Primary Production and Nutrient Dynamics of Urban Ponds

Rolon dos Santos Mérette, Muriel 01 February 2012 (has links)
In urban areas, stormwater management ponds (SWPs) are built to mitigate polluted runoff. Although these ponds are increasing in numbers, their ecology is not well understood. Physical and chemical characteristics of 17 SWPs in the City of Ottawa were measured to determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass (Chl. a) and primary production (PP). While total phosphorus was the best predictor of algal biomass in the ponds (as in lakes), the imperviousness of the catchment could also predict Chl. a. Planktonic PP in two ponds measured seasonally was more closely related to water residence time than to nutrient concentrations with rates approaching at times the theoretical maximum for aquatic systems. In one pond, whole ecosystem metabolism, estimated using diel changes in dissolved oxygen and δ18O-O2, suggested that these hypereutrophic systems were net sinks for carbon in the summer but likely sources to the atmosphere at other times of the year.

Jaremalm, Maria January 2005 (has links)
The euthropthication of the Baltic Sea is a threat that is beginning to be taken seriously by the governments concerned. In Sweden, regulations concerning the allowed nitrogen (N) concentration in the effluent water from wastewater treatment plants are being tightened up. The Rimbo wastewater treatment plant has been imposed to reduce the annual mean concentration of total N in the effluent water to levels below 15 mg l-1. A more and more common way to reduce the nitrogen level in wastewater is to let the water pass through a wetland. This study investigates the possibility to build this kind of wetland at the outlet of the Rimbo wastewater treatment plant. A prestudy of the topography, soil characteristics and groundwater flow indicates that the land area in question is well suited for the construction of a wetland. A proposal for the design has been made by using a physically based computer model developed in the PRIMROSE project (PRocess based Integrated Management of constructed and Riverine wetlands for Optimal control of wastewater at catchment ScalE), which is financed by the EU. Analysis of the residence time distribution (RTD) is a tool for understanding wetland design characteristics and can be used for wetland engineering such as optimizing design for best possibleefficiency in nitrogen removal. In order to characterize the performance of a wetland, it is useful to translate the RTD to a key figure representing the treatment efficiency. In this work, two types of such key figures have been used. Key figure 1 gives the hydraulic efficiency and Key figure 2 gives an estimation of the nitrogen retention by an integration of hydraulic characteristics and the chemical transformation of nitrogen. The results of this study show that constructing a wetland in Rimbo probably would be an efficient way to reduce the nitrogen level at the effluent of the wastewater plant below the limits of the regulations. In addition, a wetland would form a nice place of recreation for the people in Rimbo and also make a good habitat for birds. Förslag till utformning har tagits fram med hjälp av en fysikaliskt baserad modell över vattenströmning, utvecklad inom det EU-finansierade projektet PRIMROSE (PRocess based Integrated Management of constructed and Riverine wetlands for Optimal control of wastewater at catchment ScalE).

Ortwein, Andreas 07 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Coupled Hydrological and Microbiological Processes Controlling Denitrification in Constructed Wetlands

Kjellin, Johan January 2007 (has links)

Treatment wetlands play an important role in reducing nitrogen content in wastewater and agricultural run-off water. The main removal process is denitrification and the removal efficiency depends on the hydrological and microbiological features of the wetland, especially in terms of water residence times and denitrification rates. The aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of the coupled hydrological and microbiological processes regulating the denitrification capacity. This was done by applying a broad spectrum of analyses methods, including tracer experiment, water flow modeling, denitrification rate measurements, and analyses of the microbial community structures. The tracer experiment and flow modeling revealed that the wetland design, especially the vegetation, largely can affect the water residence time distributions in wetlands. In the investigated wetland, vegetation dominated the water flow, explaining 60-80% of the variance in water residence times, whereas basin shape only explained about 10% of the variance, but also mixing phenomena significantly affected the residence times and could considerably delay solutes. Measured potential denitrification rates in the wetland exhibited significant spatial variations, and the variations were best described by concentration of nitrogen in sediments and water residence time. Analyses of the denitrifying bacteria populations indicated that a few key populations dominated and that the community diversity increased with decreasing nutrient levels and increasing water residence times. Moreover, it was found that denitrification rates in terms of Menten and first order kinetics can be evaluated by fitting a mathematical expression, considering denitrification and other nitrogen transforming processes to measured product formation in nitrate limited experiments.

