Ana Maria Saul. The objective is to analyze the contribution and the influence of Paulo Freire s theory on the Brazilian Public Education System from the nineties until now. In order to achieve the objectives, this work combines a qualitative approach and a case study, incorporating the contributions of an ethnographic work to describe and analyze the ordinary life of a school in the municipality of Diadema-SP, focusing on the developing process of the school curriculum. Besides the observations, which are the natural tools of data collection, this research uses semi-structured interviews and analysis of documents. The data collection, analysis and results are divided into four thematic sections related to Paulo Freire s definitions during his period of management as the Secretary of Education in the Municipality of São Paulo (1989-1991). The themes are: collective construction, respect for the principle of school autonomy, the value of theory-practice unit and the permanent development of educational professionals. During the analysis the three themes were developed. Collective construction presented an improvement relating to the participation and the communication that exists between the various levels and the different players in constructing the curriculum. Autonomy of the school improved its way to develop plans and projects; permanent development of educational professionals allowed for the professors' reflections on their practices. The data showed that the value of the theory-practice unit has many challenges to face. However, the school studied and the municipality of Diadema represent a significant challenge when it comes to defining a public school that combines democracy with quality / Este estudo integra uma pesquisa nacional, sob a responsabilidade da Cátedra Paulo Freire da PUC-SP, sob a coordenação da Dra.

The study on the process ethnohistory of family units who organized the settlement known as Old Barrier, located on the left bank of the river Guama, São Miguel do Guama led to explore the universe of social relations marked by strategies of permanence, symbolic constructions and practices collective dominance in territory with a predominance of the common use of natural resources. Currently, the village is recognized as quilombo Santa Rita Barrier having received from the collective title of ITERPA corresponding to an area of 371 hectares. The territoritalities constructed from social practices based on community organizing and political mobilization around common interests reinforce a sense of belonging and identity maroon. This organization of the group materializes face the adversities imposed by the dominant society that built them or invisibilized designs "primarily" on the group and their ways of life. After titration several public policies come to the Santa Rita Barrier through programs and projects that address as the "development", "social inclusion maroon communities." Legal instruments adopted from the 1988 Federal Constitution, the Constitution State of Pará (1998) and "Program Brazil Quilombo" and other initiatives to ensure the right territory and social assistance through the issue of public policies aiming to "ethno-development". The various operations in Santa Rita Barrier were made without taking into account the trajectory of the families in the territory, practical knowledge, the way of life, the symbolic constructions and arrangements for common use practiced in lands traditionally occupied. This implies mismatches in relation to legal decisions and the awareness of social needs of these agents in many situations (meetings, meeting with technicians, researchers) has been able to explain and defend. This study sought to analyze the importance of ethnohistory, territoriality and use practices common maroon Santa Rita Barrier and identify how this approach could help reflect ethno development programs and projects. The methodology was authoritative ethnography, ethnohistory, collection and analysis of narratives, photographs, completion of questionnaires, analysis of notarial documents, "participatory maps and literature. Data were bumped during field research carried out at intervals from June to November 2010.

Inside men : confession, masculinity, and form in American fiction since the Second World War

McMaster, Iain George January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the use of form and spatial language in confessional fiction by men to elucidate how they conceptualise and negotiate material, corporeal, and psychological boundaries amidst the shifting social and political landscape of the United States since the Second World War. In light of increasingly urgent calls to address gender and racial discrimination in the United States, this study offers timely insight into an identity that, while culturally dominant, often escapes examination: white, heterosexual masculinity. Focusing on the representation of forms and spatial imagery, the chapters explore how five formally experimental novelists-Vladimir Nabokov, Joseph McElroy, Harry Mathews, William H. Gass, and Peter Dimock- employ the confessional genre to illustrate the way men perceive themselves as spatially and temporally circumscribed, and to look at the way they reinforce or transgress the boundaries of masculine identity. The post-war period in the United States witnessed a proliferation of confessional writing that coincided with the popularisation of Freudian psychoanalysis, the cold war rhetoric of suspicion, and the rise of second-wave feminism. As a result, the concept of the self increasingly becomes a repository for fantasies of potential discovery and hidden danger that rely, significantly, on metaphors of surface and depth. It is within, and often against, this cultural preoccupation with the self that these writers address, both directly and indirectly, the status of white masculinity. Drawing on innovative theories of forms and spatiality, this study examines the diverse language and imagery men use to describe their sense of selfhood as well as the bonds they form with others. The works considered in this study demonstrate a common preoccupation with the boundaries that separate interior from exterior and private from public. In response to pressures both intimate and impersonal, the narrators of the texts discussed in this thesis turn to confessional practices of written self-examination to locate themselves within networks of fluctuating relations and obligations. The question that this thesis seeks to resolve is whether the forms and spatial language the narrators employ enable or obstruct their efforts to negotiate the competing demands of ethical responsibilities to others and the desire to preserve a stable sense of self.

