“I want to become a role model for them” : A qualitative study in a Philippine context about social workers perceptions of poverty

Dagdelen, Fatima, Agnebrink, Moa January 2017 (has links)
There is much said about how to support a client as a social worker. Much is based on the country's politics, structure, organization, norms, but also on the values, knowledge, and responsiveness of social workers. When a country is exposed to poverty, social work takes a certain kind of shape and direction based on several viewpoints. The world has its eyes on developing countries with many poverty reduction recommendations, but how do social workers, living and working in a country with high poverty, express their reality?                       This study aims to, in a Philippine context, examine professional social workers perception of poverty and identify their approach to poverty alleviation and clients living in poverty. A qualitative study, with eight semi-structured interviews was hold plus one group interview including two respondents. All respondents were professional social workers that worked with poverty reduction in various ways. The thematic analysis was made with the framework of Human Development and Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach theory. The result shows that the efforts to reduce poverty in the Philippines require long-term thinking where respondents' mostly have the task of changing communities and clients' values. The respondents’ perceptions of poverty is that it is a condition that can be changed as long as the individual living in poverty makes active choices. The conclusions show that the major approach the respondents have, is to work with clients potentials and mindset by aware them to see what they actually can do for themselves. Almost all of the respondents use their own background as a motivator to support clients out of poverty and they approach their clients with patience, attention, belonging, and love, which can lead to minimizing obstacles that may be in the way of increasing the well-being of clients. On the other hand, the results show that it is the individual's responsibility to change his or her situation and a common perception among the respondents' is that education is the key to reduce poverty.

Andersson, Emma, Petrovska, Viktoria January 2019 (has links)
The social work has change from a voluntary dedication to an established profession. Social work is a profession in constant change and development. This study is about how social work has changed over time and how these changes have affected social workers professional practice. Our study highlights the changes in Sweden in the last 30 years. Our study is a qualitative study with an individual perspective and was conducted through semi-structured interviews with social workers over 55 years old. The results were consequently analyzed by using organizational theory, new institutonalism, professionalism and specialization. The result showed mainly three changes. These changes were digitization, streamlining and specialization. The result showed that these changes have contributed to both positive and negative consequences. Some of the consequences are; less client contact, high workload and more administrative work. The social work is changing as society develops. The result also shows that the professional identity is complex and associated to many other things. The disadvantage of the social worker's professional profession is the complexity, because social workers are a professional group with broad knowledge who can work in many different fields, which means that a professional identity can be  difficult to create.

Lundquist, Hannah, Wanner, Daniella January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine aftercare for clients who have been in compulsory treatment under the Substance Abusers (Special Provisions) Act 1988. This is done by examining determining factors for what kind of aftercare the clients receive. Furthermore the study aims to find out clients motivation to aftercare from the perspective of social workers. The study aims to highlight the reality of aftercare and the challenges of providing care to clients post-compulsory treatment. To examine this, the study is based on the following questions:-What factors impact clients post-compulsory treatment paths?-How do social workers experience and understand their clients’ motivation for care post-compulsory treatment? To answer these questions, the used method was semi-structured interviews to gather data from five informants working at social services in different municipalities, and three informants working at institutions run by the National Board of Institutional Care. The result of this study show that the options for care post-compulsory treatment are limited. When options are available other factors impact the aftercare, such as organisational budgets, the clients’ other complex life situations apart from yet related to the addiction and the clients’ ability to embrace the treatment. The respondents also state that for some clients, compulsory treatment is like being in jail, which means engaging in motivating clients can be very challenging. Furthermore, motivation for change is low for clients who re-entry compulsory treatment. The clients’ motivation for aftercare tends to go through different phases during the time they are under care at the institutions which provide challenges for the professionals working with them. The study also found that cooperation between the relevant organisations is essential for good outcomes for clients.

Stresshantering i socialt arbete med barn och familjer / Stress Management in Child Protection Services

Lindqvist, Alva January 2021 (has links)
Social work has long been known as a stressful profession where burnout and emotional exhaustion among staff are common. Especially duties in child services seem to cause stress and dissatisfaction among social workers. The aim of this thesis is to with a research overview find out how social workers within child protection experience and cope with stress at work. The study is answering the following research question: how do social workers who work with children and families cope with stress at work? The method for the current study is a research overview with a thematic analysis. The purpose of this method is to compile research regarding coping strategies within child and family services. To understand the empirical data a psychosocial perspective with focus on Karasek’s (1979) demand-control-support model and coping is applied. The result of the study shows that social workers working in child protection use stress management strategies that are based on social support and personal characteristics as well as with the help of the organization's efforts as support. To feel that you have meaningful social connections seems to be the most recurring factor for stress management in child protection. Both formal and informal social support are of great importance for how social workers cope with the psychologically stressful work, sometimes regardless of individual self-help strategies or organizational efforts.

Ungdomar som prostituerar sig och hur socialtjänsten arbetar med dessa ungdomar : En kvalitativ enkätstudie om socialarbetarens förhållning och arbete med                                ungdomar som prostituerar sig / Young people who prostitue themselves and how  social service works with these young people

Nasrudin, Michélle, Söderlind, Malin January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the study was to investigate how social services relates to and how they work with youth in prostitution. The study was conducted with a qualitative strategy where postal surveys have been used. The questionnaires were sent to twelve respondents in two major cities in Sweden, and respondents consisted of social workers that had experience of working with youth in prostitution. The study had a response rate of 50%, which means that of twelve respondents, six of them answered. The results showed that social workers worked in different ways with young people who prostitute themselves. Their work was about creating change and supporting youth through this change. Social workers supported the youth’s empowerment, their own self-empowerment, so they could change their life situation. Social workers attitude played an important role in helping youth.

Socialt arbete i skuggan av det hedersrelaterade   våldet / Social work in the shadow of the honor-related violence

Batti, Arin, Adam, Jasmin January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to explore how social workers experience their knowledge and resources in their work with honor-related violence and oppression. We conducted a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with five social workers from two different municipalities in Sweden, who worked with honor-related violence and oppression. Collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The result showed a lack of knowledge and resources in the area, which resulted in a lack of security in the workplace. The result also showed the connection between power and knowledge and that these are interconnected and interdependent. Lack of knowledge in turn constitutes powerlessness. Knowledge thus becomes a lifeline for the social worker to be able to exercise the power needed to help victims of honor-related violence and oppression. Our study indicates that more research is needed that gives new perspectives on a work with honor-related violence and oppression.