Ecophysiology and ecosystem-level impacts of an invasive C4 perennial grass, Bothriochloa ischaemum

Basham, Tamara Sue 11 February 2014 (has links)
The anthropogenic introduction of species into new ecosystems is a global phenomenon, and identifying the mechanisms by which some introduced species become dominant in their introduced ranges (i.e., invasive) is crucial to predicting, preventing, and mitigating the impacts of biological invasions. Introduced perennial C₄ grasses are invading semi-arid grassland and savanna ecosystems throughout the south-central U.S. We hypothesized that in these semi-arid ecosystems, where variable precipitation patterns strongly influence vegetation dynamics, the success of an invasive plant species may be due in part to ecophysiological traits that enable high performance in response to unpredictable water availability. We also hypothesized that increased primary productivity and decreased plant input quality associated with these grass invasions have the potential to alter ecosystem carbon and nitrogen cycling and storage by altering the ratio of inputs (productivity) to outputs (decomposition/respiration). We tested the first hypothesis by quantifying ecophysiological performance differences between an invasive C₄ grass, Bothriochloa ischaemum, and co-occurring C₃ and C₄ native grasses under wet and dry conditions in the field and under two levels of simulated precipitation frequencies in a greenhouse experiment. We tested the second hypothesis by examining whether increased primary productivity and decreased C₃:C₄ grass ratios in savanna grass-matrices associated with B. ischaemum invasion altered (1) plant input quality and thus nutrient cycling and/or (2) net ecosystem carbon uptake in invaded areas. B. ischaemum's success as an invader was not directly related to its ability to cope with precipitation variability and availability, but its ability to rapidly produce large amounts of biomass may allow it to directly out-compete native species. B. ischaemum invasion decreased plant input quality and soil nitrogen availability. B. ischaemum invasion shifted ecosystem C-uptake from being nearly year-round to occurring predominantly in the summer. Greater C-uptake during the summer and under drier conditions compensated for a shorter growing seasons in B. ischaemum-invaded areas and cumulative annual NEE was similar between invaded and native-dominated areas. We conclude that B. ischaemum's impacts on soil nitrogen availability and plant-canopy microhabitat may allow it to exclude native species from invaded areas, but that its impacts on ecosystem C sequestration may be small. / text

On recessed cavity flame-holders in supersonic cross-flows

Retaureau, Ghislain J. 03 April 2012 (has links)
Flame-holding in a recessed cavity is investigated experimentally in a Mach 2.5 preheated cross-flow for both stable and unstable combustion, with a relatively low preheating. Self-sustained combustion is investigated for stagnation pressures and temperatures reaching 1.4 MPa and 750 K. In particular, cavity blowout is characterized with respect to cavity aspect ratio (L/D =2.84 - 3.84), injection strategy (floor - ramp), aft ramp angle (90 deg - 22.5 deg) and multi-fuel mixture (CH₄-H₂ or CH₄-C₂H₄ blends). The results show that small hydrogen addition to methane leads to significant increase in flame stability, whereas ethylene addition has a more gradual effect. Since the multi-fuels used here are composed of a slow and a fast chemistry fuel, the resulting blowout region has a slow (methane dominant) and a fast (hydrogen or ethylene dominant) branch. Regardless of the fuel composition, the pressure at blowout is close to the non-reacting pressure imposed by the cross-flow, suggesting that combustion becomes potentially unsustainable in the cavity at the sub-atmospheric pressures encountered in these supersonic studies. The effect of preheating is also investigated and results show that the stability domain broadens with increasing stagnation temperature. However, smaller cavities appear less sensitive to the cross-flow preheating, and stable combustion is achieved over a smaller range of fuel flow rate, which may be the result of limited residence and mixing time. The blowout data point obtained at lower fuel flow rate fairly matches the empirical model developed by Rasmussen et al. for floor injection phi = 0.0028 Da^-.8, where phi is the equivalence ratio and Da the Damkohler number. An alternate model is proposed here that takes into account the ignition to scale the blowout data. Since the mass of air entrained into the cavity cannot be accurately estimated and the cavity temperature is only approximated from the wall temperature, the proposed scaling has some uncertainty. Nevertheless the new phi-Da scaling is shown to preserve the subtleties of the blowout trends as seen in the current experimental data.

