This study examined the concept of "wisdom" from the perspective of "sophiology"--a current in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Russian religious philosophy--particularly as it was used in the writings of Vladimir Solovyov, Pavel Florensky, and Sergius Bulgakov. The purpose of the study was to examine how the sophiological perspective as developed in these authors could inform an understanding of "wisdom" in the field of adult learning. The nature of "wisdom" has been one of the major themes in both Eastern and Western traditions of philosophical and theological thought for thousands of years. In the mid-nineteenth century, however, the epistemological tendency to approach the world exclusively from the standpoint of observation and experiment reduced "wisdom" to nothing more than technical knowledge verified by experience. The concept/construct of wisdom, however, has been experiencing resurgence in the social sciences, including the field of adult learning. My research did not, however, find an instance in which the sophiological perspective had informed the field's understanding of wisdom. For this reason, the perspective of sophiology and its potential contribution to adult learning offered a unique research opportunity. In this study, I sought to add another dimension to the already multi-faceted nature of wisdom in the field of adult learning. I also hoped to enhance the value of sophiological thought by demonstrating its application to a field with which it had not been previously associated. I sought to accomplish these objectives using the method of hermeneutics, an interpretive mode of inquiry with both reproductive and productive aspects. The reproductive aspect established the historical and philosophical context of the three thinkers and discussed how their sophiological texts aided an understanding of their thought as a whole, and vice versa. The productive aspect explored applications of sophiological thought to the field of adult learning. Since I was the "research instrument" for the study, I also introduced the reader to aspects of my own background and experience that prepared me for this interpretive inquiry. / Ph. D.

No clima de coerção e censura em que vivia a sociedade portuguesa durante o período ditatorial, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen assinalou a marca de sua oposição ao regime salazarista em numerosos poemas e contos, desse modo incorporando as contradições da vida social em sua obra. Suas iniciativas não estancaram nesse campo, pois Sophia se envolveu na realidade dos conflitos mediante uma atuação direta em âmbito político, que se deu antes e depois do 25 de abril de 1974. Eis o objetivo desta tese: estudar como se desenvolveu a trajetória militante antifascista de Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, inscrevendo sua participação ao lado de outras vozes femininas que se empenharam contra o regime e nesse sentido pretende-se também fazer um contributo à história das mulheres. O ano de partida é 1958, quando ela rompeu com o regime salazarista, em sintonia com um movimento mais amplo de oposição, o dos chamados católicos progressistas. Observando criticamente os desmandos do regime e as desigualdades sociais que durante sua vigência só faziam aumentar, em especial mediante as mobilizações efetivadas por Dom António Ferreira Gomes, o Bispo do Porto, e o padre Abel Varzim, Sophia escreve O jantar do bispo, e neste doutorado a análise apresentada sobre essa narrativa aborda não somente os dilemas que afetam as personagens principais, mas igualmente as secundárias, as que no estatuto social encontram-se numa posição de subalternidade, atentando para uma reflexão em diferentes níveis a que é chamado o leitor do conto. Outras formas assumidas pela militância antifascista da poeta, reunida a outros intelectuais em oposição ao salazarismo, foram os abaixo-assinados, e relativamente a eles nos debruçamos buscando explicitar o teor de denúncia e mobilização que encerraram, assim como apresentamos um recorte político das cartas trocadas por Sophia e seu amigo Jorge de Sena. Na perspectiva de abarcar um leque mais amplo do engajamento político de Sophia, valendo-nos da metodologia da história oral, fizemos entrevistas com figuras que com ela conviveram ou dela estiveram próximos. Isso possibilitou melhor compreender os significados de seu desempenho cívico em entidades como o Centro Nacional de Cultura (CNC), a Comissão Nacional de Socorro aos Presos Políticos (CNSPP), a Associação Portuguesa de Escritores (APE); e o percurso de sua consciência crítica que se intensificou ao longo dos anos, tendo sido candidata pela Comissão Eleitoral de Unidade Democrática (CEUD) nas eleições legislativas de 1969, além de ter participado na Vigília de São Domingos e na Vigília da Capela do Rato. Após a Revolução de Abril de 1974, integrou-se ao Partido Socialista, foi eleita deputada da Assembleia Constituinte (1975-1976), tema de nossa investigação por meio dos discursos que ela proferiu naquela casa. Assim, tomando o conjunto desses assuntos mediante uma sequência cronológica, procedemos a uma análise em que buscamos demonstrar de que maneira Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen firmou seu ativismo antifascista, tanto por meio da escrita literária como pelo desempenho em frentes políticas, não se furtando ao compromisso dos problemas de seu tempo. / Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen made her mark against Salazars regime and the coercion and censorship characteristic of the dictatorship in Portugal. In many of her poems and short stories, she succeeded in incorporating the contradictions of social life as she saw them. She did more, though, taking part in the political confrontations before and after April 25th, 1974. The aim of the present work is to focus on Sophia de Mello Breyners antifascist militant activities side by side with other women who fought against the regime, thus contributing with a chapter to womens history. Sophia made the first step in 1958 by speaking out against the regime and adhering to the progressive Catholics, a large spectrum opposition movement. She observed critically the regimes many missteps as well as the growth of social inequalities in the country. She followed the mobilizations called by Bishop António Ferreira Gomes, the Bishop of Porto, and Father Abel Varzim, synthesizing her perceptions in the short novel \"The bishops dinner\", hereby analyzed through the quandaries the main characters find themselves in and the social differences the secondary characters make explicit to the readers. The poet, together with other intellectuals, signed important expostulations against Salazarism, which are here explained in their criticism and call for mobilization. She exchanged many letters with her friend Jorge de Sena, by which we can point to her political actions. We also interviewed people who knew her well to clarify her political positions making use of the methodology of oral history. The interviews allowed us a better understanding of her work at CNC-Centro Nacional de Cultura (National Center for Culture), as a member of CNSPP-Comissão Nacional de Socorro aos Presos Políticos (National Committee for Help to Political Prisoners), at APE-Associação Portuguesa de Escritores (Portuguese Writers Association), and the intensification of her political involvement by becoming a candidate by the CEUD-Comissão Eleitoral de Unidade Democrática (Electoral Committee for Democratic Union) at the 1969 local elections. After the Revolution of Abril 1974, she became a member of the PS-Partido Socialista (Socialist Party) and was elected as congresswoman for the Constituent Assembly (1975-1976), which we analyze by means of her speeches at that house. The sum of the themes we study, presented in chronological order, help us demonstrate how Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen exercised her activism, by her pen and her political engagement, facing with courage the problems of her time.

