Processutveckling av förslagsverksamheten vid GKN Aerospace Sweden

Ahlgren, Rikard, Dörrich, Wictor January 2015 (has links)
The business world is constantly subject to intense competition that requires continuous development of products, personnel and operations within the company. The development towards a better state comes at the expense of strict requirements in job descriptions where continuous improvement is part of the working role of individuals. In order to link the continuous improvement of the business well-being, there is a need of structured work for improvement in ways of a well-functioning suggestion scheme. Suggestion schemes main purpose is to utilize the experience and knowledge of all employees by encouraging individuals' skills and creativity, which will contribute with innovative and competitive suggestions. Personnel is a resource that covers particular knowledge that no other company can copy; therefore it should be utilized to the maximum extent possible. The aim of the project is to identify and specify improvement measures for the suggestion scheme at GKN Aerospace Sweden AB in Trollhättan. The work consisted of an initial literature review, which included direct and indirect factors effecting the continuous improvement with linkage to the proposed suggestion scheme. In order to concretize the theoretical framework of the tools main purpose for the continuous improvement, a theoretical and a practical benchmarking was utilized. The company's current suggestion scheme was mapped and analyzed, and a foundation for future improvements was established.GKN Aerospace Sweden is part of the GKN Group, which operates in more than 30 countries around the world and employs about 50 000 individuals. The company manufactures components for aircraft and rocket engines, as well as service and maintenance. In the current situation GKN Aerospace manages a suggestion scheme that depends entirely on an internal IT system and has an average lead time of 43 weeks until a decision is made. The reward system for received suggestions is an economic reimbursement calculated through a complex formula. The entire suggestion scheme process is extensive and includes several loops for conducting the evaluation of suggestions. The thesis resulted in improvement propositions based on studies and situation analysis, but differs from the expected target to improve and develop the current system. The problem that arose was that the current system does not support the company's expectations for the suggestion scheme process. It resulted in a completely new system with associated procedures and reward guidelines were developed to create incentives and higher motivation for the submission of suggestions for improvement. The improvement propositions resulted in: dedicated time for improvements, group-based activities for continuous improvements, start-up meetings, new process, basis for the development of a new IT system, economic and symbolic rewards.Date: 2015-

Busch, Erik 08 April 2022 (has links)
Objective: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death. The gold standard for their diagnosis and treatment are angiographic procedures. Clinicians rely on dedicated and specialized equipment for these interventions, e.g. angiography systems. The speed of the associated development is important as better technology enables progress in treatment methods and clinical outcomes. The goal of this article is to show how to optimize the innovation and development process such that it takes minimal time. Methods: 672 data sets on 302 topics were collected over 47 months during a long-term observation of the innovation and development process of angiographic systems. The total data collected is equivalent to efforts worth 30 man-years. This input was used to calculate key process parameters, analyse key process roles, evaluate the use of problem-solving methods and identify key technologies. We also developed a process model comprising the primary innovation sources, important input providers and key processes. This model is characterized by a continuous loop for the innovation and development process. Results: The conducted literature research identifies this closed loop process model as being unique in comparison to the well-established models proposed by Brockhoff, Cooper, Crawford, Durfee, Ebert, Eppinger, Hughes, Pleschak, Thom, Ulrich, Vahs and Witt. According to the best knowledge of the authors no comparable data collection has been performed and presented anywhere else yet. When analysing our 672 data sets, we found that the median process time ( in this data pool (n=672) was to be 10 weeks (p<0,05). The median number of task owners (xPA) per task across all topics was 2. Our data revealed that the number of task owners had a direct impact on the process time. For data sets with up to eight task owners the relationship between process time and task owners can be described as tPd=3.6*xPA^1.4. The median time of owning a topic was determined for Sales (7 weeks), Service (11 weeks), Customer Relationship Management (6 weeks), Product Lifecycle Management (10 weeks) and Research & Development (11 weeks). Main input providers were Sales (53%) and customers (28%). Sales (42%) and PLM (37%) are significant connectors. Problem solvers are PLM (35%), CRM (27%) and R&D (27%). The problem-solving methods were analysed and it was found that clarification (77%) as well as dialog and variation method (both 50%) were used most often. We found that changes to the application software (33%), mechanics, device interfaces and user interface (all 21%) are the four out of six components that were involved in most often. In the analysed datasets a potential of an up to 20% shorter process time was identified. Conclusion: This article proposes a new model for the innovation and development process. Based on our data, we recommend to apply a continuous loop process in the context of innovation and development of medical devices. Our results can, for example, be used for Activity Based Costing Approach or be applied to bring new or upgraded angiography systems faster to market benefitting patient outcome due to improved diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Material Development for Electron Beam-based Powder Bed Fusion

