A Dual Dilemma: An Examination of Body Dissatisfaction Among Asian American Females in Emerging Adulthood

Javier, Sarah 01 May 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine what factors contribute to and result from body dissatisfaction using the theoretical framework of the Tripartite Model of Influence, which included family, peer, and media influence. Participants were recruited from SONA and student organizations and participated in an online survey (N =148). A MANCOVA indicated that Asian and White females did not differ in body dissatisfaction and other health outcomes. Thin-ideal internalization mediated the relationships between media influence, peer influence, and body dissatisfaction among Asian American females. Moderation analyses indicated that ethnic identity, Asian American identity, and acculturation did not moderate the relationship between the three tripartite influences and body dissatisfaction. Finally, a series of multiple regressions indicated that body dissatisfaction significantly predicted disordered eating, cosmetic surgery endorsement, and cigarette use among Asian Americans. Findings suggest that Asian American body dissatisfaction may be more related to Western influence than current literature shows.

The Sociocultural Model of Eating Disorders in New Zealand Women: Family Food-Related Experiences and Self-Compassion as Moderators.

Shephard, Sonia Lee January 2012 (has links)
Eating disorders are debilitating psychiatric conditions which often result in severe impairment in many life domains. The sociocultural model specifies mechanisms through which sociocultural pressure leads to eating pathology among young women (Stice, 1994) and posits that exposure to the Western cultural thin ideal, internalization of the ideal and experience of a difference between self and ideal leads to body dissatisfaction, which is a well validated precursor to eating pathology. The current research examined whether the relationships between awareness of Western appearance ideals, internalization of such ideals, and body dissatisfaction were moderated by family food-related experiences and self-compassion. The current paper also investigated whether the strength of relationships between awareness of Western appearance ideals, internalization of such ideals, and body dissatisfaction are affected by certain types of family food-related experiences. Female university students (N = 106) completed self-report questionnaires. Results indicated that mindfulness, a constituent of self-compassion, moderated the relationship between internalization of cultural thinness standards and body dissatisfaction. In addition, self-compassion, each component of self-compassion and women’s perception of negative maternal family food-related experiences predicted internalization of Western societal norms of thinness, as well as body dissatisfaction. Moreover, women’s perception of negative paternal family food-related experiences predicted body dissatisfaction. Women’s perception of negative maternal commentary predicted internalization of Western beauty standards and body dissatisfaction. Finally, women’s perception of negative paternal commentary and paternal modelling of eating difficulties and body image concerns predicted internalization of those values. Future research should attempt to clarify causal relationships among self-compassion and family food-related experiences within the sociocultural model of eating disorders.

"Så slipper du plufsmagen" : En kritisk diskursanalys om hur kvällstidningen Aftonbladet porträtterar övervikt och viktnedgång / "Så slipper du plufsmagen" : A critical discourse analysis of how the newspaper Aftonbladet portrays overweight and weight loss

Wredberg, Tilda, Forsström, Alicia January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study is with the help of a critical discourse analysis (CDA) to analyze how Swedish news media in 2020 construct overweight and weight loss and how power structures are expressed. The theories that have been used are representation theory, stigmatizing theory and biopolitics. The study uses critical discourse analysis to analyze articles from the newspaper. Analysis tools that were used are lexical choices, formal and informal lexical choices, overlexicalization and structural contradictions. The empirical material of the study consists of quotes taken from articles handling the topics overweight and weight loss in the newspaper Aftonbladet during the year of 2020. A total of 28 different quotes have been analyzed. The results of the study show that Aftonbladet's articles regarding the subject overweight and weight loss in most cases tend to focus on appearance. Overweight is constructed as something that requires correction with the help of discipline, and their articles largely consist of what this correction should look like. The conclusion is that the stigmatization of overweight is still maintained and reproduced by Aftonbladet. Neoliberalism, commercialism, and patriarchal power structures form the basis for how the subject is presented in the newspaper.
