“Between the Spheres: Male Characters and the Performance of Femininity in Four Victorian Novels, 1849-1886” définit le célibataire domestique, analyse les effets de l’érosion des frontières entre les domaines public et privé et retrace l’évolution du discours public au sujet de la masculinité dans quatre œuvres: Shirley écrit par Charlotte Brontë, Lady Audley’s Secret de Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Daniel Deronda par George Eliot, et The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde de Robert Louis Stevenson. En identifiant le célibataire domestique comme personnage récurrent à la dernière moitié du dixneuvième siècle, cette dissertation démontre comment ce personnage arrive à représenter l’incertitude face aux questions de sexualité, non seulement dans des rôles féminins mais aussi dans les positions de l’homme dans la société et la remise en question du concept de la masculinité. Tout comme il y eu de femmes à l’affût de la liberté au-delà du domaine privé, des hommes aussi cherchèrent leur liberté au sein du domaine domestique par des performances féminines. Le célibataire domestique rapporte sur le concept New Woman de cette période par sa tendance de promouvoir de nouvelles définitions de la masculinité victorienne et les limites entre sexes. Le célibataire domestique passe du domaine public, plutôt masculin, vers le domaine privé, plutôt féminin en participitant dans le discours féminin, tel que les sujets de le domesticité, la chastité, la moralité, le mariage, et l’amour.
En s’inspirant de l’analyse des domaines public et privé par Jürgen Habermas, cette dissertation revoit les rôles de ces domaines et leur élasticité dans les quatre œuvres en question ainsi que le sort des célibataires domestiques. L’assignation de sexe à ces domaines mena à la recherche de nouveaux formes de masculinité, produisant une définition de mâle liée au statut de la femme dans le domaine privé. Le célibataire domestique se déplace facilement entre ces domaines sans souffrir d’accusations de tendances effeminées ou d’aliénation sociale, à l’encontre des conséquences qu’ont souffert les personnages femelles pour leur comportement inhabituel. Chaque chapitre de cette dissertation considère les changements dans le discours de la sexualité afin de suivre la migration du célibataire domestique du domaine féminin au milieu du dixneuvième siècle jusqu’un nouveau domaine à la fin de siècle qui estompe la distinction rigide crue être en place tout au long de la période victorienne. / “Between the Spheres: Male Characters and the Performance of Femininity in Four Victorian Novels, 1849-1886” defines the domesticated bachelor, examines the effects of the blurring of the boundaries between the public and private spheres, and traces the evolution of the public discourse on masculinity in Charlotte Brontë’s Shirley, Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret, George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. By identifying the domestic man as a recurrent figure in the second half of the nineteenth century, this dissertation proves how he comes to represent the uncertainty surrounding issues of gender, not only concerning women’s roles, but also men’s positions in society and the re-defining of masculinity. Just as there were women seeking freedom by moving beyond the domestic sphere, there were men seeking a similar liberty by moving from the public into the private sphere by performing femininity. This bachelor is equally significant to the New Woman of this period based on his tendency to open up for discussion new definitions of Victorian masculinity and gender boundaries. The domesticated man moves from the “masculinized” public sphere into the “feminized” private sphere, by engaging in feminine discourse including issues of domesticity, chastity, morality, marriage, and love.
Drawing upon Jürgen Habermas’s analysis of public and private spheres, this dissertation re-examines the roles of the spheres, their fluidity in the four works under consideration, and the fate of the domesticated male characters. The gendering of the spheres resulted in the search for new forms of masculinity; this new definition of maleness was extremely dependent on the status of women in the private sphere. The bachelor moves between the spheres without necessarily suffering consequences such as effeminacy and social estrangement, as opposed to “masculine” female characters that did suffer from social stigma resulting from their uncharacteristic behavior. Each chapter considers changes in the discourse of sexuality to account for a re-positioning of the domesticated man from a feminine sphere of activity into a new sphere which, by the end of the century, blurs the rigid distinction thought to be in place throughout the Victorian period.

