Rome in ninth-century Anglo-Saxon England

Pengelley, Oliver C. H. January 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the impact of Rome upon Anglo-Saxon politics, religion, and culture in the ninth century. From the Gregorian mission onwards, Rome helped shape the ecclesiastical and devotional contexts of Anglo-Saxon Christianity and occupied a central place in the imaginations of early English writers. Yet the extent to which these links continued into and throughout the ninth century remains obscure, with scholarship about religion and culture often treating the period as a hiatus. In political narratives, the ninth century is treated as a crucial period, and Roman involvement is most visible in this sphere. By redressing the imbalance between religion and politics, this thesis achieves a thorough appreciation of the part played by Rome in these various fields of experience, as well as showing how Anglo-Saxon writers located themselves and their pasts in relation to the city. It does so over the course of five thematic chapters, which progress from an analysis of the most fundamental issues to more imaginative ones. Chapter one examines contact and communication between England and Rome, arguing that the two areas were closely and constantly connected across the century. The second and third chapters explore the impact of Rome on religion and kingship respectively, finding that while Roman influence on the church was most pronounced in the first half of the century, in political terms the city played a significant and changing role throughout the period. Chapters four and five consider the position of Rome in Anglo-Saxon historical thought and geographical understanding, examining how writers continued to define their position in a wider Christian world with reference to the city and its past. This thesis argues that, in the ninth century, Rome continued to play an important role in English life, while also influencing Anglo-Saxon thought and experience in new and dynamic ways.

[en] THE PATH OF EARTH AND THE PATH OF SALVATION: A STUDY OF DANTE ALIGHIERI´S MONARCHY / [pt] A ESTRADA DA TERRA E A ESTRADA DA SALVAÇÃO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE O TRATADO DA MONARQUIA DE DANTE ALIGHIERI

MARIA EUGENIA BERTARELLI 05 October 2005 (has links)
[en] The work consists of a study of Monarchy, a political- philosophy treaty written by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) in the beginning of the XIV century. Recherche sur l'iconographie de saint Grégoire le Grand dans les manuscrits des IXe-XIIe siècles en Occident / Research on the iconography of St. Gregory the Great in the IXth-XIIth centuries manuscripts in West

Lafond, Nelly 17 November 2012 (has links)
The iconography of St. Gregory the Great (ca. 540 - March 12, 604) has so far been little studied, despite a resurgence of studies recognized for several decades. When we know the importance of this saint in medieval society, especially from the ninth century to the twelfth century, it seems therefore logical to study the iconographic aspects and issues emanating from it. A rich antique heritage and especially carolingian giving it authority, the Gregorian picture often inserted within an image tripartite hierarchy (God, man and the book), seems to be linked to several data: hagiographic, scenic, scriptural or geographic. It describes the relationship between oral and written records, reports changes depending on litteras and the importance of storage and research shows acute sense. Tending to move away from hagiographics bases, it emphasizes between the IXth and XIth centuries, the vocalization, and then, in the twelfth century, on the representation of the different phases of the life of a text (inspiration, transcription, writing, transmission), this that the image is linked to the production of the book focuses on the representation of the transmission of knowledge and teaching wherein the visualization of knowledge becomes important (genealogical and didactic research focus on the virtues of the saint). Gregory, endowed with imperial attributes raising him toward beyond, is integrated into an image representing the invisible because God remains hidden from the view of the man. These pictures to be inserted in the liturgical context and sensitive, are not only reflected the main concerns theological, moral or canonical time but mostly trying to legitimize them.

The power of God : A study of power in medieval religious discourse regarding the crusades / Guds makt : En studie om makt i medeltida religiös diskurs rörande korstågen

Pilhage, Olof January 2018 (has links)

Proměny diskurzů českého katolického exilu v Itálii 1962-1969 / Discursive Transformation during the Czech Catholic Exile in Italy 1962-1969

Blažek, Ondřej January 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with events during the Czech Catholic exile in Italy with a focus on the 1960's. It provides a closer look at the institutional and discursive changes that took place at the time of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and the subsequent stay of Cardinal Josef Beran in Rome (1965-1969). The work focuses mainly on the development of the publishing house Christian Academy, the Velehrad Center and the Nepomucenum Papal College where the leading figures of Czech Catholic exile, mostly priests, worked. By using the method of historical discourse analysis the work studies how the pro-conciliary orientation which defined itself in opposition towards conservative tendency in the Church became increasingly predominant in the exile environment. Last but not least, the work also shows how the form of Catholic exile discourse in Italy was influenced by the changing relationship between papal diplomacy and Communist Czechoslovakia.
