Political impact of strategic basing decisions

Fayrweather, Ryan J. 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / Relationships between the United States and its worldwide network of allies has, since the inception of NATO, greatly revolved around the United States' ability and desire to permanently station troops oversees. Since 1941, the United States has entered into these basing agreements for a variety of strategic and sometimes political reasons. From NATO's inception, and as the cornerstone of its defensive structure, the United States has combined the idea of sending troops to different regions of the world with a global basing strategy founded on the concepts of overlapping protection and deployability. At times, to gain access to areas of strategic interest, the United States has offered aid and economic assistance along with a military presence. In other cases, positively affecting the political climate of the country was the stated goal of troop presence. This thesis will examine the effects of basing in Greece and Spain in order to uncover lessons learned which might be applied to the new US global basing plan and current troop positioning activities in Kyrgyzstan. In both cases the United States worked with openly dictatorial governments for the purposes of basing and did not foster the long term political situation initially desired. / Captain, United States Army

Structural analysis of thermal interface materials and printed circuit boards in telecom units - a methodology

Good, Mattias January 2016 (has links)
A structural analysis on Ericssons MINILINK-6352 has been performed in order to investigate stresses and deformations of the unit, mainly focusing on the thermal interface materials and warpage of the printed circuit boards. These are important aspects when considering if the unit is thermally adequate from a mechanical point of view, where good surface contact between various bodies are critical for proper cooling through heat conductivity. The analysis requires sufficient materal data for the interface material and the circuit board in order to create suitable mathematical models. Uniaxial compression tests have been conducted to characterise the hyperelastic and viscoelastic constitutive laws of a filled silicone rubber material used as a thermal interface material, commonly referred to as a thermal pad. Bending of a printed circuit board was simulated and compared to a three-point bend test on the circuit board in order to verify material data already available in the computational software, which showed good agreement. The entire radio unit was mechanically analysed during its sealing process. The circuit board with attached components modelled as stiff blocks with thermal pads on top compressed by plates was simulated and a weak area was found. This area in question was already known and has in a later stage been eliminated by adding an additional supporting pillar. Hence this study shows a methodology to find regions of interest at an early design phase which can easily be altered to fulfil necessary requirements and eliminate design flaws. This work has proven useful in finding weak regions in the example product, it also provides enough information and example data to further investigate similar products. The combination of experience and simulation allows for smarter design choices.

Etude et modélisation d’un système de transmission d’énergie et de données par couplage inductif pour des systèmes électroniques dans l’environnement automobile / Modeling of wireless power transfer system by inductive coupling for electronic systems in automotive environment

Vigneau, Guillaume 12 July 2016 (has links)
Nowadays there is a strong demand of systems allowing to transfer energy in a wirelessly way to small electronic devices. So we can well understand the interest of such systems in embedded environments such as vehicle cockpit. The principle of magnetic induction comes from a magnetic flux exchange between two inductive antennas. The magnetic field will be used to transport an electrical power from an emitter to a receiver. These systems using the magnetic induction to transfer energy contain an emitter, inductive antennas (coils) and a receiver. A first chapter will be dedicated to the antennas employed in inductive wireless power transfer systems on theoretical and technological points of views. An electromagnetic modeling of these inductive antennas will be realized and validated through correlation with measurements. Once the modeling process defined and the validations done, it will be used through intensive electromagnetic simulations in order to show the impact of antennas parameters on their electrical and electromagnetic performances. After the inductive antennas characterization and their key parameters identification done, we will study in a second time the magnetic induction effects when emission and reception antennas are placed together in order to realize an inductive power transfer. Notions of magnetic coupling which appears between inductive antennas and magnetic efficiency which characterizes how much quantities of power are transferred will be highlighted. In the same conditions as before, the impact of antennas parameters on the power transfer and magnetic coupling will be investigated through electromagnetic modeling of inductive antennas and the use of intensive electromagnetic simulations. Thus, we will have the opportunity to precisely understand the meaning of the inductive power transfer and the different ways of optimizations. By this way, we will also propose some general design guidelines for antennas employed in inductive wireless power transfer systems. A third chapter will be dedicated to the presentation of the different electronic stages used in inductive wireless power transfer systems. A part of it will be employed on the definitions of the different elements allowing the wireless power transfer on a system approach. The design, optimization and measurement of power amplifiers used on the emission stage will be presented too.. Indeed, it is necessary to have efficient power amplification in order to transfer the required power to different receivers such as phones at the same time to limit the power losses. From circuit modeling of different emitter and receiver and with circuit simulations, we will develop power budgets in order to evaluate the performances and limits of these systems. Once the simulation validated by measurement, we will be able to quantify the total power transfer efficiency and propose optimization ways. Because of the current existence of different inductive wireless power standards on the industrial market for electronic consumer, analogies with them will be done all along the different steps of this thesis in order to highlighted their different functioning principles.

The Effects of Testicular Nerve Transection and Epididymal White Adipose Tissue Lipectomy on Spermatogenesis in Syrian Hamster

Spence, Jeremiah E. 30 July 2008 (has links)
Previous investigators demonstrated that epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT) lipectomy suppressed spermatogenesis and caused atrophy of the seminiferous tubules. EWAT lipectomy, however, may disrupt testicular innervation, which reportedly compromises testicular function. To resolve this confound and better clarify the role of EWAT in spermatogenesis, three experimental groups of hamsters were created in which: i.) the superior and inferior spermatic nerves were transected (SSNx) at the testicular level, ii.) EWAT was extirpated (EWATx), and iii.) testicular nerves and EWAT were left intact (SHAM controls). It was hypothesized that transection of the superior and inferior spermatic nerves would disrupt normal spermatogenesis. The findings indicate a significant reduction in spermatogenic activity and marked seminal tubule atrophy within the EWATx testis, as compared to the SSNx and controls testes, which did not differ significantly from each other. From these data, it is concluded that EWAT, and not testicular innervation, is central to normal spermatogenesis.