Convectively-Generated Potential Vorticity in Rainbands and Secondary Eyewall Formation in Hurricanes

Judt, Falko 01 January 2009 (has links)
Concentric eyewall formation and eyewall replacement cycles are intrinsic processes that determine the intensity of a tropical cyclone, as opposed to purely environmental factors such as wind shear or the ocean heat content. Although extensive research has been done in this area, there is not a single widely accepted theory on the formation of secondary eyewall structures. Many previous studies focused on dynamic processes in the inner core of a tropical cyclone that would precede and ultimately lead to the formation of a secondary eyewall. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 were frequently sampled by research aircraft which gathered a copious amount of data. During this time, Rita developed a secondary eyewall which eventually replaced the original eyewall. This thesis will investigate the formation of a secondary eyewall with particular emphasis on the rainband region, as observations show that an outer principal rainband transformed into the secondary ring. A high resolution, full physics model (MM5) initialized with global model forecast fields correctly predicted the secondary eyewall formation in Rita. The model output will be used to investigate both Katrina and Rita in terms of their PV generation characteristics since PV and vorticity maxima correlate well with wind maxima that accompany the eyewall and rainbands. Furthermore, dynamical processes such as vortex Rossby wave (VRW) activity in the inner core region will be analyzed. Comparison of the differences in the two storms might shed some light on dynamics that can lead to structure changes. Comparison of the model data with aircraft observation is used to validate the results. Doppler radar derived wind fields will be used to calculate the vertical vorticity. The vorticity field is closely related to PV and thus a manifestation of the PV generation process in the rainband. The investigation has shown that Rita?s principal rainband features higher PV generation rates at radii beyond 80 km. Both the azimuthal component and the projection of asymmetric PV generated by convection onto the azimuthal mean connected with the principal band are hypothesized to be of importance for the formation of the secondary eyewall. VRW were found not to be important for the initial formation of the ring but might enhance convective activity once the outer eyewall contracts.

This thesis is an examination of the representation of women in the contemporary female Bildungsromane, Rubyfruit Jungle (1973), by Rita Mae Brown, and Hotel du Lac (1984), by Anita Brookner. Considering the socio-historical context in which the works were produced, it is observed that the new role of women in this scenario indicates a change in its cultural representation, strengthening social criticism about the traditional female status. In the quest for affirmation of individuality and fulfillment of personal desires, the trajectories of the heroines Molly Bolt and Edith Hope are still marked by an unfavorable situation for women, since the construction of the feminine character occurs in traumatic or disharmonious environments, and presents a contradiction between the position attained by the character in contemporary society and its respective literary representation. Thus, by creating a sort of conscious tradition with the Bildungsroman paradigm, the female authors critically revisit the humanist values of the Germanic Bildung and question the explicit or implicit influence of patriarchal thought on female representation, offering new perspectives. The ability of the heroines to evaluate their own position as subject in the world and their awareness of their difference stands out. Thus, whether in an awakening in adolescence or a personal rebirth in midlife, Molly and Edith choose their own values for their aesthetic-spiritual improvement and freedom-responsibility in the Bildung process. It is understood that these decisions reveal themselves as forms of rejection of pre-established cultural norms for women, promoting writing as a way of asserting non-patriarchal female identities. It is argued that female Bildungsroman should be addressed by a constant critical interrogation of the form of narrating the personal and social development... / Classification of mineralogical domais and characterization of nickel ore from Santa Rita mine - BA, in support of geometallurgy.

