[pt] A presente tese discute estratégias de visibilidade social e midiática a partir de práticas de comunicação empreendidas por jovens no Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brasil, e em Nova Orleans (LA), Estados Unidos. Para tanto, são apresentados relatos de estudo de campo realizado nestas cidades, apoiado no método etnográfico – elegendo como ferramental a pesquisa participante e a análise qualitativa em perspectiva feminista –, além do amparo teórico alicerçado em tópicos da Comunicação, da Sociologia e da Antropologia, principalmente. Os sujeitos observados no Brasil (2014-2016) são idealizadores, promotores e participantes de festivais e batalhas de passinho, dança que surgiu nos anos 2000 nas favelas cariocas. Enquanto estilo que congrega cada vez mais meninos e meninas, com significativa repercussão midiática, o passinho revela aspectos comuns aos indivíduos favelados, situações cotidianas que passam por escolha de caminhos a seguir, conflitos de interesses pessoais e da família e a relação com o território que, em resposta a um estigma de lugar, tem sido ressignificada no orgulho da afirmação sou favelado. Na singularidade do corpo performático, o passinho posiciona o dançarino nas questões coletivas que o aproximam de outros em condições semelhantes. Já a investigação em campo em Nova Orleans (2015- 2016) permitiu a observação do ativismo juvenil em eventos de poesia (spoken word) organizados pelo New Orleans Youth Open Mic e em postagens do Blog Noirlinians, que explora moda, cultura e território, na esteira de movimentos sociais contemporâneos, como Black Lives Matter. Ambos mobilizam majoritariamente jovens pretos, conectados por referenciais e práticas de autorreconhecimento como via possível de produção de visibilidade em um contexto que o estigma está na cor da pele. Os grupos acompanhados no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos têm em comum a criatividade e a expressão corporal como fórum de discussão e meio de representação, além do uso de mídias sociais digitais e website para promoverem suas atividades, comunidades e a si próprios, ultrapassando, pela mobilização cultural e artística, a geografia de suas cidades. A partir do tripé juventudes, representações e visibilidade, que sustenta esta análise, verificou-se nos comportamentos e práticas juvenis a manifestação de indivíduos que percebem e assumem a relação social como uma experiência que passa pela via da sensibilidade, transcendendo interações pessoais e apoiando-se, cada vez mais, no campo das possibilidades advindas da vida digital, a fim de buscar reconhecimento em um contexto de padrões de valoração sociocultural institucionalizados que fazem com que algumas pessoas se tornem invisíveis, simplesmente pelo fato de não responderem a modelos ideais de ser, ter, pertencer, comportar-se, como os participantes favelados e pretos deste estudo. Nesta composição, corpo e novas tecnologias surgem, então, como elementos estratégicos na construção e proposição de (auto)representações entre as juventudes observadas, de forma que se evidenciam, pelo menos, dois aspectos: 1) O corpo juvenil destaca-se como a própria mídia, plataforma central, explorada como território político, construído poética e culturalmente; 2) Práticas comunicacionais possibilitadas por novas tecnologias potencializam distintas experiências de subjetivação. Tais experiências permitem a apreciação do saber proveniente da sensorialidade: as maneiras como jovens habitam diferentes territórios – físicos e virtuais - e traçam suas trajetórias – muitas vezes agindo individualmente, porém, jogando luz sobre competências coletivas. / [en] This thesis discusses strategies of social and media visibility based on communication practices launched by young people in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil, and in New Orleans (LA), United States. In order to do so, we present the reports of a fieldwork carried out in these cities, supported by the ethnographic method - participant research and qualitative analysis in a feminist perspective - as well as the theoretical support based on topics of Communication, Sociology and Anthropology, mainly. The young people observed in Brazil (2014-2016) are idealizers, promoters and participants of festivals and battles of passinho, a dance originated in the years 2000 in the Rio s shantytowns. As a style that congregates more and more boys and girls, with significant media repercussions, passinho reveals common aspects of individuals from favelas, everyday situations that pass through the choice that they make to follow in their lives, conflicts of personal and family interests and the relationship with the territory that in response to a stigma of place, it has been re-signified in the pride of the statement I am favelado. In the singularity of the performative body, passinho places the dancer in the collective questions that brings him closer to others in similar conditions. The fieldwork in New Orleans (2015-2016) allowed the observation of youth activism in spoken word events organized by the New Orleans Youth Open Mic and in the posts of Blog Noirlinians which explores fashion, culture and territory in the wake of contemporary social movements, such as Black Lives Matter. Both mobilize mostly black youth, connected by referential and practices of selfrecognition as a possible way of producing visibility in a context where the stigma is in the skin color. The groups observed in Brazil and in the United States have in common the creativity and the corporal expression as a forum of discussion and means of representation, besides the use of digital social media and website to promote their activities, communities and themselves, surpassing, for cultural and artistic mobilization, the geography of their cities. From the base of youths, representations and visibility, which supports this analysis, it was verified in the youth s behaviors and practices the manifestation of individuals who perceive and assume the social relation as an experience that passes through the path of sensitivity. Transcending personal interactions, those young people have seeked out recognition in a context of institutionalized sociocultural valuation patterns that make some people invisible simply because they do not respond to ideal models of to be, to have, to belong, to behave like the favelados and black people participants of this study. In this composition, body and new technologies appear as strategic elements in the construction and proposition of (self) representations among the youths observed, so that at least two aspects are evident: 1) The youth body emphasizes as the media itself, a central platform, exploited as a political territory, constructed poetically and culturally; 2) Communication practices made possible by new technologies enhance different experiences of subjectivation. Such experiences allow the appreciation of the knowledge that comes from sensoriality: the ways young people inhabit different territories - physical and virtual - and trace their trajectories - often acting individually, however, shed light on collective competences.

