This work has as its central object the discussion of social issues and the environment from the appropriation of land and environmental impacts in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, from 1980 to 2010. The analysis is in its relationship with the factory and Votorantim Metais Zinco SA in Igrejinha. He demonstrates this relationship through its deployment strategy for its proximity to the public entity in pursuit of securing their interests and those of his class fraction. It starts with the assumption that such a relationship established in a context in which development was articulated in the new channels of representation, as well as the State, the force capable of protecting the interests of private capital. The research pointed to the fact that the establishment of the factory in Juiz de Fora and more specifically in Igrejinha gave up effectively by the alliances between capital and power in all federal, state and municipal levels, the latter of whom was responsible to create and maintain conditions favorable to plant in the region, especially with regard to infrastructure. Another key element obtained through our research is the fact that the population of the district has enjoyed Igrejinha not in any measure of goods produced by capital gains in your living space during the past 30 years. We also found that the ratio of local to the environment has been made in the interests of capital while minimizing significant environmental impacts in the locality.

Johansson, Jeanette January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this study is to find out which didactic strategies teachers use in grades 1-3 when they are working with current social issues in a social science classroom. Previous research in the field of social science is poorly studied and especially studies on how it is in the classroom. There are no studies for grades 1-3. In order to achieve the goal in this investigation, I have used interviews and observations as a method. The observation is done in three classes, one class for each grade. After the observations I have conducted interviews with the teachers of the classes. In order to analyse the subject matter, I have used Odenstad’s three profiles. The profiles are: orientation, analysis and discussion. With these three profiles I have categorized the content of the lessons. The result shows that there are both similarities and differences between the three teacher strategies and lessons. All teachers’ work is more or less between the orientation- and the discussion profile. Strategies that all three teachers use are to describe and explain to show association in the matter. One teacher has a strategy of using the subject of history to make associations. She also relates to the students' previous knowledge and impressions. Another teacher seems to have the strategy that the lesson about current social issues should give the students new concepts. Another strategy is to use a map of the world to make association in the matter. The last teacher also uses a world map to increase understanding and when she does it she take the opportunity to repeat the continents and countries. She also seems to have a strategy of using the social science lesson to train students to a suitable behaviour. Previous research shows, among other things, that social science is an invisible subject and that it works as a support to the other socially oriented subjects. In my study, I can see parts of that invisibility, but I can also see that social science is it’s own subject and a very living one.

Virginia Counselors' Engagement with Social Issues Advocacy for Black/African American Clients/Students in Various Workplace Settings

Gomez Beane, Dannette 01 May 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of how Virginia counselors engage in social issues advocacy, specifically advocacy for Black/African American clients/students. Racial Identity (Helms, 1993) and Multicultural Social Justice Counseling Competencies (Ratts, Singh, Nassar-McMillan, Butler, and McCullough, 2016) are used as the framework. The researcher examined whether the work setting of a counselor impacts the amount and type of involvement with race-specific advocacy and how counselors are supported as advocates in that setting. Data was collected via information questionnaires including demographic and professional background, attitudes and beliefs captured by the Social Issues Advocacy Scale, and race-specific advocacy activity. The sample included Masters-holding professional counselors practicing in Virginia and who are members of professional organizations based in Virginia. Results indicate reasons for advocating, when applicable, with or on behalf of Black/African American clients/students and a relationship with workplace setting type. Findings show that counselors feel supported by their workplace to advocate on the basis of race, however the type of advocacy varies. / Ph. D.

How do news issues help frame telenovela plots?: a framing analysis of Brazilian print national press and TV Globo’s 8 p.m. telenovela Duas caras [Two faced/s]

Cantrell, Tania Heather 01 June 2010 (has links)
This study examines how news issues help frame telenovela plots and compares how the print media and telenovelas frame several key social and political issues. Secondary systematic sampling of the Brazilian leading daily newspaper O Jornal do Brasil and newsmagazine Veja/Veja-Rio from January 2007 to April 2008 generated 313 news stories along with 292 photos for analysis. A five-composite week sample of TV Globo’s 8 p.m. hit telenovela Duas Caras resulted in 31 episodes — including its premiere and finale — or a total of 1,051 scenes to explore. Applying framing theory (Reese, 2003) through a reciprocal and dynamic comparative narrative analysis (Berger, 2005; Berger, 1997) to this body of materials suggests the telenovela, compared to news, is a more progressive storyteller with regard to race, class and gender news issues. Salient latent news frames The Government is the family and Brazilian democracy is more social than racial emerge from this study’s news portion. These are compared with the emergent salient latent novela frames Family first, family forever and It’s not the position that rules, but the influence. For the first time in TV Globo’s history, an Afro-Brazilian is an 8 p.m. telenovela hero. In addition, Duas Caras highlights his successful municipal election campaign, right around the time municipal election campaigns in Brazil were gearing up and while U.S. citizens were considering then electing their first Afro- American president. Duas Caras also sanitizes favelas, or Brazilians shantytowns, contrasting the fictive locale of Portelinha against marginalized portrayals of favelas and their residents in the news. In a diversifying media environment where lines between fact and fiction are increasingly less apparent, Brazilian (alternative) news studies, such as social marketing themes in telenovelas, are critical measures of the state of media opening in Brazil (Porto, 2007). They also reveal from which source(s) Brazilians receive their news information, raising the question, Do telenovelas help frame news issues? / text

