Gesture-based interaction for Centralized Traffic Control / Gestbaserad interaktion för centraliserad fjärrstyrning av tågtrafikMilivojevic, Mladen January 2016 (has links)
Ever wondered how trains arrive and depart on time? Traffic Control systems are there to help control the traffic flow, with many operators monitoring and taking actions when necessary. Operators of the traffic control systems use a keyboard and a mouse to interact. Current user interface and work setup consist of many usability issues that can be improved in order to increase operator’s efficiency and productivity in controlling the traffic. Interviewing users of the system and researching on related topics led to a newly proposed design in interaction, user interface as well as some suggestions for increasing productivity. Gesture-based interaction is introduced and simulated for traffic control systems that tend to improve the operation. Various gestures are designed such as panning, zooming and hovering the map using Leap Motion controller which enables intuitive interaction. These gestures aim to solve identified usability issues discovered during the interview with the user. The project aims to answer the following question: Can gesture-based interaction solve usability issues and establish the intuitive use of the CTC system? Performing exploratory research on this topic involved designing, implementing and testing hand gestures with users. From an ergonomic perspective, body posture and hand position of the operator is examined and suggested to use sit-to-stand workstations in order to reduce pain and discomfort while working. Gesture-based interaction eliminates finding mouse cursor on large screens, it enables fast request of detailed information and also it provides a better overview of the map surroundings. Laboratory tests confirm that gesture-based interaction brings more natural and intuitive use of traffic control systems. There is a big potential for gesture-based interaction to increase usability and bring efficient controlling for operators. It would reduce delays of the train and maintain safe traffic flow.

Streamlining Field Operations Through Interface Design : Redesigning Evado Mobile Flow for Enhanced Usability and EfficiencyAndersson, Hanna January 2024 (has links)
In today's digital age, efficient field operations are crucial for success across various industries. However, usability challenges are often overlooked in favour of functionality, hindering seamless task execution in the field. Evado, a company specialising in software solutions for field workers, offers the Evado Mobile Flow application to help streamline their operations. Yet, as demands evolve and complexities increase, usability shortcomings become increasingly apparent. Therefore, this master's thesis aims to optimise field operations by redesigning Evado Mobile Flow to enhance usability and efficiency. Critical usability challenges within the current interface are identified, such as usage difficulties for new users, followed by a comprehensive redesign process using the double diamond design approach. The methodology encompasses discovery, definition, development, and delivery phases, ensuring an effective outcome. The project started with the discovery and define phases, focusing on understanding user needs and interface limitations. Various techniques, including literature review, benchmarking, navigation flowchart, interviews, observations, hierarchical task analysis, and personas, provided valuable insights into the interface and user understanding, which helped to understand the existing problems. Next up was the development and delivery phase, which employed ideation methods such as braindrawing and scampering to generate a broad range of improvements and ideas. These were evaluated through a Pugh matrix and refined through iterative prototyping. The winning design proposal then underwent usability tests, focusing on task completion rates, clicks, user satisfaction, and potential improvements. The initial round of testing on the first prototype prompted a redesign, addressing newly identified usability challenges and introducing new functionalities aligned with evolving user needs. After a redesign, the final design underwent a second usability test and a system usability scale, yielding a usability score of 88.8 and recommendations for future iterations. Recommendations for future work and iterations include exploring the redesigned interface's long-term impacts on field operations and opportunities for further enhancement. This thesis emphasises the importance of user-centred design in developing effective digital solutions and provides a framework for similar endeavours in mobile interface design.