Sjöström, William January 2024 (has links)
Electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF-EB) is an additivemanufacturing (AM) method based on layer-by-layer melting of apowder bed. The technology is industrialized in certain applicationsbut still considered as immature and is not as widely used as laserbeam-based systems (PBF-LB). PBF-EB can offer several benefits overPBF-LB such as process cleanliness, thermal efficiency, fast beam speed, higher power and energy transfer, low residual stresses in built partsand a good signal environment for process monitoring. This can beadded on top of the general benefits of AM such as geometricalfreedom, manufacturing efficiency, easy design revisions, short leadtimes and so on. This suggests that PBF-EB holds potential as atechnology for the sustainable production of materials andcomponents. This thesis investigates how PBF-EB can be furtherdeveloped to create new and unique materials features. This isachieved by introducing innovative methods for material processingand by further developing the PBF-EB process itself. The thesisintroduces a charge-free heating method for PBF-EB and the resultssuggest an enhanced processability of difficult-to-process materialsand powders. A method for building multi-materials in PBF-EB isintroduced and demonstrated by the manufacturing of direct andlamellar transitions between different alloys. Methods for processmonitoring and powder bed resistivity evaluation are proposed andxiidemonstrated. It is concluded that the results presented in this thesisenabled new PBF-EB processing modes, increased the knowledge ofthe process, and introduced a new material group by demonstratingthat ceramics can be processed at high temperatures (~1600C). At the time of the defence the following papers were unpublished: paper 2 and paper 4 (submitted).</p>

Operational performance driven production system design process

Islam, Md Hasibul January 2022 (has links)
The design process of a production system referred to as the production system design process (PSDP) impacts on the operational performancethroughout the lifecycle of the production system, especially on the rampupand operation phases. Despite the impact of activities of PSDP on the operational performance, how to manage the PSDP is still a challenge for manufacturing companies. Earlier research urged to develop a systematic PSDP concerning its impact on the operational performance. This thesis aims to contribute with knowledge of how manufacturingcompanies can manage the PSDP by investigating 1) the enablers in thePSDP that impact on operational performance in ramp-up and operation phases, and 2) how the lean production concept could be adopted tomanage the activities during the PSDP. A case study was conducted in aprocess type manufacturing company, where empirical data were collectedfrom three new production line launching projects by qualitative means. This thesis identifies a set of enablers in the PSDP that potentiallyimpact the operational performance after launching the productionsystem. Empirical findings demonstrate that ensuring proper actions onthe identified enablers in the PSDP could lead to higher operationalperformance of the designed production system. These enablers rangefrom the company´s internal boundary to external vendors, requiring asystematic way to manage these diverse aspects. Adopting the lean production concept in the PSDP context, this thesis proposes a model of Lean Production System Design Process, containing 13 principles andrelevant practices. The proposed model of lean PSDP could be used as a systematic processto manage the activities in the PSDP that would ensure proper actions related to the identified enablers. Empirical findings indicate that adoptionof lean in the PSDP could result in reducing lead time of launching a new production system, and achieving fast ramp-up and desired operational performance considering sustainability aspects. Finally, this thesis demonstrates how the lean PSDP could be a means to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage based on the resource based view theoretical perspective.

Integration of Advanced Product Quality Planning in Quality Preparation for an Original Equipment Manufacturer in the Automotive Industry : A Case Study at Volvo Group Trucks Operations Powertrain Production in Skövde

Gertsson, Hanna, Lindberg, Henrik January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the development of Volvo Group Trucks Operations Powertrain Production (Volvo GTO PTP) in Skövde, focusing on the implementation of processes for new products intended for both internal and external customers. Previously, the company solely supplied products within the Volvo Group, functioning as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). With the opportunity to adhere to the supplier-specific quality standard IATF 16949:2016, an extension of the ISO 9001:2015 quality standard. Volvo GTO PTP aims to enhance product and process development through the adoption of the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) method. Unlike the existing project models, Develop Product and Aftermarket Product Portfolio (DVP) and Project Steering Model (PSM), used by Volvo GTO PTP, the APQP method validates product and process development together.   This study investigates the relationship between the current project models, DVP and PSM, and the APQP model, identifying areas within APQP that require further development. Interviews and thematic analysis were conducted to assess the current state of APQP, with an evaluation matrix employed for quantitative analysis. Findings reveal a knowledge gap within Volvo GTO PTP, wherein comprehension of APQP activities and their correlation with DVP and PSM is lacking. Critical activities for execution and management within the APQP model include measurement system analysis (MSA), checking aids, records of customer-specific requirements, part submission warrant, and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP). Furthermore, organizational culture-related deficiencies contribute to the difficulties in adopting a holistic project perspective due to siloed working practices.    The integration of APQP in the existing project models is recommended to Volvo GTO PTP in Skövde, as many APQP activities are already established or easily implementable. This integration facilitates the clear definition and demonstration of interplay between different project models, clarifying deliveries and the release of product and process development. To avoid reactive approaches to problem management, it is advisable to explicitly define responsibility for risk management and activities within the APQP model. The demand for APQP activities emphasizes their interconnectedness and creates a natural flow within the project model, contributing to an improved organizational culture and understanding of APQP. Ultimately, the APQP model establishes favorable conditions for reducing quality-related costs during the introduction of new products and product changes, ensuring appropriate preparedness in quality management. Compliance with IATF 16949:2016 also offers Volvo GTO PTP in Skövde the opportunity to obtain certification.

