Throughout this work it is possible to notice that there is a conspicuous diversity of family patterns and that the historical experience of the African ascendance, the results of black captivity, and especially the matrifocality in their family patterns were and still are remarkable boundaries. This work aims to run through the ways of the construction of the black family throughout historical data and contemporary analysis which connect this debate to the one of gender relations. The theoretical choice for this study is based on the approaches about gender identity and racial identity, and also on the approach given by the Social Sciences as they deal with family relations. AN EXAMINATION OF RELATIONS AMONG FEAR, GUILT, SELF-COMPASSION, AND MULTICULTURAL ATTITUDES IN WHITE ADULTS

Black, Whitney W. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Structural racism is often perpetuated by well-intentioned White individuals who passively accept or are unaware of its existence. However, when their perceptions and understanding of the world are challenged through learning about structural racism, White people may experience emotions such as fear, and guilt, which seem to serve either a debilitating or a motivating role in multicultural attitude development. Self-compassion, which is the ability to process distressing emotions without resorting to avoidance of the emotional experience, may help White individuals work through strong negative affect that accompanies an awareness of structural racism and ultimately aid in the development of multicultural attitudes. This hypothesized model of moderated mediation was tested using a sample of White adults (N = 240; 70.8% women, 26.3% men, 2.9% gender-expansive) who completed an online survey. Awareness of structural racism had a larger positive relationship with White guilt in individuals who endorsed lower levels of self-compassion. For individuals with high levels of self-compassion, more awareness of structural racism was associated with more fear, which in turn was associated with lower multicultural attitudes. For individuals with low levels of self-compassion, more awareness of structural racism was associated with less fear, which in turn was associated with more multicultural attitudes. Contrary to the theoretical model, the indirect effect of awareness of structural racism on multicultural attitudes through White guilt was not moderated by self-compassion. Implications and recommendations for research and practice in the field of counseling psychology are discussed.

Inside the Black Box of Mentoring: African-American Adolescents, Youth Mentoring, and Stereotype Threat Conditions

LaViscount, David F. 23 May 2019 (has links)
Despite a narrowing trend over the past forty years, the racial academic performance gap between non-Asian-American minority students and European-American students remains an overarching issue in K-12 schooling according to the Stanford Center for Education Policy Analysis (2017). Du Bois’s (1903) theory of double consciousness is implicated in the performance gap phenomenon. Though not explicitly connected, Steele and Aronson’s 1995 study revealed stereotype threat (STT) to be an empirical explanation of the negative impact of double consciousness. Steele et al.’s study revealed a psycho-social contributor to the racial academic performance gap, STT. STT is characterized by performance suppression caused by the fear of fulfilling a negative stereotype or the fear of being judged based on a negative stereotype attributed to one’s social identity group. The activation of this phenomenon is related to identity threatening cues, a systemic issue laden in the academic environment (Purdie-Vaughns, Steele, Davies, Ditlmann, & Crosby, 2008). To date, over 300 studies have been conducted on STT according to a meta-analysis conducted by Pennington, Heim, Levy, and Larkin (2016). Though certain experimental studies featuring mentoring as a vehicle for shifting stereotype narratives have yielded useful practices for STT reduction (Good et al., 2003), qualitative design, which is seldomly employed in the STT field, may produce an understanding of the phenomenon that is not possible through a deductive approach (Ezzy, 2002; van Kaam, 1966). The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore African-American adolescent student perceptions of the impact that mentoring has on their schooling experiences while under STT conditions. The findings of this study demonstrated that African-American adolescents perceived mentoring to positively impact their schooling experiences and helped them to cope with STT activating cues in the environment. The participants discussed structural aspects of the relationships, personality attributes of the mentor, and specific mentor guidance. Participants also discussed a documented STT intervention that fell outside of the parameters of their mentoring relationships that positively impacted their schooling experiences and abilities to cope with STT cues – affirmations (Cohen, Garcia, Apfel, & Master, 2006; Walton et al., 2012). Recommendations for practice and future research are presented.

Negotiating Race-Related Tensions: How White Educational Leaders Recognize, Confront, and Dialogue about Race and Racism

Samuels, Amy Jo 01 January 2013 (has links)
Despite exposure of educational disparities for students of color, as well as the notion that educational training rarely discusses race and racism, there continues to be a lack of discourse on race, racism, and anti-racism in educational leadership. Subsequently, it is important to challenge deficit thinking and encourage further examination of the deeply-rooted foundation of oppression. The study explored personal narratives of white educational leaders who oppose racial inequity to heighten awareness about conceptualizations of race, racism, and anti-racism. The research involved interviewing educational leaders in three groups: 1) aspiring, 2) currently-practicing, and 3) recently-retired. Eight participants were selected to engage in two semi-structured interviews about their experiences aligned with the following research questions: 1) How do white educational leaders frame the impact of race and racism? and 2) How do white educational leaders describe their perceptions and experiences recognizing, confronting, and dialoguing with others about race and racism? The findings revealed commonalties about the subtle nature of racism, as well as how to confront racism through thoughts and actions. While participants considered dialogue beneficial in their own awareness of race and racism, the lack of venues to dialogue were emphasized. The findings suggest implications for further contextualizing negotiations of race-related tensions and framing the impact of race and racism, particularly in relation to creating purposeful spaces and relationships to encourage such dialogue. Additionally, interpretation of the findings adds insight to further conceptualizing racial identity models and anti-racism.

