Behind training : differentiation of self of a psychotherapy trainee

Van der Merwe, Sasja 02 October 2013 (has links)
Psychotherapy is an interpersonal encounter where a therapist collaborates with clients to facilitate a healing process. Due to the personal nature of the therapeutic encounter, the therapist requires the necessary skills and knowledge, as well as a differentiated sense of self. The importance of supporting the psychotherapy trainee’s own differentiation process seemed to have been neglected in research in recent years. In South Africa there has recently been increasing pressure to select larger groups of trainees which has the risk that the tending to differentiation would further be neglected. The purpose of this research study is to reemphasise the importance of differentiation of self of the psychotherapy trainee by examining my own process of differentiation during my psychotherapy training. This study introduces the reader to these concepts and explores psychotherapy training in general and the Unisa training method specifically. The research design of this study is autoethnography which falls in the realm of social constructionism and the coding method is Thematic Data Analysis. The research findings as reflected in the two global themes namely individuation; and gaining and strengthening authentic relationships, seem to accurately reflect the process of differentiation. The specific training method of the Unisa training team in combination with the way in which I engaged with this process seemed important for the facilitation of this process of differentiation. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Its objectives are the study and analysis of the relation of theory in the movement of approximation of this work; dialogue on the contributions and difficulties of these professionals; the view of interdisciplinarity in the interface between Social Work and Psychology, including divergences and results. The methodology included theoretical studies and qualitative, descriptive and analytical research, based on the theoretical-methodological framework of historical-dialectical materialism. The technique used was that of the focal group, which had as one of the criteria the choice of people who share the same place of work; the reports / experiences; the necessities; the values; meanings; challenges; and elements of the chosen theme. The study included the participation of four psychologists and six social workers, professionals from three different CRAS units from Lins/SP city. The participatory methodology, through the collection of information obtained from the respondents, aimed to know and analyze social work with families in the daily life of social workers and psychologists in CRAS units; to redeem the conceptions, meanings, perspectives, divergences, conclusions and challenges identified in the intervention. The results point to the need to overcome the family tendency in inclusion in social policy. In this sense, it is considered necessary the exercise of a preventive social policy and of investment, that promote the right to the familiar coexistence, aspect pointed out by the members of the research, for improvements in relation to the effective vigilance; interdisciplinary teamwork (networking); the systematic, organized, continuous and joint attendance to the families, considering the diagnosis of the territory; the training and updating that promote professional clarity and autonomy, with the guarantee of sufficient technical staff. The final considerations include the challenges and the need to strengthen the coexistence services, as a priority, the home service for the elderly; the achievement of established goals by the social policy, a clear guideline in the methodological procedure within the services for the management work in the CRAS units; and conceptual innovations about family and social policy / O objeto desta tese é o trabalho com famílias realizado a partir de ações cotidianas dos profissionais assistentes sociais e psicólogos em unidades do Centro de Referência de Assistência Social (Cras). A metodologia compreendeu estudos teóricos e pesquisa qualitativa, descritiva e analítica, a partir do referencial teórico-metodológico do materialismo histórico-dialético.

It is inserted, therefore, into a particular moment of the psychologist s academic development, which takes effect by means of the clinical care given to children, in the context of the psychodiagnosis. The research at issue, based on the discarding of the positivist view and the adoption of an epistemological paradigm which favors intersubjectivity, is structured according to a complex architecture, to the extent that clinical care and supervision are viewed as inseparable practices. 16 reports on the use of the Procedure, drawn up during a two-month period, along of which 16 undergraduates made twenty-four complete psychodiagnoses, were psychoanalytically evaluated, in close dialogue with the Winnicottian thought. Two of such reports are fully presented in the research. The analyses, on the whole, allow us to conclude that the transitional use of the Thematic Story-drawing Procedure seems to be heuristically important since it favors meaningful emotional communications among all the people involved in the interaction, in the contexts of the care provided for the children and the supervision provided for the students.

