Barriers and Enablers for Repurposing Vehicle Components in Cross-Sector Collaborations : A Case Study of a Swedish Vehicle Manufacturer / Barriärer och möjliggörare för återbruk av fordonskomponenter i tvärsektoriella samarbeten : En fallstudie av en svensk fordonstillverkare

Kjellberg, Elin, Mirgati, Violet January 2023 (has links)
Sweden's economy is currently heavily dependent on a linear economy model, where raw material ultimately is discarded as waste. The linear approach is unsustainable for manufacturing companies in the long term. To embrace a sustainable business model and ensure future competitiveness, vehicle manufacturers are actively exploring alternative strategies to reduce emissions. To meet the emission reduction targets established by EU regulations, the industry is actively embracing the adoption of electrification and autonomous vehicles. However, the management of end-of-life for electric vehicles and waste has not kept pace with the industry's growth. To address these challenges, there is a growing recognition of the need to transition towards a circular economy, which focuses on eliminating waste, maximizing the value of materials, and promoting environmental regeneration. This study focuses on identifying the barriers, enablers and opportunities that support the implementation of circular economy strategies within a Swedish vehicle manufacturing company, specifically in the areas of Rethink, Remanufacture, and Repurpose. The research methodology involved conducting literature reviews and interviews with company representatives, research institutes, and external experts in relevant fields. Additionally, an internal survey was conducted to assess employee attitudes and knowledge regarding circular business and the selected strategies. Through the analysis, several barriers and opportunities emerged, including cross-sector collaboration, co-creation, circular design, technology, ownership models, regulations, and organisational considerations. The findings from the literature study, the survey and the interviews were used for the development of the conceptual framework Case Company Circularity Platform. The platform aims to foster cross-sector collaborations through Repurposing vehicle components on a digital platform. To validate the potential of the concept, workshops were conducted with potential customers. The feedback received from the potential customers provided valuable insights, enabling further research and refinement of the concept. The analysis highlights the importance of clear goal-setting and defining objectives within the organisation. It emphasizes the need for cross-sector collaboration, leveraging advanced technologies for component tracking and Repurposing throughout their lifecycle, implementing a Product-as-a-Service ownership model. To achieve the desired legislative changes that promote circular economy, the case company must demonstrate a strong commitment and unified approach alongside the industry. By embracing circular practices and advocating for legislative changes, the case company can play a leading role in promoting sustainability and setting new industry standards. Overall, Repurposing presents an exciting opportunity for the case company to contribute to the way towards a sustainable future.

Ampiify : Opening oportunities on outdated electronics

Oko Mambo-Matala, Ngatye-Brian January 2012 (has links)
The disposal of electronic waste is becoming one of the growing problems that the planet is facing. Tons of electronic waste is dumped illegally to 3rd world countries. Consequently the local people in those countries are exposed to levels of toxicity that could cause them serious diseases as well as the degradation on the natural ecosystems. The electronic waste is perceived as useless by our society, and this project aims to challenge that idea by looking at sustainable ways of manipulating electronics.

“This Great Building Belongs To Everyone”: Interrogating Claims About Inclusiveness and Exploring the Role of Nostalgia in the 1970s and 1980s Historic Preservation Movement at Union Station in Indianapolis, Indiana

Butterworth, Alexis Victoria 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Union Station is a unique historic building in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. The station, which first opened in 1853, has connected the history of the evolution of travel and the city of Indianapolis and, in the late twentieth century, became deeply embedded in local conversations about national issues at the intersection of race, historic preservation, and urban renewal. The station was a place of Black exclusion from public spaces throughout its existence, first as a train station, and later when it was repurposed as a Festival Marketplace. In preparation for the opening of the Festival Marketplace in the 1980s—complete with shops, restaurants, and a hotel—the developers invited people to write to them to preserve personal memories of experiences at the station from the era of train travel. Indiana residents, both white and Black, as well as Indianapolis city officials, and redevelopers of the station showed nostalgia for earlier eras when the station was active. This nostalgia, I argue, played an active and productive role in the process of saving Union Station. Importantly, those who contributed a letter to the “Remember Union Station” project were overwhelmingly white. Out of eighty-six letters, the race of seventy-three of them can be confirmed. Of those eighty-six, only two have been identified as Black. The two Black letter writers used the opportunity to contribute to the “Remember Union Station” campaign as a means to remember and claim the right to belong in Union Station for themselves, their families, and Black communities. As this project shows, the Indianapolis Union Station has always been more than just a building. It is a space that captures a part of the complex history of the city of Indianapolis and can hopefully provide more links to the past, present, and future for Hoosiers and visitors alike.

Strömbrytaren

Marteleur, Johanna January 2022 (has links)
My degree project has been about converting an existing old industrial building into a youth centre. The buildings core focus is culture together with activity and learning. I wanted to use as much material as possible from the old building. Exterior walls and flooring are left almost untouched while a big part of the buildings construction with roof is changed. I made a new roof that could be used as a park. The building is situated close to the city centre of Eskilstuna, aswell as close to the southern suburbs where problems with segregation is an issue. My vision with Strömbrytaren was to make it a social hub, where youth from different backgrounds would meet and socialize.