Moments of realization : the experiences, development, motivations and actions of student social justice allies

Owney, Catherine Sanders 09 February 2011 (has links)
Social justice allies make important contributions to fighting oppression in campus environments and in their communities after college. However, knowledge of how one becomes a social justice ally is limited. This qualitative, phenomenological study was designed in an effort to better understand the social justice ally development process and advances the pioneering work of Broido (1997, 2000). Examination of student’s understanding of her/his formative and college experiences helped determine how each alone and in combination with other factors or experiences, contributed to her/his ally development process. The role of student affairs professionals and programs in this process was also examined. This study was conducted at The University of Texas at Austin, which was selected because of the historical context, institutional environment and diversity-related initiatives implemented over the past 10 years. Review of the literature on ally development reveals that a majority of the existing research focuses on allies who take action against heterosexism or sexism. Through this research project I addressed this gap by including student allies who focus on other areas of privilege/oppression including classism and citizenship status. This study also expands the analysis of social justice allies by including examination of the influence of gender on the development, motivations and actions of allies. / text

Dynamique identitaire et partitions sociales : le cas de l'identité "raciale" des noirs en france / Identity dynamics and social partitions : the case of identity "racial" Blacks in France

Perrin, Caroline 12 December 2011 (has links)
Our research work investigates - from a psycho-social point of view - the «racial» identity of the black population in France, notably in their relation with the white population, so as to point up the identity dynamics that exist between the various groups. The theoretical framework is related to social grouping and one of its developments, i.e. the concept of social partitioning. Such conception is based on the existence of several types of inter-category relations (partitioning) that allow apprehending the nature of individuals’ identity positioning within the framework of an inter-group relation and make it dynamic through the notion of co-construction. Our methodology is based mainly on mutual, i.e., inter-category representations (the representation one has of his/her category, of the exogroup(s)), leading to the definition of the identity dynamics that exist between groups with socio-cultural differences. In this perspective, a series of studies has been carried out. The first study demonstrated, the introduction of identity strategies different from the Antilleans blacks as they live in the Métropole or the Caribbean. The Antilleans of Métropole are part of a community partition, while those of the West Indies seem to adopt an avoidance strategy by a recategorized superordinate level. The second study shows that, depending on who addresses them (expressed by the inducing words «Black», «Blanc», «Beur») i.e., French persons of African or Antilleans origin, of European origin, or from the Maghreb, adopted a different identity positioning. Lastly, a third study highlights the existence of an implicit discrimination towards Black people in France, resting on a stereotype similar to that observed in The United States of America, but not explicitly mentioned. In general, these studies demonstrate that the apprehension of inter-ethnical relations expressed in terms of partition (rather than simply in terms of endo-favoritism or exo-defavoritism) and thus help us understand the relationships that exist between various communities in an intra-national context.

Salvador

Starting from the assumption that the peripheral soirees would build positive meanings for Black and peripheral identities, we made: a literature review, in order to build a theoretical framework, as well as getting materials published about and for the movement; an ethnographic- inspired research in São Paulo’s poetry sessions, based on systematic observations, whose information was organized in field diaries; semi-structured interviews with 19 activists from three peripheral poetry sessions – Palmarino, Elo da Corrente and Poesia na Brasa –; interviews with the author and poet Fuzzil and, with two participantsof these mentioned soirees; and, finally, we conducted thematic analysis and a triangulation ofinformation to identify the analysis units. We found that the poetry sessions are part of a power struggle arena, which plead-meanings. Through this movement, it is given visibility to the Black bodies and audience to the discourses produced to vent the anguish arising from transit through non-place and the desire to be subject in the first person. The literature thus functions as a vehicle to unveil up topics and deleted elements, and to emphasize other appropriate senses to objects whose meanings were historically negative. The curly hair, maroon origins, the link with the periphery etc. become symbolic benefits. Forge up artistic intellectuals and policies references, oriented for challenging the exclusion landmarks imposed to the outskirts and Blacks, as well as for the production of positive speeches and representations endogenously. By turning into rhymes the stratagems of racism, the nature of Black hair, the rejection to adhere to socially ascribed patterns to Black, and the stories and the desires for overruns, Black protagonists arehighlighted, representing them as holders and producers of knowledge. In this context, literature is armament and poets begin to produce it, in a engaged way to the racial question. We conclude that the research data support our hypothesis. We point out the importance of studies that: I) pay attention to the role of Black women poets (minority) in the peripheral poetic circuit; and II) seek to identify the differences and similarities between contemporary poetic movements of Africa and the Black Diaspora.
