School belonging : listening to the voices of secondary school students who have undergone managed moves

Craggs, Holly January 2016 (has links)
A sense of school belonging has a powerful effect on students' emotional, motivational and academic functioning. This phenomenological research synthesized qualitative literature presenting pupil voice on school belonging, investigated how secondary school-aged students who have undergone a 'managed move' experience belonging, and sought their views on the role stakeholders might play in promoting school belonging for managed move students. The author discusses policy and practice implications and outlines a dissemination strategy. The first paper is an interpretative meta-synthesis involving a process of reciprocal translation and synthesis of seven qualitative studies was used to examine secondary school students' experiences of school belonging. The second paper is an empirical study investigating how secondary school students who have undergone a managed move experience school belonging, and what they feel would promote a sense of school belonging for other managed move students. This research employed purposive sampling, an interpretative case study design and semi-structured phenomenological interviews. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyse data. The meta-synthesis (Paper 1) generated four main concepts: school belonging and intersubjectivity; school belonging and knowledge, understanding and acceptance of individual identity; school belonging and experiences of in-group membership and school belonging and safety/security, and the 'higher-order concept' of school belonging as 'feeling safe to be yourself in and through relationships with others in the school setting'. Superordinate themes identified in the empirical study (Paper 2) were 'making friends and feeling safe'; 'feeling known, understood and accepted as a person in receiver school'; 'identification of and support for SEN/D' and 'supportive/unsupportive school practices/protocols'. Findings indicated that a sense of school belonging for these students resulted from positive social relationships with peers and an attendant sense of safety, security and acceptance. Managed move participants expressed the desirability but also the perceived difficulty of forging relationships in a new school and acknowledged the value of sensitive and subtle support.

Silva, Francisco José da January 2010 (has links)
The goal of this study is to discuss in(equalities) between public schools from two administrative regions of the Federal District through cost-per-pupil and tangible conditions of education. Cost-per-pupil is defined as the set of material and human resources which are objectively calculated. Tangible conditions are defined as the set of material goods and human resources which area obtained subjectively within the actual school setting. The sample is composed of twelve basic education public schools from kindergarten to high school (preschool; elementary school; intermediate school; middle school; high school; and special education), six schools from the Brasília Administrative Region (AR-Brasília) and six schools from the Samambaia Administrative Region (AR-Samambaia). Data was also collected from two different schools which are located in the AR-Brasília (Brasília Centre of Languages -BCL and Brasília Park School – BPS). The overalls costs of these two schools are defined as additional-cost to school (ACS). Items of cost in this research are: personnel salaries (classroom teachers and all additional staff including professional and nonprofessional support staff); supplies; equipment; others (contracted workers; utility bills [water/sewage; electricity; gas; telephone; broad band internet]); building structure; and land. Personnel salaries and equipment were collected inside each school and all others through official documents/budget review (government guidelines from the Secretary of Education of the Federal District; Land Official Report of the Federal District of 2008; engineering budget reports from new school buildings). This investigation also collected data through semi-structured observations and many informal dialogues with teachers, non-professionals, students, and parents from all sample schools. This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter presents the concept of cost and terms that are related to it. The second chapter shows a literature review of cost-per-pupil in Brazil, in the Federal District, and in the United States of America in which basic information about each reviewed study are presented, such as: title; author(s); type of publication (research report; book; survey; thesis; dissertation; monograph, etc); year of the data collection and the publication) goal(s); items of cost; type of cost (direct, indirect, etc.); methodological procedures; peculiarities; and main results. The third chapter approaches some concepts from François Dubet, Amartya Sen, and John Rawls, and indicates possible theoretical links with the main categories of this dissertation (cost-per-pupil and the tangible conditions of education). The fourth chapter in turn exposes the methodology in detail. This chapter intends to explain the elected options and their means of implementation, especially those related to data collection. Finally, the fifth chapter, data is presented and analyzed. Some results of this research: the cost-per-pupil is relatively high in both administrative regions; the cost-per-pupil in Brasília is higher than in Samambaia in all levels; deficient material resources are a reality in both regions.

The Deliberate Speed of the Tar Heel State: North Carolina’s Efforts to Resist School Desegregation, 1954-1966

Cash, Patrick S 01 August 2014 (has links)
The Deliberate Speed of the Tar Heel State offers readers an examination of the efforts undertaken by North Carolina in hope of resisting public school desegregation between the Brown v. Board decisions of 1954, 1955, and 1966. It will examine the state’s use of a series of legal, legislative maneuvers, The Pupil Assignment Act of 1955 and the Pearsall Plan of 1956, which attempted to show definitive progress to the federal government while simultaneously ensuring the segregated public school system remained intact. By examining the efforts of individuals such as William Umstead, Luther Hodges, Terry Sanford, Thomas Pearsall, and others, this thesis will analyze how North Carolina attempted to use more “moderate” means of resisting federally mandated school desegregation and whether the state was successful in their efforts.