Monteringsstation för verktygstavlor : Konstruktion och framtagning av monteringsinstruktion / Assembling station for tool boards : Construction and production of assembly instructions

Audo, Sandra, Eriksson, Pontus January 2018 (has links)
This thesis project has been carried out with Husmuttern AB as the requestor for the job. Husmuttern AB is a company in the start-up phase which works with developing module houses which are recyclable, disassemblable and standardized. The goal for the thesis project is to design an assembly station for mobile tool boards in a Husmuttern factory. There should also be instructions for the assembly station. The tool boards are used as storage for tools, safety equipment and more. The station must be usable for people without professional experience and regardless of language knowledge and background. The research questions are: * How should the instructions be designed so that a person regardless of language background can understand them? * What are the most important factors regarding ergonomics and protection against misassembly? The method used is based on the product development process described in Produktutveckling by Ulrich, K and Eppinger, S (2012), but adapted to the current project. To obtain a complete tool board one needs to place all hooks and other storage on the board and thereafter mount the boards to legs to make it mobile. To make sure that all hooks, nuts, etc. are placed correctly, installation templates are used to show where everything needs to be placed. A fixture is used for the legs, where one stands the legs, installs the boards in the correct order and uses screws to secure them. The instructions are in the shape of a Powerpoint presentation which is displayed on TV monitors in the factory. The instructions contain pictures and video showing every step of the assembly. There are also symbols, like for example arrows, pointing out important details which need to be observed. The instructions contain no current text, the only writing is numbers, which the workers are expected to understand. The project group has carried out tests with the workers in the factory. The tests have shown that the concept works. The installation templates combined with the instructions makes it easy for the workers to understand where everything needs to be placed. The fixture for the legs has not been tested with the workers in its final form, but the concept has been tested and is working satisfactorily.

Nisar, Asim January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is about product and process development. The thesis has been done at ABB Robotics AB in Västerås under 20 weeks with half study pace, which is equivalent to 15 higher education credits (15hp). Thesis purpose was to improve an assembly station for assembling of robot IRB 360. Problems at the assembly station are that there are some non-value-creating activities and assembling methods which correspond to low safety factor for workers. The focus of thesis was to investigate opportunities and to produce solid proposals for how to eliminate these problems. After a written contract with ABB AB, the work started with the planning with the company supervisor and Gantt Schema was created to schedule all steps for this project, to ensure during the process. The project has followed the methods described in the book "Produktutveckling konstruktion och design " by Karl T Ulrich &amp; Steven D Eppinger. Product development tools like Quality function deployment (QFD), functional analysis, specification of requirement and Pugh's analysis matrix have been used in the development process. In the first phase of the project, observation and investigation has been performed to identify and analyse problems. In the later phases, ideas and concepts has created to solve the problems and achieve successful results. The result of the project is an improved material flow at assembling stations which eliminates nonvalue-creating activities and leads to better safety for workers. Another result of the project is an elimination of hand hammering at assembling station and for this purpose a new pressing tool has been developed for pressing down a seals around radial shaft in assembling process. The software Solidworks has been used to create a new 3D layout for the existing assembly station to understand and find the better solution for material flow. Solidworks is also used for doing Finite element method (FEM) analysis to validate the new developed pressing tool. / Detta examensarbete handlar om produkt och processutveckling. MiniPharm: A Miniaturized Pharmaceutical Process Development and Manufacturing Platform

