Experience of landscape : understanding responses to landscape design and exploring demands for the future

Ward Thompson, Catharine Joan January 2010 (has links)
The research that forms this thesis is a portfolio of seven published papers together with a critical review, set out below, which gives a general overview of all the work. The work covers a period from the 1990s until 2008, with publication dates spanning a decade. The research has developed from an early interest in exploring the nature of landscape experience, responses to past and contemporary landscape designs, and what benefits people might gain from engaging with such landscapes. It has also reflected a desire to raise standards of scholarship and research in landscape architecture. The portfolio of work addresses three broad themes, interconnected but requiring different approaches in terms of method: the distinctiveness of place and design responses to it; design of public open space for the 21st century; and understanding people’s engagement with the natural environment. The research addresses the following questions and is presented under these headings, each representing a different strand or focus of attention. a) History, prototypes and local distinctiveness: what is the role of historic design prototypes in contemporary landscape architecture and how can an understanding of them enhance sensitivity to local distinctiveness in new design? b) Urban open space: how can an understanding of the history of landscape design inform the way urban open space is designed, planned and managed in the 21st century and what new paradigms might there be? c) Experiencing the landscape: how do people perceive, use and respond to green landscapes in their local environment, and what factors influence engagement with and benefit from such natural environments? The outputs in this portfolio are shown to have influenced other researchers as well as policy makers and practitioners; they are reflected in citations of the work and in government agency initiatives to develop new approaches to accessing the landscape. Finally, a conceptual framework is offered for understanding and responding to people’s diverse experiences of landscape.

Roman Urban Space Framed By Colonnades: Mediating Between Myth, Memory And History In Ephesus

Yoncaci, Pelin 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
A multi-layered analysis on the morphological development of Ephesus in relation to the Temple of Artemis and an investigative wandering through the streets of this city in the era of Roman Empire highlights this thesis characterized by a consistent search for the significance of the notion of urban armature. From the standpoint of those who lived at that time, special attention is directed toward the colonnaded avenues as well as to their formal and social impacts within the city fabric. The thesis re-reads Ephesus within two main parts / first the urban form in relation to the topographical provision and sacred landscape provided by the site itself / and then from the ground level through a walking trip of the city as it appeared in the second century A.D. Crucial to this visual experience is the semantic quality of the environment at a collective level since the meaning of the experience would be useless without considering the meaning of signs and symbols within the environment. Thus, bounding ancient society and urban space at the phenomenological level, the small trip starts at the harbor and concludes at the Temple of Artemis, the irrefutable symbol of Ephesus and the most revered shrine in Asia Minor.

The writer understood socioeconomic cultural inequalities inherent to the increasing inclusion of the country in the capitalist economy, integrating the most remote corners of the country to the frenzy of the offer, the demand and the competition, through temporal concepts, highlighting the different cadences of the transformation of the Brazilian society. According to this view, the past is something anachronistic, backward and obsolete; the future is “tomorrow”, the modern and the progress. There was a tension between the space of experience related to the caboclos from blackland, “dead cities” and the misery in the backlands and the horizon of expectation represented by the sequence of technological developments, the North American advance and Henry Ford’s principles of prosperity according to Reinhart Koselleck’ s categories. So, I investigate the elaborate projects in order to cadence the time of the nation and finally build the imagined community called Brazil as a nation where the “jecas” would be integrated to the progress through new conditions of work. Monteiro Lobato, through the fictional universe of the Yellow Woodpecker Farm, (re)connected past/future or traditional/modern, removing unethical aspects of these concepts and finding their synthesis. Monteiro Lobato’s complete works constitute the sources of this dissertation as his short stories, novel, journalistic texts, stories and texts about art critic.

Conception of past, present and future in the first apology of Justin Martyr: A vision of historical time in the 2nd century D.C.

Because he does not agree with this, he exposes his arguments in favor of Christians. In order to strengthen his argument, Justin brings us past and contemporary events and relies on his eschatological hopes. The use of temporalities in his arguments led us to ask how he understood his present time. Based on the historical time of definition proposed by Reinhart Koselleck, we set out to analyze the First Apology to understand Justin's look towards his own time. We look after, in this way, to try to understand what factors underlie his tension, which would explain its vision of the world. In the search for a better understanding of these factors, we propose three steps: To broaden the knowledge about our source through the study of its form and content to analyze the most present intertextuality in his work (his conception of prophet and prophecy from Judeo-Christian literature) and, finally, the way he dealt with past, present, and future temporalities.

