Lutherans and Pentecostals in mission amongst the Vhavenda: a comparative study in missionary methods

The thesis of this study is that both Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal churches can grow at a time when only the Pentecostal churches have grown. The stagnation that has occurred in many ''mainline" churches.need not be allowed to increase or continue. In Venda (Northern Province) both the Lutherans and the Pentecostals have enjoyed visible growth. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis, the choice of the study area, the objectives of the study, and the typology, methodology and relevance of the study. Chapter 2 looks at the history and socio-economic backgrowtd of the Vhavenda. Chapter 3 describes traditional Vhavenda beliefs and rituals. The Vhavenda world-view is different from that of the West but closer to that of the East and the Bible. Chapter 4 concentrates on missionary Christianity in Venda and briefly discusses the missionary methods adopted by the Berlin Missionary Society. Chapter 5 discusses the coming of Pentecostalism to South Africa and Venda. Chapter 6 examines how the Lutherans and the Apostolic Faith Mission church conducted their mission during the "maturation of Apartheid'' in Venda. Major events in the collision between apartheid and the Vhavenda are highlighted. Chapter 7 discusses the unfinished work of the church in Venda. Women and sexually transmitted diseases: an exploration of indigenous knowledge and health practices among the VhaVenda

Health care service providers in South Africa and elsewhere in the world are increasingly faced with an enormous challenge of modeling their approach to health care to meet the needs and expectations of the diverse societies they serve. The norms and customs that are inherent in these indigenous cultures are fundamental to the day-to-day existence of the people concerned and may hold a key to the understanding of many aspects of their lives, including the understanding of disease, in the case of this thesis, those transmitted sexually. A grounded theory study was used based on its theory of symbolic interactionism to explore the indigenous knowledge and health practices of the Vhavenda in sexually transmitted diseases. Data was collected through in-depth interview with traditional healers and key informants. Snowball sampling was used to idenify key informants as categories continued to emerge. Dara was analyzed using three basic types of coding namely, open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The findings of the study revealed a variety of terms used to identify SDs. Also emerging from the results was that cultural gender roles in the Vhavenda society justify women as sole agents of STDs. In accordance with grounded theory the decriptions of types of diseases, disease patterns, signs and symptoms culminated in "dirt" as the core category. It came out clear that dirt in the form of women'svaginal discharges and moral dirt is the main course of a STDs. It was also evident that strategies for combating STDs will have to take into account popular beliefs and attudes regarding views on STDs as well as the role and influence of traditional healers. Based on the above findings guidelines for designing a module for teaching health professionals has been formulated to aid them in understanding the beliefs and practices of people they serve. / Health Studies / D. Communal pastoral counselling : culturally gifted care-giving in times of family pain - a vhavenda perspective

The thesis argues that there is a need for Christian communal pastoral care and counselling practice beyond the individualistic Western pastoral care and counselling practices. The communal pastoral care model advocated by the author uses culturally gifted care-givers who follow spontaneous caring models. Several of the major books concerning communal pastoral care and counselling were reviewed. The author concludes that the church has been impoverished by ignoring the cultural gifts of the majority of members and the mutual communal care of the community. Pain and its healing in this thesis are understood in a culturally sensitive manner. Pastoral care must be done in context, in this case in the Vhavenda context. Hence the thesis looks systematically at the way in which the Vhavenda understand and heal pain from their cosmological perspective. The thesis engages in empirical research among the Vhavenda people using qualitative interview. The author selected five small communities to test for their understanding of pain and healing. He developed his own interview schedule. Themes encountered in interpreting the research results include pain as part of life. The thesis develops two sub-models of a Vhavenda-Christian culturally gifted model of communal care arguing the need of their incorporation into Christian communal care. They are “Kha ri vangulane” model which pictures pain as a thorn which people help to remove from a person; and the “khoro” or “dzulo” gathering which is family or community care-giving. A case study has illustrated how they are used.Finally, the author argues that the Bible is full of communal pictures which resonate well with the African people. Hence it is fairly easy to correlate the Vhavenda sense of community with the body of Christ model of Christian community as found in the Bible. The conclusion is that members of the Christian community need to reincorporate their culturally gifted care resources and integrate them with the biblical care. / Thesis (D. Th. Moral regeneration in the lives of Vhavenda youth through indigenous knowledge systems : applied ethnography of communication-based approaches with special reference to Tshivhenda

