The ability to bounce beyond : the contribution of the school environment to the resilence of Dutch urban middle-adolescents from a low socio-economic background

Enthoven, Margaretha Ewdokija Maria 19 September 2007 (has links)
Pupils from a low SES differ in their development within the same school context. It is argued that the mechanisms through which education and the school environment as a whole can contribute to the successful development of children from a low SES should be identified and mapped. Therefore a focus on the mechanisms that lead to children with a low SES succeeding, in addition to discussing the reasons for these children not succeeding is proposed. The present research is drawn upon bio-ecological and symbolic interactionist theories of human development in an effort to understand resilience as involving person-context transactions. Specifically, the resilience of adolescents in the school context is studied as a joint function of personal characteristics and social contextual affordances that either promote or thwart the development of person-level, resilient-enhancing characteristics. The study employed inductive as well as deductive methods for knowledge development. Firstly, the concept of “resilience” was defined and operationalized in a Resilience Questionnaire (VVL). This questionnaire was validated on 399 middle-adolescents from five Educational Opportunity Schools in the Netherlands. Secondly, the inductive “Grounded Theory” method was followed with 21 middle-adolescents from three of the five Educational Opportunity Schools. In answer to the main question “How does the school environment contribute to the resilience of middle-adolescent students?”, the school environment can contribute to resilience through facilitating safety and good education. Resilient and Not-Resilient middle-adolescents differ in their dependence on the school environment for their access to these resilience-enhancing circumstances and factors. In relation to the first sub question, “What are resilient middle-adolescents’ perceptions of the contribution of the school environment to their resilience?”, the school environment contributes to the resilience of resilient middle-adolescents by challenging them (e.g with high expectations) and by offering opportunities to create constructive relationships with adults and fellow students in the school environment (e.g through informal conversations and through keeping order in the classroom). In answer to the second and third sub questions, “What are the perceptions of not-resilient middle-adolescents of the contribution of the school environment to their state of resilience?” and “How can the comparison between these two perceptions be explained?”, Not-Resilient middle-adolescents identify and utilise the services and potentially protective factors in the school enviroment less of their own accord than Resilient middle-adolescents do. The school environment can contribute to the resilience of Not-Resilient middle-adolescents by facilitating an overview, insight and positive future expectations in a very direct, controlling manner: An overview over risks for one’s own development and the presence of potential resources to assist one’s own development; insight into his or her own abilities to deal with possible risks; and positive future expectations on the improvement of a situation after a problem or risk has occurred. In summary, the daily situations in the school environment offer enough tools to contribute to the resilience of resilient and not-resilient middle-adolescents. These should, however, be recognised by both the middle-adolescent and the adults in the school environment as opportunities for development, which should subsequently be grasped in order to learn to deal with these challenges constructively. / Thesis (PhD (Learning Supoort, Guidance and Counselling))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Educational Psychology / PhD / unrestricted

Mental Health Problems in Parole Decisions: The Re-conceptualization of Mental Health Problems as Risk Factors

Stewart, Shannon Marie January 2016 (has links)
Deinstitutionalization has had an impact increasing the number of offenders with mental health problems within the correctional system. Furthermore, preliminary research claims that offenders with mental health problems are disproportionately denied when applying for parole. The reasons for this are not well understood. This exploratory qualitative research draws on 48 decisions from the Parole Board of Canada decision registry, four interviews with former parole board members, and observation data from 17 parole hearings to explore how mental health problems are constructed within the conditional release decision-making process. Against a risk logic back drop, this institutional ethnography analyzes the way parole board members understand and operationalize mental health within the decision-making process. Self-regulation, medication compliance, and the role of the expert were strong themes that emerged through a content analysis. By integrating symbolic interactionism and a governmentality framework, the current study explores how mental health in parole decision-making is influenced by individual, organizational, and macro-level risk rationalities that draw on neoliberal responsibilization strategies and "psy" expertise. The findings are presented within Hawkin’s (2002) legal decision-making framework. Policy and human rights implications are discussed.

