The journeyman musician, the phoenix, and the spiritual musician : experiences of combining music with salaried employment

Chappell, Gwendolyn Joy 04 April 2005 (has links)
A basic interpretative research design (Merriam, 2002) was used to investigate the research question, What is the experience of being involved with music while also employed in a professional occupation? This study contributes to the research on meaning and purpose in life and in work. Three professionals, one man and two women, were interviewed using in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Participants were invited to provide a brief personal history and describe areas of life and work that they found challenging as well as rewarding and / or meaningful. Narratives were developed from the participants interviews. <p>Themes that emerged from the data included the participants experiences of meaning and purpose. All three participants identified their salaried employment as providing meaning in their lives. Their experience of music included a transcendent dimension, a sense of connection to others, a higher self, or to God. Factors that may have encouraged or prohibited the participants achievement in work or music included early learning experiences, exposure to role models and mentoring opportunities, financial concerns, socioeconomic status, social support, psychological traits, and self-efficacy beliefs. <p>This study has relevance for individuals seeking meaning and purpose in their own lives. The narratives exemplified the lives of three individuals with the coping skills, resiliencies, and strengths required to thrive personally and professionally and attain a high level of achievement in more than one area. The narratives may also interest individuals interested in pursuing a career in the arts, music in particular. <p> This study is also relevant for parents, teachers, and career counsellors who want to facilitate the development of potential and encourage high achievement in their children, students, and clients. Career counsellors might benefit from a greater understanding of the aspects of life and work that affect the individuals experiences and ability to pursue a high level of achievement. Early recognition of talent, followed by parental support and discipline as well as professional recognition would be a good start. Encouragement in the form of acknowledgement and financial assistance would continue to develop the individuals ability. However, external resources would not be sufficient without the internal resources, such as responsibility, courage, optimism, hope, perseverance, autonomy, and self-acceptance. Further study could research the application of positive psychology to enhance the development of talent and/or achievement.

On the Possibility of Husserl's Theory of Intersubjectivity: Return from Ideas II to Cartesian Meditations

Tsao, Ming-chi 11 August 2009 (has links)
The main research work in this thesis is to organize the intersubjectivity of Husserl¡¦s theory and to study the two documents of ¡§Ideas II¡¨ and ¡§Cartesian Meditations¡¨ which translate and reorganize the part of intersubjectiveity. The author talks about the ¡§Cartesian Meditations¡¨ first, the late publication, then ¡§Ideas II¡¨ and try to use a reverse method, form transcendental to empiricial, to explore the possibility of intersubjectivity and the trace of the phenomenology in French toward ethics and aesthetics. In addition, author organizes Schutz¡¦s criticism of intersubjectivity of the transcendental theory to contrast with the Husserl¡¦s viewpoint and poses the refutation of Schutz¡¦s criticism in the final part of this thesis. What is the possibility of intersubjectivity? This thesis itself has not been able to provide the concrete opinion. The author poses the "less then contented" as a basis of intersubjectivity, but it only retains in the appendix for the purposes of reference because of its lack of theoretical basis and the persuasiveness.

Conscientization and the Cultivation of Conscience

Liu, Keqi January 2012 (has links)
This philosophical study is set within Paulo Freire’s radical, critical and liberating pedagogical theoretical discourse. If conscientization is defined by Freire as the cultivation of critical consciousness and conscience, it not only provides a stimulus for better understanding of the root causes of human suffering and dehumanization or the loss of humanity but also brings full effect to humanization, an effective approach to address dehumanization problems. While the cultivation of critical consciousness tackles social system and ideological crises, the cultivation of conscience addresses human consciousness problems such as insatiable human desire represented in varying forms of egoism, ambition, lust, greed, and craving for social status. Thereby, as an educational initiative, conscientization can readily and sustainably maintain both self and social empowerment when it is deeply rooted in the praxis of changing the world. The study attempts to achieve three major tasks. The first is to clarify what conscience is and what notion of conscience has internal coherence with the process of conscientization. The second is to determine how to cultivate conscience. The third is to incorporate the cultivation of conscience into conscientization. Like Freire, I draw on a number of different philosophical traditions and perspectives. Where necessary in order to illustrate particular theoretical points, consideration is also given to a number of literary works. The notion of conscience is explored by tracing its historical development. The dialectical relation between consciousness and conscience − in particular, what causes their conflict − is also examined. The investigation of conscience concludes with identifying conscience as a unifying agent in its dialectical relationship with consciousness. The investigation of the dynamism of conscience starts with the confirmation of conscience as the basis of morality. Thereafter, the discussion focuses on why conscience works in a moral sphere, which necessitates a transcendence of blind human biological desire and utilitarian concern for the self. The rationalist tradition of transcendence has undermined, segmented and alienated human life. The transcendent functions of love and dialogue, two ontological ways of human existence, offer an alternative and are justified as the effective mechanisms for cultivating conscience. However, love and dialogue cannot resist armed injustice and inequality. This calls for the integration of the cultivation of conscience into conscientization. In so doing, the interrelatedness and interdependence between the cultivation of critical consciousness and the cultivation of conscience are examined while their distinctive and irreplaceable roles and functions are further specified. In terms of application, the educational and cultural significance of conscientization for the present and the future and possibilities for applying it to concrete educational discourses are explored.