Today, unlike yesterday we talk about Moral Regeneration amongst the Vhavenḓa youth of today and throughout the whole world. Strategies of combating this monster that is snatching our youth are recommended in this study. The problem dealt with in this study is the issue of Moral degeneration amongst the youth which needs to be regenerated. There are many causes of moral degeneration amongst the youth discussed in this study which are accompanied by the remedial strategies. As a way forward in this study, observations of researchers and scholars on how to find the solution about moral degeneration that has impacted on the lives of Vhavenḓa youth and other youth of today around the globe were focused on. The literature review in this study was based more on issues that are linked to Indigenous Knowledge Systems as discussed by various scholars. This study used the qualitative research methodology though quantitative minimally. The sampling of data was more purposive though there were cases of convenience and snowballing so as to get more data. Data for this research study was collected through questionnaires and interviews from a host of interviewees. This data was analysed using open and axial coding. The findings were grouped or categorised into major themes in terms of selective coding. Reasons behind the findings were explained too. The study provides information about the production growth of sugar and ethanol in the factories as long as it gives interpretative elements of the contractual relationship both in private and constitutional point of view, proposing solutions to the imbalances that might occur in the purchase and sale contracts of future crops with small farmers in the State of. From a commercial point of view the region covers wide range of purchase and sale of sugarcane contracts, and considering a scientific perspective it shows great relevance, with reflections on the contract area. Due to this perspective, which includes the verification of the contracted forms, its main purpose is to ponder the situation of small farmers in this kind of deal, according to the principles of objective good faith, the contract social function, reasonableness and the Courts jurisprudence, always interpreting the contractual terms in favor of the party with less financial condition, in order to reduce the contractual imbalance. It defends the view that the purchase and sale harvest contract can be reviewed/terminated in case of an agreement imbalance, especially considering that the acquiring company does not anticipate payments or help in the purchase of agricultural inputs. / Esta dissertação visa a análise da jurisprudência sobre contratos de compra e venda de produção futura de cana-de-açúcar pelas empresas produtoras de álcool no Estado de Goiás (Usinas). O estudo levanta informações sobre o crescimento da produção de açúcar e de álcool nas usinas, bem como fornece elementos interpretativos do vínculo contratual assumido pelos contratantes na órbita privada e constitucional, propondo soluções aos desequilíbrios nos contratos de compra e venda de lavoura futura com o pequeno produtor rural, com enfoque sobre a agricultura familiar, no Estado de Goiás. Do ponto de vista negocial a região abrange enorme gama de contratos de compra e venda de cana-de-açúcar, e sob o ângulo da órbita científica apresenta liames de interessante relevo, com reflexos na área contratual. Devido a essa abordagem, que inclui a verificação das formas contratadas, tem o objetivo de sopesar a situação do pequeno produtor rural na avença e respectiva necessidade econômica de mantê-lo no campo, de acordo com os princípios da boa-fé objetiva, da função social do contrato, da razoabilidade e da jurisprudência dos Tribunais, propondo a interpretação das cláusulas contratuais em favor da parte com menor condição financeira no liame obrigacional estipulado, diminuindo o desequilíbrio contratual. Defende-se o ponto de vista de que o contrato de compra e venda de safra futura pode ser revisto/rescindido em caso de desequilíbrio no pactuado e interpretado na órbita agrária, mormente considerando que a empresa adquirente não antecipa parte do pagamento ou ajuda na aquisição de insumos agrícolas.