Beneath the arches : re-appropriating the spaces of infrastructure in Manchester

Rosa, Brian January 2014 (has links)
This thesis sets out to explore the implications that transport infrastructures have on the production and perception of the urban built environment. Particularly, it focuses on the Victorian brick viaducts constructed to support the elevated railway in Manchester, England. It concentrates on Manchester’s post-industrial restructuring and re-imaging since the late 1960s, exploring how the presence of brick railway viaducts, as well as the uses beneath their arches, have impacted strategies for revalorisation in the wake of gradual deindustrialisation. In exploring the changing symbolic economy of landscapes dominated by railway infrastructure, as well as the shifting uses and images of railway arches, this thesis explores the interplay between political economy and the aesthetic and symbolic dimensions of urban regeneration. Upon establishing the mutually constituted history of Manchester’s elevated railways and its city centre and demonstrating how this 19th century process has shaped the form and character of the city, it excavates a cultural history of the infrastructural landscapes of the city. Special emphasis is placed on the uses and perceptions of railway arches, which have long served as symbols of dereliction and social disorder. These spatial and cultural histories act as a foundation for analysing how the city’s railway viaducts have been implicated in the re-imagining of Manchester as a post-industrial city. These histories and representations are explored in relation to property-led strategies of environmental improvement, industrial displacement, and heritage tourism along the southern fringe of Manchester city centre, focusing on three thematic and spatially bound case studies. These case studies rely on documentary data of planning and design strategies, interviews with elite actors involved in the re-imaging of Manchester city centre, and ethnographic observation. Using critical discourse analysis, the thesis unpacks the narrative relationship between dominant representations of these spaces and professional justifications for their material and symbolic reconfiguration.

La perversion féminine : la femme existe? / The feminine perversion : the woman exists?

Derouiche, Kaouther 25 November 2013 (has links)
This work concerns on one hand the interrogation on the existence of the even non-existent feminine, extremely rare perversion according to the fundamental papers of the psychoanalysis, and somewhere else on the exploration of the dynamics appropriate(peculiar) to the perverse assembly(editing) in the feminine. If the woman who is situated near(on the side of) love brought Lacan expressed the famous maxim, that of the woman do not exist, because she " is not quite " and because the woman spells only blocked, the perverse woman will turn out to be to the woman(wife). Therefore, the perverse woman advocates the existence of the woman and her possible writing. The perverse assembly(editing) of the perverse woman scoffs at the law of the difference of the sexes by ending in an exaggerated forgery of the formulae of her(it) So, it is about a perversion feminine as imposture. Indeed, the perverse imposture of the perverse woman spreads (displays, deploys) through the artificial identity that the perverse woman makes to counter the other woman, the one who does not exist. Straightaway, imaginary prevalence at the perverse woman is the mechanism which allows the pervert to have the faith in the ownership of a phallus, on one hand widely upper to that of the man, because he (it) is not limited by the détumescence and on the other hand, raising(finding) it to the rank of the exception, because she is the only woman to hold(detain) him(it). The perverse direction (fabrication), the anchoring of which is imaginary, operates in nets meaning of symbolism. Indeed, symbolism, scene (stage) of the law of the difference of the sexes, is scoffed and soiled. So, it is So, it is this other knowledge, kind of " to know ", lauded by the perverse woman who divides the other one, - the bewildered witness(baton), and continues its illusion, its faith, in the credit note of the phallus. However, behind this armor of invincible shows itself an anxiety in the melancholic tint, connected to the insignificance of the female genital organ. So, it is this dismissal of the charges of the woman in which the perverse woman by imposture and enactment invents a place, which establishes (constitutes) the anxiety of which the perverse woman protects himself.

Abstract: The research supported by FAPESP, is in search of new paradigms in the current continuing education of educators, seeking to expand the discussion around the mutual contributions of the areas of art and education. Conducted an investigation relating these areas, focusing on the use of the theatrical experience for the construction of pedagogical knowledge, creating links between artistic creation and creativity in educational practice. The objective, to its development, was to investigate creative possibilities of rapprochement between educational theory and practice, based on the proposition of the French educator Celestin Freinet: "If you do not return to the way of a child, you won't enter the Kingdom of Good Teaching." It's structure was based on field research conducted in AMIC - Friends of Children / Center Spiritist Faith and Love, and its methodological procedures identified with those of the Research Participant, or Creation Research and was split into three distinct fronts: experimental practice through theatrical workshops held with a group of educators, monitoring the daily of educators in the classroom and interviews. The main theoretical references (besides Freinet) were: Janusz Korczak, Augusto Boal, Constantin Stanislavski and Viola Spolin. The themes that were developed: the empathy of the teacher on the student, the oppression that the teatcher has on this, the symbolic game as a possibility for communication between the adult and child world, the search for the child inside the educator through his memories and tricks of childhood, the trust built up by the body expression, allowing the creativity, spontaneity, self overrun, the recovery of their identity in a process that culminated in an assembly stage and public presentations of a theatrical piece.

