An Examination Of Time Use Patterns Influence On Academic Achievement Among African American And Hispanic Male High School Stude

Riley, Keith 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this investigation is to contribute to the body of knowledge in the area of effective time management skills among African American and Hispanic male student athletes and their academic achievement utilizing the Educational Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) Base year thru the First follow-up database. The researcher has assessed indicators (socioeconomic status, time use patterns, sports participation, and race) within the construct of academic achievement among African American and Hispanic male high school student athletes. Their contribution to the main effects revealed that statistically significant differences exist between the non-sports participant and sports participant groups. After controlling for time spent completing mathematics homework and socioeconomic status, the findings revealed that time spent completing math homework was significantly related to academic achievement for African American and Hispanic male student athletes. Time spent watching television was not significantly related to academic achievement for African American and Hispanic male student athletes. For the variable time spent playing on the computer game, the analysis indicated that the detrimental effect of time spent playing video/computer games was the same for African American and Hispanic male student athletes. Finally, it is noteworthy that effective use of time (i.e., playing video games less) and sports participation positively influences academic achievement of African American and Hispanic males high school student athletes. Strategies were uncovered for possible future research among African American and Hispanic male student athletes to increase academic achievement levels.

Samhällsfrågor som didaktiskt begrepp i samhällskunskap på gymnasieskolan : En potential för undervisningen / Social Issues as a Didactical Concept in Social Studies in Upper Secondary School

Morén, Göran January 2017 (has links)
This licentiate thesis examines and discusses the potential of the subject social studies by way of an analysis of the concept social issues. It comprises three articles which are based on three separate studies. The first was a discourse analysis on the concept of social issues in steering documents for social studies in upper secondary school from the 1960’s until the current curriculum. The second was a questionnaire in which 74 social studies teachers answered questions regarding their understanding and teaching of social studies, specifically in relation to the concept of social issues. The third study was based on interviews with seven teachers who had completed the questionnaire. The study allows for a shift in focus between structure and agency. Whereas the structure dominates the analysis in the first article the teachers, with agency, gradually move into the foreground in the other articles. With a social-constructionist perspective, phenomena like a school subject and teaching practice are seen as formed by both structure, such as discourse, and agents, in this case professional teachers. The text analysis shows that social issues as a didactical concept is shifting in its meaning and didactical function for the subject depending on the discourse. It is argued that social issues, in the current steering documents, are downplayed in relation to concepts like “core content” and “knowledge requirements”. The questionnaire that followed showed that teachers had an understanding of social issues that challenged the logic of the previous discourse analysis. They seemed to find it possible to combine “teaching with social issues as the point of departure” with the predefined content and knowledge requirements of the subject syllabus. Based on the results of the final interview study the third article argues that the subject social studies, when seen through the lens of social issues, is one that is open, strives beyond the limitations of  core content and calls for  authentic, sometimes controversial content. The conclusion of the licentiate thesis is that the concept of social issues carries the potential to create a subject that is meaningful for students and that challenges the risk of school becoming instrumental.

Catholicism and the Catholic Church in Contemporary Ireland : The Church-State Relationship, the Societal Role of Catholicism and the Applicability of Secularisation Theory in the Aftermath of the Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne Reports

Stirling, Graeme January 2023 (has links)
Abstract Throughout the period of 1972-2022 and previously, Catholicism has been a robust aspect of Irish national culture and identity and the institutional Catholic church has enjoyed a degree of sociopolitical influence and extensive co-operation with the Irish state. This has led to characterisations of Ireland as an outlier amidst secularisation patterns worldwide, whilst the 2009 scandals following the publication of the Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne Reports into clerical sexual abuse have led to claims of the collapse of Irish Catholicism and the church.  Both the former and latter depictions of the Irish case appear to be rooted in the conflation of overlapping theoretical and practical issues. At the theoretical level, the cultural role of Catholicism as an aspect of individual and community identity appears most relevant to its longevity but has been frequently conflated with religiosity, as measured by churchgoing, belief in divinity and prayer and other forms of religious participation reported via flawed quantitative methods. This appears to have led to Ireland’s mischaracterisation as a highly religious state. The unsuccessful application of modernisation-based secularisation theory to Ireland therefore appears to have been flawed.  Re-examining the Irish case reveals that, whilst secularisation theory does not prove adequate, some of its predicted outcomes are observable via significant shifts in the sociopolitical outlook of Irish Catholics and their rejection of clerical authority prior to the scandals. However, the continued prevalence of Catholic practice and identity show that this does not represent the predicted rejection of religious affiliation, thus strengthening the case for the key significance of Catholicism’s social and cultural role and the inapplicability of secularisation theory.  The collapse of the church since 2009 also appears questionable, with legal and practical factors such as constitutional exemptions, ownership of schools and policy consultation via the Structured Church-State Dialogue Framework complicating the church-state dynamic. The state’s approach appears to be primarily rooted in pragmatism and a reluctance to meet the cost and workload of altering the status quo, rather than in the perceived views of the electorate, and has stagnated following a brief period of backlash after the Reports. As such, both Catholicism as an aspect of society and culture and the institutional church, as considered wholly separate from one another, are likely to remain robust in the near term.