Usability evaluation of an e-learning tutorial using two evaluation methodsNyang'or, Julius Omondi 06 1900 (has links)
The use of interactive e-learning tutorials is an effective form of teaching and learning. It is therefore important that attention is paid to their usability. This research relates to the evaluation of a CD-based e-learning tutorial for learning Business English, with the aims of investigating its usability and identifying problems. Particular attention is paid to aspects that hinder the learner from achieving the learning objectives. The study uses two usability evaluation methods (UEMs), namely controlled usability testing in an HCI laboratory and a user questionnaire survey. The main aim of the study is to compare the findings and determine the impact of using two methods in combination.
The first outcome of the research was a synthesized framework of evaluation criteria that was applied in the two UEMs. Secondly, findings of the evaluations indicated that two UEMs identified similar problems, thus confirming their reliability in usability evaluation. Another finding was instances where one method produced results not obtained by the other, which shows the complementary value of two different UEMs. A third benefit of the study was that it identified usability problems in the target system. / Information Systems / MA (Information Systems)

臺灣華語文教學網站優使性評估之研究-以全球華文網為例 / Usability of teaching Chinese as a second language websites: a case study of E-learning Huayu of Taiwan鄒孟庭, Tsou, Meng Ting Unknown Date (has links)

以使用性工程建構行動個人化數位攝影註釋系統 / Building a Mobile Personal Digital Photograph Annotation System Based on Usability Engineering陳柏諺, Chen, Po Yen Unknown Date (has links)
STO (Spatial and Temporal Based Ontology)的空間架構中加入更具彈性的地理標籤關聯方法GRO (Geotag Related Ontology)。
With the widespread use of photograph recording products, such as digital camera and smartphone, people take photographs easily so that the number of personal photographs increases unceasingly. If photographs are lacking of annotation, searching and retrieving the large number of personal photographs become difficult. However, people are usually reluctant to the cumbersome and exhausted annotation work.
In 2004, Kuo et al. developed PARIS (Personal Archiving and Retrieving Image System) to solve these problems. Based on MPEG-7, PARIS resolved most difficulties of personal digital image semantic annotation and lightened users’ annotation burdens by semi-automatic annotation methods. However, because of the lack of mobile device at that time, PARIS did not develop a modern mobile annotation system to help ordinary people annotate personal photographs.
Therefore, this thesis builds a system with usability engineering as well as designs and develops a modern mobile image annotation system iPARIS (Integrated Personal Archiving and Retrieving Image System). iPARIS expands PARIS architecture to add the support for mobile. It expands PARIS DDDC metadata standard to iDDDC (Integrated Dozen Dimensional Digital Content) which is a crowdsourcing annotation enabled by third party social networking services, and provides STO’s spatial ontology a more flexible geo-information description methodology GRO (Geotag Related Ontology). iPARIS also takes the steps of workflow design, wireframe design, visual design, system implementation, participatory design to build the system; moreover, it keeps improving the user interface and user experience by iterative design. After implementing iPARIS, we conduct usability testing including participatory heuristic evaluation, gesture times, operation time, gesture path, error times, and interview. The test results reach the expected usability goals. Furthermore, the thesis finds some usability problems by analyzing users’ behaviors when they are using the application and brings future improvement for the system.
By integral planning and appropriate interface design, this system lets user take, annotate, organize, and mange personal photos in a mobile application. We hope that iPARIS can meet the usability index to lighten the burdens of personal photograph annotation, arousing users’ desire to annotate personal photographs, and meet the growing needs for the management of personal digital photograph information.

Front-end design and implementation of a Web-based Streaming Platform : A User Centered Approach / Design av användarklient för en webbaserad streaming-plattform : En användarcentrerad approachSalin, Fredrik January 2015 (has links)
This master thesis investigates how an Agile User Centered approach can be used when designing and implementing the frontend for a web-based on-demand video streaming platform. Agile and User Experience (UX) are currently two very popular concepts that are frequently discussed in the software development community. Recently there have been a lot of discussions about how to combine Agile development methodologies and UX activities, and it has proven to be a difficult task in practice. This Master Thesis aims at solving this issue by researching methodologies that take both the Agile aspect as well as UX in consideration. Dual-track Scrum, an Agile/User Centered methodology considering UX, was used as development methodology and throughout the development process it was investigated how this methodology, as well as adding UX activities, affected the UX of the streaming platform. The conclusion from this thesis is that even though the combination of Agile and User Centered processes is difficult, it can be achieved with good results. The thesis presents guidelines for how to successfully combine the two processes as well as what the most important UX activities are and how they can be used in an Agile development project. The thesis also concludes that using a frontend framework, development tools and HTML5 video is very useful for developing the frontend for the streaming platform.