Enhancing discourse through motivation : a case study of high school teaching in Swaziland

Communication seems to play a pivotal role in any high school classroom. But it was found those classes or certain individual students shy away from engaging in effective communication during natural science lessons in Swaziland. One of the directives in the Swaziland National Education Policy states that syllabuses for studies in Form 4 and 5 should enable learners to develop essential skills which include communication and language skills. This study then, on realising that there was a gap between what was stated in the Education Policy and what was actually the case in the natural science classrooms, sought for a solution that would encourage effective communication in natural sciences. Therefore, the main purpose of the study was to encourage active participation of high school students in natural science lessons. The main research question posed for this purpose was: Can student motivation enhance classroom discourse for the negotiation of science understanding? Five sub-questions emanated from the main research question: (a) How does classroom discourse relate to natural science understanding? (b) What effect does external motivation have on discourse during natural science lessons? (c) What is the effect of feedback during natural science learning? (d) How can feedback be enhanced in the natural science class? (e) Which teaching strategies improve interactions during natural science learning? The study is organised into five chapters. The first chapter summarises the whole study by giving the problem statement, research aim and objectives, definition of terms, as well as chapter divisions. Chapter two provides the background to the study through the discussion of education theories based on classroom discourse and motivation. The third chapter presents detailed information about the research design, methods of data collection and analysis, as well as a proposed method for motivating students. The fourth chapter presents the research results, analysis and discussion. The fifth and the final chapter presents research findings, concluding remarks drawn from the research findings, as well as recommendations for similar future research. The case study style uses a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory approach. The study concentrated on theories explaining learning and motivation. The sample comprised six purposefully selected students and their two physical science teachers. Data were collected using the standardised open-ended interview and non-participant lesson observation methods, and from documents. The data were collected in two phases, the pre-motivation phase and the motivation phase. The collected data was further categorised into two segments, with each segment being a unit of analysis. One of the segments was composed of oral interchanges, while the other was composed of students’ written work. The data was then transcribed, coded, analysed and discussed using the thematic discourse analysis approach. The principles of triangulation, reliability and validity ensured the credibility of the study remained intact. Research ethics were also observed by the researcher and there was trust, respect and autonomy during data collection. The ethics observed included informed consent, confidentiality, beneficence, anonymity and non-malificence. Permission to collect data was sought and obtained from all concerned. The motivation method helped the physics group improve more (55%) than the chemistry group (7%) in tests. In the overall performance the two groups improved more or less the same: the chemistry group improved by 4% while the physics group improved by 5%. There were three main findings for the study and they revolved around the purpose and the research question. The first major finding was that the motivation method used with the students instilled self-discipline in the students, resulting in self-regulated behaviour and better understanding of science concepts. The finding suggested that motivated students are self-disciplined and take ownership of their learning. The second major finding was that during the motivation phase of data collection interactions improved between the students and their science teachers. These interactions were in the form of classroom talk, submission of school work and feedback. It was inferred that motivated students communicate more effectively and with better understanding of the concepts taught. The third major revelation was that the students were motivated by learner-centred teaching strategies and the use of teaching aids in a science laboratory. A main finding for the first sub-question was that the more students interacted with each other, with their natural science teachers, and with their books the more they appreciated and understood science concepts. For the second sub-question the main finding was, the motivation method used with the students improved discourse during natural science lessons. The marks the students were awarded gave them the energy to engage more in science activities and to behave well. The main finding for the third sub-question was that prompt feedback and positive comments motivated students to engage more in science discourse and to understand science concepts better. An important finding from the fourth sub-question was that prompt and positive feedback enhanced feedback, as well as giving students tasks that were not too far above their abilities, enhanced feedback in the natural science class. For the fifth sub-question it was found that student-centred teaching methods as well as teaching aids and learning in science laboratories improved interactions during natural science learning. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Narativní terapie u dětí traumatizovaných rozvodem rodičů / The NarrativeTherapy of Children Parent's Divorce Traumathized

This thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part deals with two separate realms which are then interconnected in the practical part. The first realm is narrative therapy, its description, function and implementation. One of the tools of narrative therapy is a therapeutic narration, which is discussed therein and is set into the field of social work. Next comes the second realm which is the topic of a divorce and children. There we discuss the influence of a divorce on children, the participants, and we are presented with the potentiality of how to diminish the negative influence. In the following practical part, we fist find a draft of a narration with therapeutic features from narrative therapy for children from divorced and divorcing families; the draft is supposed to alleviate the complications during and after a divorce. The other section of the practical part describes the research which verified whether the composed narration really helped alleviate the negative impact of a divorce on children. Evaluation of the state of the problematic areas performed both before and after the cooperation showed that narrative therapy helped to significanly decrease the number of serious problems in monitored areas. EFFECTIVENESS OF USING AUTOMATICALLY ADVANCED VS. MANUALLY ADVANCED INFOGRAPHICS IN HEALTH AWARENESS

<p dir="ltr">Infographics are increasingly used as visual communication tools for conveying health information to diverse audiences. However, research is lacking on how specific infographic design factors influence learning outcomes. This study aimed to determine the comparative effectiveness of automatically advanced (Group A) versus manually advanced (Group B) infographics for promoting breast cancer awareness and knowledge. A mixed-methods quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was utilized. The sample comprised 42 participants for analysis. Of these, the majority, 41 persons self-reported as female, with one participant indicating their gender as 'other.' Participant ages ranged from 25 to 55 years (M = 40.5, SD = 7.62). Most participants were well-educated, with graduate degrees or other advanced education beyond a bachelor's degree. Participants were randomly assigned to either the automatically advanced infographic group (Group A) or the manually advanced infographic group (Group B). Results indicated that Group B had significantly higher scores on the knowledge post-test compared to Group A, suggesting improved recall and comprehension of key information. There were no significant differences in cognitive load ratings or viewing duration between the groups. Qualitative feedback from participants suggested that Group B's manually advanced infographic facilitated better self-pacing and absorption of content. While the study's findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the efficacy of manually advanced infographics in learning complex health information, limitations are acknowledged. The research contributes to the design of patient education materials and underscores the necessity for further investigations across varied populations and health topics to understand the impact of infographic design more comprehensively on learning and behavior.</p>

The accessibility of translated Zulu health texts : an investigation of translation strategies