Postavy a příběhy ze dna Prahy v beletristické reflexi na přelomu 19. a 20. století / Characters and stories of Prague's underworld as reflected in late 19th and early 20th century fiction

Bartoňová, Barbora January 2015 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with various genres which, at the turn of the century, depicted life of the Prague offscourings, i.e. socially excluded and frequently humiliated inhabitants of Prague. The main objective is to give a characteristic of a homeless character, the man on the street, also known as the "Prague vagabond", a character which regularly appears in literature of the period. The thesis discusses several specific Prague vagabonds whom it subsequently compares to the literary type of vagabond (the author used Daniela Hodrová's theoretical findings about the literary type) and shows the impact the city environment has on him. Besides that, the author follows the way the city itself is described as the vagabond of Prague is closely connected with and to a large extent determined by his home city. Primarily, the thesis works with fiction (although a few plays are included as well) and aims to focus on authors of the period who are not widely known today, e.g. R. J. Kronbauer, K. L. Kukla, V. Plaček, F. L. Šmíd, and J. Hais Týnecký. Keywords Prague, Prague offscourings, vagabond, beggar, social issues, literary character, environment

Cultivating Liberation: The Effects of Collective Shaping on Context and Power Dynamics within Social Justice Narratives

Morris, Gabrielle N. 08 1900 (has links)
Social issues are becoming increasingly apparent. More people are experiencing the impact of social issues directly and through their media consumption. It is important to understand and reflect on our collective impact on the media and how the media affects the collective. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a collaborative workshop (collective shaping) and a verbal community that examined media depictions of social justice and injustice related to context and power dynamics. The effects of the workshop were evaluated using an A-B design with multiple probe measures across three participants. During the pre-, probe, and post-training assessments, participants watched videos and responded to a written prompt. Results of the study suggest that written responses were not adequately trained during the workshop. However, anecdotally, participant's verbal responding shifted drastically during the training workshop. The results are discussed within the context of the training apparatus, effects the workshop had on the participants and researchers, and progression forward.

Os parques lineares na dinâmica da produção do espaço urbano na periferia - o caso do Parque Linear do Córrego do Rio Verde em Itaquera - São Paulo / The Linear Parks in the dynamics of production of urban space in the periphery: the case of Linear Park Córrego do Rio Verde in Itaquera - São Paulo

Migliacci, Marcella Carmona Wahl Rontani 01 September 2016 (has links)
The linear parks in São Paulo are mostly located in the city peripheries and they are inserted in the dynamics of production of urban space. This study attempts to make environmental and social analysis of the implementation implications and planning of linear parks, from the analysis of the production of space, especially in the Linear Park Córrego do Rio Verde, located in Itaquera, periphery of Sao Paulo. In this sense surveys were conducted based on theoretical framework, public data, and field observations. The analysis shows that there is a huge challenge to be faced in the relationship between environmental and social issues, because in most cases are seen as separate problems without that evidence that are intrinsically correlated.

Tillsammans för förändring: på vilka sätt kan sektoröverskridande partnerskap främja mänskliga rättigheter?

Hiller, Anna January 2019 (has links)
In today's society, we face many complex and major challenges, several of them concerning human rights - at both global, regional and local level. To enable solutions to these problems, collective action and effort is required. As a result, cooperation between all sectors within the UN, as well as the public and the private sector, not to mention civil society, is crucial. In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a historic framework: Agenda 2030, which addresses the importance of partnerships and engagement from all sectors to achieve sustainable development and the application of human rights for all. In light of this, the present study investigates partnerships between the private and non-profit sector from a human rights perspective. Previous research has dealt with both cross-sector partnerships for social issues, the role of companies in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals, and CSR and human rights. The research about cross-sector partnerships for social issues, which are the partnerships that are addressed in Agenda 2030, often lacks the perspective of how they can promote human rights. The aim with this thesis is to therefore research how human rights are understood in cross-sectoral partnerships, in which ways these partnerships can promote human rights, as well as the successes and challenges that exist for them. The methodological design of this research consists of interviews with participants from partnerships between the private and the non-profit sector, with representatives from both sides. The present study shows that there is an interdependency between cross-sector partnerships and human rights and that it is clear that partnerships between different sectors are necessary to solve the social problems we are facing today. We need to partner for change.

Novas velhas formas de dominação: os parques infantis e o novo projeto de dominação social / Old new forms of domination: the "parques infantis" and the new project of social domination

Guedes, Lizandra 11 August 2006 (has links)
The current essay intends to investigate the connection between the first experiment of the Parques Infantis (1935 - 1938), developed in the city of São Paulo, and the nation project designed by the new generation of the predominant class of São Paulo city, jointly with several modernists and intellectuals. In this essay we try to rescue the aspirations of this group for the future of the country, as well as the role played by education and its institutions in the political and social scenario of São Paulo and Brazil. We hope to elucidate the ambiguous feature that strongly stress the actions of the current government, where the dominant class believes in the strength of education to solve the problems of the country, sometimes revealing a strong moralizing and disciplinarian character, and sometimes highlighting a wide formative potential.