Function and dynamics of woody debris in boreal forest streams

Dahlström, Niklas January 2005 (has links)
The work in this thesis deals with (1) the effects of woody debris on stream channel morphology and retention of organic material, and (2) the dynamics of woody debris and its relation to riparian forest history and composition. The studied stream reaches are situated in mature, productive forests in the boreal zone of Sweden. Wood variables were important predictors of the frequency of debris dams, pool area, the proportion of pools formed by wood, and variation in the bankfull channel width. Pools formed by woody debris were mainly created by damming and had larger surface areas and residual depths than pools formed by other agents. Stream reaches intersecting old-growth forest (with minor influence of forest management) had coarser and longer woody debris pieces, greater amounts of wood, more debris dams, and wood-formed pools compared to streams surrounded by forests influenced by selective logging. The influence of past forest management on the quality and quantity of woody debris in streams were analyzed by using dendrochrnological methods. Selective loggings and absence of forest fires after 1831 resulted in lower input rates and a gradual replacement of pine by sruce over time. Residence times in stream channels of woody debris (>10 cm in basal diameter) were long and the oldest dated pieces of pine and spruce were over 300 and 100 years, respectively. Dynamics of woody debris were explored by comparing wood volumes and characteristics between stream channels and their riparianforests and between old growth and managed sites. Wood volumes recorded in the stream channels exceeded, but were related to, the volumes found in the riparian forests. Limited input of woody debris by bank cutting and absence of slope processes suggest that recruitment processes of woody debri to stream channels are similar as in riparian forests and slow decay in channels results in greater volumes. The retentiveness of organic material in stream channels was examined by using release and capture experiments in multiple reaces during varying discharges using different sizes of leaf mimics. Sixty eight percent of the variation in retention was explained by a multiple regression model including discharge and leaf mimic siz. Between 44 and 80% of the variation in retention among reaches was explained by channel constraint, gravel coverage, and woody debris variables as the most important. Estimates from a partial least squares (PLS) model suggest an increase in mean transport distances by 22 to 53% in managed forest streams compared to old growth conditions and in a low wood scenario, mean transport distances increased by 38 to 99% with larger increases for higher discharges and larger particle sizes. To regain more pristine conditions of stream channels, management and restoration are needed to increase the amount of woody debris that recreates lost channel structures and increaes the retention of organic material.

Sfredo, Marilia Assunta 28 August 2006 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / To study the dispersion of the coffee fruits during the drying, a vibrated tray drier with recycle was used. The dryer consists basically of four sections: drying vertical tunnel, vibration system, system of warm air supply to the drying tunnel and recycle system of coffee fruits. The drying tunnel contains four perforated trays through which the coffee fruits and air flow out, in cross flow. The coffee fruits drying was carried out using two experimental design, where the studied variables were, for the first design: coffee fruits temperature (40; 45 and 50ºC); mass of coffee fruits (11.5; 12.5 and 13.5 kg) and air mass rate (7; 8 and 9 kg air/min); the varieties of coffee fruits were: Acaiá, Catuaí and Mundo Novo; and for the second design: mass of coffee fruits (10; 12 and 14 kg) and air mass rate (7; 8 and 9 kg air/min), with coffee fruits temperature around 45ºC and the coffee variety Mundo Novo. For the first experimental design, the coffee fruits temperature only influenced significantly the drying time, where the largest temperature level reduces in 26.77 h the drying time. For the second experimental design, the studied variables were not significant on drying time. Coffee fruit sphericity, density, sticky decreased with the decrease of the moisture content. With reference to the quality of coffee grain, the best operational conditions were obtained with greater coffee fruits mass and air mass rate. The coffee fruits flow in the drying tunnel is promoted by vibration of the trays coupled to electromagnetic vibrators. The vibration amplitude was determined by an accelerometer connected to a signal conditioner and an analogical oscilloscope. The vibration amplitude decreased with the reduction of the coffee fruits moisture content due to the shrinkage and decrease of the mass, sticky, density and particle size coffee fruits. The coffee fruits mass rate and the residence time distribution were determined (RTD), during the drying. At the end of the drying, the flow occurs with easiness due to: absence of sticky of the coffee fruits; decrease of the particle mass and particle vibration damping decrease, due to particle rigidity acquired in the drying. The dispersion coefficient (Ez) was determined by Taylor Dispersion Model, Free Dispersion Model and Modified Free Dispersion Model. For the great majority of the experiments, the model that better fitted the experimental data (greater coefficient of correlation) was the model of the Modified Free Dispersion. The dispersion coefficient (Modified Free Dispersion) ranged from 1.31×10-4 to 68.67×10-4 m2/s. The Péclet number ranged from 1.15 to 31.00.

Modeling and simulation of solar reactor using computational fluid dynamics.

Danielle Matsumoto 29 May 2013 (has links)
This study consists of the fluid dynamic modeling of a solar reactor used in Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP). The model was developed by considering fluid dynamics, radiation field and the kinetics of the chemical actinometry reaction (ferrioxalate) in transient regime. This modeling was developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in PHOENICS. Simulation results based on the model were analyzed by comparing them with a set of chemical actinometry experimental data obtained by RIBEIRO (2009). This considered a reactor section constituted by two pipes (hairpin), and the residence time distribution (RTD) of the complete reactor, composed of ten pipes. Residence time distribution results showed that the laminar flow model presented a better fitting to experimental data. Since the actinometry experiments were carried out in a reactor section with two pipes, a new geometry was designed, which resulted in a better fitting of RTD results with theoretical models. In order to obtain a more precise radiation field model, another simplification was necessary, which consisted of assuming a straight cylindrical pipe geometry. The use of the chemical actinometry and the radiation field model enabled the estimation of the incident photons rate at reactor wall.