Previous issue date: 2007-06-13 / This work portrays the professional formation of a police officer in the State of Amazonas. It refers to the first group of professionals that graduated in Bachelor of Public Security and of the Citizen, a specific course for military servants that started in 2002 and finished in 2005. The academic approach used in this course had the purpose of fitting it in National Curriculum Mould (NCM) to teaching police officer based on Curriculum Basis of the Training of Professionals in the Area of Security of the Citizens, introduced by Ministery of Justice through National Secretary of Public Safety, in 2000. National Curriculum Mould integrates a set of actions from the Federal Government to improve teaching/learning into the police area attempting to have a better qualifier police stuff in a democratic society. The empirical content of the teaching process reveals the importance of high education to the military corporation members from the State of Amazonas, well as to the University of the State of Amazonas, according to its commitment, which is minimizing public conflicts. / Este trabalho de pesquisa trata da formação profissional do oficial policial militar no Estado do Amazonas. Trata-se da 1ª turma do Curso de Bacharelado em Segurança Pública e do Cidadão Curso de Formação de Oficiais (CFO), iniciado em agosto de 2002 e concluído em março de 2005. A abordagem acadêmica foi adotada no sentido de se verificar a adaptação do Curso à Matriz Curricular Nacional (MCN) para o ensino policial, versada nas Bases Curriculares para a Formação dos Profissionais da Área de Segurança do Cidadão, apresentada pelo Ministério da Justiça, através da Secretaria Nacional de Segurança Pública (SENASP) em 2000. A Matriz Curricular Nacional integra um conjunto de ações do Governo Federal para balizar o ensino policial, buscando assim, capacitar os oficiais para atuar de maneira adequada em uma sociedade democrática. O conteúdo empírico do trabalho revela o dimensionamento da formação do oficial policial militar consubstanciado pelo ensino, pesquisa e extensão, realizado em parceria entre a Polícia Militar do Estado do Amazonas e a Universidade do Estado do Amazonas, no cenário em que desempenhará suas funções para dirimir os conflitos da ordem pública.

Previous issue date: 2015-06-29 / A presente dissertação, fruto da pesquisa realizada no Mestrado Profissional em Gestão e Avaliação da Educação Pública do CAED/UFJF, apresenta como temática a retenção e a evasão escolares no ensino superior, especificamente entre alunos do Bacharelado Interdisciplinar em Ciências Exatas da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). O termo evasão, para esta pesquisa, é considerado como sendo o desligamento do acadêmico de seu curso, tanto para fora da UFJF – abandono, cancelamento de matrícula, jubilamento, transferência –, quanto para outro curso da instituição – transferência interna ou novo ingresso por processo seletivo. Já em relação à retenção, este estudo a associa às reprovações sofridas pelo acadêmico ao longo de seu curso, ao qual se mantém vinculado, o que implica a ultrapassagem do tempo previsto para a integralização curricular da graduação pelo estudante. A partir da estrutura de pré-requisitos do referido curso, têm sido verificados casos frequentes de baixo rendimento acadêmico, especialmente nas disciplinas iniciais. A retenção nessas disciplinas tem dificultado a evolução do acadêmico dentro do curso, sendo possível, assim, levantar a hipótese de que o fato de o estudante não apresentar essa evolução contribua para os casos de evasão, bem como possibilite a investigação de fatores que tenham favorecido essa situação educacional preocupante. Assim, a realização deste estudo justifica-se por constatar-se que, tanto em nível local quanto nacional, as instituições de ensino superior vêm, ao longo dos anos, enfrentando problemas consideráveis relacionados à evasão e/ou repetência entre seus acadêmicos. Diante desse cenário, esta dissertação buscou analisar a retenção e evasão entre alunos do primeiro ciclo do Bacharelado Interdisciplinar em Ciências Exatas da UFJF, considerando pesquisa documental e referencial teórico sobre o tema, além de realizar entrevistas a professores e gestores da instituição. Por fim, foram propostas duas ações de intervenção – criação de uma atividade de apoio pedagógico e um programa de monitoramento do desempenho acadêmico –, visando à melhoria do desempenho dos alunos, e, como uma possível consequência, permitir que os acadêmicos concluam com êxito e no tempo adequado o seu curso, reduzindo os casos de reprovação e abandono escolar. / This dissertation, result of a research held in Professional Masters in Management and Evaluation of Public Education of CAED/UFJF, presents as its theme the retention and school dropout in higher education, specifically among students of Interdisciplinary Bachelor in Exact Sciences of Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF). The term evasion, for this research is considered to be the shutdown of his academic course, both out of UFJF - abandonment, enrollment cancellation, dismissal, transfer - and for another course of the institution - internal transfer or a new entrance selective process. Regarding retention, this study associates the failures suffered by the academic along his course, which he remains tied, that implies the expected time is exceeded complete curricular graduation by the student. From the above mentioned course prerequisites structure, frequent cases of low academic performance have been checked, especially in the early disciplines. Retention in these disciplines has hindered the development of academic within the courseand it is possible thus raise the hypothesis that the fact that the student does not present such developments contribute to the cases of evasion, and allows the investigation of factors that have favored this worrying educational situation. Thus, this study is justified by noting that both the local and national level, higher education institutions have, over the years, facing considerable problems related to evasion and/or repetition among their academics. Considering this scenario, this thesis seeks to analyze retention and dropout among students of the first cycle of the Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Exact Sciences of UFJF considering documentary research and theoretical framework on the subject, in addition to conducting interviews with teachers and managers of the institution. Finally, two intervention actions were proposed - creation of a pedagogical support activity and a monitoring of academic performance program - aiming the improvement of student performance, and as a possible consequence, allow academics to successfully complete their course and in the appropriate time, reducing cases of failure and dropout.

