Jan Palacký (1830-1908): Vědec ve stínu slavného otce / Jan Palacký (1830-1908): The scientist in the shadow of a famous father

Egrová, Miroslava January 2019 (has links)
Jan Palacký (1830-1908) was the first associate professor of geography at the Prague University and, after university division, the first professor of geography at the Czech Charles- Ferdinand University. He worked as a scientist for more than fifty years. He was well known abroad and represented the Czech Kingdom in a perfect way. His family was one of the most important families of Czech history. Jan Palacký was not as successful a politician - as his father František Palacký or his brother-in-law František Ladislav Rieger. He could not keep the family property which he lost as a result of the failed Chabrus elections in 1872. The aim of this thesis is to map the life of Jan Palacký in his life roles through this new perspective and using unused sources to point out Palacký's personal national identity. The focus of the thesis is the analysis of sources relating to Jan Palacký. The thesis is focused on Palacký family life, his scientific work and activities at the university, educational and charitable activities. The thesis also draws attention to the extensive scientific correspondence stored in the Literary archive of the Museum of Czech literature. Keywords 19th century, Kingdom of Bohemia, Jan Palacký, František Palacký, czech-german relations, personal relationships, geography, history of...

They did not get along afterwards and the initial euphoria and confidence of their relationship did not last long. As a time went it started to appear partial disagreements that resulted rupturing of work and personal relationship. Attitudes of Elementary Principals Toward Parent Involvement in Schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia

Brittle, Linda V. 01 December 1994 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the attitudes of principals toward parent involvement in schools. The population for the study consisted of all public school elementary principals in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A random sample procedure was employed and an instrument was developed specifically for the study. An initial and second mailing resulted in an overall response rate of 53%. Factor analysis identified 5 groupings in parent involvement. Factors were labeled: Decision-Making, Policy-Making, Home Tutor/Co-Learner, Socio-Economic Status, and Parent Desire and Expertise. Seven null hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. It was found that principals, in general, strongly believe in parent involvement and feel responsible for initiating it. The gender of the principal did not impact their attitude toward parent involvement. Younger principals supported parents as home tutors and co-learners more so than older principals. Principals with elementary teaching experience believed involving lower socio-economic parents and middle and upper income parents equally attainable. They, likewise, believed all parents, regardless of socio-economic background, desire to be involved in the education of their children. Principals who majored in elementary education were found to be more supportive of parent involvement in school policy-making and parents as home tutors/co-learners. Principals of larger schools and principals of higher socio-economic schools were more supportive of parent observations in classrooms and parents as home tutors/co-learners. In general, principals were more supportive of parent involvement in policy-making (goal setting, budget planning, and curriculum issues) than in school decision-making (staff evaluations and hiring).

Factors which Cause Families to Home School Their Children in Northeast Tennessee

England, Tony G. 01 December 1998 (has links)
The problem which this researcher investigated centered around the motivational factors which caused parents to educate their children at home. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors as perceived to cause families to home school their children. This study of home school education offered the opportunity to examine the dynamics within home schooling families as they conducted a non-traditional educational alternative. The study may provide information and insight to assist public school policy makers in considering inclusion of program components presently perceived as missing. Two home school associations in upper East Tennessee responded to a home school questionnaire. The data from the questionnaire presented a demographic overview of home school families and indicated the motivational factors for home schooling as opposed to enrollment in public schools. Six research questions were answered, and twelve hypotheses were tested using the Chi Square Test of Independence. The Chi Square Analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between the academic achievement in math of home school children and the types of curriculums used by parents. The Chi Square Analysis revealed no statistically significant relationship between the academic achievement of home school children and the types of group activities used by parents, and the hindrance of current state home school laws The results indicate that parents chose to home school their children because they felt it was the responsibility of parents to provide a child's education, and to control the moral environment of the child. Public school system personnel should make an effort to acquire information from registered home school families as to the causes and reasons families are opting to leave public education.

Sexuality has an important role in human life and there are many opinions about how to handle questions about sexuality. The attitudes have change over time and differ between different cultures, gender and age. This study deals with the question about youth attitudes to sex and personal relationships and what impact the education in this filed have on the youth. We have also studied how the education is organized. To get answers to these questions we have performed a questionnaire study among 116 students in grade seven to nine in an elementary school in Western Sweden. We have also interviewed two teachers in nature science in high grade and one school nurse. The analyses about the youth attitudes to sex and personal relationship are based on theories about sexuality, gender, socialization, culture differences, globalization, and consumption society. The study shows that the youth in general are equal in their attitudes to sexuality. Nearness, respect, love, self-knowledge are important, regardless gender. The attitudes about intercourse were different between boys and girls. They didn´t value the factors about sexual intercourse in the same way. Internet and sms plays an important role in how come in touch with each other. Boys thought that internet are important in sexual education.