Esta tese tem como tema o inadimplemento antecipado do contrato no direito civil brasileiro. O ponto de partida para o estudo consiste na análise de jurisprudência que originariamente utilizou a figura, desprovida de consagração legal expressa. Posteriormente, é examinada a doutrina. Diante deste material, propõe-se um modelo teórico para o entendimento do inadimplemento antecipado do contrato, ajustando-o às categorias básicas do direito das obrigações brasileiro. São apresentados seus pressupostos, elementos constitutivos e efeitos. No decorrer do trabalho, são abordados aspectos do compromisso de compra e venda, a relação obrigacional complexa, deveres acessórios e laterais, fim contratual, inadimplemento, culpa e imputabilidade, impossibilidade, perda da função social, exceção de contrato não cumprido, resolução, indenização e demanda de cumprimento. / This work has as its theme the anticipatory breach of contract in the Brazilian civil law. The starting point for the study is the analysis of cases that originally used the figure, devoid of explicit legal recognition. Subsequently, the doctrine is examined. Faced with this material, we propose a theoretical model for understanding the anticipatory breach of contract, adjusting it to the basic categories of Brazilian law of obligations. Their assumptions, constitutive elements and effects are presented. Throughout his work, aspects of purchase and sale, the complex obligatory relationship, accessories and side duties, contractual order, breach of contract, non-performance, responsability, frustration, loss of social function, termination, rescission, and action for damages.

Essa concepção inclui o uso de uma técnica chamada de Atribuição de Personalidade ao Produto (APP) que propõe a compreensão dos produtos como entes vivos, dotados de personalidades – sendo atribuídos traços de personalidade humana aos produtos associados às suas qualidades estéticas. De modo específico, a dimensão sonora do objeto “sapato de salto” – resultante da interação entre diferentes tipos de solados com pisos distintos – e a atribuição de personalidade a estes estímulos sonoros consistem no foco do presente estudo, que pretende explorar as possibilidades de qualificação da experiência dos usuários em lojas de varejo feminino através do som, buscando responder ao seguinte problema: de que forma o Design Estratégico, com base na compreensão da dimensão sonora da personalidade do produto “sapato de salto”, pode contribuir com o design do ponto de venda? Para tanto, resgatam-se visões de alguns autores que abordam os principais temas a serem tratados: Design Estratégico, Sistema Produto-Serviço e Design para a Experiência, cujo foco será a abordagem de Jordan (1999) no que se refere ao conceito de “personalidade do produto”. Assim, por meio de uma pesquisa experimental – realizada com base nos estímulos sonoros decorrentes da interação entre diferentes tipos de solados e pisos –, pretendeu-se compreender a relação entre o som e a personalidade do objeto “sapato de salto”. Estas percepções podem contribuir para a concepção de lojas de varejo, já que a interação sonora entre este calçado com tipos de pisos distintos pode ser vista como um gatilho para experiências positivas. Os resultados indicam que é possível manipular a personalidade do produto por meio de sons advindos da interação entre os materiais utilizados nele e no ambiente. Assim, este estudo reforça a importância do som como uma dimensão capaz de atribuir personalidades ao produto, intermediando e favorecendo, portanto, a experiência envolvida na interação usuário-produto-ambiente. / In Strategic Design, the product is considered as part of a system - the Product - Service System - expanding its conception and providing design with a strategic perspective. From the perspective of Strategic Design, the point of sale, as a space of several interactions between the organization and the user, can be designed in a global way, so that individuals enjoy experiences that aim to create emotional bonds, which includes all forms user stimulation. Among the various approaches that allow working the relationship between design projects and user experience, this study adopts the perspective of Jordan (1999) on the personality of the product. This conception includes the use of a technique called Assigning Personality to Product (APP) which proposes that an understanding of the artifacts as living entities, endowed with personalities - being attributed to human personality traits associated with their aesthetic qualities. Specifically, the sound dimension of the artifact “high heel shoes" - resulting from the interaction between different types of soles with specific floors - and the attribution of personality to these sound stimuli consist on the focus of this work, which aims to explore the possibilities of qualification of the user experience in female footwear retail stores through sound, taking in consideration the understanding of the following problem: how Strategic Design, based on the understanding of the sound dimension of the personality of the product “high heel shoes", may contribute to the design on the sales point of view? To do so, we rescue visions of some authors that talk about the main issues to be addressed here: Design Strategy, Product - Service System and Design for Experience, whose focus will be the approach of Jordan (1999) with regard to the concept of "product personality". Thus , through an experimental research - carried out on the basis of sound stimuli arising from the interaction between different types of soles and floors , we intended to understand the relationship between sound and the personality of the object “high heel shoes”. These perceptions may contribute to the design of retail stores, as the sound interaction between these shoes with different types of floors can be seen as a trigger for positive experiences. The results indicate that it is possible to manipulate the personality of the product by sounds coming from the interaction between the materials used in it and in the environment. Thus, this study reinforces the importance of sound as a dimension capable of assigning personalities to the product, brokering and favoring therefore the experience involved in the iteration user-product-environment.