Previous issue date: 2015-05-29 / FAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / O presente estudo busca analisar as mudanças advindas da implantação do Programa do Governo Federal de Apoio a Planos de Reestruturação e Expansão das Universidades Federais Brasileiras – REUNI (a partir de 2008) no sistema de educação superior público federal, especificamente no corpo docente do Bacharelado Interdisciplinar em Ciências Exatas da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. As mudanças mais relevantes a nível macro, dizem respeito às principais políticas públicas acerca da expansão universitária implementadas a partir de meados da década de 2000; a contratação de docentes, as reformas de infraestrutura; as políticas afirmativas, a ampliação das vagas. Estas políticas públicas, além de modificarem a estruturação de vários cursos, foram responsáveis pelo aumento do número de contratação de professores universitários, o que consequentemente acarretou uma modificação substancial do perfil deste profissional, bem como uma mudança nas relações de poder da universidade. Para tanto, metodologicamente, optamos por observar quais os traços profissionais e acadêmicos mais marcantes destes professores, suas interações com o ambiente de trabalho, e como estes são afetados pelas mudanças curriculares e de produtividade, além disso, buscamos analisar suas expectativas e os estímulos por eles recebidos no contexto institucional. Analisamos as práticas destes profissionais em relação à tríplice função da educação superior: pesquisa, ensino e extensão e também sua atuação nas atividades burocrático-administrativas da instituição. Dessa forma foram verificados seus currículos lattes, aplicados questionários e também realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas com os docentes. Consideramos que a análise destes elementos é primordial para compreendermos os limites e alcances das políticas públicas adotadas no interior do sistema de educação superior pública no país. Essa análise tornou possível o mapeamento dos êxitos e dos percalços que o REUNI, do ponto de vista do docente, dentro do Bacharelado Interdisciplinar em Ciências Exatas da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, durante a sua implementação. / This study seeks to analyze the changes arising from the implementation of REUNI in recent years within the federal public higher education system, specifically on the faculty of the Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Exact Sciences, Federal University of Juiz de Fora. The most significant changes at the macro level, relate to principal public policies on university expansion implemented since the mid-2000s: hiring teachers, the infrastructure reforms; affirmative policies, increase in enrollment. These public policies, in addition to modify the structure of various courses, were responsible for the increase in hiring professors, which in turn led to a substantial modification of the profile of this professional as well as a change in the university's power relations. Therefore, methodologically, we chose to observe what the main professional and academic characteristics of these teachers, their interactions with the work environment, and how these are affected by curricular and productivity changes, in addition, we analyze their expectations and stimuli they received in the institutional context We have analyzed the practices of these professionals regarding the threefold function of higher education: research, teaching and extension as well as his performance in bureaucraticadministrative activities of the institution. Thus were verified their curriculum lattes , Questionnaires were applied and also conducted semi-structured interviews with teachers. We believe that the analysis of these elements is essential to understand the limits and range of public policies adopted within the public higher education system in the country. This analysis made it possible to map the successes and setbacks of REUNI in the Bachelor in Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences, Federal University of Juiz de Fora during its implementation.

As databases and traffic over the internet is becoming larger by the day, the performance of sending information has become a target of great importance. In past years, other software architectural styles such as REST have been used as it is a reliable framework and works really well when one has a dependable internet connection. In 2015, the querying language GraphQL was released by Facebook to the public as an alternative to REST. GraphQL made improvements in fetching data by for example removing the possibility of under- and overfitting. This means that a client only gets the data which they have requested, nothing more, nothing less. To create a GraphQL schema and server implementation requires time, effort and knowledge. This is however a requirement to run GraphQL over your current legacy database. For this reason multiple server implementation tools have been created by vendors to reduce development time and instead auto-generates a GraphQL schema and server implementation using an already existing database. This bachelor thesis will pick, run and compare the benchmarks of the two different server implementation tools Hasura and PostGraphile. This is done using a benchmark methodology based on technical difficulties (choke points). The result of our benchmark suggests that the throughput is larger for Hasura compared to PostGraphile whilst the query execution time as well as query response time is similar. PostGraphile is better at paging without offset as well as ordering, but on all other cases Hasura outperforms PostGraphile or shows similar results. / Linköping GraphQL Benchmark (LinGBM)
