Bonilla Rubio, Maria Andrea January 2016 (has links)
The present study investigates the biosociodemographic characteristics, subjective well-being and some indicators of anxiety, stress and depression of Colombian students in Brazil. 173 graduate students participated (48.6% male, 51.4% female, ages M=30,34 DP=5.13, master = 47.39%, doctorate= 47.39% and post-doctorate= 5.22%) which were recruited by social networks, curriculum platforms and some institutions and programs which promote research. Data collection was conducted through an online survey that included a Biosociodemographic questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Short Form Scale- (DASS-21) Satisfaction with life Scale (SWLS) and of Positive and Negative Affection scale (PANAS). Results presented normal levels of anxiety, stress, depression, positive and negative affect, were found, and in most cases, high life satisfaction. The Student's t and Chi Square tests showed no statistically significant differences for the above variables between masters and doctoral students. These findings provide an initial insight regarding the situation of Colombian students, which can be useful for future support in their academic processes linking to Brazilian universities.

Santos, Bibiana Ramos dos January 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigated the relationship between child subjective well-being and children interpersonal relationships, through four studies: a theoretical, two quantitative and one qualitative. The first study verified the identification of the contribution of interpersonal relationships to child subjective well-being in the selected literature. There were identified in databases SciELO, Web of Science; MEDLINE/Pubmed, PsycINFO, LILACS e PROQUEST, 142 articles, being systematically analysed 26 articles that attended to inclusion criteria. The results point that interpersonal relationships contribute positively to child subjective well-being, being studied mainly the relationships with family, friends and at school. The second and the third studies were realized with 2.280 children aged between 9 and 12 years old (55,5% girls), being apllied the instruments Student Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS), Personal Wellbeing Index School-Children (PWI-SC),and 19 items of satisfaction with family, friends and at school environment. The second study had as objective at verifying subjacent factors between subjective well-being and children’s satisfaction with their interpersonal relationships with family, friends and at school environment. Descriptive analyzes and internal consistency, principal component analysis and multiple regression were performed. The results point that the items of interpersonal relationships grouped in three components related to the family, school and friends, and that the relationships studied can be consider predictors of subjective well-being. The third study sought associate the children satisfaction with their interpersonal relationships with family, friends and school, and their satisfaction with their subjective well-being, considering variables age, gender, school type and city. Descriptive analysis and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were performed. The results point that there is no difference between the satisfaction’s means with the interpersonal relationships by age, and that children living at country towns are more satisfied with their interpersonal relationships. Children who study at private schools are more satisfied with their relationships with family and at school environment, while students from public schools are more satisfied with their friendships; and girls are more satisfied with their relationships at school environment and with friends. The subjective well-being presented reduction with age increased, and boys had subjective well-being means significantly higher than girls did. The children who presented higher subjective well-being means are those who live in country towns and study at public schools, and the ones who live at the capital and study at private schools. The fourth study were realized with 103 children aged between 8 and 12 years old, from public and private schools of Porto Alegre and Santa Maria, and aim to know the perceptions of children about their well-being and their interpersonal relationships. Were performed 10 focus groups, analysed with content analysis. The results of this study reveal 4 subcategories related to relationships characteristics’, that were grouped in 3 major categories: Family, Friends and Other Relationships. The work contributes to the understanding of child perspective about interpersonal relationships, discussing and clarifying aspects that allow the development of more effective interventions and public policies to increase well-being and improving the quality of children interpersonal relationships.