O controle do comportamento de escolha: um modelo experimental do merchandising no ponto de venda / The control of the choice behavior: an experimental model of the point-of-purchase merchandising

From the behavioral analytical point of view the point-of-purchase merchandising could be seen as a stimulus control in which subjects (consumers) respond (choose varied goods) diferentially in the presence or absence of the exteroceptive stimulus. To test this set of contingencies six experimental subjects were used, all of them adult, male, Wistar rats, experimentally naive at the beggining of the experiment. The bar pressure response was first modeled in all subjects. They were distributed into three groups. During the first part of the experiment, each group was trainned to respond in one bar and was exposed to multiple or mixed schedule of reinforcement in which VI were alternated with CRF as a function of an amount of reinforces obtained. Groups VsCn and VnCs were exposed to multiple schedules in which the stimulus (light) was associated with VI and CRF respectively, whilst group VnCn was exposed to a mixed schedule of reinforcement with no presentation of the stimulus. During second part of the experiment, all subjects were exposed to a reinforcement schedule conc VI VI to determine the base line of responding when two identical options of operanda were available to the subject. During this part of the experiment, the stimulus was not presented. During the third part of the experiment the reinforcement concurrent schedule was maintained and the stimululs were presented randomically over one of the bars to evaluate the control exerted over the pressing bar response. The results of groups VsCn and VnCs show that the stimulus has acquired certain control over the responding. Subject 85 responded more in the bar over which the stimulus was presented. This fact was not repeated by subject 86, whose responding was rather controlled by the position of the bar. The analysis of the control group (VnCn) data show that there has been a development of control by the stimulus only when it was presented over the bar which the subject demonstrated preference to during part 2 of the experiment. Group VnCs responded more on the Bar 1 in the post-presentation periods of the stimulus, suggesting that the control by past history with the stimulus was stablished, i.e., it was determining on the present responding of the subjects having been exposed to multiple schedules with the stimulus paired with CRF condition. The analysis of control group data (VnCn) shown that there has been a development of control by the stimulus during part 3 only when it was presented over the bar with which the subject developed a preference during part 2 / Uma das ferramentas mais utilizadas pelo Marketing para influenciar a escolha do consumidor é o merchandising no ponto de venda, em que se busca destacar o produto em um universo de escolhas muito parecidas entre si devido a um processo de populariazação das tecnologias produtivas. Do ponto de vista analítico-comportamental, o merchandising no ponto de venda pode ser considerado como uma produção de estímulo ao qual os sujeitos (consumidores) respondem (escolhem bens variados) diferencialmente na presença ou na ausência do estímulo exteroceptivo. Para testar esse arranjo de contingências foram utilizados seis sujeitos experimentais, ratos adultos da raça Wistar, ingênuos experimentalmente no início do experimento. A resposta de pressão à barra foi modelada em todos os sujeitos que foram distribuídos em três grupos. Na primeira fase do experimento, cada grupo foi, então, treinado a responder em uma barra e exposto a esquemas múltiplos ou mistos de reforçamento em que se alternavam VI e CRF em função de uma quantidade fixa de reforços obtidos. Os grupos VsCn e VnCs foram expostos a esquemas múltiplos em que houve o pareamento do estímulo luminoso com VI e com CRF respectivamente, enquanto o grupo VnCn foi exposto a um esquema de reforçamento misto em que se alternou o VI com CRF sem apresentação do estímulo luminoso. Na segunda fase do experimento, todos os sujeitos foram expostos a um esquema de reforçamento concorrente VI VI para se determinar a linha de base do responder quando duas opções idênticas de operanda estavam disponíveis ao sujeito. Nesta fase, o estímulo luminoso não foi apresentado. Na terceira fase, manteve-se o esquema de reforçamento conc VI VI e apresentou-se o estímulo luminoso aleatoriamente sobre uma ou outra barra durante períodos de dois minutos para avaliar quanto controle o estímulo estaria exercendo sobre a resposta de pressionar a barra. Os resultados do grupo VsCn mostram que o estímulo luminoso exerceu um certo controle sobre o responder dos sujeitos. O sujeito 85 respondeu mais na barra sobre a qual foi apresentado o estímulo luminoso, fato que não se repetiu com o sujeito 86, cujo responder foi mais controlado pela posição da barra. O grupo VnCs respondeu mais acentuadamente na Barra 1 nos períodos pós-apresentação do estímulo luminoso, sugerindo que houve o estabelecimento de controle por parte da história anterior do sujeitos com o estímulo luminoso, ou seja, terem sido treinados em esquema múltiplo, onde a condição de não luz foi pareada ao CRF foi determinante no responder atual dos sujeitos. A análise dos dados do grupo controle (VnCn) mostrou que houve o desenvolvimento de controle pelo estímulo luminoso apenas quando ele foi apresentado sobre a barra em que o sujeito demonstrou preferência na Fase 2 do experimento, ou seja, o controle do estímulo luminoso sobre o responder só foi exercido na Fase 3 quando a apresentação coincidiu com a barra pela qual o sujeito tinha demonstrado preferência na Fase 2

