Alfons+Milla=Sant : En studie om hur heteronormen reproduceras i två Alfonsböcker / Alfons+Milla=True : A studie about how the heterosexual norms are reproduced in two of the books about AlfonsKorn, Caroline, Ellerstad, Jeanette January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate if and how the picture book about Alfons Åberg express gender stereotypes and sexuality, through its images and texts. That is because it is one of the most borrowed books in Swedish libraries and also there fore could be a book that is especially common i Swedish preschools. The books about Alfons has also played a major role in Swedish cultural history and the Swedish history of literature, and are known as a part of the swedish heritage. Since children books are well used in Swedish preschools and because children often are left alone to read, we wondered what kind of gender norms the books of Alfons could express to the preschool children. There- fore the aim of this study is to investigate how gender norms are expressed in two of the Alfons books in the book series. The survey was conducted through qualitative picture book analysis which is inspired by former text and image analysis. The theoretical method to investigate how gender norms were expressed was gender theory. We also used discourse analysis and social constructivism as a base, which means that the norms are defined as a social construction that are under constant transformation. The results show that sex, gender and sexuality are interacting in the books of Alfons Åberg. The characters in the book expressed that sex and gender norms were expressed by separation of male and female. The separation find out to be a way to show that opposites also expect to attract each other. The conclusion was that sex, gender and heterosexuality were linked together as a normative exclusion of other sexualitys as inpossible.

Sticking It to the Man by Standing by Your Man: Social Support as an Act of ResistanceWallace, Andrew Middleton 16 May 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to synthesize literatures on stress, social support, symbolic interaction, and de Certeau as they pertain to the recovery of a homosexually-identified individual from a homophobic interaction. A model of the initial stressful interaction as well as the interaction between a homosexually-identified individual and his socially-supportive network is posited with the consumption of culturally-disseminated roles and the salience of role-identities as the mechanisms by which it works. The model is then considered as a form of resistance in the light of broader gay liberation social movements. The study focuses on white, middle-class, American, homosexually-identified males in order to control for variations that might occur from variables of race, class, nationality, and gender. Queer theoretical, essentialist, and postpositivist realist perspectives on identity are considered. The thesis concludes with possible future directions for an empirical study using the model outlined above.

Measure of a Man: A Grounded Theory Approach to Understanding Gay/Queer College Men’s Self Identified MasculinityHenne, Ryan Jasen 16 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop an understanding of the role that masculinity has in identity development among self-identified Gay/Queer (GQ) collegiate men. The goal of this study was to develop a theory that explains how traditional college-age GQ men view masculinity within the context of their performance as men on a college campus. 16 college-aged GQ men attending a four-year, private liberal arts institution in the southeastern United States were the subjects in this study. The participants consisted of: two first year students, three sophomores, two juniors, eights seniors, and one individual that who had graduated from college six weeks prior to his interview. Individuals that identified as woman, or transgender students were not included in this study.
Four themes were identified from the study: Creating Identity & Exploring Sexuality; Reliance of Stereotypes; Performance & Presence; and Community Expectations & Acceptance. The overarching concept that emerged from the study was that whatever qualities the participant found to be personally attracted were the same traits that he found to be the most masculine. Limitations and recommendations for the study were also provided.

Psychanalyse, homosexualités et théories queer / Psychanalyse, homosexualities and queer theoriesBrunel, Francois-Marie 21 June 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to confront psychoanalysis and U.S queer theories. Queer theorists are ambivalent towards psychoanalysis. For many authors, psychoanalysis is very useful to deconstruct gender, think about homosexualities, transgenderism and various sexual practices. They criticize egopsychology and uncover Freud’s work subversive aspects. Besides, some Lacanian aspects of the reading of Freud which are particularly innovative are unknown, such as Lacan’s theorization of masculine and feminine sexuations. Queer theorists are siding with masculine sexuation, ignoring feminine jouissance. It is obvious that queer theorists' reading has a strong utopian dimension, aiming for a political revolution of the society. More generally, it is the dimension of the real in the Lacanian sense which is unknown and ignored, and, because of that, the singular way in which the subject's body is affected by sexuality.

[en] A QUEER CRITIQUE ON JURIDICAL TREATMENT OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE AND GENDER REASSIGNMENT ON BRAZIL / [pt] UMA CRÍTICA QUEER AO TRATAMENTO JURÍDICO DO CASAMENTO IGUALITÁRIO E DA MUDANÇA DE SEXO NO BRASILJOSE VAUGHAN JENNINGS HOLANDA LICINIO 17 October 2014 (has links)
[pt] Sob a influência do lesbianismo radical, do feminismo radical e do repúdio
desigual perante a lei.
[en] Under influence of radical lesbianism, radical feminism and Foucault s
rejection to the repressive hypothesis of sexuality, the queer theory has
developed as a critique to hegemonic discourses of gender identity. In facing
medical-psychiatric reports considering pathological the various non-heterosexual
behaviors, the queer theory seeks to destabilize current notions about gender that
comprehend it on an essentialist way. The queer point of view allows an analysis
on legal regulation of gay, lesbian and transgender status in Brazil, pointing out
inconsistencies in this regulation and its most harmful effects that are unprotection
and unequal treatment to these people before the law. Two cases seem greatly
highlight the queer criticism: the same-sex marriage and the legal regime of
gender reassignment. The scope of this work is to combine the thought of the
authors Eve Sedgwick and Judith Butler, that are considered precursors of the
queer theory, in order to explain inconsistencies in the legal treatment of LGBTI
Brazilian population, especially with regard to the possibility of marriage and
gender reassignment.