The purpose of this research is to understand the hierarchical boundaries formed in social fractions selected of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. Considering the information from the interviews with individuals of different profiles, we found symbolic hierarchies and distinctive markers in the local high society. In order to do not reduce the empirical object analyzed in terms of social classes, people interviewed were grouped into three groups, named here emerging, traditional and anonymous, as their similarities and peculiarities. Questioning the very applicability of the concept of social class in this review, the analysis of the interviews showed aspects disregarded in some classist approaches: the valuation of ancestry and visibility in local media (social column). In this sense, the research explores such hierarchical differences among members of those three groups, and shows the struggles around distinction, in which it is disputed the domain of symbolic capital and distinctive markers.

When it comes to a phenomenon that modifies the body, it is noted that obesity highlights the premise that the subject responds with the body to the pains and frustrations of the lived, however, without neglecting the context of the current consumer society, excesses, in a frenetic daily life that well characterizes fast food chains. For psychoanalysis, the body is pulsional and subject to language. For Ferenczi, the body is the depositary of a sensory inscription when the absence of a psychic inscription. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between obesity and non-symbolized traumatic situations. Therefore, we take the phenomenon of obesity as a symptom, in which the excess of meat can be the demonstration of what was directed to the body for lack of a psychic elaboration. We use narrative as a means of accessing life history and obesity. Five subjects of both sexes, between 25 and 50 years old, participated in the study. The narratives collected in an interview were analyzed in light of the psychoanalytic framework and the conception of trauma for Freud and Ferenczi. From this, a relationship between obesity and trauma became evident, since in the reports presented there were always suffering-generating experiences in which it was not possible to make sense. In addition, it has been demonstrated that betting on the word, giving voice to the subject, is a possible way for the treatment of obesity as a symptom that refers to unconscious processes.

Tracunhaém : a tradição e memórias no moldar do barro

Camargo, Juliano Leal January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation's objective is to analyze the relations between memory and identity starting from the study of a community of artisans, inhabitants of the city of Tracunhaém, Wood Zone of the Pernambuco state - Brazil. In this manner, it is possible to approximate an empirical analysis about local craftsmanship to a theoretical referential capable of supporting the perception of the molding of clay, of Tracunhaém's urban identity, and its masters/artisans, those being prominent in this research: they are producers of symbolic goods, points of reference in the thinking of urban identity of Tracunhaém as a city also inserted in an artisan memory of sorts, serving to the establishment of a tradition. Simultaneously to the dissertation, a product in the form of an e-book was elaborated, as a means of collaborating with the visibility of the artisanal production in Tracunhaém.

The Race Issue - Researching Diversity and Representation of Race in Contemporary Fashion Editorials

Lehwald, Lise Charlotte January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to examine the diversity and representation of models of color in ELLE US’ 2017 fashion editorials. As the purpose is twofold, so is the methodological approach, which looks at the material through both a quantitative content analysis and a qualitative visual analysis. Theoretically, the analyses are grounded in postcolonialism, representation and the concept of new racism. To discuss medias’ influence on audiences, the theory also presents related research on this subject. Illustrating a statistical lack of diversity, as well as tendencies of stereotypical representations, the research indicates a postcolonial discourse in ELLE’s content – results that are problematic both in relation to racial equality and to the socially constructed beauty-ideals that ELLE takes part in creating.

VANLIGA MÄNNISKOR, MISSBRUKARE, FÖRBRYTARE OCH REKREATIONSANVÄNDARE EN MIXED-METHODS STUDIE AV PERSONER SOM DÖMTS FÖR NARKOTIKAKÖP PÅ INTERNET

Tiberg, Fredrik January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the characteristics of persons who are sentenced for purchasing illicit drugs on the internet, and how the legal system describes the social situation and motives of the convicted persons. The thesis uses a mixed-method methodology with both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The empirical material consists of documents in the form of judgments and preliminary investigation protocols. The quantitative analysis has examined the demography, previous criminal records and the sanctions of 222 convicted persons. The qualitative analysis has examined how the social situation and motives of the convicted persons are described by the judicial system. Pierre Bourdieu's theory of capital forms constitutes the theoretical starting point of the essay. Drug markets can be regarded as fields which, to varying degrees, require symbolic capital. The characteristic of the drug markets on the internet is that they do not require symbolic capital. The result of both the quantitative and qualitative analysis is that the convicted buyers are described as a heterogeneous group in the documents of the legal system. The convicted are a diverse group regarding age, geography and choice substances. Some of the convicted are described as ordinary people with organized social conditions. Others convicted are described as having major problems with mental illness, drug abuse and crime. The descriptions of the motives for purchasing drugs on the internet are to access substances of a certain quality, quantity, price or type. But also, to access a different kind of relationship between the buyer and the seller of drugs.
