Eco-Friendliness As A University Choice Factor : A Study Of Swedish Students’ Attraction Towards Linköping University

Jafaei, Hesam, Lespinasse, Manon January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between eco-friendliness as part of University Social Responsibility (USR) and the impact it has on students and their attraction towards a university. Previous research have so far not investigated on such a connection due to a general focus on the private sector, companies and therefore Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). However, the literature is full of workable information, theories and conclusions through the acceptance of a specific model considering students as customers. It makes the assumptions being made within the private sector applicable to the public sector of the higher education. The latter is a driving force for any country’s economy by training and shaping a large number of future professionals and citizens. Yet, so far, barely any association has been made with another growing consideration of our developed economies: eco-friendliness and the protection of the environment. The present quantitative study seeks to find the existence of a positive impact of the implementation of eco-friendly measures by Linköping University on Swedish students, notably in terms of attractiveness. Our findings demonstrate that most of LiU Swedish students are attracted towards an eco-friendly university, around 44% of them consider eco-friendliness as a university choice factor and the performance of Linköping University (LiU) in this domain is largely appreciated. Therefore, LiU benefits from a positive public image through its eco-friendly profile. It thus enables and favors attractiveness among Swedish students, even if the latter is seen as improvable, notably through its advertisement since it is thought to be a possible competitive advantage.

Simulation of a Current Controller with Dead-Time Compensation

Heide, Johanna, Granström, Mattias January 2021 (has links)
This master's thesis is divided into two parts. The first part concerns the development of a simulation model of a current controller and a physical drive unit, both implemented in Simulink with the use of legacy code and regulated with field oriented control. The second part concerns the development of a dead-time compensation algorithm. The dead-time is a small delay added to the pulse width modulation signal to diminish the risk of a short circuit in the power electronics. The dead-time causes a voltage distortion, resulting in distorted phase currents, a lower bandwidth and ultimately a decreased machine accuracy. The new simulation environment was able to simulate a real life scenario with promising results. Hence, it could be used to evaluate the dead-time compensation algorithms. Three different dead-time compensation algorithms were implemented and they all showed an increased smoothness of the phase currents as well as an increased controller bandwidth. Both these features are desirable outcomes and all three algorithms show potential to improve accuracy when implemented in a real system.

Gaze Interaction in Modern Trucks

Fjellström, Jonatan January 2014 (has links)
In this master thesis project carried out on Scania’s interaction design department in Södertälje an evaluation of the technology gaze interaction has been done. The aim was to see if the technology was suitable for implementation in a truck environment and what potential it had. The work started by doing a context analysis to get a deeper knowledge of the research done on within the area related to the subject. Following the context analysis a comprehensive need finding process was done. In this process, data from interviews, observations, ride along with truck drivers, benchmarking and more was analysed. The analysis of this was used to identify the user needs. Based on the user needs the concept development phase was conducted. The whole development phase was done in different stages and started off by an idea generation process. The work flow was made in small iterations with the idea to continuously improve the concepts. All concepts were evaluated in a concept scoring chart to see which of the concepts that best fulfilled the concept specifications. The concepts that best could highlight the techniques strengths and weaknesses were chosen and these are Head Up Display Interaction and Gaze Support System.. These concepts focused on the interaction part of the technique rather than a specific function. Test of the two concepts were conducted in a simulator to get data and see how they performed compared to today´s Scania trucks. The result overall was good and the test subjects were impressed with the systems. However there was no significance in most of the cases of driving except for some conditions where the concepts prove to be better than the systems used today. Gaze interaction is a technology that is suitable for a truck driving environment given that a few slight improvements are made. Implementation of the concepts have a good potential of reducing road accidents caused by human errors.