In disseminating information about health issues, government health departments and NGOs use, inter alia, written health texts. In a country like South Africa, these texts are generally written by medical experts and thereafter translated into the languages of the people. One of these languages is Zulu, which is spoken by the majority of South Africans. A large percentage of Zulu speakers are illiterate or semi-literate, especially in the rural areas. For this reason, Zulu translators have to use ‘simple’ language that these readers would understand when translating English texts into Zulu. Translators are expected to use strategies that can deal with non-lexicalized, problematic or other related terms that appear in health texts, as well as geographical and cultural constraints. This study focuses on the strategies used by Zulu translators in an attempt to make translated Zulu health texts accessible to the target readership. The investigation includes the use of self-administered questionnaires for respondents from two of South Africa’s nine provinces, where Zulu speakers are found (Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal), to determine whether the health texts do reach the target readership. Focus groups, semi-structured interviews and other complementary techniques were used to collect data from the selected respondents. Furthermore, a parallel concordance called ParaConc was used to extract and analyse data from the corpus as compiled for the present study, in an attempt to investigate the strategies used to make the translated health texts easier to read. The study uncovers various strategies which are used when translating English health texts into Zulu. These strategies include the use of loan words, paraphrasing, cultural terms and so on. In future, the use of ParaConc can be broadened to investigate newly discovered translation strategies, with the aim of making health texts more accessible to the target readers. Participatory community development : a networking approach

This thesis is an account of how a networking approach may assist participatory community development. The author undertakes naturalistic action research into how she can improve her social practice with a view to gaining equal participation amongst university and community members in a community development practicum. She describes how efforts to maximize group participation are typically countered with various forms of non-participation, analogous to a rebellion against authoritarianism. Dialogue with her doctoral peer group about tacit meanings from her personal history reveals that she is too heavily invested in community involvement. A stance of irreverence gives her the freedom to realize that her politically correct approach is conveying the message that "MY way of participation is THE way". She embarks on a networking programme of action in the hope of achieving more balanced participation. A multidisciplinary workshop and a study tour show her that openness to multiple inputs may free people from restrictive views and problematic styles of participation. She initiates the formation of a local network and finds that this is a more free-flowing structure that encourages fluid problem solving among community, government and university participants. The author's original anxieties are, however, revived when networking, too, becomes entangled in organizational complexities. She eventually realizes that she tends to base her actions on premises of power and justice and that it may be helpful to base new ventures on information flow and creativity instead. Her new approach to group facilitation elicits creative inputs from others. She finds that deliberate debate of the assumptions on which collective undertakings are based releases an awareness of alternative approaches to addressing unequal resource utilization in the commons. A review of the local Network's development over six years draws attention to networking resources, and its uses, structuring and management. The author's experiences continuously demonstrate that the assumptions of independence and freedom of choice may provide a more satisfactory basis upon which to manage community participation. / Social Work / D.Litt. et Phil. The importance of counter-culture in art and life

Punk rock provided not only a watershed of creativity, innovation and a do-it-yourself spirit to a culture saturated in the mainstream, it physically brought like-minded people together in a community, or rather extended family, which in today’s hyper-d.i.y. culture, is progressively declining. As early as the 1940s, theorists such as Adorno and Horkheimer warned us about alienation in a society increasingly dependent on technology. By looking to punk, and other resilient and robust counter-cultures, perhaps we can find solutions to the pitfalls of the ‘culture industry’ (Adorno, Horkheimer, 1944). My thesis, consisting of a feature-length documentary film and textual analysis, is a culmination of: ethnographic research into the punk scene in my own community; theoretical research into the sociology, ethnography and subculture theory; and my own subjectivity. My personal findings are presented to offer insight into punk philosophy and to spur discourse, rather than deliver an objective account or didactic reproach. / Graduate

台電需求面管理之經濟分析--用戶計劃性減少用電措施案例 / The economic analysis of Taipower’s demand-side management--The case of incentive plan for load curtailment program