Prostor / Space

Letochová, Martina January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the theme of urban space in all its parts, which consist of personal interpretation and definition of urban space. In theory, it deals with different approaches to defining cities and states the view on a city as a spatial arrangement. It also briefly deals with historical and urbanistic development of the cities of Karvina and Prague. The theme of urban space is further elaborated toward the philosophical and psychological experience of cities and the phenomenon of genius loci, both in general and specific terms of each individual city. The urbanistic theme is also elaborated from the perspective of art, focusing on traditional techniques and the work of Czech artists. The starting point for the didactic part are the theoretical pieces of knowledge and expert experience of my own creative activities with an emphasis on my experience of cities and their creative representation. The starting point of the theoretical and teaching part is the part that is the most important one - the practical part - which defines the subjective relationship with cities, inspirational artistic influences and the creative process. My work of art consists of a series of drawings of larger and smaller formats. The basic principle is a diptych in black and white which defines and reflects my personal...

Metod, personlighet och forskning : Kontinuitet och förändring i vårdlärarutbildarnas kunskapskultur 1958-1999 / Method, personality and research. Continuity and change in the knowledge culture of nursing teacher educators 1958-1999

Eliasson, Eva January 2009 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on continuity and change in a local knowledge culture, the nursing teacher education in Stockholm, during the years between 1958 and 1999, with a strong emphasis on conceptions of knowledge and learning. Concepts of analysis come from Basil Bernstein, Ludwik Fleck, Reinhart Koselleck and gender theory. The study is based on archived documents and interviews with nursing teacher educators. The results show continuity as well as change of the knowledge culture. The first period, 1958-1974, shows continuity in relation to the space of experience. Methodical knowledge is important. The second time period, 1975-1978, is characterized by great changes, starting with a distinct break when prior conceptions and values are discarded. The focus on important, external knowledge of the earlier period is replaced by the conception that the human being and her inner abilities and characteristics are the most important resources for the profession. Conceptions and values are not completely abandoned during the last time period, 1979-1999. Values connected to personality development remain, but new values appear as a consequence of state governance towards research basis. The spirit of time, new co-workers, changed state governance, the ideological characteristics of values as well as a female dominance within the education allow an understanding of the great change in conceptions and values in the middle of the 1970’s.  A stable staff of nursing teacher educators, the specific ideological and gender coded features of the values and a traditional distinctiveness and separation from other teacher education programs allow an understanding of the stability of the personality development element. The male gender coding of the content during the first period could be understood by the influence of physicians on the education, state governance towards education technology and harmony with the space of experience. During the whole of the studied time period, there are female coded conceptions regarding the work of the nursing teacher educators; collectivity, emphasis on practical action and control of - closeness to the student group. / När praktikgrundad kunskap möter högskolan

[en] MODERNISMS IN INCIPIENT MODERNITIES: MÁRIO DE ANDRADE AND ALMADA NEGREIROS / [pt] MODERNISMOS EM MODERNIDADES INCIPIENTES: MÁRIO DE ANDRADE E ALMADA NEGREIROS

DANIEL MARINHO LAKS 12 August 2016 (has links)
[en] Modernisms in incipient modernities: Mário de Andrade and Almada Negreiros. The objective of the present work is to discuss the modernist aesthetical proposals from Mário de Andrade and Almada Negreiros as specific responses to an experience of civilizational crisis. This understanding of the time as a period of historical shift produced different proposals based on diverse expectations of future. This approach is based on the prerogative that the artistic representation presents itself intimately related to the perception of space-time and its relations with the bodies. The modernism, as symbolic form, is intimately related to a significant change in space-time perception. However, the dialetic between artistic movement (modernism) and experience of space (modernity) produced in the literary critique an evaluation of modernism as a cultural response to the experience of modernity. This reading in related to a understanding of modernity as a continuous line of technological, social and economical advances that occurred in centers and spread to the peripheries. From this interpretation concept such as late modernism, peripheral modernism and cultural delay were produced. The present analysis intend to situate the doctrines and aesthetical practices grouped under the concept of modernism in relation to the internal conjunctures of each country and the international conjunctures in a complex map of geopolitical coordinates. Thereunto, the Thesis structure itself in four fundamental supporting pillars: Moderns, modernities and modernisms; Futurist?! Searching for a modern expression of nationality; Modernisms in incipient modernities: the insufficiency of characteristic inventions from the second industrial revolution in the prosaic narratives from Mário de Andrade and Almada Negreiros; Modernism and New States: the projects of cultural transformation in the political field of Salazarism and Varguism. From these topics the work intends to associate modernism, not with a dynamic that rise in the centers and spread to the peripheries as application of a foreign speech, but rather as the constitution of a problematic that produced e diverse investigations in the lathing among culture, politics and arts.
