Examining One Traditional Classroom and One Progressive Classroom for the At-Risk Middle School Student: A Case Study of Two Rural Redesign Programs

Taylor, Alvin Centrell 30 April 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact that the creation of programs or instructional strategies that were devised and designed solely for the purpose of improving academic achievement among at-risk students has on the at-risk middle school student. In this case study, educational success from school redesign programs was qualitatively measured based upon an oriental inquiry-based qualitative research design. The data obtained for this study were derived from interviews, observations, and archival documents. The data collected for this study were intended to address the following questions: (a) How do redesign programs support teachers? (b) How does the redesign program benefit middle school, at-risk students? (d) What challenges, at the school level, do teachers face in regard to redesign programs? The observations in this study revealed that the students‘ perceptions of the program were positive. The teacher inquiries in this study revealed that the vast majority of the students (after being in the program for at least a semester) stated that they would like to remain in the program and they also stressed concerns about whether they would have access to a similar program once they were promoted to high school.

Reimagining McKeldin Plaza, Baltimore, Maryland

Speedlin, David Arthur 29 June 2015 (has links)
This thesis focuses upon the redesign of McKeldin Plaza in Baltimore, MD. Situated beside the Inner Harbor and at the intersection of Pratt and Light Street, this occupies an important space in the city, functioning as a crossroads between several important urban landmarks. However, a reconfiguration of this plaza has become necessary due to the growth in traffic around the area, both automotive and pedestrian, as two 5-lane streets surrounding the plaza has left the site physically cut off from the Inner Harbor. Additionally, a beloved but under-functioning fountain awkwardly divides up the space, ultimately rendering the large plaza unused except the sidewalks at the edges. Through redesigning the street layout and traffic patterns, this thesis offers an alternative to the current scheme, one which offers a new connection to the Inner Harbor and an active, pedestrian-friendly space. In joining the plaza with the Harbor, a new urban nexus is created which seams together the upper and lower Inner Harbor. The redesign focuses on three key elements: a new fountain to pay homage to the old, bringing the harbor into the plaza, and creating spaces which are both accessible and inviting, yet astute in addressing functional and contextual needs. While maintaining some of the original qualities of the space, such as materiality and surrounding building footprints, this design also encompasses the addition of a new arcade in order to allow a greater flow between the interior, commercial and exterior, civic spaces. / Master of Architecture

A strategic planning methodology for aircraft redesign

Romli, Fairuz Izzuddin 06 April 2009 (has links)
Due to a progressive market shift to a customer-driven environment, the influence of engineering changes on the product's market success is becoming more prominent. This situation affects many long lead-time product industries including aircraft manufacturing. Derivative development has been the key strategy for many aircraft manufacturers to survive the competitive market and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Within this environment of design adaptation and variation, the main market advantages are often gained by the fastest aircraft manufacturers to develop and produce their range of market offerings without any costly mistakes. This realization creates an emphasis on the efficiency of the redesign process, particularly on the handling of engineering changes. However, most activities involved in the redesign process are supported either inefficiently or not at all by the current design methods and tools, primarily because they have been mostly developed to improve original product development. In view of this, the main goal of this research is to propose an aircraft redesign methodology that will act as a decision-making aid for aircraft designers in the change implementation planning of derivative developments. The proposed method, known as Strategic Planning of Engineering Changes (SPEC), combines the key elements of the product redesign planning and change management processes. Its application is aimed at reducing the redesign risks of derivative aircraft development, improving the detection of possible change effects propagation, increasing the efficiency of the change implementation planning and also reducing the costs and the time delays due to the redesign process. To address these challenges, four research areas have been identified: baseline assessment, change propagation prediction, change impact analysis and change implementation planning. Based on the established requirements for the redesign planning process, several methods and tools that are identified within these research areas have been abstracted and adapted into the proposed SPEC method to meet the research goals. The proposed SPEC method is shown to be promising in improving the overall efficiency of the derivative aircraft planning process through two notional aircraft system redesign case studies that are presented in this study.