Hyperspectral Image Analysis Algorithm for Characterizing Human Tissue

Wondim, Yonas kassaw January 2011 (has links)
AbstractIn the field of Biomedical Optics measurement of tissue optical properties, like absorption, scattering, and reduced scattering coefficient, has gained importance for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Accuracy in determining the optical properties is of vital importance to quantitatively determine chromophores in tissue. There are different techniques used to quantify tissue chromophores. Reflectance spectroscopy is one of the most common methods to rapidly and accurately characterize the blood amount and oxygen saturation in the microcirculation. With a hyper spectral imaging (HSI) device it is possible to capture images with spectral information that depends both on tissue absorption and scattering. To analyze this data software that accounts for both absorption and scattering event needs to be developed. In this thesis work an HSI algorithm, capable of assessing tissue oxygenation while accounting for both tissue absorption and scattering, is developed. The complete imaging system comprises: a light source, a liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF), a camera lens, a CCD camera, control units and power supply for light source and filter, and a computer. This work also presents a Graphic processing Unit (GPU) implementation of the developed HSI algorithm, which is found computationally demanding. It is found that the GPU implementation outperforms the Matlab “lsqnonneg” function by the order of 5-7X.At the end, the HSI system and the developed algorithm is evaluated in two experiments. In the first experiment the concentration of chromophores is assessed while occluding the finger tip. In the second experiment the skin is provoked by UV light while checking for Erythema development by analyzing the oxyhemoglobin image at different point of time. In this experiment the melanin concentration change is also checked at different point of time from exposure. It is found that the result matches the theory in the time dependent change of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin. However, the result of melanin does not correspond to the theoretically expected result.

<p>With this essay we have had the intention of observing Linköping University as an example of a public authority undergoing change. In the information society of today, the increasing competition and internationalization affects, not only companies and organizations, but also the public sector. After having been concerned with neutral information spread only, according to"the third mandate", employees at the Department of Information at Linköping University has also started dealing with marketing, so as to increase the recruitment of students. As a result of this, the work team has been divided into an editorial staff and a department with emphasis on market issues. To strengthen the trademark of Linköping University one has chosen to mediate certain values representative for the university - an interdisciplinary and innovative approach and an entrepreneurial spirit. The technical developments of today have also influenced information related activities at the university, due to increasing usage of the Internet. Our essay deals with the complex of problems which can arise when a traditonal organization faces increased competition and new technical conditions.</p> / <p>Med denna uppsats har vi haft för avsikt att uppmärksamma Linköpings universitet som ett exempel på en samhällsinstitution i förändring. An explorative study of the technology transfer coach as a preliminary for the design of a computer aid

Jönsson, Oscar January 2014 (has links)
The university technology transfer coach has an important role in supporting the commercialization of research results. This thesis has studied the technology transfer coach and their needs in the coaching process. The goal has been to investigate information needs of the technology transfer coach as a preliminary for the design of computer aids.Using a grounded theory approach, we interviewed 17 coaches working in the Swedish technology transfer environment. Extracted quotes from interviews were openly coded and categorized. The analysis show three main problem areas related to the information needs of the technology transfer coach; awareness, communication, and resources. Moreover, 20 features for future computer aids were extracted from the interview data and scenarios and personas where developed to exemplify the future use of computer aids.We conclude that there is a need for computer support in the coaching process. Such systems should aid the coach in; awareness, aiding the coach to focus on meetings; communication, aid the coach to transfer commercialisation knowledge; and resources, aid the coach in accessing and delivering of resources to the coachee. However, it is imperative that the computer aids do not interfere with the coach current process; and that the computer aid is not seen as the sole solution.

Improving methane production using hydrodynamic cavitation as pre-treatment / Förbättrad methanproduktion med hydrodynamisk kavitation som förbehandling

Abrahamsson, Louise January 2016 (has links)
To develop anaerobic digestion (AD), innovative solutions to increase methane yields in existing AD processes are needed. In particular, the adoption of low energy pre-treatments to enhance biomass biodegradability is needed to provide efficient digestion processes increasing profitability. To obtain these features, hydrodynamic cavitation has been evaluated as an innovative solutions for AD of waste activated sludge (WAS), food waste (FW), macro algae and grass, in comparison with steam explosion (high energy pre-treatment). The effect of these two pre-treatments on the substrates, e.g. particle size distribution, soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD), biochemical methane potential (BMP) and biodegradability rate, have been evaluated. After two minutes of hydrodynamic cavitation (8 bar), the mean fine particle size decreased from 489- 1344 nm to 277- 381 nm (≤77% reduction) depending of the biomasses. Similar impacts were observed after ten minutes of steam explosion (210 °C, 30 bar) with a reduction in particle size between 40% and 70% for all the substrates treated.  In terms of BMP value, hydrodynamic cavitation caused significant increment only within the A. nodosum showing a post treatment increment of 44% compared to the untreated value, while similar values were obtained before and after treatment within the other tested substrates. In contrast, steam explosion allowed an increment for all treated samples, A. nodosum (+86%), grass (14%) and S. latissima (4%). However, greater impacts where observed with hydrodynamic cavitation than steam explosion when comparing the kinetic constant K. Overall, hydrodynamic cavitation appeared an efficient pre-treatment for AD capable to compete with the traditional steam explosion in terms om kinetics and providing a more efficient energy balance (+14%) as well as methane yield for A. nodosum.
