Vývoj osídlení v mikroregionu Zarabag (jižní Uzbekistán) na základě archeologických pramenů / Dynamics of the settlement pattern in the microregion of Zarabag (southern Uzbekistan) on the basis of archaeological sources

Augustinová, Anna January 2017 (has links)
15 Abstract The following thesis summarizes results of the archaeological research in the microregion of the Zarabag Oasis in the South Uzbekistan. The non-destructive research focused on the collection and evaluation of the archaeological data that allow to reconstruct the settlement dynamics in the oasis during the ages. Previously, there was not archaeological evidence available in the region. The fieldwork in the oasis and its closest surroundings was conducted by way of extensive surface survey (global coverage of the oasis focused on the detection of archaeological evidence), and intensive one (systematic surface survey on a closely defined area). The extensive survey proved to be more suitable for the studied environment in terms of the quality and quantity of the collected archaeological data. One part of the survey consisted in detection of the water sources (springs, surface canals and even remains of the karez systems). The basic units of extensive survey were represented by polygons (gardens, fields, cemeteries, tepas etc.), to which the finds collected during the research were attributed. Their dating in the combination with their spatial distribution allowed then to reconstruct the settlement processes and dynamics in the microregion of the oasis. One part of the research deals also with the...

L'art rupestre de la phase des cavaliers au Maroc : les sites de Foum Chenna (Vallée du Draa) et du Jebel Rat (Haut Atlas) : Analyse iconographique, thématique et proposition de chronologie / The Rock Art of the Phase of the Horsemen in Morocco : Foum Chenna (Draa Valley) and Jebel Rat (High Atlas) sites : Iconography, Themes and Chronology

Bravin, Alessandra 19 December 2014 (has links)
The first part presents the general characters of the phase known as "Libyco-Berber". After a thorough examination of the literature, the very notion of "Libyco-Berber" is analysed and recognized as being inadequate to define the phase and it is proposed a new denomination i.e. the "phase of the horsemen."Its specific characters are analysed from the point of view of the introduction of the horse in North Africa, in terms of iconography and style, all set in the historical context of Morocco's I millennium BC.The second part relates to the plateau of Tizi 'n Tirghiyst, examined on the basis of publications and through an accurate prospecting work. From this approach emerges the complexity and heterogeneity of the rock art of this area that includes not only the phase of the horsemen but also earlier phases. The methodology includes the analysis of the iconographic typical elements: the horse and harness, his weapons and the themes. The third part is devoted to the study of Foum Chenna, in the Draa Valley. It is immediately detected the homogeneity of the site although an older phase is present. The methodology for the analysis is the detailed study of individual elements that led to the identification of new themes and the discovery of new inscriptions in Lybic letters. The fourth part is devoted to the comparison between the two sites, to highlight similarities and differences, to identify elements for a chronology. The three annexes are respectively the corpus of engravings of the horsemen phase of the Rat, of Foum Chenna and the totality of the Libyan inscriptions of this site.

Colorimetric and spectral analysis of rock art by means of the characterization of digital sensors