[en] IF HE S A QUARTERBACK, THEN SO AM I: A RESEARCH ON HOMOSSEXUAL CO-PARENTING / [pt] SE ELE É ARTILHEIRO, EU TAMBÉM QUERO SAIR DO BANCO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE A CO-PARENTALIDADE HOMOSSEXUALALBERTO CARNEIRO BARBOSA DE SOUZA 04 June 2008 (has links)
[en] The liquidity of modernity and the plastic sexuality have both produced the reinvention of the family. Nowadays, it is the divorce and not death that separates the couples. Thus, the main enhancements to build up a family tend to be affection and the search for completude. The same process is familiar with
parenting and that s why family ties are no longer defined by blood knots alone. Therefore, the inevitable visibility within social Brazilian scenario of the gay parenting family structure is easy to be seen. These families are the object of our research: parents who call themselves homosexuals, who experienced a previous heterosexual relationship, make up their minds to start their lives from scratch with same sex companions. Nevertheless, our focus will not remain on parents, but the companions of these parents. So as to reach our aim we have selected three homosexual male couples, all of the interior of the state of the Rio de Janeiro, ranging from 19 to 31 years of age with children from 7 to 10 years old. We interviewed
both members of the couple, in order to try to better understand the subjectivity of the companion without children: what do these men think, since they have had their lives suddenly transformed and start coexisting with their companions children? What are their main expectations and anguishes? Should the fact of observing their boyfriends parenthood bursts out the parenthood desire? Who is eligible for which home chores? This questioning led us to organize semi-structured interview questions and through an
analysis of speech, reach the following categories: coparenting, desire for a biological son from the coparental experience, relation of the couple with the children and prejudice. The homosexuality stigma seems to crush hard on them and they state that this is due to the fact of not having constituted a family in
the heterssexual standards, contrasting with the reality of his partners. The queer theory, that has also helped us in our research, suggests that cristalized identities should be re-evaluated, if you see them
from a post-idenity point of view.

Quem é homossexual carrega consigo o fardo do preconceito: violências contra adolescentes e jovens homossexuais e a rede de apoio social / \"Those who are homosexual carry the burden of prejudice\": violence against adolescents and young homosexuals and the social support networkBraga, Iara Falleiros 17 March 2017 (has links)
When assuming that the network and social support are able to strengthen the protective factors that guarantee the rights of adolescents and young people; as well as responding better to the complexity of the demands brought about by violence; this study aimed to understand the situations of violence experienced by adolescents and young homosexuals and their social support network, in the Queer analytical perspective. Qualitative study, carried out in the city of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo in Brazil. The Group of participants consisted of 12 teenagers and youths, aged between 14 and 24 years old, whose erotic interests and/or practices involve others of the same sex. The data was collected through a semi-structured interview and the construction of Network Maps. Data was analyzed according to the assumptions of the method of interpretation and directions based on the concepts covered by the Queer Theory. From the analysis of the data four sense cores were identified: 1. experience of violence suffered: \"homosexual who appears to be homosexual, will carry the burden of prejudice, discrimination to death\"; 2. Experiences of coming out of the \"closet\": \"he said I was crazy, said I was not sane, that I wasn\'t very sure\"; 3. Masculinities and Femininities: \"the boys suffer more, you had to show your manhood, have to exhale masculinity\" and 4. Network and Social support: \"the greatest source of support are the friends who are homosexuals, because we identified with each other since we are going through similar problems\". The results show that there is the perpetuation of a hetero-normative and violent culture, that sanctions the punishment of dissidents of heterosexual norm, and adolescents and young people who do not follow the linearity between sex, gender, desire and sexual practices, the more they break it, the more they will be subalternized, being subjected to various types of violence in private and public spaces. These situations are enhanced by the lack of access to services and support institutions. They are people (female figures, friends and distinguished professionals), which are recognized as the main sources of social support to the participants. Health services, despite having been activated by some participants, were not sufficient to deal with the violence and with the promotion of health. It is concluded that there was uncertainty in the social network access and execution of their support, because, their composition and articulation was not efficient in combating the violence suffered. Given this, the need of professionals who will deal with this population, especially teachers, health teams and social assistance were pointed out, being prepared for the reception, care, guidance to families, strengthening of family links and referral of cases of violence, favoring the deconstruction of the hetero-normative and homophobic stances in pursuit of the implementation of the rights of adolescents and young homossexuals