Factors contributing to absenteeism of pupil nurses in the nursing schools of Capricorn District, Limpopo

Thobakgale, Ellen Mokgobola January 2013 (has links)
Thesis (M.Cur) --University of Limpopo, 2013 / This study was aimed at determining the factors that contributed to absenteeism of pupil nurses in the nursing schools of Capricorn district in Limpopo Province. A descriptive cross-sectional quantitative design was used to describe factors that contributed to absenteeism of pupil nurses in the nursing schools of Capricorn district. The target population consisted of 124 pupil nurses at two nursing schools in the Capricorn district. Ten pupil nurses from one nursing school were used in a pilot study, but for the main study 114 nurses from both nursing schools were sampled. Systematic sampling was used to select 57 pupil nurses who participated in the study. Data were collected by means of a self-developed questionnaire that comprised 24 items on teaching, course content, learning, assessment and social problems. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 18) was used for data analysis. Validity and reliability were ensured by using Cronbach’s test on the pilot study. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Medunsa Research and Ethics Committee, and permission to conduct the study was granted by the Department of Health and Social Development, Limpopo Province. The findings of the study revealed that teaching, course content, learning environment, assessment and social problems were contributory factors to absenteeism of pupil nurses in the nursing schools of the Capricorn district in the Limpopo Province. The study further showed that pupil nurses were absent from classroom and clinical settings due to fear of assessment and attending to social problems. The study recommended the redesigning of nursing education and training in the Capricorn district of the Limpopo Province. The study proposed that appropriate and innovative teaching strategies and support systems be established for pupil nurses.

As cores como fator para expressão emocional em dicromatas e tricomatas / Not informed by the author

Marques, Igor de Oliveira 12 December 2018 (has links)
Feedback from the pupil diameter and eyetracker are influenced by what we see. In the presente work we studied the eyes behavior by gazing eyetracker and pupil diameter in dichromats and thichromats using as a tool visual stimulus that were taken from the IAPS photos database, and the emotional reactions were measured from these people by using the SAM, in the three dimensions of emotions, valence, arousal and dominance. The aim of this study was to observe how the emotional content of photos can be mediate by colors and provoke emotinal reaction on these people. We compared the answears from 10 trichromats with the answears from 10 congenitol trichromats. The three dimensions of emotions and the eye movements are diferent between dichromats and thricomats in posivite photos. Valence and pupil diameter in colourful neutral photos between dichromat and trichromat are different. Valence and arousal in negative photos are different between dichromat and trichromat. Eyetracking in positive photos are different between dichromat and trichromat. Valence and arousal are different in dichromat regarding the neutral photos. Dominance, saccadic movements and unclassified movements were different in positive photos to the trichromats. Valence in negative and neutral photos are different beetween dichromat and trichromat. The colours can influence differently on the way dichromat and trichromat people react to the visual stimulus

The relationship between pupil control ideology and subject faculties in ACT government high schools

Myers, Ian, n/a January 1985 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to establish that a relationship existed between teacher Pupil Control Ideology (PCI) and membership of a practical subject faculty or of a humanities subject faculty in ACT government high schools. It was hypothesized that teachers in practical subject faculties and teachers of practical subjects would be custodial in their PCI. Teachers in humanities subject faculties and teachers of humanities subjects would be humanistic in their PCI. A subsidiary purpose was to replicate earlier research findings of a relationship between PCI and years of teaching, sex, position in the school administration, and type of school. The PCI Form was administered to a population sample of 116 teachers from five high schools in the Belconnen area of Canberra. The results were subjected to t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Statistically significant relationships were observed between PCI and teacher variables of subject faculty, subject taught, and sex of teacher. Earlier findings for other variables were not replicated. The direction of findings was surprising. Teachers in practical subject faculties and of practical subjects were more humanistic than humanities faculty and subject teachers. Female teachers were more custodial than male teachers. An analysis of variance showed no interaction effect between variables sex and faculty, and sex and subject taught. More research on possible causes of the relationships, such as student attitude to subject, and teacher sense of achievement, is needed before the findings can have practical application.

Att bli behandlad som luft : En empirisk studie om elevers uppfattningar av kränkning i skolan / To be treated like you don´t exist : An emperical study about pupils conceptions of violation in school

Johansson, Jill, Salomonsson, Annette January 2003 (has links)

Andersson, Kerstin, Lundgren, Ingegerd January 2005 (has links)

/
Our investigation treats learning by reading and reading comprehension. On the basis of a pedagogues and a pupils perspective we have investigated the concept of reading comprehension, what it means to know how to read and understand a text, which prerequisite it demands and how learning take place around this. As a starting point to our investigation we have use different research perspectives on learning by reading and touching different learning by reading methods. Through qualitative interviews with pedagogues and pupils we have investigate their understanding about how you learn to read by yourself and what it means for your reading comprehension. The results have given us knowledge of that the pedagogue should be sensitive and support the pupil with different tools, because the pedagogue must help the pupil in their reading evolution. We mean that it would facilitate if pedagogue and pupil are active in learning by reading.