過去電力事業為了滿足電力用戶之需求,對於新電源之開發不遺餘力。然而由於電力事業近年來在供給面規劃屢遭當地居民抗爭而受阻,因而晚近轉而強調用戶需求面之管理。 本文針對台電公司現行需求面管理之「用戶計劃性減少用電措施」四種方案進行研析。首先設定簡化條件,將四種方案予以模型化,利用經濟剩餘模型,進行邊際分析,探討台電公司提供優惠之折扣比例及電力的價格需求彈性如何參與用戶抑低容量以及消費者剩餘、生產者剩餘分配之效果。分析結果顯示:「計劃性(二)」抑低用戶負載容量最高,且參與用戶之消費者剩餘最多;「計劃性(一)」抑低用戶負載容量最低,且參與用戶之消費者剩餘最少。另一方面,若從電力公司之視角觀之,「計劃性(二)」之生產者剩餘最低,而「計劃性(一)」之生產者剩餘最高。 經濟剩餘模型分析中,由於未能充分考慮供需雙方之潛在成本與效益,因此實務上之解釋能力有其侷限之處。基於上述緣由,本文接著藉由成本效益分析,將方案實施之潛在成本與效益納入考量,分別從參與用戶之角度進行參與者檢定(Participant Cost Test, PCT)以及從電力公司之角度進行公用事業成本檢定(Utility Cost Test, UCT),以檢視不同方案在不同觀點下之績效表現。成本效益分析結果顯示:在PCT檢定下,「計劃性(四)」參與用戶之益本比最高,「計劃性(二)」參與用戶之益本比最低。而在UCT檢定下,「計劃性(一)」電力公司益本比最高,「計劃性(四)」電力公司益本比最低。將成本效益分析與經濟剩餘模型比較後可發現,用戶抑低容量高的方案對於電力公司而言未必最有利。 最後,為進一步探討關鍵變數變動造成不同方案間成本效益值之影響,因此進行敏感度分析。敏感度分析的結果顯示:若電力公司為吸引用戶而提高誘因,增加各方案給予用戶優惠折扣之比例,以參與用戶角度而言,「計劃性(四)」參與者檢定之益本比提高幅度最大;以電力公司角度而言,「計劃性(四)」公用事業成本檢定之益本比降低幅度最大。若電力公司提高參與用戶每次抑低用電負載之時數,以參與用戶角度而言,「計劃性(四)」參與者檢定之益本比降低幅度最大;以電力公司角度而言,「計劃性(四)」之公用事業成本檢定益本比提高幅度最大。 / In order to meet the users’ demand of electricity, the electric power utility spared no effort to develop the new power plant in the past. However, in recent years, the electric power utility have been hampered by local residents on supply-side planning, thus more emphasize is being put on users’ demand-side management(DSM). This paper aims to analyze four projects of Taipower’s existing demand-side management of “incentive plan for customers’ scheduled load curtailment program”. First, we set several simplified conditions for modeling the projects. By using the economic surplus model and conducting the marginal analysis, the impact from the discount incentive provided by the utility and the elasticity of electricity price demand is explored-on participants’ load capacity reduction and the distribution of consumer surplus and producer surplus. The results of economic surplus model showed "project 2" curtails the maximum load capacity and with the highest consumer surplus; "project 1" curtails the minimum load capacity and with the lowest consumer surplus. On the other hand, in the Taipower's point of view, "project 2" provides with the lowest producer surplus while "project 1" gives the highest producer surplus. In the economic surplus model, since the potential costs and benefit were not fully considered in both supply and demand sides, several limitations exist on this model. Based on the above reasons, we utilize the cost benefit analysis, taking the potential cost and benefit into account and conducting Participant Cost Test(PCT) from the participants’ perspective and Utility Cost Test(UCT)from the utility’s perspective to examine the performance under different 4 DSM projects in different point of view. The results of cost benefit analysis showed that in the PCT test, the "project 4" comes up with the highest benefit cost ratio while "project 2" has the lowest cost benefit ratio. In the UCT test, the "project 1" has the highest cost benefit ratio while "project 4" came with the lowest cost benefit ratio. Comparing the cost benefit analysis with the economic surplus model, we could find that the project with the most load capacity reduction may not be the most favorable project for the utility. Finally, in order to further explore the key variables affecting the cost and benefit value in different projects, we simulated several scenarios for sensitivity analysis. The results of the sensitivity analysis showed that if the utility increases incentives to increase four projects’ ratio of discount for attracting participant, in the participants’ perspective, "project 4" would have the most changed rate of cost benefit ratio(increase); in the utility's perspective, "project 4" would have the highest adjusted rate of cost benefit ratio(decrease). If the utility increases the load curtailment duration each time, in the participants’ perspective, "project4" would have the highest adjusted rate of cost benefit ratio(decrease) ; in the utility’s perspective, " project4 " would have the highest adjusted rate of cost benefit ratio(increase).