Signo da diversidade: narrativa e compreensão jornalística com pessoas LGBT / Sign of Diversity: narrative and journalistic understanding with LGBT communityGonçalves, Gean Oliveira 14 September 2017 (has links)
Conflicts around gender oppression and the human dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) have redefined contemporary behavior and social dialogue. In the last decades, journalistic narratives capture with greater intensity the human, public and political character of issues of sexual and gender diversity. However, the difficulty that journalists encounter in working out relationships with LGBT people because of the cultural construction of gender they have is remarkable, but not only that. It is in this context that this dissertation rehearses a knowledge about the role of the journalist (the social mediator) in creating paths of understanding, solidarity and recognition for others, especially, with the LGBT community. It was developed a cultural analysis of the narrative of three book reports written by brazilian women: O Nascimento de Joicy, by Fabiana Moraes; Muito Prazer - Vozes da Diversidade, by Karla Lima and Entre a Cruz e o Arco-íris, by Marília de Camargo César. The theoretical and methodological course includes a dialogue with thinkers of gender and sexuality studies, mostly with the ideas of the Queer Theory. There are also contributions of complexity, sensitivity and affection in Cremilda Medina and other communication theorists. Finally, the author-journalists are heard, and notions of alterity are made, which can be a possible path of enchantment, discovery, curiosity and, above all, respect for the Other.

Rhizomes, parasites, folds and trees : systems of thought in medieval French and Catalan literary textsGutt, Blake Ajax January 2018 (has links)
This thesis investigates conceptual networks —systems of organising, understanding and explaining thought and knowledge— and the ways in which they underlie both text and its mise en page across a range of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century French and Catalan literary texts and their manuscript witnesses. Each of the three chapters explores a separate corpus of texts, using two of four interrelated network theories: Michel Serres’ notion of parasites and hosts as the basic interconnecting units that combine to constitute all relational networks; the ubiquitous organizational tree; Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the fold as the primary factor in producing differentiation and identity; and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s unruly, anti-hierarchical and anti-arborescent rhizomatic systems. The first chapter engages primarily with parasites and trees; the second with trees and folds; and the third with folds and rhizomes. However, resonances with the other network theories are discussed as they occur, in order to demonstrate the fundamentally interconnected and often interchangeable nature of these systems. Each chapter includes close analysis of manuscript witnesses of the texts under discussion. The first chapter, ‘Saints Denis and Fanuel: Parasitism and Arborescence on the Manuscript Page’, examines parasitic and arboreal networks in two hagiographic texts: late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century prose redactions of the Vie de Saint Denis, and the thirteenth‐century hagiographic romance Li Romanz de Saint Fanuel. The second chapter, ‘Ramon Llull’s Folding Forests: The World, the Tree and the Book’, addresses arborescent and folding structures in Llull’s encyclopaedic Arbre de ciència [Tree of Science], composed between 1295 and 1296. The third chapter, ‘Transgender Genealogy: Turning, Folding and Crossing Gender’, considers three characters in medieval French texts who can be read as transgender: Saint Fanuel; the King of Torelore in Aucassin et Nicolette; and Blanchandin/e in Tristan de Nanteuil. The chapter explores the ways in which these characters’ queer trajectories can be understood through conceptions of directionality which relate to the fold and the rhizome.

This study is an analysis of the performances carried out by character Katylene Beezmarcky on the eponymous blog and on Twitter. Thus, the study approaches the new technologies as devices that reconfigure the gender performances in contemporaneity. Also, think up communication technologies as ways of mobilizing cultural traits of different groups as a strategy to build a narrative of self in cyberspace. The objective is to observe the uses of different communication platforms (blog and Twitter) by blogger Daniel Carvalho for creating the transvestite character, contextualizing the popularization of character in a contradictory context of great homophobia characteristic of Brazil. The research seeks to articulate notions of gender performativity and matrix heterosexist norms, referring to queer theory, with studies on digital technologies and computer-mediated communication, cyberculture. In developing of the survey, firstly, discusses the socio-cultural notions with regard to genders, sexualities and sexes, then it is considered three key moments of cultural studies of gender: those who sought to explain the submission of women, those who relativize notions hitherto constructed and queer theory. Thus, by adopting a queer perspective, deconstructs the essentialist notion of gender and explain the gender performativity and how this will bring an heteronormative matrix. In a second step, some considerations are made about cyberculture and its implications in the construction of identities in contemporary times. To then approach the object of study so based on Grounded Theory. Thus, identified strategies and uses of online platforms as gender performances and mobilization of identity traits in the construction of a narrative of the studied character. It is perceived that the character has a close relationship with the spaces propitiated by the internet, using much of the material available online. Furthermore, it sets itself up as a trans character of the universe, but not in the same way, Katylene extrapolates becoming something like the stereotype of transvestite.