Molada Tebar, Adolfo 01 February 2021 (has links)
[EN] Cultural heritage documentation and preservation is an arduous and delicate task in which color plays a fundamental role. The correct determination of color provides vital information on a descriptive, technical and quantitative level. Classical color documentation methods in archaeology were usually restricted to strictly subjective procedures. However, this methodology has practical and technical limitations, affecting the results obtained in the determination of color. Nowadays, it is frequent to support classical methods with geomatics techniques, such as photogrammetry or laser scanning, together with digital image processing. Although digital images allow color to be captured quickly, easily, and in a non-invasive way, the RGB data provided by the camera does not itself have a rigorous colorimetric sense. Therefore, a rigorous transformation process to obtain reliable color data from digital images is required. This thesis proposes a novel technical solution, in which the integration of spectrophotometric and colorimetric analysis is intended as a complement to photogrammetric techniques that allow an improvement in color identification and representation of pigments with maximum reliability in 3D surveys, models and reconstructions. The proposed methodology is based on the colorimetric characterization of digital sensors, which is of novel application in cave paintings. The characterization aims to obtain the transformation equations between the device-dependent color data recorded by the camera and the independent, physically-based color spaces, such as those established by the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE). The rigorous processing of color and spectral data requires software packages with specific colorimetric functionalities. Although there are different commercial software options, they do not integrate the digital image processing and colorimetric computations together. And more importantly, they do not allow the camera characterization to be carried out. Therefore, as a key aspect in this thesis is our in-house pyColourimetry software that was developed and tested taking into account the recommendations published by the CIE. pyColourimetry is an open-source code, independent without commercial ties; it allows the treatment of colorimetric and spectral data and the digital image processing, and gives full control of the characterization process and the management of the obtained data to the user. On the other hand, this study presents a further analysis of the main factors affecting the characterization, such as the camera built-in sensor, the camera parameters, the illuminant, the regression model, and the data set used for model training. For computing the transformation equations, the literature recommends the use of polynomial equations as a regression model. Thus, polynomial models are considered as a starting point in this thesis. Additionally, a regression model based on Gaussian processes has been applied, and the results obtained by means of polynomials have been compared. Also, a new working scheme was reported which allows the automatic selection of color samples, adapted to the chromatic range of the scene. This scheme is called P-ASK, based on the K-means classification algorithm. The results achieved in this thesis show that the proposed framework for camera characterization is highly applicable in documentation and conservation tasks in general cultural heritage applications, and particularly in rock art painting. It is a low-cost and non-invasive methodology that allows for the colorimetric recording from complete image scenes. Once characterized, a conventional digital camera can be used for rigorous color determination, simulating a colorimeter. Thus, it is possible to work in a physical color space, independent of the device used, and comparable with data obtained from other cameras that are also characterized. / Thanks to the Universitat Politècnica de València for the FPI scholarship / Molada Tebar, A. Analysis and Development of Augmented Reality Applications for the Dissemination of Cultural Heritage

Blanco Pons, Silvia 27 December 2021 (has links)
[EN] AR consists of superimposing virtual elements on the real environment, so that the user perceives these elements as if they were part of the reality they are looking at. AR applications on smartphones allow virtual content to be visualised through the device's camera. AR is a very powerful tool for dissemination as it allows any type of information to be added to reality, from a simple informative text to an interactive 3D model. It can be used as a guide in a museum, it can show the recreation of a destroyed monument, or, as in the case study presented here, it can help in the interpretation of cave paintings. This thesis is based on the idea that AR can greatly enhance the interpretation of rock art without affecting or damaging the paintings. It can be used to attract a wider audience, to introduce the history of the rock art paintings and at the same time provide the visitor with a much more enriching experience. Throughout the thesis, the technique of AR visualisation using mobile devices has been studied in-depth. The different programming libraries have been analysed by means of case studies in real environments as well as the factors that can affect the paintings recognition. An AR application applied to a real case of rock art paintings has been developed and subsequently evaluated by a group of people. Finally, the effect of sunlight and its changes throughout the day on image recognition in outdoor environments has been studied. This work provides a starting point for the AR applications development applied to the dissemination of cultural heritage, especially focused on rock art, an environment that suffers from additional difficulties due to its location, the difficulty of characteristic points recognition and changes in sunlight, problems that have been tried to solve throughout the study. The main outcomes have been very favourable, using freely available programming libraries, and it has been possible to develop a set of AR applications in different places. The evaluations have been very positive, with users who have tested the applications confirming that the interpretation of the paintings is easier for them and they can better understand the purpose of the paintings. The major drawback is the lack of knowledge about this technique and the loss of realism in some cases due to occlusion, i.e. the virtual objects are not positioned behind the real objects. The good news is that this technology is evolving very fast and during the development of the thesis there have been great advances, among them, the development of new programming libraries developed by Google and Apple, which provide the necessary tools to create very powerful and immersive applications, where the user will feel part of the virtual environments created. / Blanco Pons, S. Binding Ochre to Theory

