives, and also the growth of non-human actors such as algorithms, Facebook platforms, smartphones and infrastructure of internet connection networks.
