You're pretending, you don't need a wheelchair' - children and adolescents with spinal cord injury

Leeds, Marilyn June January 2001 (has links)
This thesis examines the requirements of children and adolescents with severe spinal cord injuries. The requirements are expressed by the parents of the children and by adolescents and are in contrast to official views of their 'needs'. There is no literature on the needs of these children and adolescents. The thesis thus begins with a examination of the literature on the needs of people with disabilities and people with spinal cord injury. Proponents of the social model of disability, which is based on the experiences of people with disabilities, contend that the main requirements of people with disabilities is ending their social marginalisation, and it is hypothesised that the requirements of the children and adolescents will be related to ending social marginalisation. Open-ended unstructured interviews with parents, parents and adolescents and adolescents alone ( a total of 20 interviews) provided data for analysis. Analysis of the data shows that the requirements of the children and adolescents, like adults with spinal cord injuries, differ from those of people with disabilities in that there are important concerns in addition to marginalisation.

Increasing Accurate Set Up of Assistive Technology Devices by Teaching with Behavioral Skills Training

Clarke, Amie 01 August 2011 (has links)
The purpose of paper is to describe a rationale for training staff who work with others with disabilities to use Assistive Technology devices. Current literature describes reasons that Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices are not used based on cost, satisfaction, and difficulty in evaluation. Devices are often abandoned due to ineffective training and increased response effort to operate the device. Previous research on training others to use AT devices is reviewed. A popular behavioral perspective continues to be Behavioral Skills Training. By comparing BST to other common methods of device set up, the current study demonstrates the effectiveness of a BST package.

In this context arises the stigma of the physically challenged, part of a group that escapes the normal standards of society and nature. And this difference in the scholar journey becomes more evident creating a social imbalance, which the teaching practices try to minimize through the proposal of inclusion. The suggested researches about inclusive education point out the experiences of regular teachers and students with and without physical disabilities who attend the same scholar environment. Facing this reality from another angle, how those relationships present themselves when the teacher is physically challenged? There are few studies documenting these experiences. This research aims to fill this gap, based on the trajectory of a physically challenged teacher's training, who works in higher education, together with interviews of two other teachers in higher education, also physically challenged, through the following categories: trajectory in basic education, access and retention in higher education, access to employment market, access and action as a teacher for education and inclusion. The objective is, therefore, to establish a reflection about the professional inclusion, facing the difficulties encountered daily in school. In the attempt to explain the characteristics and attributes of individuals with disabilities in contact with normal people, it was used statistical support as theoretical basis, specifically from the normal curve combined with the historical and legislative trajectory regarding the subject. Therefore, the study aims to contribute to the development of an inclusive culture, promoting the normality of the differences.(AU) / Convivemos natural e socialmente com as diferenças, mesmo que de forma não apreendida, não aparente.

A decorrência desta realidade é posta, a seguir, na direção de respectivas conclusões: projeta-se que os coeficientes de incidência da doença colocam reptos econômicos e sanitários a desafiar desde o modelo neoliberal de organização societária e mundial até competências específicas das ações das equipes de saúde em campo / Abstract: Physical Disabilities in Leprosy (PDL) were taken as the central object of study with the aim of investigating whether, in the present day, they are a thing of the past or a problem of the future. Using as a starting point the vast variety of academic reading material and documents from Brazilian and international organizations dedicated to the epidemiology and control of leprosy, a specific study of physical disabilities was attempted within the material. The methodological reconstruction used was that of a qualitative nature, based on bibliographic review and content analysis techniques. The latter were employed in a documental, categorical, frequential, contingential format, in compliance with the appropriate and pertinent bases. One of the main tendencies of PDLs which was repeatedly observed was the official acknowledgement of the importance of which they are deserving, in contrast to the priority conferred on them in terms of decisions, investments, and practices. These elements have concentrated their knowledge and actions on the direct bacillary action inside and outside the human organism, allowing, as a consequence, significant room for non-governmental organizations and similar associations to act on the rehabilitative aspects of the disease. This incursion into the macro-analytical plane of the past is complemented by a critical review that proceeds to more strictly applied dimensions of PDL to contemporary issues of body and movement. The occurrence of this reality then leads towards the respective conclusions: it is projected that the levels of incidence of the disease constitute economic and sanitary challenges that defy issues ranging from the neoliberal model of societal and world organization to specific competencies of the field actions of health teams / Doutorado / Doutor em Educação Física