Renato Contessotto 16 March 2017 (has links)
The Santa Rita mine, located in the mafic-ultramafic complex Fazenda Mirabela, is a mafic-ultramafic intrusion mineralized to nickel and copper sulphides located in the southeast of Bahia state, Itagibá municipality. The nickel sulphide deposit comprises a portion of a mafic-ultramafic layered complex under granulite metamorphism facies. Disseminated Ni and Cu sulphides form a stratiform body parallel to the lithostratigraphic contacts extending upwards essentially from the harzburgite unit and through the olivine orthopyroxenite unit. The nickel content is mainly associated to pentlandite in peridotitic rocks but also enriched in silicates and spinels in mafic rocks (dunites). Industrial plant benchmark data have shown the unfeasibility of establishing a strong relation between the ore chemical composition and its behavior in the mineral beneficiation process. Therefore, the knowledge of the mineralogical variability in the deposit is crucial for mine planning and mineral/metallurgical processing. More than 300 samples from drill core samples from the feasibility studies (period of 1985-2004) included in the short-term mining plan (2013-2017) were clustered into geological domains applying multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) of X-ray diffraction data (XRD). Results discriminated seventeen initial mineralogical domains considering the content of major gangue minerals: serpentine, olivine and pyroxene. Representative samples of the main mineralogical domains pre-defined by XRD-MSA ore-types were later subject to sieve size analysis followed by detailed mineralogical studies by automated SEM image analysis (MLA). The results indicate that groups with more peridotite and / or carbonatic compositions, with higher content of serpentine, have less time of grinding to reach P95 equal to 0,15 mm; high level of pentlandite alteration; greater portion of nickel associated into silicates; lower sulphides liberation degree; and a higher amount of sulphides below 10 ?m; in relation to the most pyroxenic composition groups.

Empowering Strategies at Home in the Works of Nikki Giovanni and Rita Dove

Proitsaki, Maria January 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the presence of Black women characters in domestic contexts in the early poetry of African American poets Nikki Giovanni and Rita Dove and examines the strategies these women employ, individually and in close relationships, in order to empower themselves and sustain those around them. It provides a joint exploration of the work of two major contemporary poets from a literary and interdisciplinary perspective, mapping instances of the poetic expression of Black feminist politics. The theoretical approach builds on a range of understandings of empowerment, strategy, and the central importance of home in an African American context, as conceptualized primarily in the work of Black feminists, in particular Patricia Hill Collins and bell hooks. Structurally, the study follows the cycle of a woman’s life from girlhood to old age. Thus, poems involving the empowerment strategies of girls at home are explored first. They are followed by poems where the domestic lives of adult women and then elderly women are addressed, with a focus on their respective empowering strategies. Discussed last are strategies of empowerment evident in the interactions of (largely) Black women of different generations in poems depicting intergenerational contacts and relationships. Homeplaces created by Black women have historically been experienced as sheltering African Americans from the perils of the dominant white society and thereby Black women’s domestic experiences have generally been linked to privilege rather than to confinement and victimization. In the poems, when at home, Black women utilize different strategies to assert themselves and each other, implicitly or explicitly, emerging strong and resilient, even though sometimes they may merely derive satisfaction from their poor circumstances. Strong connections to the past and a sense of belonging, partaking in legacies and storytelling, as well as memory, imagination, dreaming and hiding, are recurring elements of their empowerment processes. However, their enjoyment of loving bonds and their sharing of African-derived knowledges and ways of being emerge as the most significant aspects contributing to their empowerment.

Delaying Evacuation: Risk Communication in Mobilizing Evacuees

Li, Xiangyu 08 1900 (has links)
Evacuation is oftentimes the best means to prevent the loss of lives when residents encounter certain hazards, such as hurricanes. Emergency managers and experts make great efforts to increase evacuation compliance but risk area residents may procrastinate even after making the decision to leave, thus complicating response activities. Purpose - This study explores the factors determining evacuees’ mobilization periods, defined here as, the delay time between the decision to evacuate and actual evacuation. The theoretical model that guides this research is built on the protective action decision model (PADM). It captures both the social and psychological factors in the process of transferring risk information to mobilization action. The psychological process of risk communication originates from personalized external information and ends with the formation of risk perception, ultimately influencing evacuees’ mobilizations. Design/methodology/approach – Using structural equation modeling (SEM), the model is tested using survey data collected from Hurricane Rita (2005) evacuees in 2006 (N = 897). The residents of three Texas coastal counties (Harris, Brazoria, and Galveston) are randomly selected and telephone-interviewed. Findings – The findings indicate that mobilizations are affected directly by respondents’ concerns of the threats to their personal lives and costs and dangers on their evacuation trips. The perceptions of evacuees can be related to their exposure, attention, and understanding of the risk information. Research limitations/implications – The results suggest that practitioners pay more attention on the residents’ understanding of different types of risks, their abilities to process the risk information, as well as the means information is delivered. Therefore the public authorities should be more active in protecting evacuees’ properties and assets, as well as encourage evacuees to take closer shelters to avoid potential costs on road. Also the community should be more involved in mobilizing evacuation, as long as social cues can assist evacuees to better comprehend the threat information. Originality/value – This study tests the PADM framework empirically and structurally. It also clarifies the definition of evacuation mobilization using a new operation based on the evacuation groups per household.