Consommation, territoire d'origine de la marque et bien-être du consommateur / Consumption, brand territory of origin and consumer well-being

Zhang, Mohua 07 March 2016 (has links)
This thesis consists of two main topics: the impact of brand territory of origin (TOO) on consumer behaviour, and the impact of conspicuous consumption on consumer subjective well-being (SWB).On one side, this thesis highlights the importance of territory associations for consumers’ perception of product authenticity and empirically tests the chain of effects, from a TOO association to perceived authenticity to consumers’ self–brand connections. An experimental method and a partial least square (PLS) approach were adopted to test hypotheses with 665 Chinese consumers. Results demonstrate that TOO exerts a positive impact on perceived product authenticity, which improves consumers’ self–brand connections. In addition, compared with country of origin (COO), TOO has a unique positive impact on perceived authenticity and a direct positive effect on consumers’ self–brand connections. Also, the positive impact of TOO on perceived authenticity is enhanced by consumers’ familiarity with the TOO and congruence between the product category and TOO. But only one outcome of TOO (perceived authenticity) and one product category (lavender soap) have been considered in this study. Noting the diminishing relevance of COO associations, this study demonstrates that territory of origin is an appealing alternative strategy for strengthening brand equity. On the other side, despite the growing importance of conspicuous consumption in all parts of the world, little research focuses on the effect of conspicuous consumption on consumer SWB, and when this is the case, the results are controversial. We propose and test a bi-motive hypothesis whereby the valence of the effect of conspicuous consumption on consumer SWB depends on whether the conspicuous object is used as self-signaling conspicuous consumption or other-signaling conspicuous consumption. The results of three studies demonstrate that the self-signaling conspicuous consumer has a significantly higher level of SWB than the other-signaling conspicuous consumer. Furthermore, consumer materialism enhances the negative relationship between other-signaling conspicuous consumption and consumer SWB.

Using computational psychology to profile unhappy and happy people

Samson, Matthew James January 2019 (has links)
Social psychology has a long tradition of studying the personality traits associated with subjective well-being (SWB). However, research often depends on a priori but unempirical assumptions about how to (a) measure the constructs, and (b) mitigate confounded associations. These assumptions have caused profligate and often contradictory findings. To remedy, I demonstrate how a computational psychology paradigm-predicated on large online data and iterative analyses-might help isolate more robust personality trait associations. At the outset, I focussed on univariate measurement. In the first set of studies, I evaluated the extent researchers could measure psychological characteristics at scale from online behaviour. Specifically, I used a combination of simulated and real-world data to determine whether predicted constructs like big five personality were accurate for specific individuals. I found that it was usually more effective to simply assume everyone was average for the characteristic, and that imprecision was not remedied by collapsing predicted scores into buckets (e.g. low, medium, high). Overall, I concluded that predictions were unlikely to yield precise individual-level insights, but could still be used to examine normative group-based tendencies. In the second set of studies, I evaluated the construct validity of a novel SWB scale. Specifically, I repurposed the balanced measure of psychological needs (BMPN), which was originally designed to capture the substrates of intrinsic motivation. I found that the BMPN robustly captured (a) dissociable experiences of suffering and flourishing, (b) more transitive SWB than the existing criterion measure, and (c) unique variation in real-world outcomes. Thus, I used it as my primary outcome. Then, I focussed on bivariate associations. The third set of studies extracted pairs of participants with similar patterns of covarying personality traits-and differing target traits-to isolate less-confounded SWB correlations. I found my extraction method-an adapted version of propensity score matching-outperformed even advanced machine learning alternatives. The final set of studies isolated the subset of facets that had the most robust associations with SWB. It combined real-world surveys with a total of eight billion simulated participants to find the traits most prevalent in extreme suffering and flourishing. For validation purposes, I first found that depression and cheerfulness-the trait components of SWB-were highly implicated in both suffering and flourishing. Then, I found that self-discipline was the only other trait implicated in both forms of SWB. However, there were also domain-specific effects: anxiety, vulnerability and cooperation were implicated in just suffering; and, assertiveness, altruism and self-efficacy were implicated in just flourishing. These seven traits were most likely to be the definitive, stable, drivers of SWB because their effects were totally consistent across the full range of intrapersonal contexts.