The context is the city of Teresina, capital city of Piau? state, which is peripheral in Brazil s northeast region. The defiance here is to build a critical psychological tradition that will deal with the challenges imposed by the reality of poverty and socio-economic backwardness of the region. The greatest difficulty is the lack of a public institution of learning that carries out instruction, research and extension with commitment to social transformation, and with the production of a psychological knowledge that is able to understand local reality. I take it that the undergraduate course in Psychology at UESPI [State University of Piau?] is the only one in Teresina that can take over such mission. The query is confronting violence against children and adolescents that defies us to ethically and politically commit to solidarity toward fragile human beings in need of adult involvement in order to survive this daily inhumanity. The involvement of psychologists from Teresina in this must result from a social commitment and a technical competence to deal with prevention and therapeutic consideration toward the victims. This dissertation is divided into three parts: the first is a study on the curriculum and the performance of psychologists, which revises the academic output in Brazil and envisages new queries to the theme, such as the role of teaching inside the curriculum, and presents social security (including Medicare) as the privileged field in which Brazilian psychologists perform. The second part contains a study on the concepts of childhood, adolescence and violence, which presents a consideration on the strategies to confront violence against children and adolescents. Nine psychologists, who work in three different large cities of the State of S?o Paulo, participated in the study, eight women and one man. The researcher invited each one of them for a dialogical encounter. Following each encounter, the researcher wrote a comprehensive narrative containing the main elements, which emerged from the participants? lived experience, apprehended by the researcher through an intersubjective movement. After this, the researcher created a synthesis narrative, presenting some significant elements of participants? lived experience as a whole. From this synthesis narrative, it was possible to describe the structure of the experience in focus in the study. It was concluded that: 1) the multidisciplinary team doesn?t always recognize the importance of the psychologist?s presence in the team, which requires him to break barriers; 2) there is a daily overload of demands on the psychologist due to the team member?s and institution?s manager?s incomprehension about his role; 3) the psychologist tries to contribute to the team?s care to patients in order to fulfill Brazilian?s unified health system principle of integral care; 4) attitudes such as empathic comprehension and unconditional positive regard characterize psychologist?s role towards patients, their relatives and team members; 5) a trustful and complicity relationship among multidisciplinary teams? diverse specialists is crucial to certify a well-functioning team; 6) due to the service?s demands, the psychologist feels the need to take care of himself, emotionally, in order to be able to effectively perform his role in the team; and 7) a well qualified Psychology under graduation training, as well as a major in Hospital Psychology, are pointed as necessary for a proficient practice within a hospital multidisciplinary team.

Alfaro Inzunza, Jaime 31 January 2013 (has links)
This study investigates the relationship between community psychology and social policies, seeking to determine which contextual conditions, institutional and interaction of actors help to explain the form and structure of the technical field of the psychologists that work in social intervention in the General Social or Community Services as part of the Spanish Social Services Systems. As a methodological framework, we use the Strauss & Corbin (2002) approach known as Grounded Theory, and also the Coller (2000) multidimensional multiple cases. We study five General Social Services, trough twenty-four interviews to professionals, members and managers of these services, town hall and autonomous community managers and external agents, representatives of professional associations and academics concerned with the issue. As a result, we observe that the integration process of the psychologists that work with social interventions and the components of their field are explained in the context of three major sets of conditions: in first place, the institutional conditions arising from the legal-regulatory bodies and their impact on the technical, management and administration framework. Second, the actor’s interaction processes around reflection dynamics, training and definition of perspectives and frameworks of intervention, all of them developed in negotiations and alliances between the experts, politicians, leaders of the professional associations and academics.

Perceptions that social workers and occupational health nurses in the Pietermaritzburg region have, of clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and priests.

Bhagwandeen, Yuraisha Bianca. January 1998 (has links)
This study involved an investigation of the perceptions that social workers and occupational health nurses have, of clinical and counselling psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and priests. The present study includes a sample of social workers and occupational health nurses in the Pietermaritzburg region. Subjects were required to i) rate their confidence in the ability of each of these professionals to treat 5 clinical cases, ii) rate their confidence in each of the professionals to help them with their own problems iii) rate each of the 5 cases in terms of the severity of each case, iv) rate each of these practitioners on 11 personal qualities developed by Webb and Speer (1986), and v) choose from a list of 10 professions the one they would like their off-spring to persue. Repeated measures anovas, Tukey's HSD test, and descriptive statistics, were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that the sample i) was moderately confident in the abilities of psychologists to treat 5 cases ii) was moderately confident in the abilities of psychologists to treat their own problems, iii) rated case 3 as being most severe and psychiatrists as being more competent to treat this 'severe' case, iv) rated psychologists quite favourably in terms of personal qualities, and chose engineers and accountants above psychologists. Further analysis revealed that in certain instances, the sample appeared to have a preference for counselling psychologists over clinical psychologists, and rated mental health professionals more favourably than non-mental health professionals. The results also indicated that the sample appeared to lack clarity about the roles, functions and skills of psychologists. Implications for the job security of psychologists, and the need for educational and public relations efforts are discussed. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.