Carrascal Vaquero, Isidro Alfonso 06 October 2006 (has links)
The new Spanish High Speed Railways (AVE) involve, regarding its predecessor, Madrid-Seville line, an increase in the maximum speed, going from 280-300 km / h of the original line to 350 km / h that expects in the new routes. This speedup produces greater efforts that affect the superstructure of the track and, therefore, resizing of all design parameters of the track is required. The fastening system is among the components of the superstructure. This system is made up of a set of small track pieces that fasten the rail to the sleeper giving structural continuity to the track. The fastening system is becoming more important because of this greater efforts caused by the increased speeds, becoming a key element of the track superstructure. The aim of this thesis is, first, to find the optimum fastening system that well suits the requirements set by the administration in the "Terms for the supply of fasteners" for high speed railways. Secondly, this thesis, once the system has defined; analyzes the behaviour of the fastening, both from the point of view of individual component, and from a global perspective. This analysis includes all the important properties of the system, from the mechanical properties, whether static or dynamic, to the electrical properties, besides the hardness and deterioration. Also, the possible changes undergone for these properties depending of external parameters, such as the environmental measure, and own internal parameters of the fastening system were studied.

Scintillator Pad Detector: Very Front End Electronics

Luengo Álvarez, Sonia 16 July 2008 (has links)
Laboratory in La Salle is a member of a Credited Research Group by La Generatitat. This group is formed by a part of the ECM department, a part of the Electronics department at UB (University of Barcelona) and La Salle's group. Together, they are involved in the design of a subdetector at LHCb Experiment at CERN: the SPD (Scintillator Pad Detector). The SPD is a part of LHCb Calorimeter. That system provides high energy hadrons, electron and photons candidates for the first level trigger. The SPD is designed to distinguish electrons and photons for this first level trigger. This detector is a plastic scintillator layer, divided in about 6000 cells of different size to obtain better granularity near the beam. Charged particles will produce, and photons will not, ionisation on the scintillator. This ionisation generates a light pulse that is collected by a Wavelength Shifting (WLS) fibre that is twisted inside the scintillator cell. The light is transmitted through a clear fibre to the readout system. For cost reduction, these 6000 cells are divided in groups using a MAPMT of 64 channels for receiving information in the readout system. The signal outing the SPD PMTs is rather unpredictable as a result of the low number of photostatistics, 20-30 photoelectrons per MIP, and the due to the response of the WLS fibre, which has low decay time. Then, the signal processing must be performed by first integrating the total charge and later subtracting to avoid pile-up. This PhD is focused on the VFE (Very Front End) of SPD Readout system. It is performed by a specific ASIC (designed by the UB group) which integrates the signal, makes the pile-up compensation, and compares the level obtained to a programmable threshold (distinguishing electrons and photons), an FPGA which programs the ASIC thresholds, pile-up subtraction and mapping the channels in the detector and finally LVDS serializers, in order to send information to the first level trigger system. Not only mechanical constraints had to be taken into account in the design of the card as a result of the little space for the readout electronics but also, on one hand, the radiation quote expected in the environment and on the other hand, the distance between the VFE electronics and the racks were information is sent and the signal range that this kind of experiments usually have.

Lindner, Frank 22 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Characterization and Prediction of Fracture within Solder Joints and Circuit Boards

Nadimpalli, Siva 31 August 2011 (has links)
Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens with distinct intermetallic microstructures and different geometries were fractured under different mode ratios of loading, ψ, to obtain critical strain energy release rate, Jc. The strain energy release rate at crack initiation, Jci, increased with phase angle, ψ, but remained unaffected by the joint geometry. However, the steady-state energy release rate, Jcs, increased with the solder layer thickness. Also, both the Jci and Jcs decreased with the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer. Next, mode I and mixed-mode fracture tests were performed on discrete (l=2 mm and l=5 mm) solder joints arranged in a linear array between two copper bars to evaluate the J = Jci (ψ) failure criteria using finite element analysis. Failure loads of both the discrete joints and the joints in commercial electronic assemblies were predicted reasonably well using the Jci from the continuous DCBs. In addition, the mode-I fracture of the discrete joints was simulated with a cohesive zone model which predicted reasonably well not only the fracture loads but also the overall load-displacement behavior of the specimen. Additionally, the Jci calculated from FEA were verified estimated from measured crack opening displacements in both the continuous and discrete joints. Finally, the pad-crater fracture mode of solder joints was characterized in terms of the Jci measured at various mode ratios, ψ. Specimens were prepared from lead-free chip scale package-PCB assemblies and fractured at low and high loading rates in various bending configurations to generate a range of mode ratios. The specimens tested at low loading rates all failed by pad cratering, while the ones tested at higher loading rates fractured in the brittle intermetallic layer of the solder. The Jci of pad cratering increased with the phase angle, ψ, but was independent of surface finish and reflow profile. The generality of the J =Jci(ψ) failure criterion to predict pad cratering fracture was then demonstrated by predicting the fracture loads of single lap-shear specimens made from the same assemblies.