Nichanametla Ramasubbaiah, Rakesh Gupta 17 July 2018 (has links)
Welfare economics in a behavioral world is gaining increasing traction for research in economics and social sciences at large. Especially the last three decades, ever more research efforts have been directed to understand welfare better. Social capital has been one of the prime candidates and now a domain of research. Research is undertaken to understand its importance, how it operates, and what impact it has on the well-being of an individual and the health of a society. The capabilities approach developed by Amartya Sen highlights the fundamental role of economic development that focuses on the improving individual capabilities and expanding choice sets of each individual. However, this capability approach is individual-centric and inadvertently leaves out the shared or the collective nature of an individual’s existence. The social networks/interconnectedness is not addressed in the capability approach of Sen. At the same time, the social networks embody the mobilization of individuals in groups, association, and civic action. This aspect is developed by Giraud et al. (2013), called the relational capability approach. Another major research domain that cannot be neglected in the economic or human development evaluation is happiness (or subjective well-being). The concept of subject well-being is closely related to the social capital domain. In the literature, these concepts of social capital, relational capabilities, subjective well-being and development, and especially the linkages between them are not well explored or explicitly studied. This is the primary motivation for this dissertation.

A felicidade revisitada: um estudo sobre bem-estar subjetivo na visão da psicologia positiva / Happiness revisited: a study on subjective well-being according to positive psychology

Graziano, Lilian Domingues 03 February 2005 (has links)
Developed around the medical model, Psychology has directed its scientific efforts principally toward the study of the dysfunctional aspects of human behavior rather than toward the potential of the individual. This has created a disequilibrium in the field of study of this science which by focusing its attention almost exclusively on human problems has relegated themes such as Happiness to the so-called self-help literature. Based on the theoretical reference of Positive Psychology, this study seeks to understand Human Happiness from a scientific point of view. We judge this approach fundamental to the construction of a body of theory consistent with the theme and capable of helping in the development of preventive mental health programs. Therefore, we research the relationship between happiness and control "locus" in a sample of 106 university students, using the Spearman Correlation and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results indicate that the greater the internal control locus of the individuals studied, the greater their level of personal happiness.

Evaluating Positive Psychology Curriculum Among Nontraditional Students in a Foundational Course

Rhodes, Ruth Hilton 01 January 2016 (has links)
Positive psychology emphasizes growth, adaptive functioning, and human potential. The present study contributes to this literature by examining the impact of exposure to a positive psychology curriculum among nontraditional students taking foundational courses in a career college. Mixed methods were utilized to assess changes in student well-being and goal setting quantitatively through pre- and post-tests of the Authentic Happiness Survey and the Satisfaction with Life Scale as well as identifying emergent themes from qualitative analysis of student reflections and written assignments over a 9-week term. Twenty-five students participated in foundational courses, which placed an emphasis on positive psychology. Paired samples t tests, Cohen's d, thematic analysis, and a researcher-designed Likert-scale assessed changes from the beginning of the course to the end among the quantitative and qualitative measures of overall well-being and goal attainment. Some of the notable findings included significantly positive changes in students' reports of authentic happiness, and 76% of students reporting that they had attained an academic, social, and personal goal over the course of the 9-week curriculum. Change in self-reported satisfaction with life approached, but it was not statistically significant. Thus, the implementation of a positive psychology curriculum in a nontraditional student population created positive social change in this particular sector of academia and was associated with increased overall well-being and attainment of goals.