Fink, Júlia Daher 11 March 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-29T13:17:52Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Julia Daher Fink.pdf: 947689 bytes, checksum: 7db281da6d814b43304132833fa89321 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-03-11 / Although Skinner created a science which serves as an analytical and pragmatical tool towards relevant changes for the improvement of human living conditions and dedicated part of his work discussing problems of Western culture, the author and behavior analysis are accused to be in service of reactionary interests. In order to investigate Brazilian researchers' approach to social issues, this study examined sixty-four articles available in four specific behavior analysis journals: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Comportamental e Cognitiva (RBTCC), Revista Brasileira de Análise do Comportamento (REBAC), Revista Psicolog (Psicolog) and Perspectivas em Análise do Comportamento (Perspectivas). To ensure that relevant articles to the topic would be selected, a list of key terms was extracted from government projects, OSCIPs' listing and social movements. Articles were categorized according to type, subject, population and setting, but also according to questions that verified important points about the behavior analysts social commitment. Results showed that few texts (15.6%) are related to social problems. Although application reports were prevalent, a wide range of text types was found. The most addressed subject was education. The majority of application reports and basic researches used students or individuals with developmental disabilities or disorders. The latter noted as a longstanding interest in behavior analysis. Considering social commitment to be a series of behaviors, we note that the behavior analyst has shown major social concerns, like conducting research intended to enhance technology in educational practice in low-income populations. In the same way we found reports where interventions were made to train the population in order to maintain positive results even in the absence of the researcher.

Analyse des enjeux sociaux du sport-loisir au Cameroun à l'ère de la mondialisation / Sport and society in African context. Analysis of the social stakes of the leisure sport in Cameroon at the time of the globalization

Manirakiza, Désiré 20 September 2013 (has links)
Meanwhile the dominant sociology assumes that globalization generates astandardization process of sports cultures, in one hand, and that postmodern societies are onlypracticing leisure in a free and disinterested spirit in another hand, this thesis is structuredaround the main idea that such an analytical trends are not adequate in Africa globally and inCameroon in particular for two reasons at least. Firstly, even if the globalization’s effects onCameroonian sports is not to be denied, the study of sports activities in their nationalspecificities and given the singularities of the practices displays the fact that, as a total socialphenomenon, sport always carries the brand of the society where it takes place. Secondly, inless developed countries as in Cameroon case, sport leisure, in the extend that it generates thecontact between numerous actors with different social statuses, can’t be separated from thedaily problems experienced by individuals involved. It is moreover a social resource andcould be totally understood only if it is examined in it outcomes in terms of relations, socialnetworks, exchange of capitals, etc. Taking root in an interactionist perspective, andexploiting both a quantitative and qualitative methodology, observing the Cameroonian sportleisure led to notice that the practice of collective sport, as football, basketball and theweekend race, is not motivated by the mere needs of leisure and entertainment. It is also anarena (in the military and sociological extend) where actors endowed with calculatingrationalities are confronting themselves

Tolerance: Challenge, Perception, and Social Stigmas Defined through Visual Communications.

Bryant, Ursula Moore 05 May 2007 (has links)
My explorations and journey through life have led me to discover a connection in my work and responsibility as a visual communicator. My objective of communicating challenge, perception, and social stigmas through informed stories of individual lives is to provoke questions and spark moments of awareness in viewers. With this supporting manuscript, I hope to inform about my motivations through time including my personal, artistic, and historical influences. I will define graphic design as a fine art through the evaluation of artistic movements. I also intend to discuss design as a language and build a case for social awareness. Evaluating the process of my work will enlighten the technical aspects of my unique aesthetic and prove the success of my intention.

Humor-Centered Design: Using Humor as a Rhetorical Approach in Design

Delaney, Chelsey 01 May 2011 (has links)
My thesis pursues the development of a tool to empower designers and non-designers to better understand humor’s function in design and to encourage the use of humor as a rhetorical device to undertake social problems. Humor research is a field that is largely based on linguistic studies, but because of its multidisciplinary stretch in the past decade has displayed a broad rhetorical influence; however, it has yet to form a substantial relationship with design. Through a literature review of linguistic, rhetorical, and design theories, I identified a set of heuristics that guide how humor should operate in design. I then tested the effectiveness of the heuristics, and with their final revision, applied them to designing for motivational problems associated with public displays of political mobilization. My user research inferred the creation of a mobile instructional tool that guides the collaborative and/or individual production of political communication artifacts (e.g. rally signs), which use humor to confront socially complex issues. The artifacts’ implicit intent is to motivate political mobilization and to found and/or empower communities. My project focus entails the creation and testing of the tool on the individual level. Whether the artifacts created produce the desired effect regarding mobilization and community strength is unknown; Future work should lend itself to testing humorous design’s effect on political mobilization and ability to empower communities.
