The broad aim of this study is to show, through a comparative and contrasting analysis
of three thematically related texts - namely Peter Abrahams's Mine Boy; Alan Patan's
Cry, the Beloved Country and Phyllis Altman's The Law of the Vultures - the
ideologically mediated nature of the relationship between the 'real' history which
constituted their context, and the representations of it in the historical realist form. An
examination afthe texts' characters and events; political formulations, and formal
devices reveals three very different representations of the same object. This diversity is
significant in so far as it supports a Marxist conceptualisation of the [historical] realist
text as a production of ideology as opposed to a portrayal of reality. The study
considers the nature of the relationship between each text and ideology in terms of
three aspects of this relationship: the 'objectively determinable' relation between
history, ideology and text; the ideology of the text itself, and the mode of a text's
insertion into an 'ideological sub-ensemble.' In relation to the modes of a text's
insertion into an ideological sub-ensemble, my specific aim is to assess the extent to
which each text actually challenges the political dispensation to which it was

Translational Wit: Seventeenth-Century Literary Translations of Selections from Ovid’s HeroidesLevenson, Sean I. 05 May 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to uncover the meaning of the difference between original versions and translations of two texts from Publius Ovidius Naso's Heroides, "Phyllis to Demophoon" and "Phaedra to Hippolytus." The first chapter describes John Dryden's system of translational practices and some theoretical issues surrounding literary translation and its critical interpretation. Even though translations have connections to the source text to some degree, each product of translation is a literary artifact on its own. The second chapter uses three translations of "Phyllis to Demophoon" by respectively Wye Saltonstall, Edward Pooley, and Edward Floyd as case studies demonstrating the variety of literary works that can originate from a single source text. The third chapter interprets Thomas Otway's translation of "Phaedra to Hippolytus" against Ovid's original in order to reveal the extensive presence of a certain characteristic irony in Otway's text. Otway also effectively translates Ovid's witty subtext.

Graves discusses the important role that women played in the anti-ERA campaign in Georgia during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a controversial and divisive piece of legislation that polarized both legislators and constituents throughout the United States. Graves uses the anti-ERA campaign in Georgia as a model for studying the women who opposed the ERA on a national level. She writes about the differences between the feminist movement and the conservative grassroots movement, the role that anti-ERA women played in the rise of the New Right, and the legacy of the ERA’s failure in contemporary political context. Graves uses interviews and primary resource documents of the women involved in the campaign as well as a plethora of scholarly materials previously written about the ERA.