Muliple Roles as Predictors of Subjective Well-Being in African American Women

Green-Davis, Sha-Rhonda Michea 01 January 2016 (has links)
The role strain caused by the multiple roles of some women can impact their stress levels and health outcomes, which negatively affects reported subjective well-being (SWB). The culture and race of African American women has a complex effect on how they experience stress and manage their health. Some research shows the harmful rippling effect of stress for African American women is distinct from other racial groups and men. The purpose of this quantitative archival study was to understand how the SWB of African American women can be predicted by their age, years of education, household income, number of children, and marital, parental, and employment statuses. The theoretical foundation was role strain theory. The archival data set of The National Survey of American Life: Coping with Stress in the 21st Century provided data from African American female respondents ages 18 to 44, (n = 1,877). Multiple linear regression analyses showed that when combined in 2 models; marital, parental, and employment statuses (Model 1) and the remaining four variables (Model 2) were statistically significant predictors of SWB. Separately, parental status, age, years of education, and number of children were not statistically significant predictors of SWB. This study showed that married parents who were employed had higher SWB which suggests increased access to resources. Research shows higher socioeconomic status is correlated to higher SWB. Increased resources may help to reduce the additive impact of juggling multiple roles. This study will contribute to social change by educating women on the connections between balancing roles and happiness and encourage them to negotiate roles and duties to reduce stress and improve their health outcomes.

Effects of a Positive Psychological Intervention on Happiness in At-Risk Students

Harlan, Pamela 01 January 2016 (has links)
Researchers have suggested an increased focus on positive psychological interventions to enhance college students' happiness levels; however, few studies have addressed positive interventions on at-risk college students. Based on the theoretical framework of positive psychology and impact of positive exercises on happiness, this study addressed whether a positive intervention would increase happiness as evidenced by scores on the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). The experimental design included random group assignment and pre- and posttest surveys to collect data from 135 at-risk community college students in Southeast Texas. The experimental group participated in a 1-week intervention consisting of 2 gratitude exercises, and the control group completed early memory journaling. Results indicated significant differences in SWLS and PANAS scores between the two groups with an increase in life satisfaction and positive affect and a decrease in negative affect in the experimental group. Results may be used by institutions seeking positive interventions to increase at-risk college student success and retention.

Unknown Date (has links)
The main purposes of this study were to explore the interactive relationships of undergraduates’ gratitude, social support, coping style, and subjective well-being, and further to examine a path model of these variables. The participants in this study were 750 undergraduate students in Taiwan. Moreover, the employed instruments included the Inventory of Gratitude, the Inventory of Social Support, the Inventory of Coping Style, the Inventory of Subjective Well-being, the gratitude questionnaire-6, and the Inventory of Negative Emotion. The collected data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way MANOVA and SEM. The main findings of this study were as follows: 1. The relationships among demographic variables, gratitude, social support, coping style, and subjective well-being. (1) Areas had no effects on the undergraduates’ gratitude, social support, coping style, and subjective well-being. (2) Undergraduate students from public universities had a higher degree of gratitude and social support than those from private universities. However, no differences were found on coping style and subjective well-being between these two groups. (3) College majors had effects on the undergraduates’ degree of gratitude, social support, coping style, and subjective well-being. (4) While the females had a higher degree of gratitude, social support, and emotion-focused positive coping than the males, the males had a higher degree of problem-focused negative coping than the females. (5) The freshmen had a higher level of informational-tangible social support than the sophomores. However, no differences were found on gratitude, coping style, and subjective well-being among the four grade levels. (6) Religious beliefs had effects on the undergraduates’ gratitude and social support, but did not have effects on their coping style and subjective well-being. 2. The relationships among gratitude, social support, coping style, and subjective well-being. (1) Grateful people had a higher degree of emotional-accompanied and informational-tangible social support than less grateful ones. (2) Grateful people tended to utilize more problem-focused positive coping and emotion-focused positive coping than less grateful ones. However, less grateful people tended to utilize more emotion-focused negative coping than more grateful ones. (3) Grateful people had a higher level of life satisfaction and positive emotion than less grateful ones. (4) While gratitude, social support, and coping style positively influenced the undergraduates’ subjective well-being, gratitude positively influenced their subjective well-being via social support and coping style. In addition, while social support positively influenced their subjective well-being via coping style, coping style also positively influenced subjective well-being via social support. Finally, the researcher proposed some suggestions for education and future research.