Nibbs, Simone E 01 January 2012 (has links)
Widely found throughout the archaeological and artistic records in capacities ranging from burial contexts to early evidence of artistic expression, red ochre has been studied in archaeological and art conservationist communities for decades. Despite this, literature discussing binders is disparate and often absent from accessible arenas. Red ochre is important historically because its use can be used to help further the understanding of early humans, their predecessors, and their cognitive capabilities. However, there is not much written speculation on the processes involved in binder selection, collection, and processing. Based on the idea of these three activities associated with binders, I propose a schema for what the use of already prepared and obtained items doubling as binders might look like in the archaeological record. Using an experiment in which I used red ochre mixed with various binders to paint standardized shapes on a rock surface, I propose ways in which more experiments could be done in this vein. I suggest ways in which scales of desirability can be created based on different traits painters might have found important in the binder selection process, such as ease of paint reconstitution, texture of the paint, and the appearance of the paint mixture once on the stone. This research is one small step in the direction of expanding and diversifying the literature on binders in prehistoric paintings, and opening new avenues of conversation about the choices and motivations of early painters.

Paléogéographie symbolique au Magdalénien moyen : apport de l'étude des productions graphiques pariétales des abris occupés et sculpté de l'Ouest français (Roc-aux-Sorciers, Chaire-à-Calvin, Reverdit, Cap-Blanc) / Symbolic paleogeography in the Middle Magdalenian : contribution of rock-art studies from occupied and scultured rock-shelters in Western France (Roc-aux-Sorciers, Chaire-à-Calvin, Reverdit, Cap-Blanc)

Bourdier, Camille 20 December 2010 (has links)
Thanks to the association of rock-art and a chrono-cultural context, the occupied and decorated rock-shelters appear to be particularly appropriate to consider the spatio-temporal structuration of the Middle Magdalenian. Based on analytical tracings, the techno-stylistic study of four rock-art sites (Roc-aux-Sorciers, Chaire-à-Calvin, Reverdit, Cap-Blanc) reveals a double process of unity and regionalization. A tradition of the Magdalenian parietal sculpture appears, in the continuity of the Solutrean sculpture. Two groups can be distinguished however. The “Roc-aux-Sorciers group” spreads from Vienne to Eastern Périgord. Inside, the analogies between the Roc-aux-Sorciers and Chaire-à-Calvin friezes raises the question of their author(s), and beyond their inhabitants. The “Cap-Blanc group” coexists in Périgord. The difference between Roc-aux-Sorciers and Cap-Blanc is also found in the archaeological material. Could these symbolic groups illustrate two socio-cultural groups? Finally, the socio-cultural function of sculptured sites is tackled through the choice of sculpture. Inside the decorated sites of Eastern Vienne, the monumental sculptured frieze of Roc-aux-Sorciers rock-shelter certainly was public art, associated with large occupations. Then the frieze would have acted as an element of social cohesion. It could also have served as a territorial mark facing other populations (La Garenne group?).

The Didima Rock Art Centre : a critical evaluation of the intersections of tourism, heritage conservation, and visual communication.

Storey, Amanda Eileen Maria. January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation critically evaluates the intersections of tourism, heritage conservation, and visual communication by exploring the display materials and Museology within the Didima Rock Art Centre, at Cathedral Peak, southern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal. The text consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces rock art and current research and conservation concerns in relation to heritage and rock art. The second chapter serves as an introduction to the Didima Rock Art Centre. A discussion raises important issues about visual communication in regard to the representation of the Southern San and rock art as material culture both in this museum context. Chapter three investigates and analyses the museum practices that have been used as a visual communication within the Centre by discussing methods that have been used in the museum and its auditorium. A conclusion follows that summarizes the candidate's findings regarding museum display within the Centre, and its impact on tourism and heritage conservation in relation to the Southern San and rock art. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2006.