No. of bitstreams: 1 Josyvanda Basilio Russo.pdf: 359440 bytes, checksum: 9a067ad00596167169db45952b2b2d9c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The aim of this study consisted of identifying the difficulties that teachers have faced in daily classroom and how they have evaluated their performance of teaching students with physical disabilities. The research was conducted with twenty-seven teachers from two schools in the São Paulo city. In order to achieve the proposed objective, this research was developed in a theoretical qualitative methodology, with quantitative outlines, through bibliographical literature, documentary analysis and interviews. A survey with structured questions and focus group interview were utilized as tools which enabling to develop topics that became themselves into thematic cores. The tabulated and classified data were subjected to content analysis. As revealed by the research, is not the college degree enough to prepare the teacher to deal with the perspective on inclusive education, that is why teachers have had difficulties in taking actions to help students with physical disabilities, which requires a differentiated education or specific resources, to learn. This is the main obstacle to the proposal of inclusion and one of the biggest challenges to the inclusive education. Therefore, in order to change this framework, new actions from public policies are required so that a partnership between public education and health services can be formed, aiming at a training that provides them a deeper theory and practice. This paper reached its proposed aims and its content demonstrates the complexity and breadth of the subject, so that it is impossible to exhaust it in its dimensions, identifying indicators that enable the continuity of the researches with teachers on interdisciplinary proposals to provide teaching and learning opportunities for all.

Views and experiences of children with disabilities and their parents regarding school attendance

Kuaka, Kennedy Born January 2010 (has links)
Master of Science / A number of children with physical disabilities are not attending school in Zambia, despite the endorsement of the 1996 by UNESCO “Education Our Future” that provides children with disabilities the right to be educated with their peers in public schools. The aim of the study was to explore the views and experiences of children with physical disabilities and their parents towards school attendance of children with disabilities. The study setting was in Mazabuka, Zambia. The study population was children with physical disabilities who were not attending school and their parents. A sample of 19 participants was purposefully selected. A qualitative approach was used to explore the participants‟ attitudes, cultural beliefs, and challenges related to school attendance of children with physical disabilities. A content analysis approach was used for data analysis after translating and transcribing raw data from Tonga into English. The data were coded, categorized and themes of the content identified. Ethical procedures included, obtaining permission from the University of Western Cape, the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services in Zambia and Rural Health Centre. Signed consent from parents, consent from parents stating that their children can participate and assent from children was obtained. Anonymity and confidentiality of participants was emphasized and participants were reminded that their participation was voluntary. Participants had the freedom to withdraw without any prejudice. The results indicated positive attitudes of children and their parents towards school attendance of children with disabilities. The traditional and religious beliefs of parents did not influence or contribute to children with disabilities not attending school. The main reason why most children with physical disabilities were not attending school in Mazabuka district was due to physical and social barriers. / South Africa

The feelings of people with physical disabilities regarding discrimination in Tembisa

Leshilo, W M 09 November 2004 (has links)
The aim of the study was to explore and describe the feelings of people with physical disabilities regarding discrimination in the community of Tembisa. Discrimination against people with physical disabilities is one of the major problems affecting the larger society, impacting on their lives. The exploratory and descriptive designs were used because of insufficient information available on this topic particularly in Tembisa and to describe the feelings of people with disabilities regarding discrimination. A semi-structured interview schedule was used as a data-gathering instrument. The study was conducted among people with physical disabilities who are clients of the organisation Association for Physically Disabled (APD). Ten respondents were then selected following a purposive non-probability sampling method. The study revealed that most people with physical disabilities experience difficulty in accessing some of the public buildings in Tembisa as they are not wheelchair friendly. Housing for people with disabilities was also raised as another problem experienced by people with disabilities in general. The findings further proved that not much has been done regarding inclusion of people with disabilities by employing them in the open labour market. In conclusion, it has been proved that people with disabilities feel isolated, rejected, marginalised and stigmatised in the community of Tembisa by their able-bodied counterparts. Recommendations are provided regarding how people with disabilities can be included in Tembisa and mainstream society. / Dissertation (MA(Social Work)(Health Care))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Social Work / unrestricted