4:R, Reuse, Repair, Redesign, Recycle : En studie om hur svenska mode och outdoor företag förhåller sig till de fyra hållbarhets metoderna / 4:R, Reuse, Repair, Redesign, Recycle : A study of how Swedish fashion and outdoor companies associate to the four sustainability strategies

Truong, Marc, Lindholm, Sebastian January 2021 (has links)
There are two kinds of business models: the linear and the circular. The linear model is based on make-use-dispose, while the circular model is looking for further strategies to reduce waste. Since the textile industry uses a lot of resources, the waste is calculated to be an astounding 92 million tons yearly and therefore circular economy is a crucial solution. There are several strategies for a business to act more circular. This study focuses on Reuse, Repair, Redesign & Recycling which all of them focuses on reducing the textile waste. The purpose of this study is to understand if Swedish fashion/outdoor companies use Reuse, Repair, Redesign & Recycling. The study will also research what kind of difficulties and possibilities working with these four strategies could potentially be. To examine the purpose of this study a triangulation method has been used. A survey has been conducted for 23 Swedish companies questioning if they work with Reuse, Repair, Redesign & Recycle. Interviews have also been performed with two companies. These two are using some out of the four strategies, which will act as a critical part for the comprehension of the challenges and opportunities. The result will present how many of the companies that work with sustainable solutions, which ones are the hardest to achieve and why. It will also present challenges and possibilities with these circular strategies. The results illustrate that Reuse and Repair are more common as a sustainable solution in the company's business models than Redesign and Recycle.

Modulating Enzyme Functions by Semi-Rational Redesign and Chemical Modifications : A Study on Mu-class Glutathione Transferases

Norrgård, Malena A January 2011 (has links)
Today, enzymes are extensively used for many industrial applications, this includes bulk and fine-chemical synthesis, pharmaceuticals and consumer products. Though Nature has perfected enzymes for many millions of years, they seldom reach industrial performance targets. Natural enzymes could benefit from protein redesign experiments to gain novel functions or optimize existing functions. Glutathione transferases (GSTs) are detoxification enzymes, they also display disparate functions. Two Mu-class GSTs, M1-1 and M2-2, are closely related but display dissimilar substrate selectivity profiles. Saturation mutagenesis of a previously recognized hypervariable amino acid in GST M2-2, generated twenty enzyme variants with altered substrate selectivity profiles, as well as modified thermostabilities and expressivities. This indicates an evolutionary significance; GST Mu-class enzymes could easily alter functions in a duplicate gene by a single-point mutation. To further identify residues responsible for substrate selectivity in the GST M2-2 active site, three residues were chosen for iterative saturation mutagenesis. Mutations in position10, identified as highly conserved, rendered enzyme variants with substrate selectivity profiles resembling that of specialist enzymes. Ile10 could be conserved to sustain the broad substrate acceptance displayed by GST Mu-class enzymes. Enzymes are constructed from primarily twenty amino acids, it is a reasonable assumption that expansion of the amino acid repertoire could result in functional properties that cannot be accomplished with the natural set of building blocks. A combination approach of site-directed mutagenesis and chemical modifications in GST M2-2 and GST M1-1 resulted in novel enzyme variants that displayed altered substrate selectivity patterns as well as improved enantioselectivities. The results presented in this thesis demonstrate the use of different protein redesign techniques to modulate various functions in Mu-class GSTs. These techniques could be useful in search of optimized enzyme variants for industrial targets. / biokemi och organisk kemi

Business Process Reengineering in public sector / Procesní řízení ve veřejné správě

Vacek, Antonín January 2010 (has links)
The main goal of this work is to create some kind of simple methodology that can help to improve effectiveness of public organizations. There're a lot of theories and methodologies focused on this topic and there is a good chance many new ones will be presented in the future. These came mainly from management field and sometimes from other fields as well. This work focuses mainly on Business Process Reengineering and combines it with other methodologies hoping, it will help in a process improvements in the public sector. Focus is on Czech Republic but this work should be useful to other countries as well, if necessary changes are made in order to shape things that are different between the countries. In this work, a whole project cycle of the public organization processes improvement project can be found, but some project phases will be explained in more detail then the other. Focus is on the analytic parts of the project (strategy creation, use of UML, BSC and other models and methodologies like that) rather than the project management parts of the project. All the practical examples are from public sector organization -- namely the administrative office of one of the city districts of Prague. After reading this work, reader should have moderate understanding of the application of a BPR methodology in the public sector and how it can be supported by other methodologies. There is also big portion of models and diagrams in this work showing pieces of reality from chosen public organization. Their meaning is to show what is usually done in this kind of project and how to understand the models. This works goal isn't creation of a guideline to UML or any other modeling principles.