Le cinéma comme expérience du spirituel depuis les années 50 / Cinema as an experience of the spiritual

Fronty, François 18 March 2009 (has links)
Do the spiritual or the experience of the spiritual exist in cinema ? A semantic exploration was necessary to define and distinguish the meanings of sacred, religious and spiritual in the field of cinema. The spiritual appeared as the most effective concept to define our object not as a genre but as an intrisic function of cinema considered as a device. Cinema is based on a specific system of belief, which constitutes an epistemological break in our representation of both reality and transcendence. An anthropological exploration led us to the foundations of the religious fact and cinema, therefore to the essence of our way of apprehending the numinous. We studied the different cultural paradigms through which the spiritual is perceived, conceived and represented in the West, in Asia and in Africa. Through the variety of forms, the narrative form appeared as the anthopological and aestetical invariant of the experience of the spiritual in a! unitive context of description. A study of the mise en scène allowed us to establish links between experiences of characters, actors, and spectators in our perspective. A consideration of the sublime, the extasis as defined by Eisenstein, and the body as evidence of a presence to the world drove us to see cinema as a paradoxical and unitive experience of the spiritual.

Känslan av något större : Hur tolkas händelser som leder till förundran, medkänsla och tacksamhet?

Jacobson, Kristin, Rabne Fredin, Jessika January 2022 (has links)

AN EXPERIENCE BEYOND WORDS : Numinous vs Awe – a shared phenomenon 100 years apart?

Granström Powiecki, Sara January 2023 (has links)
Awe, an emerging topic within the field of modern psychology, has shown to have many benefits, including improved health for mind and body. This essay is trying to explore what links there are between the spiritual concept of the numinous established by the religious scholar Rudolf Otto and the definition of awe put forward by one of the most prominent and influential researchers in the field of Self-Transcendent Emotions, Dacher Keltner. Is the modern concept of awe and the numinous the same thing with similar health benefits? Through a content analysis the study will show that there are many common denominators between the two phenomena in question and that a healthy outcome of spiritual awe is not just possible but common for human beings. Yet that the concept of the numinous still has in some ways its own unique position. Suggestions are made on how further research could be done regarding how to stimulate awe and through that perhaps spirituality, for the benefit of health and the connection with others.

Mindfulness as a Path to Effective Meetings and Leadership Management for Sustainable Transitions within Organizations : An experimental study of  leaders’ and subordinates’ perceptions of mindfulness meetings

Baias, Bianca, Lindgren Cortés, Sofia January 2022 (has links)
Organizations carry an important role in transforming sustainable systems, not least their leaders as they can influence the well-being of employees. Implementing Mindfulness Practices (MPs) within organizations could therefore have a positive influence on several levels throughout the organization for making sustainable change.  As meetings are the playing field for decision-making in organizations, mindfulness is a way to engage people in meetings, to help participants rise to the opportunity of making sustainable decisions. Building on the existing research on organizations and mindfulness, this study aims to provide a descriptive account of the perceptions and experiences of individuals within a team when a short MP is incorporated at the beginning of meetings, resulting in a Mindfulness Meeting (MM). The research took a multi-method qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews and participant observations on two teams from different organizations. Two interviews were conducted, on both leaders and followers, one focusing on general meeting perceptions, and a second focusing on the perceptions of the MMs. The findings of the research indicate that a MP, when conducted in the right format, helps cultivate and strengthen the cognitive processes critical for work environments. In particular the factors perceived as positive for achieving meeting goals were a sense of being present, aware, having clarity of thought, and regulating interactions with others. However, this study is just a starting place for the future of MM within organizations and the work they must do to transition towards sustainable systems.