Leisure functioning of learners with learning and physical disabilities : a case study at an ELSEN school in the Tshwane area

de Swardt, Junita 20 August 2008 (has links)
Nationally and internationally the integration of people with disabilities into mainstream society is gaining attention. Leisure and sport play important roles in this integration process. Few services and opportunities, however, exist for people with disabilities to participate equally in society. It seems that recreation providers focus primarily on recreation programs for able-bodied people in communities. These inequalities are realized. It is also documented in the National Sport and Recreation Act (1998) that the development of sport and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities is important. Due to the numerous health benefits of leisure participation, lifelong participation needs to be encouraged when leisure opportunities are developed and implemented in communities. It is important that people with disabilities derive maximum benefit from sport and recreation involvement to ensure continued participation throughout the lifespan. Individuals derive maximum benefits from sport and recreation activity involvement when they perceive freedom during these activities. These activities range from athletics and soccer to chess and art. “Perceived freedom” is the central indicator of leisure functioning. Freedom can only be experienced when the learners with physical and learning disabilities experience satisfactory levels of leisure competence, control during leisure activities, needs satisfaction and depth of involvement as components of leisure functioning. The following hypothesis was formulated for the study: “Leisure functioning of learners with learning and physical disabilities does not contribute to an independent leisure lifestyle”. The aims of this study were to determine the following components of leisure functioning through the use of the standardised Leisure Diagnostic Battery (LDB):

leisure competence of learners;

being able to control the process and outcomes of leisure participation ;

needs satisfaction and

depth of involvement in leisure activities.

Data collected in this study were processed by means of quantitative research. Research methods included an external environmental analysis (literature reviews), an internal environmental analysis (internal policies and programs and interview), and a questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of learners (38%) with physical and learning disabilities at an ELSEN (Education for Learners with Special Education Needs) School in Tshwane. It was found that learners at the ELSEN School had an 85% (63.73/75) leisure functioning rate. The learners with learning disabilities had a slightly higher leisure functioning rate of 85.32% (63.99/75) than the learners with physical disabilities with an 84.27% (63.2/75) rate. The high level of leisure functioning indicated that the learners perceived high levels of freedom during their leisure participation at the school. The formulated hypothesis could therefore not be accepted. The leisure functioning of the learners are high and should therefore contribute to an independent leisure lifestyle. In order to utilize the full potential of the leisure activities at the school the following aspects are suggested for further research:

In order to increase leisure participation at the school, constraints hindering participation need to be determined.

Assessment of a broader base of learners (including all the grades) would be recommended for further planning of programs and activities.

/ Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Biokinetics, Sport and Leisure Sciences / unrestricted

The welfare state in Sweden is govern by the politicians who sets regulations of the processing aids, though the municipalities is autonomous which state in the individual’s rights can be affected as the municipalities follow their own regula-tions. The professionals shall guide the individual to right accessibility aid through a needs assessment and strive after the individual’s independence. The goal is to enable the individual experiencing participation, independent life and the opportunity for an active life which is a part of the criteria for human rights. The individual should be heard in order to have the opportunity to participate in society as everyone else. A contributing factor to participation can be right adapted accessibility aid in form of a wheelchair that fulfills the individual’s need. The individual should have more options in the procured accessibility aid assortment which should be offered and not restricted by inter alia the municipal-ity. As society is constantly changing, the accessibility aid production should follow the development of society and produce products with Universal design i.e. products that enables more applications.The study was based on a semi-structured interview with six participants. Based on the study, it appeared that the representatives considered that the provision of assistive technology could increase the individual's empowerment and contribute to society. The representatives relate to the human rights and laws of society and the workplace as well as the professional knowledge. It can be emphasized that further research was needed in the area of recreational aids.