Heimlich, Geoffroy 19 June 2014 (has links)
In contrast with the Sahara and Southern Africa, Central Africa is superficially presented and largely overlooked in general publications and compilations regarding rock art research. The rock art of Lower Congo is concentrated in a region that stretches from Kinshasa to the Atlantic coast and from Northern Angola to Southern Congo-Brazzaville. Although already reported in the nineteenth century by James Tuckey during his exploration of the Congo River, it had never been a subject of thorough investigation. As a result, its age has long remained uncertain.<p><p>Presently inhabited by the Ndibu, one of the Kongo subgroups, the Lovo Massif is situated north of the ancient Kongo kingdom. Although Kongo has been, since the end of the fifteenth century, one of the best-documented kingdoms of Africa, both through historical records and through ethnographic and anthropological studies in more recent times, in archaeological terms it remains largely unknown. With 102 sites (including 16 decorated caves), the Lovo Massif has the largest concentration of rock art in the entire region. Hundreds of limestone outcrops with carved surfaces, punctuated by numerous caves and rocky overhangs, rise up over an area of about 400 square kilometers. <p><p>Through the research I have undertaken, it has been possible to determine for the first time direct dates for the rock art of Lower Congo. The study of the previously unknown decorated caves of Tovo and Nkamba, in particular, has allowed me to ascertain the chronology and the interpretation of these rock images.<p> / Doctorat en Histoire, art et archéologie / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Engendering the rock art archaeology of the north Eastern Cape, South Africa Ritual specialists, novices, and social conditioning

Green, Dawn 01 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Xhosa / Rock art affords unique opportunities for engendered research because it provides emic views of how specific people re-presented themselves. My feminist study investigates under-researched ‘San/Bushman’ gendered identities to understand more about area-specific constructions of personhood through analysing 2852 rock paintings from two adjacent areas of the northern Eastern Cape, South Africa. Using quantitative and qualitative methods and evidence from excavation archaeology, ethnography, ethology, and neurocognitive research, I identify three categories of ritual specialists: experienced and preeminent; ordinary; and novice. These paintings show that wo/men ritual specialists could transcend the identity norms of ordinary people, but men ritual specialists may have had more status and power. I suggest the paintings acted as a controlling mechanism for the potency of women, indoctrination of novices, and present an ideal for the practice of ritual specialists and ordinary people. This research has important implications for identifying different types of identity marking by different groups of southern African San. / Bonono ba majwe bo fana ka menyetla e ikgethang bakeng sa dipatlisiso tse fokolang hobane e fana ka ditjhebo tsa bonnete tsa hore na batho ba itseng ba ne ba itlhahisa jwang. Isifundo sam ngobufazi siphanda ngohlanga lwama ‘San/Bushman’ okanye Amaqhakancu/abaThwa nekuphandwe kancinci ngabo, injongo ikukuqonda ubume bobuntu babo kwiindawo ngeendawo. Olu phando lwenziwe ngokuhlalutya imizobo esematyeni engama-2852 ekwiingingqi ezimbini eziseMntla-Mpuma Koloni, eMzantsi Afrika. Ngokusebenzisa uphando olusekelwe kubungqina bamanani nobusekelwe kwiingxoxo nokuzathuza kwanobungqina obuvezwe zizinto ezigronjwe/ezigrunjwe kwiziza zakudaladala, obuvezwe kwiinkcazelo zenkcubeko yabantu abahlukeneyo, obuvezwe kwiinkcazelo zoluntu xa lujongwe ngokwenkalo yendalo (i-itholoji) nobuvezwe kwizifundo zokuqiqa nokusebenza kwengqondo, ndiphawule iindidi ezintathu zeengcali zezithethe: abanamava nolwazi olubalaseleyo; abanolwazi oluqhelekileyo; abangenalwazi kangako. Le mizobo ibonisa ukuba iingcali zezithethe zamadoda nezabafazi zinakho ukubona ngaphaya kwendlela ababona ngayo abantu jikelele, kodwa kusengenzeka ukuba iingcali zezithethe zamadoda zazinewonga negunya elithe chatha. Ndibona ukuba imizobo yayisebenza njengesixhobo sokulawula amandla neziphiwo zabafazi, ukuqweqwedisa iingcinga zabangenalwazi luthe vetshe, nokuvelisa okulindelekileyo kwindlela yokusebenza kweengcali zezithethe nabantu jikelele. Olu phando lubalulekile ekunakaneni iindidi ezahlukeneyo zokuphawula ubuyena bamaqela ahlukeneyo ohlanga lwamaSan/ Amaqhakancu aseAfrika. / M.A. (Archaeology)
