Foreign language learner identity : a sociocultural perspectiveJohnson, Tomieca René 25 July 2011 (has links)
Second language acquisition has seen a shift toward sociocultural approaches over the past fifteen years (Block, 2007). Sociocultural theory (Offord, 2005), language socialization (Schieffelin and Ochs, 1986), and “communities of practice” (Lave and Wenger, 1991) highlight how language learner identity, like language itself, is both socially and individually constructed. As learners acquire a foreign language, they also gain a new awareness of who and how they are—they develop a second language (L2) self (Granger, 2004). How language learners identify themselves depends on contextual factors (Norton, 1995). This report focuses on how language learner social identity is negotiated in three contexts: the foreign language classroom, the study abroad setting, and in face-to-face interactions. / text

Sociocultural Identification with the United States and English Pronunciation Comprehensibility and Accent Among International ESL StudentsMulder, Christinah Paige 01 March 2019 (has links)
Sociocultural identity is defined for this study as the element of identity affixed to a social or cultural group. Previous research on sociocultural identity has recognized the need for further study of its effect on second language performance, particularly pronunciation. Previous studies have found contradictory results when studying the relationships between sociocultural identity and various measures of second language pronunciation. This thesis takes a quantitative correlational approach to the study of sociocultural identification with the United States and English pronunciation comprehensibility and accent in a group of 68 international students learning English in the United States. Participants completed a survey indicating the strength of their identification with the United States, after which a group of three native speaking raters rated speech samples from the participants for both comprehensibility and accent. Scores from the identity survey were compared with those on the comprehensibility and accent ratings through a FACET analysis. Results showed no correlation between sociocultural identification with the United States and ESL pronunciation in either comprehensibility or accent. These results add further complexity to existent scholarship on identity and pronunciation and lead to a discussion of implications for future study.

Intégration et préservation de l’identité nationale dans l’Union européenne / Integration and Preservation for National Identities in the European UnionLaithier, Lucie 08 December 2015 (has links)
How should the clause of national identity, inserted by the Maastricht Treaty within the Treaty on European Union, be understood? In its shorter version, this clause provides that “the Union shall respect the national identities of its Member States”. This study, focused on the sociocultural interpretation of the clause, proposes to examine its legal scope. In that matter, the European integration maintains an ambivalent relationship with collective identity: while circumscribing legally the way that the Member States define their own national identity – the principle of their unity –, it is not aimed at establishing a European substitutive identity, and this statement raises the question of the founding principles of the European democracy. In the opposite movement, the national identities of the Member States also have an impact on the integration process: they represent a substantive limit, though imprecise, to the economic and political integration. Having a weak incidence on the division of competence between the EU and the Member States, the national identity of the Member States constitutes in contrast a powerful obstacle to the democratization of the EU. This is precisely one of the major challenges of the European construction: if it follows the political path of integration, it will require the conceptualization of the grounds of a multinational democracy. For this purpose, in the European context and from a legal point of view, as a clause of articulation between the universal and the particular, the clause of national identity would deserve to be specified in its sociocultural content and to be used as a principle guiding the delimitation of competence of the EU.

The presuppositions of this study address the political and intellectual trajectory of Oliveira Silveira based on an anthropological perspective. This study takes into consideration that he is a contemporary intellectual that provides a meaningful contribution to the update of the Brazilian social thought, through the presentation of counter-narratives related to the black presence in the country. The many places that Oliveira Silveira occupies stimulated the reflection about the identity crossings from which he is constituted in the person-character, narrated by his interlocutors.Taking as a guide to the discussions that focus on updating the anthropological field in theoretical-methodological terms, it was adopted in this study the perspectives of Sahlins (1990), Tunner (2005) e Gonçalves (2010), authors that think the relation between action and structure, as well as the place of the individual in the cultural life. In this study, it was incorporated the perspective of Said (1993) who discusses the role of the contemporary intellectual. Studies on convergent elements of the post-colonial period were also consulted in order to place Oliveira Silveira as a diasporic intellectual with a hybrid identity represented though the simultaneous articulation of his regional and black identity. In this study, it is intended to describe this displacement lived by Oliveira Silveira in the physical as well as in the symbolic way. This was the proponent of November twentieth as the date of greatest meaning to the black history of the country, being also active in black organizations, such as: clubs, samba schools and congadas. Besides, he has organized many groups in the capital, the first of them, the group Palmares and after the group Semba, Razão Negra, Revista Tição and Associação Negra de Cultura. All these organizations were lead by Oliveira Silveira and aimed at the political fight and to the promotion of the black culture. These dissertations aim at showing how different people, at different moments, understood, made sense and valued the intellectual trajectory of this activist. The choice of the topic of this study brings, a priori in an implicit way, the observation of the meaningful role played by Oliveira Silveira. This research aimed at identifying how each one chose to narrate their perception and comprehension related to the trajectory of Oliveira Silveira.

La importancia de la lengua en la percepción de la identdidad en la Comunidad Valenciana : La zona rural vs la zona urbana / The importance of the language in the perception of identity in the region of ValenciaGadea, Marisa January 2013 (has links)

Women On Trial: Translating Femininity Through JournalismOllayos, William B 11 July 2017 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is on cultural translation as a means of understanding the relationship between sociocultural identity with respect to bourgeois white female sexuality and interpretations by news journalists, writers and filmmakers. The thesis brings translation scholar Lawrence Venuti’s description of foreign and domestic texts (2008) into conversation with Catherine Cole’s analysis of journalists as active interpreters of newsworthy events (2010) to support my view of the media as a translator of sociocultural identity. The thesis outlines the construction of bourgeois white femininity within the U.S. imaginary and a more detailed account of its direct impact upon journalistic production and reception. I accomplish this by analyzing the media treatment of two white females accused of murder whose criminal cases were brought into the public eye: Aileen Wuornos and Amanda Knox. I examine sociocultural expectations within the United States, as reflected in journalistic accounts, regarding appropriate ‘performances’ of bourgeois white femininity. Referring to the construction of bourgeois white femininity as a performative framework, I track its fabrication in media headlines, televised reports and articles of the Wuornos and Knox cases from sources like The New Yorker, Time, CNN and Fox News. My aim is to discover the different ideations, or translations, of this performative framework in written journalism and consider the repercussions of deviating from social expectations of bourgeois white womanhood. I then examine documentaries and televised interviews of Wuornos and Knox (from the Discovery Channel, ABC News, Netflix and other sources) where the same performative framework appears within their cinematic depictions. My findings regarding the journalistic translations of bourgeois white femininity reveal a particular form of weaponization of the news media in U.S. society with respect to white women. I extend my discussion to a review of the 2016 presidential election and Democratic party candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton’s own vexing position within the news media as a bourgeois white woman who, throughout the campaign, was accused of criminal activity. By scrutinizing the proliferation of this particular performative framework by the media, I press for more reflective and unbiased journalistic coverage of women in the future.
