I did what is needed because for me it's important : How humanitarian managers perceive and experience their responsibilities with regards to managing risks of sexual violence

Paoli, Caroline January 2023 (has links)
Since 2018 and what is referred to as the “Oxfam scandal” it seems that the practices around the prevention of sexual violence in the aid sector have evolved but it is difficult to estimate how much has changed. This research focuses on the specific point of view of managers in aid organizations. They have a specific role with regards to safeguarding because they manage a team and are involved in project design.  This study’s aim is to understand how humanitarian managers perceive and experience their responsibilities towards safeguarding. Based on the analysis of interviews with 6 managers, it examines how they perceive their responsibilities with regards to safeguarding and the risks of sexual violence. It also questions how equipped they feel to mitigate these risks and whether they have observed a change in the past few years, with regards to sexual violence in the aid sector.  This qualitative research relies on the framework of gender-based violence, the concept of intersectionality, the concept of situated knowledge of Donna Haraway and the theory of competencies, one of the theories of adult learning.  It demonstrates that the perceptions of sexual violence by managers of the aid sector are linked to their personal ethics and experiences and that although they consider themselves responsible to prevent sexual violence, their perceptions of the risks are not homogenous. This study lays the ground for further research on safeguarding from the perspectives of managers, with a stronger emphasis on intersectional and decolonial approaches.

MCMI-III profiles of pedophiles and victim selection

Asgarian, Marcia M. 01 January 2000 (has links) (PDF)
This study used the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III to examine the relationship of psychopathology and victim selection of young adult pedophiles convicted of Penal Code 288 (a). The sample consisted of 64 felons, aged 18 to 24, incarcerated at the California Youth Authority. Significant differences were not discovered between the group means of male or female victims or between familial and non-familial victims. Individual scale elevations above the Base Rate of 75 were significant between the groups. Depressive traits were reported for pedophiles who had both male and female victims and Dependent traits for only male victims. Incest offenders reported both Self-Defeating traits and problems associated with Drug Dependence. Non-familial offenders reported Paranoid personality traits. The results suggest that pedophilic interest is characterized by an independent, active, and defensive personality and also by a passive, dependent, drug dependent personality style, all contributing to molest potential. This group of pedophiles can be considered heterogeneous and cannot be characterized by any one diagnostic category.

The Legacy, Life, and Lynching of George Tompkins

Brinker, Haley Renee 10 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In 1922, George Tompkins was found dead in an isolated area of Riverside Park. Though the media and evidence present pointed to Tompkins having been the victim of a lynching, the official ruling was that of suicide. Almost a century later, a multiracial, driven group of individuals set out to memorialize Tompkins as a victim of lynching and challenge the ruling that he had taken his own life. In discussing deaths such as George Tompkins’, it is vital to remind oneself that the victims of lynchings were more than just statistics in the ongoing epidemic of anti-Black violence that has permeated the history of the United States. By employing a victim-centered methodology, we can examine the lives of these victims before the worst happened to them and recognize the three-dimensionality of their lived experiences. This work examines the lived experience, lynching death, and memorialization process one hundred years later of George Tompkins. In understanding the means by which he lived, died, and was remembered, we can better understand the ways that this process can play a role in multiple contemporary communities.

La figure du médecin praticien de l'aide médicale à mourir au Canada : persécuteur, victime ou sauveur ?

Nuttens, Charlotte 21 September 2023 (has links)

Lisa Holm – the ideal the murder victim? : A qualitative study on the murder of Lisa Holm in the evening newspaper Aftonbladet.

Martis, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
The aim of the study is to examine how the evening newspaper Aftonbladet portrays the murder victim Lisa Holm and her killer Nerijus Bilevicius, and how these portrayals are related to Nils Christie's theory about the ideal victim. The central questions investigated are: How are the victim and the perpetrator portrayed by the evening newspaper Aftonbladet, and how does Aftonbladet's portrayal relate to the theory of the ideal victim? To examine the research questions, a deductive thematic analysis was conducted. Before commencing the analysis, five themes were found based on Christie's theoretical framework, which served as the foundation for the analysis. The selection analyzed consisted of 48 chosen articles all written by Aftonbladet. The result of the analysis shows how Lisa is portrayed as "the girl" - a young and vulnerable individual, described as happy, shy, and goal-oriented. At the time of the crime, she was engaged in a respectable project, she had finished her work shift, and was on her way home. It is emphasized that the location of the crime, her workplace, cannot be blamed. The analysis also indicates that Lisa and Nerijus Bilevicius had no prior relationship, signifying that the perpetrator was unknown to the victim.  Nerijus, the perpetrator, is portrayed as large and malevolent, aligning with the idealized image of an offender. Despite a few positive descriptions from relatives, the negative descriptions prevail. The analysis of Aftonbladet's portrayal of Lisa Holm and Nerijus Bilevicius demonstrates a close alignment with Christie's model of the ideal victim and the ideal offender, fulfilling all five criteria outlined by Christie. These findings underscore how Aftonbladet's representation of Lisa and Nerijus resonates with the idealized image of a victim and perpetrator according to Christie's theory, emphasizing the media's impact on the public perception of crime victims and offenders. This case serves as an illustration, according to the perfect ideal victim. The results suggest that Aftonbladet portrays Lisa as the ideal victim and Nerijus as the ideal offender according to Christie's model. It emphasizes how media portrayal can influence our general perception of crime victims and offenders.

Victims of more than just bias gender's influence on jury awards and other monetary benefits in workplace sexual harassment claims

Ferraro, Anthony 01 August 2012 (has links)
The main objective in this research was to examine the extent to which gender and gender biases influence monetary benefits received, including jury award amounts, in workplace sexual harassment claims. Two methods were utilized to explore the discrepancies in monetary benefits received based on gender differences. The first method used was a survey to test various gender attitudes, attitudes on sexual harassment, and how influential a victim's gender was on determinations of damage award amounts in sexual harassment cases. 6 two-way factorial univariate between-subject analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to analyze the survey data. The second method in this project consisted of an examination of claims filed by victims of sexual harassment. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission statistics were broken down by gender with respect to resolution type. This provided a means to assess the actual monetary benefits received by both men and women across all possible forms of claim resolutions. In conjunction, these two methods provide a more balanced approach to the assessment of gender discrepancies in sexual harassment claims. Using a combination of actual claims of sexual harassment and survey data, rather than just one or the other, allows for direct comparison between perception and reality. The comparison of perception and reality allows for a more complete assessment of the state of sexual harassment claims as they relate to victim's gender. With a more complete assessment of sexual harassment claims and perceptions of sexual harassment it may be possible to bring to light potential injustices caused by gender or gender stereotyping, and correct any imbalances that may be present.