[pt] Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen publicou, em 1983, Navegações, um volume com vinte e cinco poemas, datados de 1977 a 1982, em torno da temática dos descobrimentos marítimos. Partindo da constatação de que esse livro desenvolve um tema há muito em formação na obra da autora, abordamos neste estudo, no entendimento dos textos poético, quatro questões que julgamos fundamentais: a escolha de uma temática tão controversa no período após a Revolução dos Cravos, de redefinição de Portugal; o intrincado jogo de intertextualidades e referências históricas dos poemas; a importância da presença de mapas quinhentistas na primeira edição do conjunto; a concepção de olhar presente nos poemas. / [en] In 1983, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen published Navegações, a book containing twenty-five poems written between from 1977 and 1982 about the Portuguese maritime discoveries. Considering this book as a development of a theme Andresen had long been nurturing in her preview works, in our reading of these poetic texts we focus on four essential issues: the choice of such a controversial subject shortly after the 1974 revolution in Portugal; the intertextuality of these poems and the historical references in them; the significance of the sixteenth- century maps reproduced in the first edition; the concept of gaze as it appears in these poems.

M.Tech. (Fine Art) / In this study, I explore the way in which materials and biomorphic forms are used in selected artworks to convey aspects of gendered and cultural identity constructs. This is done with specific reference to Nicholas Hlobo’s work and to the artwork I produce as part of the practical component of my research. I have chosen Hlobo’s installation Izithunzi (2009) because it is a pertinent example of the way in which he uses biomorphic form and typifies his use of materials, both of which have some similarities to my work. Although Hlobo’s use of materials is widely discussed in the available literature on his work, little has been written on his use of biomorphic form. To address this gap in the literature, I look specifically at how Hlobo uses biomorphic form in Izithunzi to represent what I argue to be the hybridity of his gendered and cultural identity. In the practical component, I present a series of sculptures made from second-hand furniture, polystyrene, concrete, plastic, stuffing, fabric, thread, steel pipe and fibreglass. As Hlobo does in Izithunzi, I consciously make reference to biomorphic forms.