Repurposing Huddinge Town Hall - Rethinking the function and reusing the concrete frame structure of a 1960s office building

Kåreceus, Elin January 2022 (has links)
During the autumn of last year, Huddinge municipality made the decision to build a new town hall and leave their current premises in a couple of years. The current town hall consists of three parts and together they add historical annual rings and high architectural quality to this area, which has been an administrative center in Huddinge since the 13th century. However, as of today the future of these buildings is uncertain and the office building may now face the risk of demolition. This diploma project is therefore investigating how the office building can be repurposed to prolong its life and prevent 7500 tons of load-bearing concrete to go to waste. The new program is housing and 40 new apartments have been created. The existing courtyards have been opened up and the removed concrete, bricks, and windows are reused to add a new floor. In the new proposal, 84% of the load-bearing structure is original, 9% is reused and 7% is new. There is a large variety of apartments, ranging from 28 m2 to 129 m2 to enable diversity

Hornstulls Hemgård or A Search for a Third Place in Hornstulls Tunnelbana

Olasdotter Hallberg, Klara January 2022 (has links)
This project aims to explore how to repurpose a technical building into a public space, more specifically: Hornstulls Subway stations north entrance building into a Hemgård. The entrance building for Hornstulls subway station at Hornsbruksgatan, Södermalm is up for demolition. The building was designed by the style-forming architects Bengt Lindroos and Hans Borgström together with their college Nils Arne Rosén at Stockholms spårvägar in 1961-1964. Bengt Lindroos and Hans Borgström is also known for their design of Kaknästornet and Söderledskyrkan, both designed around the same time as Hornstulls Tunnelbana.  The building is built in brutalist style, typical for its time. A style both idealized and hated. But the trend of embracing these structures has been on the rise. Therefore, I find it unfounded, that in these times of sustainability and reuse, this strategy isn’t applied in this case. Especially since the building with its durability and robustness would suit a public use well. It is also economically beneficial for organizations and associations that never could have afford to erect a new building in the city center. The building's strategic location (being a subway station) will make the building easily accessible from all over Stockholm.  This project aims to explore one way of how this building can be preserved and reused instead of demolished. And a proposal for how one can add a public space to an already existing building.

MOTIVE through Automotive Compassionately Criticizing the Desires of Car Culture

Lehrmann, Erika R 20 December 2017 (has links)
My artwork represents my admiration and criticisms of car culture I have gathered throughout my personal experiences beginning at a very early age. The work exists in the form of drawings, paintings, prints, collage and sculpture. This work is created through the elements of personal narrative, desires, obsessions, and questions surrounding car culture and its influences. My intention to refurbish the icons of this culture has involved creating work that is both obsessive and critical for personal exploration and understanding of past memories.

UPPROP NITROLACK - A conversion of two industrial buildings  into a new public space for Lövholmen

Vasquez, Pazcal January 2022 (has links)
The former industrial area Called Lövholmen in Stockholm is in a state of transformation, it is about to open up to the public for the first time in over a hundred years. The idea from the municipality and the property owners is to develop a new housing area and a majority of the remaining buildings is planned to be demolished. The suggestion received a lot of criticism and has sparked local people to engage with the future of Lövholmen and an organisation was founded called FOCUS LÖVHOLMEN, UPPROP NITROLACK. When the demolition permit on Nitrolack factory was filed, Upprop Nitrolack started a petition to stop it and (together with other organisations and institutions) successfully appealed the permit for now.  This project aims to explore the transformation of an existing structure, in an attempt to repurpose and reconfigure a structure in an ever-evolving urban context and to accept change as a part of creation. Two former industrial buildings in a typical post industrial site is set to be transformed into a new public space for Lövholmen. The project aims to discuss a series of questions:  -How can Nitrolackfabriken and Förbandsfabriken be repurposed?  -What spatial qualities can be achieved by engaging with existing structures? -How can architectural and historical qualities be preserved while transforming a place and adding new elements? -How can both change and preservation be considered simultaneously?

Upcycle and Repurpose Driven Design : A case study at ReTuna Återbruksgalleria

Berglund, Moa January 2022 (has links)
How can we use more of the materials and products that have already been produced? At the second hand shopping mall ReTuna in Eskilstuna, where circular flows are a reality, there are still many products going to waste. This master thesis project explores the possibilities of upcycle and repurpose driven design, and by that adding new value to existing products. The process of doing that is the basis of this report.  ReTuna Återbruksgalleria is a place where people can leave products they do not want or need anymore.Everyday hundreds of products are left for reuse at ReTuna, which is connected to the overconsumptionthat results in copious amounts of second hand products. Much more than can be taken care of in today’s system. The resources put into every product needs to be valued accordingly to what they truly cost and emit.  This master’s thesis project explores how to design within the planetary boundaries by taking care and responsibility for what already is produced. The first phase of the project consists of observations and interviews to get an understanding of how ReTuna works. The framing of the project was decided after the research phase, which resulted in focus on one specific product, dining chairs. The next part of the project involves upcycling workshops, building of prototypes and an exhibition, all with a focus on increasing the value for second hand chairsand giving the material new areas of use. The last part of the project presents a design result, with an approach for involving more repurpose driven design and upcycling within design and product development.