Jaron ShaRard Mackey (14230133) 07 December 2022 (has links)
<p>  </p> <p>In the pharmaceutical industry, special care must be taken by companies to guarantee high quality medications that are free from byproducts and impurities. The development process involves various considerations including solvent selection, solubility screening, unit operation selection, environmental, and health impact evaluations. Traditionally, pharmaceutical manufacturing consisted of large, centralized facilities to meet pharmaceutical demands; however, there has been a recent shift toward distributed manufacturing. With distributed manufacturing platforms, rapidly changing supply chain needs can be met regionally in addition to supplying small-volume medications and personalized medicines to hospitals and pharmacies. To produce quality pharmaceuticals, distributed manufacturing platforms should integrate digital design, novel unit operations, and process analytical technology (PAT) tools for quality monitoring and control. In this dissertation, a process design and development framework is proposed and implemented for a small-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing platform: MiniPharm.</p> <p>Various approaches to process design are detailed in this dissertation, which include heuristic-based and digital or simulation-based design. For heuristic-based design, the knowledge of the researchers was utilized to provide unit operation evaluation and screening of process alternatives. In cases when unit operations were highly complex, digital or simulation-based design was utilized to conduct sensitivity analyses and simulation-based design of experiments. With the implementation of simulation-based design, material and time needs were reduced while gaining knowledge about the system. The integration of various unit operations comes with increased understanding of start-up dynamics and operational constraints. What was found to be the most successful approach was the combination of heuristics and digital design to combine researcher knowledge and experience with the information gained from process modeling and simulation to create process alternatives that utilized system dynamics to reach desired process outcomes. </p> <p>Additionally, MiniPharm was used for process model development at the small-scale. Various software packages have been made commercially available that focus on production scale; however, models for small-scale operations are not typically implemented in these packages. Models for unit operations were fit with collected experimental data to estimate model parameters for small-scale synthesis, liquid-liquid extraction, and crystallization unit operations. The models were implemented to better capture the heat and mass transfer of the milli-fluidic scale platform, which consist of unit operations housed within microchannels. MATLAB was utilized for estimation of parameters such as kinetic rate constants and overall mass transfer coefficients. These parameters were used for design space determination and process disturbance simulation. The exploration of the impact of various process parameters on quality attributes helps researchers gain a deeper understanding about the manufacturing process and helps to demonstrate how to control the process. </p> <p>An important aspect of MiniPharm is the process development progress that has been demonstrated. With the construction of a modular and reconfigurable platform, various process alternatives can now be experimentally validated. The integration of unit operations operated at a decreased scale makes MiniPharm an example of process intensification. The implementation of integrated unit operations decreases handling time of intermediates and reduces the overall footprint for manufacturing. Designed to allow for increased flexibility of operation, perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA) tubing was used for synthesis and purification. With PFA tubing clean in place procedures can be implemented using continuous solvent flow or the low cost, PFA tubing can be replaced. The modular nature of the platform also allows for the investigation of individual unit operations for performance evaluation. </p> <p>Finally, a novel continuous solvent switch distillation unit operation was designed and constructed along with customized reactor and crystallizers for process alternative screening for the synthesis and purification of two compounds: Diphenhydramine hydrochloride and Lomustine. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is a low-value, high volume allergy medication commonly found in Benadryl and Lomustine is a high-value, low volume cancer medication used to treat glioblastoma and Hodgkin Lymphoma. The production of the compounds demonstrated the flexibility of the manufacturing platform to produce both a generic and a specialty medication. A versatile platform is needed for distributed manufacturing because of quickly changing supply chain needs. Overall, this dissertation successfully demonstrates the process design, development, and simulation for small-scale manufacturing.</p>

Kabroo, Carl Gustaf, Willenius, Robert January 2013 (has links)
The thesis in product development – design was carried out between February and June 2013 and includes 15 credits (C-level), and is the final course of the Bachelor Program in Engineering, Innovation and Product Design.  The thesis dealt with the problem of adaptation to production and cost optimization of two pieces of electromagnetic stirrers at the company ABB, Process Automation, Metallurgy in Västerås. After contact with the supervisor from ABB, Jan-Erik Eriksson, the project work commenced to adapt the manufacturing design of the product ORD 43P and EM Stabilizer. To achieve cost-optimized production and production adapted design, the authors applied the following product development tools: Design for Cost, Design for Manufacture and Design for Assembly. To verify that the design was optimal, but also that it did not break during stress, the authors used the computer based module finite element method of the CAD program SolidWorks.  The selection of components was based on the component’s price per kilo.  To select the optimum material, that is high strength and affordable, the authors used the material database software CES EduPack. The materials selected from CES EduPack could not be found by the authors as standard material at the market. Therefore, the authors changed strategy to compare and select materials based on market research of standard materials with suppliers. The components of ORD 43P were optimized in terms of design in comparison with existing components coil bracket and insulation boards. They were also cost reduced significantly. The component frame base was examined briefly.  Through product development the components coil bracket, insulating boards and frame base the total cost of ORD 43P was reduced by 2,47 %.  The authors found that the total cost of ORD 43P could be reduced between 10-25 % as many of its components are oversized and made of more expensive materials than needed.  The components of EM Stabilizer, cover and pneumatic hose, were designed with optimum design and was cost reduced.Through product development the components cover and pneumatic hose the costs of EM stabilizer were reduced by 1,3 %.  The authors assume that the costs of the EM Stabilizer can be reduced, because it is relatively new at the market. ABB want to ensure that the product reach its guaranteed life by over-sizing many of the components of the product and use more expensive material than necessary. / Kostnadssänkningsprojekt