We select writings from all the poetic work of the two poets studied, we analyze also tales and children’s narratives by Sophia and interviews, translations and research of Dora, texts that help to understand the subject proposed. Carl Gustav Jung, Gaston Bachelard, Mircea Eliade and Gilbert Durand were some experts of Theory of the Imaginary that we use to understand the presence of sacred in the verses of poets, as well as Joseph Campbell and his studies about the journey and the pilgrim who embarks on this journey. Other academics that research the poetic works of the poets and symbolic hermeneutics scholars also contributed to the composition of this study. The beginning of the journey towards the sacred is when the lyrical subject in Dora and Sophia observe the degraded, chaotic and desecrated world in which they live and they realize how much people have gotten away from the true essence of things, from the purity, from the truth, from the ancient and from the eternal. We analyze the archetype of the trip, because the hero, the pilgrim, leaves his home environment for an adventure in search of self, of self-knowledge, of the Other, of the sacred. This is in the nature, in trees, in gardens, in lakes, in rivers, in seas, in animals, in the most secret woods, in the purest nights. When they look all this for the first time, the lyrical subject in the poems by Dora and Sophia seeks the true essence and purity of each place. And both strive to make a return to the one and sovereign God. And this, we believe, is the final stage of the journey of initiation. There, in that place of full unity, only would enter those who know your selves - and who know their limitations and their human error -, and those who value and have a full acceptance of the sacred. This would be the stage for which, apparently, the lyrical subjects don’t feel ready. They don’t see perfectly God, but they clearly understand that is for there that they must go, because arrive there would be the fullness, the completeness and the life. / Esta tese tem por objetivo o estudo das manifestações do sagrado na poesia de Dora Ferreira da Silva e Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. Selecionamos escritos de toda a obra poética das duas poetas estudadas, e nos valemos também da análise de contos e histórias infantis de Sophia e entrevistas, traduções e estudos de Dora, textos que contribuíram para aprofundar o tema proposto. Carl Gustav Jung, Gaston Bachelard, Mircea Eliade e Gilbert Durand foram alguns estudiosos da teoria do imaginário em que nos embasamos para interpretar a presença do sagrado nos versos das poetas, além de Joseph Campbell e seus estudos sobre a viagem e o peregrino que empreende essa jornada. Outros pesquisadores das obras das poetas e estudiosos de hermenêutica simbólica também colaboraram na composição deste estudo. O início do percurso rumo ao sagrado se dá quando os sujeitos líricos em Dora e em Sophia observam o mundo degradado, caótico e dessacralizado em que vivem e constatam o quanto os homens se afastaram da verdadeira essência das coisas, da pureza, da verdade, do antigo e do eterno. Analisamos o arquétipo da viagem, pois o herói, o peregrino, deixa o seu ambiente natal para uma aventura em busca de si-mesmo, do autoconhecimento, do Outro, do sagrado. Esse está na natureza, nas árvores, nos jardins, nos lagos, nos rios, nos mares, nos animais, nos bosques mais secretos, nas noites mais puras. Ao olhar tudo isso pela primeira vez, o sujeito lírico, nos poemas de Dora e Sophia, busca a essência verdadeira e a pureza de cada ambiente. E ambas empenham um retorno rumo ao Deus uno e soberano. E este, acreditamos, ser o estágio final do percurso iniciático. Ali, nesse lugar de unidade plena, só conseguem entrar os que se conhecem – sabendo de suas limitações e falhas humanas – e os que valorizam e possuem uma aceitação plena do sagrado. Este seria o estágio para o qual, aparentemente, ambas não se sentem prontas. Os sujeitos líricos, na poesia de Dora e de Sophia, embora não visualizem em perfeição Deus, entendem claramente que é para ali que devem caminhar, que chegar ali seria a plenitude, a completude e a vida.

To that end, the poet’s “A poesia de Cecília Meireles”, “Miguel Torga, os homens e a terra”, and “Luís de Camões: ensombramento e descobrimento” are the bases upon which this dissertation will be presented, as a way of showing how Andresen interpreted certain poets’ poetry and why she read it. At the same time, I will examine the essay as a specific production and particularly Andresen’s work in the field as a reflective and creative setting for lyricism itself. Furthermore, I aim to look into the echo of Andresen’s voice among the poets she addresses, i.e., to analyze how some of the subjects she cherishes within other authors’ oeuvre can be noticed in her own poetics