Ao final, o estudo chega à conclusão de que as soluções mais adequadas seriam: para a definição do direito aplicável, a ratificação pelos Estados Partes do Mercosul da Convenção Interamericana do México, e, para a definição do foro competente, a aplicação do Protocolo de Buenos Aires, uma vez que permitem às partes a livre escolha, primando e privilegiando pela autonomia da vontade dos contratantes, trazendo segurança jurídica no momento da contratação. / El estudio pretende presentar las posibilidades y la más adecuada aplicación del derecho en la solución de controversias resultantes de contratos de compra y venta internacionales de naturaleza mercantil en el ámbito del MERCOSUR, bajo la óptica del ordenamiento jurídico brasileño. Su base teórica es principio de la autonomía de la voluntad en la elección de la norma y del foro aplicables a una eventual solución judicial, el cual ha dando la base de la pesquisa bibliográfica desarrallada. La búsqueda de la aplicación de las normas jurídicas nacionales e internacionales adecuadas permitieran el conocimiento del contexto legal de los Estados Partes de la integración, para que se pueda establecer y resolver las antinomias derivadas de este entrelazamiento de relaciones interestatales y contratos de Derecho Internacional Privado. La análisis parte del abordaje inicial de la origen de las formaciones integrativas, la globalización, y sigue en el derecho interno brasileño, de los otros países integrantes, en el derecho internacional, de los tratados y convenciones que instituiran y estructuran el MERCOSUR, pasando por los diversos elementos de conexión entre la legislación interna y estas otras legislaciones internacionales. Al final, el estudio llega a la conclusión que las soluciones más adecuadas serian: para la definición del derecho aplicable, la ratificación por los Estados Partes del MERCOSUR de la Convención Interamericana del México, y para la definición del foro competente, la aplicación del Protocolo de Buenos Aires, una vez que permiten a las partes la libre elección, primando y privilegiando la autonomía de la voluntad de los contratantes, y trayendo seguridad jurídica al momento de la contratación.
